My Final This Week
Today marks my last regular Sunday show here at This Week. Thanks to all of you for watching so faithfully all these years and thanks to everyone here on the staff and crew for making This Week the special program it always will be.
Enjoy your Sunday. I’ll see you tomorrow on GMA and World News.

George… You will be missed very much on the Sunday show.
I just wanted to say that I was very dissapointed to see Liz Cheney to have unbiased debate on issue. I wonder if she ever said the Carolina republican was a racist when he shouted ‘Liar’

George,
I will miss you Sunday show very much. It is always informative, non-biased and entertaining.
Best wishes in your new appointment.

So sorry to see you leave this challenging post. You are ideally suited to this work. What in the world is your network thinking of?

Thank you George for your service to the American Public in giveing us a fair and ballanced reporting on the issues. I will miss you on Sunday but will see you five days a week on GMA.

George, Very sorry to lose you on This Week. I’m a 75 yr old man with a permanent case of heart burn when I look at where this nation is going. You keep me hopefull, with your reporting, that someone is telling it the way it is, regardless of who it is. Best of luck on GMA. Guess I’ll have to start watching AM TV.

Good luck George. I think you may be better suited for you new gig. This week needs someone tougher and willing to challenge the panel , not just let sit stupid comments without challenge. Please quit having Liz Cheney on this show she is a hack job and always seems to be rewriting her Father’s leagcy. I cannot stand to hear her speak anymore. I switch channels as she just is not relevant. Lets move away from this bias bul and make my time worth it by true conversation.
good luck and hope that ‘This Week” does betterin the future or i shall ffind a free hour sunday mornings….

I’m going to miss you on Sundays, but, I do have he opportunity to see you for at least 30 minutes every morning on GMA. Best of luck to you

The rise of conservative history manufacturing has put valid reporting in dire jeopardy. When obstreporous conservatives are allowed to foment untruths, the message that the 4th estate instills gets lost. The major NEWS networks(I don’t include FOX) need to establish certain inviolate constructs on broadcasts. When “This Week” returns, invited conservatives should be given a format that if strays into abject fantasy, will be challenged vigorously. They can SAY what they want, but will be vilified on shenanigans.

I will miss you on Sunday mornings. I always looked forward to “This Week” with you as host. I’ll still watch but it won’t be the same.
I also have to comment about Liz Cheney. Whenever I see that she is going to be on I cringe. I have no interest in anything she has to say because what she does say is biased BS!
Posted by: Susan | January 10, 2010, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm
I have to agree with a number of the other bloggers. Liz Cheney has nothing of substance to say – at all. I only hope that your replacement has far fewer partisans on the round table (left and rigt) and goes deeper into the issues, similar to the PBS news hour. And George, it has always appeared to me that you are too anxious to “move around the table” during the roundtable segment rather than holding partisan commentators feet to the fire.
Posted by: David | January 10, 2010, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm
Good luck. Now you can get even with Bill Clinton in New York. Keep cool.
Posted by: austin | January 10, 2010, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm
Good Luck George – I will miss you on this show. I have found you to be a balanced mediator of a sometimes very biased raucous group at the roundtable.
I have to agree – please do not ask Liz Cheney back. She is biased to say the least, and does not have anything interesting to add other than constant criticism of President Obama.
Posted by: Kate | January 10, 2010, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm
Not sure what we’ll watch now on Sunday mornings. I too believe ABC is crazy to move you to the weekdays – I’ll be at work and won’t be able to watch.
Why in the world is Liz Cheney allowed to go on and on. Surely she can’t believe the words that come out of her mouth!
Posted by: Linda K | January 10, 2010, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm
While I am not a fan of the tea party crowd and thought Wilson’s remarks were at teh wrong time. I have grown to believe that Obama has lied. Even Pelosi commented that he said a lot of things on the campaign trail, but what has that got to do with today.
We did not get CHANGE, we got more of the SAME!

