Dodd Drops Reelection Bid

ABC News' David Chalian Reports:  Veteran Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn, is expected to announce his decision to end his bid for reelection and instead retire from a long career in the United States Senate according to Democrats familiar with his plans. Facing 40 percent job approval and terrible reelection numbers, Sen. Dodd will concede to political reality today.  He was widely viewed as the most vulnerable statewide Democratic incumbent in the country and by removing himself from the equation, Dodd is providing a good opportunity for Democrats to hang on to that Senate seat in Connecticut.  Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is the top choice among Democrats to replace Dodd. After moving his family to Iowa during his ill-fated presidential run and becoming embroiled in the "Friends of Angelo" Countrywide home mortgage controversy, Chris Dodd's political problems seem to be specific to Chris Dodd and less about the overall tough environment Democrats are facing this year. Sen. Dodd has spent much of the last year at the center of the most high profile issues including health care reform and financial regulatory reform.  But he did also attempt to boost his poll numbers by going up with early TV ads including one featuring his late dear friend Ted Kennedy. The Dodd announcement comes on the heels of Sen. Byron Dorgan's, D-ND, surprise decision to retire instead of seeking reelection this year.  Sen. Dorgan's decision is far worse news for the Democrats who now stabd a very good chance to lose that senate seat to Republicans. Democrats also lost two embattled gubernatorial candidates in Colorado and Michigan yesterday.  It is clear that Democrats are starting off the election year in an attempt to unload the dead weight. Both gubernatorial candidates in Colorado and Michigan were likely losers and most Democrats had already written off any chance Dodd had at reelection.  By removing themselves from the November ballot, Democrats have a chance at making a fight of it — most significantly in Connecticut.  Republicans will no doubt be singing, wit good reason, from the rooftops about Democrats jumping ship as a clear signal 2010 will be a bad year for them. And it is more likely than not going to be a bad year for the Democrats, but many in the majority party are eager to get rid of this dead weight in the first days of the new year than carry on with it through November.

Best news I’ve heard in a long while. It’s about time. I don’t know if it will prevent the “tar and feathers” though. He’ll go down in history as the Senator who said, “I misunderstood the question” (AIG bonuses).

Chris Dodd had a long and distinguished career in congress as senator from Connecticut. I think he will be appointed as Ambassador or to a cabinet position and I think his future is secure. I am sure every politician’s worst fear is loosing an election and I am certain that anticipating hostility from the press and the Republicans he figured he did not need any more grief,he decided he had enough. Don’t count him out of public life.

Senator Dodd is a symptom of all that’s wrong in Washington. Nothing about his career is “distinguished.” The fact that some believe he is entitled to another government job as ambassador or cabinet member is disturbing. He was caught in questionable situations (I’m being nice) and does not deserve a job as a public servant, paid with taxpayer dollars. Bye bye Senator. I hope many others follow you out the door.

Posted by: jjsmith | January 6, 2010, 7:30 am 7:30 am

Here’s hoping that all incumbents of both parties follow Dodd’s lead!! They will, hopefully, be gone this fall anyway, if the American people have anything to say about it! My only fear is that all these dropouts will vote for every single bill, good or BAD, that comes up between now and November. What do they have to lose now??

Posted by: M. Summer | January 6, 2010, 7:38 am 7:38 am

Another crooked politician that thought he was entitled to a lifetime job. He will be remembered along with B. Frank as the part of the problem with housing going in the tank.
The democrats are fleeing like rats on a sinking ship. The American people have had enough of the fleecing of the middle class. All incumbents should get out of Washington before the elections this fall because, you have a very large target on your backs.
Now take Pelosi and Reid with you. America, take back your government!

That must have been one heck of a Chistmas break for the Democratic Party members in Congress. They headed home from the insulated cocoon of Washington D.C.; saw how their policies are really affecting the lives of average Americans to the tune of double digit unemployment, rising inflation, increased terror incidents, and unending war; and decided their chances of getting reelected by blaming a party that has NO power anywhere in government is zero. With total control comes total responsibility. Get used to it…..

Considering Senator Dodd’s complicit acquiesence in the abuses at Freddie and Fannie, he’s lucky he can retire rather than be unceremoniously thrown out. If we could only get 59 more Democratic Senators to quit, we might have a decent chance at recovery.

MNResident – the policies that affected average Americans was the Bush policies that have left this country where we are today. From financial to foreign, he screwed us up royally. So sing now but dropping the dead weight will be a benefit to Dems in November. And repubs can do their best to spin it like they want since that’s what they’re best at – spin, spin, spin and lie, lie, lie. You betcha!

Just a guess here, but maybe the democratic leaders should stop listening to each other and instead to the American People. They might find their numbers looking a bit better. As for me, I won’t vote for an incumbant next election. None.

