Blago: I’m Blacker Than Obama
The former Illinois governor tells Esquire: "It's such a cynical business, and most of the people in the business are full of s— and phonies, but I was real, man — and am real. This guy, he was catapulted in on hope and change, what we hope the guy is. What the f—? Everything he's saying's on the teleprompter. I'm blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived. I saw it all growing up."

This is more insulting that Harry Reid’s statement. Basically it pushes the notion that Black=ghetto, or worst Black=being a screw up.
He is basically saying all Black People who don’t act like or aren’t from the “ghetto” aren’t really black.
Do you know how this crap affects black youth. Thats why Gilbert Arenas (from working class home)still behaves the way he does. To prove himself “really Black.”

I’m amused that Blago thinks growing up in a five-room apartment was a difficult thing. Real sign of poverty there, Blago, being in a five-room apartment.
What a d-bag.

I taught at an all black school less than 2 miles from Obama’s multi-million dollar mansion. Previously I had taught at a suburban white school. How black families are treated by local government in Chicago is disturbing. Worse schools, corrupt police, anti-business restrictions, and concentrations of crime zones that are basically facilitated by the police to stay in minority areas.
There’s some merit to what Blago says because Obama has not focused on modern urban issues near as much as he claims. Blago is an idiot, but I’m growing fond of how straight up he really is. The Feds probably picked him over every other politician in Illinois because Blago can’t properly veil things.
They both just want to be stars. If Obama really cared about the issues of urban minorities, he would have spent more time working close to home. Instead he went for the glory and the false belief that the federal government can impact local problems.

Why do people call Obama afro-American? He is as much white as he is black so why does everyone focus on the black side?

Posted by: SearamblerOne | January 11, 2010, 8:08 am 8:08 am
It’s amazing how much you guys are completely missing Blago’s point. His point is that Obama got into office based on his image of being the first representative the “common (aka average)” black person when, in fact, nothing about Obama is “common” as it relates to African-American culture/society. He’s just saying that he grew up closer to that demographic than Obama did. Point closed.
Posted by: Chris | January 11, 2010, 8:13 am 8:13 am
Why? Why don’t you focus on how much white blood is in any African American? It seems when there is negatvity involved we are Black. When we become President – now we are a half of this and a quarter of that. I don’t ask caucasians, asians or anyone else the color of their parents and they have never inquired about mines. Why emphasize it now?
Posted by: MyMyMy | January 11, 2010, 8:15 am 8:15 am
NO Chris…you miss the point. African Americans are as diverse as anyone. If you see it any other way, then you are as bad as Blago. Too many think Obama is some type of anomally of African American culture.

There is no stereotypical definition of the word black. This guy saying that he is blacker than Obama, just goes to show how ignorant some people can be!Not all black peopele shine shoes or grow up in poverty. And besides Obama’s hope and change campaign was UNIVERSAL SUBJECT that does not relate to race, but relates to what people can achieve when they come together to better the nation. Thank goodness this buffoon is not the one running the country.

I’m bi-racial, so this personally Struck a pretty big chord with me. generally black people are very proud of our heritage, mixed or not. so for somebody to say that you are any less a black man because you’re articulate, or didn’t grow up in a large tenament is obsurd. hopefully this guy will see the light before it’s too late.

Obama came to Chicago and met his wife, connecting with his Black Heritage. Not for a year or two but for twenty.
Think about what you’re saying. How is Obama supposed to as the POTUS focus on minority issues exclusively. It’d be the fastest way to a 4 year term you could imagine.
He’s doing it right. Focusing on Jobs/Education/New Energy economy for all the people. The ones who will be affected most by what he’s doing are those most in need.

I think Obama is an collegiate elitist. Full of himself and arrogant. He thinks just by saying it is so, it will become so. Just by showing up other countries will be peaceful. He is finding out it isn’t that easy. They don’t think like us. We are weak as a nation. We have lost our “survivor” instinct.
Posted by: Nonofmybiznez | January 11, 2010, 9:49 am 9:49 am
Not in this country eltoro, because of the one drop of black blood rule that was born out of the south Obama is considered African American. If he was sent back to slavery or lived during any other time than now they would only look at him as one way and that is Black and nothing else. A bi-racial persons white ancestory means nothing in this society, never has and never will.

This idiot needs a psych evaluation. He’s in disgrace, and instead of having the sense to lay low, he keeps making ridiculous statements. Pretty sad in this day in age.

I find it offensive that any person can determine someones race based on their own illogical opinions. Some of the comments made on this blog further reinforce my own theory that racisim is not dead just often hiding. It takes events such as the election of a BLACK man to the highest office in the USA to bring it to the fore front. I also find it offensive for any white person to ever compare their lives with a person of color…EVER…there are social experiences that you will NEVER experience that people of color do. So keep “hatin” on my BLACK President. I will see you at the polls November 2012.