George,
I have been watching This Week since the Brinkley years and thought you did a great job–I hope you can continue to be involved covering substantive issues in the morning show. You’ll be missed on Sundays.
ps. ABC-dump Cheney

Congratulations, George, for doing so much to raise the quality of “This Week,” and best wishes for a long, fulfilling run as host of “GMA.” Your final program as regular host of the Sunday show does leave an unanswered question, however: What, besides her last name, makes Liz Cheney qualified to participate in a roundtable with panelists of significant professional stature? Especially considering the limited time, viewers of “This Week” deserve better than predictably partisan boilerplate from a wannabe.
Posted by: CredibilityChecker | January 10, 2010, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm
Interesting to read the comments about Liz Cheney. I feel the same way when I see Rachel Maddow on. I turn it off immediately. Who is taking George’s place? Hopefully, to be fair, they will get someone who used to work for a Republican president.
Posted by: klps45 | January 10, 2010, 2:36 pm 2:36 pm
I too wish George S. good luck in his new position. My husband & I have watched his program for a long time. I have never written before but was so irritated that Liz Cheney was on the show, I felt I had to say something! Imagine my surprise when I found many other viewers commenting on the very same thing! What qualifications does she have to be considered for the panel? She’s her Father’s parrot and has never held a position of any responsibility. I would figure that FOX would have her on to rewrite her Father’s history but never ABC! Please don’t sink so low again! There are many other competent conservatives you could invite on the show!

Sorry to see you are leaving. I found your program interesting most days. I enjoyed seeing Liz Cheney join your panel, as multiple perspectives should be encouraged. It helps people to consider other ideas besides their own rut.
Best wishes to you and your family,

Sunday mornings will not be the same without you George. Your transition from This Week to GMA must have been stressful and perhaps this accounts for the criticism being doled out. You have done an outstanding job consistently being responsible, fair, honest and compassionate.Few professional news people have these qualities. Best of luck to you and your family.
Posted by: Geri Pappas | January 10, 2010, 3:02 pm 3:02 pm
Just wondering why Liz Cheney is even on the program, she’s no journalist and is pushing a partisan agenda and a very narrow point of view. Until ABC ditches her I’m not watching any more.

Have enjoyed This Week since the Brinkley time. You’ve done a great job and now you’ve moved on. Would love to see Terry Moran, Lawrence Grad. take over!! See you on GMA

I am not going to watch the show any more with Liz Cheney on-no matter who is in George’s seat. I did enjoy every show until the reckless and un-American Liz Cheney joined the panel. Good luck George.