If this were any other country or any other time, Chris Dodd would be spending his remaining days locked up in prison for his role in nearly collapsing the U.S. economy. That being said, Dodd can clearly see which way the political winds are blowing. He and his fellow Dems. are about to witness the biggest comeback by a political party in modern history. Chicken Dodd didn’t want to face the voters so he will slither off into the sunset like the snake that he is. Good riddance and may this exodus of Democrats put a fork into the travesty called Obamacare.

We now have the most horrible debt ever imagined and Bush had NOTHING to do with this so called “stimulus” package which was a complete failure. So get over the fact that Bush was president and you didn’t like him – how do you like O’BAMA~?????

Dodd trashed his political career to help Wall street dirtbags dole out enormous bonuses using taxpayer dollars. Obama is trashing his political career, which could have been stellar, just so he can help the grave robbers in the Insurance Industry defeat the “Public Option” feature that would have reformed the Healthcare Industry. Far, far from the image of ‘change’ that dems promised to fight for. Ralph Nader was right all along — we really have just a one-party system in this country. There’s Republicans in wolves’ clothing (declared Republicans) and there’s Republicans in sheep’s clothing (Dems). And they have both been bought, lock – stock and barrel, by the powerful lobbyists, like the Insurance Industry and Wall Street. Which is precisely why both Repubs and Dems intractably and staunchly oppose Campaign Finance Reform as much as they oppose REAL, genuine Healthcare Reform, and REAL, genuine Wall street reform.

Posted by: Rank-n-File | January 6, 2010, 8:33 am 8:33 am

If all of these senators are jumping ship why don’t they all go against the health care bill, instead of cheating all of the American people. They are all crooks. They stole our tax money for their states, surely they have some honesty left in their hearts.

It’s what happens when Liberal Socialist Elitist Pigs called Democrats take hold of the City, County, State and Country.
You want “Hope & Change?” You want certain demographics to be leading and guiding our Great Nation to a societal ruin? Well, you have it folks…you have it !
The cities are the first to fail and then the counties and then the states and then the nation.
Ask yourselves, “Am I making as much money as I was under the Bush Years?” “Was my company more profitable under previous administrations?”
What does that tell you about Socialist Democrats that continue to be re-elected? Moreover, what does that tell us about ourselves who keep on electing this Vermin?
2010 election will be THE major turning point in our country…it will determine our nation’s future so vote and vote wisely and with some degree of educated research on the candidate and issues before you make another “Hope and Change” mistake.
The Politician’s agenda is simple:
1) Personal profiteering first,
2) Catering to the Influence Peddler’s,
3) Satisfying the constituents just enough to get re-elected and when the predicted vote count looks too close to call, they employ groups like ACORN to pad the votes in their favor for re-election…all for a price, of course.

Since Obama came into office he’s been putting out Bush fires and missteps. Dodd chose the wealthy Wall Street ‘bonuses’ gang over the taxpayer. Obama and Baucus are choosing the Insurance Industry over ordinary citizens desperately in need of health care reform (Dem withdrawal of the Public Option). So . . . what happened to the Dem promise to fight for change? The answer seems clear. It’s kind of like Dems saying “We vehemently and stalwartly disapprove of child sexual abuse” — BUT . . . “We staunchly APPOSE any legislation that outlaws it.” The first half is what Dems blow between their cheeks for public posturing. The second half is what Dems actually DO when you give them the chance (nothing). Republicans hang tough and doggedly press their issues. The spineless Dems surrender, capitulate, acquiesce and fornicate with their adversary. One represents enduring commitment. The other stands for cowardice and abandonment of their commitments (The Chameleon Retreat). The Dems are thoroughly decimating their integrity by totally abandoning the ‘fight for change’ they promised us.

Posted by: Dem_at_Heart | January 6, 2010, 8:58 am 8:58 am

And they will. Given half a chance — less than half — they’ll do it again, only worse. Because that’s the way conservatism works. Remember when the only answer to every economic problem was “cut taxes?” We have a surplus. Good, let’s cut taxes. We have a deficit. Hey, cut taxes even more! That little motto was unchanging even when was clear that the tax cuts were increasing the burden on everyone but a wealthy few. That’s just a subset of the great conservative battle whine which is now and forever “we didn’t go far enough.” If deregulation led to a crash, it’s because we didn’t deregulate enough. If the wars aren’t won, it’s because we haven’t started enough wars. If there are people still clinging to their rights, it’s because we haven’t done enough to make them afraid.
Forget the naughts, and you’ll forget that conservatives had another chance to prove all their ideas, and that their ideas utterly and completely failed. Again.
The point of remembering bad events is to stop them from repeating. So remember, and remind others if they start to forget. Because really, this is one trip to the water hole we can’t afford to repeat.

pamp205—TARP and Obama’s “porkulus” are 2 different things. You use an aweful lot of Dem sound bites but you make no sense. Porkulus has done nothing to help the situation, but at least Obama “saved or created” 20% of his estimate (by his numbers of course). Please, name one stimulus project that has come close, met or exceeded any of Obama’s estimates. Just one! We’ll wait.