Then blago would save face with the country…IF he were smart!!
Posted by: Chris | January 11, 2010, 10:03 am 10:03 am
I don’t care that Obama is half black or half white. I’m dutch, german, french and english. That isn’t how I represent myself. Obama represented himself as black. Some people only see him as a black man. If he had white skin they would NOT have viewed him in such a manner. I see people for the soul that is within them, judge them based on the content of their character. Those words resonate with me. This world is a much better place for having had MLK Jr. in it. Obama is no MLK. Actions speak louder than words.
Posted by: Nonofmybiznez | January 11, 2010, 10:04 am 10:04 am
He is not saying that is is literally blacker then Obama. what he is saying is that obama played on the majority of blacks that are poor and got them to vote for him. when he is truely does not know what its like to be in there shoes he just wanted them to think he knew cause he was black
Posted by: Joe | January 11, 2010, 10:11 am 10:11 am
Racism goes both ways. People of all races have their own cross to bear and overcome. I agree, racism is alive. It is misplaced though. To group people by color is wrong. They should instead be grouped by their actions. I have plenty of black friends who feel the same way. I have no understanding for what their forefathers went through. I only know that they have choice to overcome it. Evidenced by the election of a “Black” president. You have a choice in your own future. Make it what you will.
Posted by: Nonofmybiznez | January 11, 2010, 10:13 am 10:13 am
I’m glad our nation finally elected a person of color. If you look solely at the election of a black man it says a lot about how far this nation has come. We have finally turned the corner and MLK’s dream will hopefully come to fruition. Again action speaks loudly. Obama has everyone’s hopes and dreams about the direction of this nation in his hands. I hope they are big hands. I hope that people will rise to the occasion and believe that anything is possible. It is up to you how you represent your character.
Posted by: Nonofmybiznez | January 11, 2010, 10:21 am 10:21 am
Some of you just don’t get it and perhaps never will. What this man said or inferred is offensive. Basically, if you shine shoes that makes you more of a Black person. And what you also do not get is this;and, if you think about it, such an assumption is equally offensive. It is most often of little relevance whether an African American is of varying ethnic makeups, is Harvard educated or from the school of hard knocks, is single or married, saint or sinner, republican or democrat when it comes to sharing the common experience of race. So for all who think there is this magical “get out of being Black free card”, you are seriously mistaken.

The NAACP and CBC are cool with Reid accusing Obama of faking his Negro dialect whenever he wants to, and insulting dark-skinned African Americans.
They’re cool with it and don’t fine Reid’s comments offensive because he has done so much for minorities.
In other words A democrat can call African Americans anything they want as long as they keep pumping out entitlements/handouts.

Are you guys serious. Bush was a multi-millionaire before stealing the presidency. And he ruined the world in 8 years. AND I know a lot of white people who shined shoes and grew up in apartments. Blago needs to prepare for jail. The only black trait he has, is that a majority of prisoners are black.
Everyone tries to discredit Obama, truth is you only look ignorant…instead of coming up with real arguments, you say things like “he’s not an American” John McCain was born in Panama, and Palin was born on Jupiter. There’s that good old GOP judment.

What a bunch of hypocrites.
Obama has nothing in common with the black community, very little in common with the working class period.
He loves the rich celebrity lifestyle, especially the glamour and perks of being president.
Datenights in NYC, $100/lb steak, $4000K
per night vacation home, Michelle’s $500 shoes/$800 handbag.
Hypocrites.

This whole issue is a tempest in a teapot. Reid, in a PRIVATE remark, was merely and unmaliciously pointing out the obvious. Everyone except those who are sightless can see that Pres. Obama is a light-skinned, highly educated African-American. Undoubtedly, he can speak “Ebonically” if he wants to, depending upon who he’s with and the circumstances. However, highly educated southerners and Texans, when they’re “down home,” don their regional dialects like a comfortable old bathrobe, thereby becoming almost unintelligible to the rest of us.

So we should believe that previously elected wealthy Caucasian could not relate to the common person or if we try and follow your logic…the average Caucasian person? The CBC and NAACP have their own agendas and DO NOT speak for ALL African Americans any more than than I would assume the KKK or skinheads speak for all Caucasian people. Is that clear? Instead of being bitter because the man can afford to treat his wife to a dinner that you obviously can not afford yourself, be happy that you can now cross another AA off that entitlement list that some seem to be so upset about. Would it lower your blood pressure if they dined on biscuits and grits? Get a life!

Excellent point Arlene. Obama was simply pointing out the obvious. It’s mostly hilarious to sort through the prejudices here. Yes, Obama is light-skinned, and also half white. Our president is white. Our president is black. No, he’s dark skinned white. From a cosmic perspective, it’s all laughable. It’s the same old game that’s played for so many centuries. Perhaps this is the beginning of real change but if so, it’s going to take much more to wake up the remaining bigots.