George,
I truly am sorry your leaving the Sunday morning news show, however I dont want to critize you are the format however having Liz on your program its one slam after another for the democrats no matter what question you ask her theres always a comment about the party. Shes only repeating whatever her father has said, I think your program can invite someone else who not so bias. I watched Fox until they had Russ on, and that was the last time I watched that station.l
Posted by: paulette | January 10, 2010, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm
I enjoyed the show, George, but agree that some comments need to be challenged by a tougher interviewer. I tend to change the channel when Liz Cheney is on. I truly wish she would never be invited again. I can appreciate Republican point of view but I do expect reasoned opinions.
Posted by: viewer | January 10, 2010, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm
So sorry to see George go. I usually don’t see the first 1 1/2 hours of GMA so I won’t be seeing much of him. In my career or being a moderator of focus groups and top executives, I appreciate how George brings out the personalities of each person on his show. I guess I will shop around now and see if anyone can bring the various sides of events to the surface for Sunday viewers. With lots of problems for the American public and voters it is good to see such varied comments. I noticed the majority of comments above did not like Liz Cheney but it provides a big contrast to think about. George’s was the one show I would never miss each week.
“Thanks for the memories.”
Posted by: ccbridgelady | January 10, 2010, 4:07 pm 4:07 pm
George,Before leaving “This Week”, please tell the producer to never have Liz Cheney on again. Her comments were not appropriate to the topics and she only pushed her narrow agenda of hatred for the President.
She did not give me my money’s worth on the program and her lack of global intellect and experience made your program look small and unmanaged.
It is sad to see George depart with Liz Cheney spouting her talking points out of discussion context. I think her Liberal Zealots” comment dripped enough to show she is a new type of racist direct out of the Rove / Cheney era.
Posted by: Richard | January 10, 2010, 4:09 pm 4:09 pm
Thank God for your departure! I have had about enough of your weak right wing bias! When Guilliani can bold face lie to you about attacks on America without you even challenging him, and when you can have the likes of Liz Cheney acting like an authority on anything on your program and giveng her the satisfaction or crediblility of being someone who knows anything, is totally irresponsible un professional and destructive for America! If you call this good media I say good ridence and don’t let the door hit you in the rearend as you leave! Amnerica deserves much better than this and had better start listening to the progressives or we will go backward as a nation!
Posted by: Niner | January 10, 2010, 4:09 pm 4:09 pm
George, I didn’t realize that this was your last show, which I began watching some months ago. I was going to say, “If you have Liz Cheney on again, I’ll just have to stop watching. She is not a trustworthy person in my opinion.” Good luck on GMA. Sorry to see you go.
Posted by: Jewel Hyland | January 10, 2010, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm
Thanks George. I’m glad you have given Liz Cheney an opportunity on This Week. She is the answer to the libs’ Katrina vanden Hueven, the socialist maven.
Overall, you have kept the show interesting despite your clear liberal bias — usually happening when you think that there are some winning conservative points and you quickly change the topic. Your defense of all liberal politics has been grating but not to the point that I stopped watching. I just understand your loyalty to your “base.”
Posted by: PC | January 10, 2010, 4:18 pm 4:18 pm
Voter discontent and anger will find it’s way to ABC News sooner rather than later. You need something much more fair and balanced. Al Hunt? Robert Reich? These leftists are out of touch.
I’ve enjoyed the program while you have been the host, but the bias is despicable. David Brinkley is turning in his grave!
Posted by: Thespis | January 10, 2010, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm
I have to agree with what others were saying in that Sunday mornings on “This Week” won’t be the same without you. You are a gifted journalist who goes for the “jugular” everytime in asking those tough no-nonsense questions. It will very hard in finding someone like you to fill your shoes on the show- perhaps Jake Tapper or Terry Moran who have filled in for you before would excellent choices to replace you-maybe even someone like Cokie Roberts who knows Washington inside and out due to the fact she came from a congressional family. Good luck on GMA – I will look forward to seeing you every morning Monday thru Friday. I hope you, Ali and the girls will adjust to living in New York.

Hate to see you leave George. But wish you all the best. One day you’ll be replacing Diane:-) Whoever replaces you…keep that Cheney woman out of there. She says nothing we want to hear.

George,
Good luck with the transfer to GMA. I always thought “This Week” was bright and informative, but I agree that it lacked a summary portion or an analysis by the moderator which could lessen the noise from some off-base comments and underline the wisdom of factual, insightful comments. Your roundtable gave all ideas, even those lacking credence, equal weight, which was unfortunate in that they were not sufficiently challenged elsewhere in the show.
You have to be careful in walking the nice-guy/journalist tightrope mornings on Good Morning America. Though you want to be nice to appeal to people in the a.m., you can see how being nice can let ppl like Guilliani (sp?) make an outlandish, unchallenged statement. You still have to be critical while being fair and sufficiently “tolerable” to the just-waking-up crowd.

Sorry you are leaving This Week but love it that you are on GMA. You are the best interviewer out there!

Jake Tapper is the only news reporter at ABC that has he guts to ask the hard questions. If you put Ted Koppel and his Liberal views back on TV you have lost alot of long time viewers. I stayed with George even tho he worked in the Clinton campaign, but I am tired of the pathetic situation in TV news. Either we get a decent interviewer on the level of Jake Tapper who asks the tough questions or we are don!!!!!