All the dems care about doing is ramming helathcare “reform” down our throats. Health care cost will go up not down, and not everyone will be covered. And if your young and healthy, and don’t want\need health care, too bad, the government will make you pay a fine. None of the dems care if they get reellected including obamma. They know we’ll be stuck with their health care for ever, just social security ect.

Sir, you act as if these long serving senators and representatives , who have been in there longer than either Bush or Obama have served in the QWhite House, have ZERO responsibility for the policies they voted for over their tenures in Congress. Congress AND the President have joint responsibility for these policies. Presidents suggest policy, Congress votes on, approves, and funds the policies. The reponibiolity is shared. Get used to it….

And talk about sound bits – porkulus. Why, you must be watching Faux News again. Too funny!
“A report in the Wall Street Journal shows exactly how ridiculous the claims of people like Gingrich and Boehner are. Far from being a failure, the stimulus has succeeded in its goal of pulling the economy out of its downturn. The story opens by saying “government efforts to funnel hundreds of billions of dollars into the U.S. economy appear to be helping the U.S. climb out of the worst recession in decades.”
The article continues by saying “the money out the door — combined with the expectation of additional funds flowing soon — is fueling growth above where it would have been without any government action.”
It adds that economists estimate the stimulus has added two to three percentage points to economic growth for the second and third quarter. They calculated this by analyzing how the funds injected into the economy boosted consumption, investment, and spending. Economists said that the one percent decline in GDP reported in the second quarter would have been far worse without the stimulus. Projections for a non-stimulus boosted economy were for as much as a 3.2 percent drop in GDP during the second quarter.
Goldman Sachs is predicting growth of 3.3 percent in the third quarter. Goldman’s chief economist said “without that extra stimulus, we would be somewhere around zero.”
And I guess all those people on unemployment whose payments were extended thanks to stimulus funds might consider that a positive.

Getting rid of republicrats is good. The democrats need to take a stand and run single payer health care candidates. We need to get rid of the phony baloney health care insurance market that eats up 1 of every 3 dollars spent on health care. We already pay enough in taxes to cover the cost of health care. There are 18 more republican senate seats on the ballot in 2010. We need to send them all packing including the republicrats. we need to outsource their jobs to single payer real democrats!

This is not really a partisan issue for me but I am glad to see some of the entrenched career politicians (of either party)step down and let some new blood circulate in Washington, hopefully some that won’t sell their souls to special interests. You posters who point the finger at the other party while maintaining that your party has clean hands are fools. We have been sold out by both parties …… blame Bush, blame Obama, blah, blah, blah …… what is the difference between a dem. or a rep. rope around your neck? The reason that they are able to get away with their corruption is because they keep you divided between yourselves …. and thus conquered. My challenge to you all is “dare to think for yourself”, if you will just do that (from both side of the spectrum)then our country will return to its true purpose; to serve the people. Peace All

pamp205 — Nice try, but unemployment is NEVER a positive. Our stimulus went to the bankers and Wall Street and nothing for the people. Banks are paying back their stimulus funds to get the government out of their hair. Do you not find it interesting that many banks are posting record profits? Could it be Obama’s “on the brink” speech was hot air and not totally true? Here’s a quote from Obama’s Senior Advisor for Stimulus Funds: “we have seen the most wee could from the stimulus in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2009 and we expect the stimulus to have very little effect in 2010″. You buy into the Dems “on the brink” BS when our biggest issue was the housing and banking debacle. The only help for “we the people” was the extension of unemployment benefits and only now is Obama starting to realize he should have addressed small business and consumer confidence/spending. Those 2 issues alone have the greatest effect on our economy. Stimulus put our money in the mismanaged bankers hands who returned the favor with higher interest rates and a severely restricted loan market. I wonder what you think of what the TARP funds did? The stimulus was a huge failure for the credit market (didn’t loosen like Obama said), unemployment (Obama’s prediction), small business (waiting on health care reform), housing (renogotiations for loans promised by Obama), etc. Do you not find it interesting that the main areas doing any good are the banks and Wall Street (another bubble) right now?

INDEPENDENT 2010/2012 !!! The whole lot of politicians needs to be changed… like dirty diapers. Too bad for even the very few honest ones (like Ron Paul)… If the candidate is either Republican or Democrat, DON’t EVEN think of picking them, no matter what promises (lies) they may say. Even an honest person who joins either Party will inevitably get corrupted (i.e. Obama). INDEPENDENT 2010/2012 !!! If you EVEN THINK of making excuses and voting for someone from either party, you are a hopeless idiot.
