Labor Chief: Senators “Acted Like Terrorists” on Health Care
ABC News’ David Chalian Reports: One of President Obama’s strong supporters from the Labor community sees no other choice for Democrats than to pursue a long shot strategy in a last ditch effort to save the comprehensive health care reform effort that consumed Washington for most of 2009 from defeat. SEIU President Andy Stern also charged that the reason Senate Democrats find themselves in their current predicament on health care is because some senators (read: Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman) “acted like terrorists.” “I think we saw in the Senate you know, death to change. And I think the Senate has huge responsibilities here. They were given a gift, particularly in the fall, by the American people of 60 votes. The ability to debate every issue and what did they do? They squandered it. And when I call them terrorists, they’re not — they’re good Americans — but they acted like terrorists and there’s a reason why America doesn’t negotiate with terrorists,” Stern told us on ABC News’ “Top Line” today. Stern made his argument for this final health care push by tying it to President Obama’s top priorities for 2010, jobs and reining in deficits. “I mean if we think about what the President’s going to talk about — jobs; health care’s a million new jobs, the biggest job creation plan we’ve ever had. You think about reducing the deficit, we can’t reduce the deficit over the long run unless we do something about health care costs,” said Stern. “So we’re at the goal line you know. It’s the last quarter, the democrats are in a huddle as the cartoon said today, they can either, they’re down five points they can either kick a field goal, punt, or take a time out. None of them work. The only thing that works is to get the team and push through and get to the other side,” he added. Republicans will paint any attempt by the Democrats to push through their health care reform legislation as ignoring the will of the people. Some Democrats have expressed concern about voter backlash to a final health care push. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, suggested that President Obama and congressional Democrats are choosing to “double down on job-killing policies” in the wake of their stunning loss in the Massachusetts Senate race. When we asked Stern to write the line he wanted to hear from President Obama on health care in his State of the Union address tomorrow night, the labor chief suggested he reach back to his campaign rhetoric. “I want to hear him say that as he campaigned and he talked about his mother and the fact that while she was dying of cancer she had to deal with her own health care bills, I never want another American to deal with what I and my mother had to deal with,” Stern said. Watch our full discussion with Stern HERE. We were also joined by GOP strategist Kevin Madden of the Glover Park Group to discuss the buzz leading up to the State of the Union. Madden says in order to reach Americans the president will have to convince the public that he "gets the message" and even use the rhetorical opportunity to stand up to his own party. "I think he's going to have to pick a fight with his own party. I expect to see some sort of language that says this is not just about Republicans versus Democrats," said Madden. Who the h e 11 is this union thug to think he has a platform from which to make such inflammatory statements? Calling Ben Nelson a terrorist is really “rich” considering he made an equally sweet deal with the devil..

Unbelievable – it is time for the SEIU to stop oppressing the rest of the nation.
At least the Senate, for all its problems, is willing to abide by the secret ballot – unlike SEIU leadership. It seems to me that labor could organize for the benefit of workers without forcing socialism on themselves and everyone else.

Andy Stern and his labor union buddies are the real terrorists. Their sweetheart deal with BHO really put the middle class over a barrel paying for the Cadillac health policies of Government union workers, of which the SEIU represents a large portion.

Health care, needs to remain where it is……dead……until it becomes National Health Care for all, including Congress….(no special deals for Congress), and quit trying to give the appearance of change, where no real change exists.

Stern sounds desperate. This is good for the republic.

Andrew Stern of the SEIU represents people who have health insurance. Obviously he is asking for reform because it is increasingly harder for the union to squeeze other benefits for workers from employers since their cadillac plans take up a big piece of the pie. If he gets the government to pay for health care for all he can perpetuate the “see what I got for you now” mentality by getting additional benefits out of the employer thereby increasing his unions’ PR.

The SEIU represents over 1 million health care workers.
Are you saying the people who provide health care shouldn’t get insurance through their employers?

Gary, Landrieu represents millions of Louisianans, Nelson represents millions of Nebraskans, Stern represents a million healthcare workers..bottom line is, sweet deals for some Americans at the expense of others is not the way to pass healthcare. Stern is a power-hungry hypocrite.

The Democrats passed a bill to tax health care benefits, except that Obama cut a deal so that unions would be exempted.
That’s why labor bosses want it passed, so that YOU can pay the tax that THEY get to avoid.
Simple as that.
America’s response is: No way. I’m not even sorry to tell ya, union boy. This ain’t gonna fly.

Healthcare reform with a public option should have been passed months ago. But instead we got waiting for bipartisan support (DUH!), special interests, stalls, bickering, double crosses and egos. Democrats have the majority and yet things aren’t getting accomplished because they don’t know how (or want?) to take control. Democrats need to take some lessons from republicans and learn what “rigid lockstep”, “all or nothing” and “we’re the majority” means!

Employers providing health care is not a problem unless it includes things not necessary like elective cosmetic surgery. Many New York State government union employees have cosmetic surgery in their contract, so they can have surgery done on various sagging body parts yearly, get a whole new body over time at taxpayer expense, then double hit the taxpayer for someone to fill in when they are off work. Got love the scammers. Just think the largest union employer is now the Federal government.

“special interests”
Obama bought off the special interests.
Special deals were given to the AMA, the pharmaceutical companies, the unions, Democratic senators seeking plums for their state…….
But he couldn’t buy off the American people.

Stern and the SEIU elected Obama. In November of 2009 there was an article on their website about just that. Does no one understand that Obama owes this union health care and card check???