Why, oh, why was Liz Cheney on? She has no reason to be, just because he father is a politician? You’re just giving credence to her outrageous rants.
I’ll miss you George and if Cheney is on in the future, I, too, will be tuning out. Please let ABC big wigs know.

In response to a question when George S took over hosting This Week, George Will said he thought George S was up to the job. I agree and believe he has done an excellent job using with his inside knowledge of how Washington works. Heaven knows why this change is being made but it is an unfortunate one. At least please hold onto George Will! Have heard rumors that Gwen I from PBS will take George S’s place – PLEASE, PLEASE do not do that to your viewers, ABC.
Won’t see you in the morning but good luck on GMA until you move back into a more appropriate position.
Posted by: BarbaraA | January 10, 2010, 5:58 pm 5:58 pm
I’m glad to see George go. Especially, after he let Giulianni off the hook when he stated no terror attacks happended under Bush on GMA. He invites hacks like Liz Cheney on the show who add nothing to the debate. I hope he steps his game up on GMA.
He is soft on follow-up questions and fact checking. Anyone who says the media is liberal is sadly mistaken. I hope his successor is able to stand up and challenge guest on both sides of the issue.
Posted by: JohnR | January 10, 2010, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm
So disappointed this morning when you talked about partisianship, terror and Obama you didn’t see your way clear to add Giuliani’s comments on GMA and somehow vindicate your professional reputation – so, I suppose we will wait until tomorrow to see if you confess your sins,or if you think everyone has forgotten over the weekend of your huge mistake.
Posted by: Eleni | January 10, 2010, 7:00 pm 7:00 pm
George,
Congrats on what has been explained as a promotion. How going from what used to be hard news to entertainment explains our state of NEWS in todays society. That being said for the most part I enjoyed your efforts on this show and thought you did a good job. You were fair and coming from your previous job never thought that your bias showed.
This past week was not one of your better weeks though and hopefully the replacement and all panell show moderators will be like Dylan Ratigan and call anybody who distorts a story or flat out lies (Rudy, Ann and Liz, etc). When these lies are left unchallenged they become the new truth (no attacks on the US during Bush administration, death panels, Obama’s a commie, etc).
Good luck and in the morning GMA is one of my favorites.

Having guests who offer criticism of current officeholders or parties, etc. is all well and good. But having guests who have a clear political agenda that they push on the show is shameful. All Liz Cheney does is attack. She has no analytical or expert credentials, is neither a journalist nor a scholar, nor expert in any field. She is purely a self-styled political attack dog who adds nothing to the discussion except her opinions, which are usually from way out in right field. She belongs on Fox, and not this show. How sickening to see ABC cater to the those in the audience who want nothing but attack soundbites and “slams” against the people they hate. And if anyone else does nothing but push their agenda on the show, they, too, should be kept off. And guests should be held to a certain etiquette. Don’t constantly interrupt, dominate the discussion, go on and on without listening to anyone else. That’s Liz Cheney. Get her off!

George, I don’t understand the move from chief Washington analyst and your substantive hosting of This Week to GoodMorning America infotainment. If change was necessary, national news anchor would have further added weight to your career. I imagine ABC will compensate you for this, and perhaps you will find that satisfying. Political analysts of your ilk on network tv are few. This Week will not be the same, my Sunday mornings will not be the same. I join the ranks who will miss you.
Posted by: Karen_J_B | January 11, 2010, 9:34 am 9:34 am
This week with George was well balanced, objective and intelligent, until Liz Cheney showed up to ruin it on George’s last day. How did this happen is beyond me!! ABC, please don’t ruin one of your best running news programs.
Posted by: AL | January 11, 2010, 10:16 am 10:16 am
George, I griped about your choice of guests and your failure to challenge Rudy G’s lies, but for the most part, have always enjoyed This Week. That’s why I am so critical when I think you fall short of what I thought you started out doing. As far as Liz Cheney is concerned, I am with the majority of the posters on here – and I am an independent. I will not watch This Week or any other proram that allows Liz Cheney a forum for her hatefulness and rudeness. She is a nothing. If you want a famous offspring on your show, then why not someone who is measured and thoughtful, like a Meghan McCain. Liz Cheney is incapable of intellectual curiosity, but Ms. McCain is a listener and a more critical thinker.