Harry Reid made a left handed compliment about President Obama. Lott suggested that a segregationist should have been elected. That is clear comment that he thought Blacks and Whites should be separated. I have in my possession some very racist email that have been sent to me by Republicans. The GOP claimed there was no racist signs when the tea partiers demonstrated. That would include signs with Obama dresses in African headdress and a bone in his nose. They also brushed over the email showing the white house with watermelons growing in the front yard. Sorry.. The drama kings and gueens haven’t got a case on this one.

I think that a deeper concern than what Harry Reid or any other American of European heritage is saying is less important than what “Blacks” say to each other, even in public in front of them. I’ve heard every derogatory term used by us, about us. What about that? What example are we setting for ourselves? Do you hear other races of people denigrate themselves like this. NO!

What Reid (and Blago) mean is that for 300 years in this country “Black” was a synonym for poor and ignorant. Duhhh!!! Due to slavery and its aftereffects, 99% of American slave descendants WERE poor and ignorant!! Growing up “black” for a long time meant growing up poor, in a one-room house, etc. Only in the last 30 yrs have opportunities to excel been widely open to blacks. People Reid and Blago’s age grew up in an age where blacks did not have that opportunity. If they are racist for saying this then the whole country is racist because it was this Nation’s policy to keep “black” a synonym for “poor”.

Re: “it was this Nation’s policy to keep “black” a synonym for “poor”.—
You are right. When a black person got rich, they accused them of not really being black, or of being “self-hating.” They wanted them to think that being poor was part of black heritage, or black culture. And that being successful was “white” culture.
They are still doing it, but now to the Mexican-Americans. Did anybody see Desperate Housewives last night? I guess if you want your child to live in a nice neighborhood and go to a good school, you must hate yourself and really want to be “white.” It’s ridiculous.
Everybody, no matter their race, wants to succeed!

Re: “You know, of course, that we aren’t talking about an ACCENT. We’re talking about ignorance of the rules of the English language.”
Nonsense. Harry Reid said “negro dilaect.” What do you think a dilaect is? It’s a regional accent! But they only use that term for black regional accents. When whites have an accent, it’s just called an “accent.”
What is the difference between how Jesse Jackson speaks and how Bill Clinton or John Edwards speaks? Nothing! They are all Southerners!
If Jackson has a “dialect,” then so do Clinton and Edwards.
Posted by: Bubbles | January 11, 2010, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm
Bubbles – Sorry, but a “dialect” is NOT the same as an “accent.”
An ACCENT is often a geographic anomoly in the way the SAME word is pronounced by a group of people (you mentioned “southern,” as in a southern drawl). It has more to do with the inflections that are present in the voice. An accent often describes the way people pronounce words of a language that is different from their mother tongue. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks English with an Austrian accent.
A DIALECT is often a different language entirely – e.g., different words being used to describe the same thing. A dialect is usually spoken by people who live in a certain region of a country, and whose language has “evolved” from the norm. Those people speak their unique mother tongue in their own individual way.
In the Philippines, Tagalog is the “official” language, but each watershed has developed it’s own dialect – and peoples from two different regions of the Philippines often have no idea what the other is trying to say – it might as well be Chinese.
The “blacks” pride themselves on their “ghetto speak,” uncaring that it holds them back both socially and economically from the rest of the country in which they live.

When I was teaching I was not allowed to correct the kids pronunciation and grammar because it was considered part of their “culture.” We fail children because of political correct nonsense.

Blago’s moronic remark all but guarantees him his own reality show on MTV.

This information is not news worthy. Why do you have a need to continue report on information that is null and void. You continue to show your prejudice and hate against people of color. It is difficult for an American who loves this country, to read racist articles by a young man who reports for ABC news, when he should be reporting for Fox news. John McCain, and Orin Hatch voted against Martin Luther King Day. Harry Reid voted for Martin Luther King Day.

Now, if only Harry Reid “could judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” the world might be a better place.

Methinks comments shld be based on Blago not Reid pls! Blago’s comment albeit innocently made, reveals (perhaps, a tip of the iceberg)what blacks went thru and probably are going thru in the United States of America!

Well that would make blago blacker than me too lol this guy is a piece of work. Why do we give these ppl so much airtime. I spoke ebonics for three days when i first came to America when my dad heard me he shut it down right away. When i was child growing up in my birth country my parents made sure we spoke properly so I’ve never known that speaking the way i do somehow it makes me less black and it’s very painful when people tell you’re not black because you do this or that. This guy is dumb. Why must we focus so much on race it’s so annoying everywhere you turn every person you talk to the conversation is RACE. Being black is tiny tiny part of me there is so much more to me and to our president and every other black person.
