Gillibrand to Ford: Bring it On
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Harold Ford Jr.’s needling of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, as he considers a primary challenge against her for her Senate seat, is drawing a response. In a statement issued tonight, Gillibrand, D-N.Y., suggests that Ford is still a resident of Tennessee — where he represented congress until losing a Senate race in 2006 — and calls him “anti-choice, anti-marriage equality, and now opposed to President Obama’s health care legislation.” The statement is in response to Ford’s letter today to Gillibrand and New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer, asking them to oppose President Obama’s health care plan unless it’s stripped of provisions that would impose extra costs on New York. The full statement from Gillibrand: “If Harold Ford wants to move from Tennessee and run in New York, he is welcome to do so and I welcome an honest comparison of our records and our work for New York. I will take a back seat to no one when it comes to fighting for New York.
“His record of being anti-choice, anti-marriage equality, and now opposed to President Obama’s health care legislation may be right for Tennessee, but I don’t believe New Yorkers will stand for a senator that says they will oppose President Obama, just like the insurance companies want.
“In our state, we have 2.7 million New Yorkers who don’t have health insurance and it is a New York value to get them the quality, affordable care they deserve. While we continue working to address the funding gap, we have already saved nearly $40 billion for New York in President Obama’s bill. I have been working on the Medicaid issues from day one and I have been fighting for more than six months to secure more funding for New York. As we continue negotiating, I am hopeful that we will make improvements.
“Harold Ford is saying no to the President’s plans to expand health coverage to 2.7 million New Yorkers, end discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, and prevent families from having to declare bankruptcy when they face a major illness. The legislation requires insurers to cover preventative care at little or no cost and it will reduce the hidden tax that we all pay when caring for the uninsured. It closes the Medicare Part D 'donut hole' so that 500,000 New Yorkers will be able to afford their prescription drugs. It also provides tax credits to 1.6 million New York residents and 249,000 small businesses to help them purchase health coverage.
“The bill is not perfect, and I am fighting as hard as anyone to deliver more funding for New York. I have played a strong role in improving this bill. I helped lead the fight to defeat the Stupak Amendment, worked to increase Medicaid funds and eliminate the cuts to hospitals that serve those most in need. I’ve met with Harry Reid and other leaders in the Senate and I’m working closely with our House delegation to improve the bill and secure more funds for New York. In fact, the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems have thanked me for taking the lead on these efforts.”

Nobody’s too happy with the compromise HC bill, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be improved — both before passage and as time goes on. But Mr. Ford appears to think he’s running on the CT for Lieberman party (or worse). It would be nice to see him retire to an analyst job at Faux News where he can continue to buttress Republican talking points. New York deserves better.

Way to go, Senator. Let Ford take his helicopter rides around NY, that is when he is not in the limo or hanging around his banker friends. What a bunch of nerve he has, taking his southern Blue Dog ways to NY and expecting to get the Democratic nomination. Ain’t going to happen, Harold!

This Ford is a genuine Edsel, and Senator Gillibrand is a genuine successor to Hillary Clinton – smart, caring, thoughtful, hardworking, progressive and effective.
If Ford-Edsel has such a passion for public service, let him return to Tennessee where his ‘pro life’, pro gun, anti gay, anti immigrant, and anti health reform views may find favor. New York is out of his league.

If New Yorkers want to continue to be one of the highest taxed states in the Union then by all means please vote for Senator Gillibrand, on the other hand if you want to keep the governments greedy hands out of your purses and wallets and the business people from leaving your cities in droves then I would advise you to vote for Ford. If something doesn’t change in New York it will soon start to crumble as fast as California!

Senator Gillibrand has worked hard to deliver for the citizens of New York State and earn both their respect and votes. She’s fought for IT jobs on Long Island, public health, healthy school lunches, expanded small business lending and much, much more. She’s a true New Yorker who can at once understand and represent all of the state, not just Manhattan. Gillibrand is totally right for New York. Ford is totally wrong. His would be campaign is a non-starter – a perfect Edsel.

I have no intention of voting for Gillibrand, at least Ford has some redeeming qualities. Gilliband is a little Schumer, both are too elite to interact with the masses.

Downwithsocialism: You support FORD and accuse Schumer and Gillibrand of being “elite”? Ooooooo-kay.