I watched the show when David Brinkley was the anchor, and then Sam and Cokie, but George is the best. What will I do now?

George:
I too will miss your balanced repertoire. Being a Republican, I actually want to listen to ALL perspectives. You were able to do that on all counts. That’s an incredible talent. Unfortunately, some who have substituted for you do not do this and I am totally turned off…I hate FOX News for this reason (aside from being luke warm and quite stupid at times). Hopefully, the new moderator will hold it to the high standards that you created…
Posted by: Tom | January 11, 2010, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm
You will be missed on the Sunday show which I have watched for some time. I also watch GMA so this is not good bye. Hopefully you can bring your well developed expertise to GMA. The show could use a little more of the serious news stuff. As for the Liz Cheney comments I would like to say Bravo! For having a conservative point of view. We need to have liberal, moderate and conservative points of view. Liz is bright and expresses her point of view well. Again, bravo and thanks for giving all points of view. It’s rare to find this.
Posted by: Rosemary | January 11, 2010, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm
George,
I would like to advise your replacement to replace Liz Cheney as part of the round table. Her total aversion to any thing belonging to the Democratic Party is nauseating as well as never failing to cheer for the Republican Party. I am so tired of the partisanship in DC, that I certainly don’t want to watch it on this program.
The show would be better served with someone who can make an unbiased observation and then offer original ideas on solutions.
I won’t watch the program again, when she is on.
Posted by: Davette Colichia | January 11, 2010, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm
George is so far in the tank for the Democrats that it is sickening.ABC you need to try to find a host who does not fall in lockstep with every thing the Dems want to do.
Fox continues to rise in the ratings while ABC is in decline.

I’ve been watching ABC’s Sunday morning show since it was called “Issues and Answers” with John Scali, among others, and George did a great, thorough job, as befitting a good Jesuit product! I surely hope that someone of equal caliber is brought in; the rumor of a Ted Koppel caretaker anchor stint during rehearsals for a permanent host, a la Brokaw at MTP, would be great1

Good luck in the future George… I felt so compelled to comment about Liz Cheney’s performance on Sunday that I landed on this page. I am actually tickled by all these comments, my frustration echoed very well! I am a conservative sickened by the broad hysterical strokes painted by the Cheney’s, Karl Rove, Michael Steele et. all. (At least Steele has a title warranting air time). My favorite word of the week: ‘scintilla’.

I almost forgot: please dump that execrable LizCheney1 She is a valueless, hackneyed flack, and apologist for her horrific father, who adds nothing of value to public discourse!
Posted by: Dr John Quinn | January 11, 2010, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm
So long George. I hope in your next job you get to grow some balls. You let Rudy Giuliani sit there and tell a bald-faced lie and you didn’t even correct him. And now, you let Liz Cheney ignore you when you asked about her completely false claim about Obama’s response time to the Christmas attempted terror attack. You are not the only so-called “reporter” in the mainstream media who never hold anyone to account when they lie through their teeth. Are you a journalist? If you are, act like one.
Posted by: J.D. | January 11, 2010, 9:36 pm 9:36 pm
Whoever takes “the seat” from George, I (and I’m sure many others) would appreciate it if they would make the participants ANSWER THE QUESTIONS! Over and over again on many shows similar to this format, guests are allowed to take off on whatever tangent they see fit, regardless of the question. Liz Chaney’s performance this past week was a classic example…by the way Liz, “Why did President Bush take SIX days to react to a similar situation that President Obama took three days to address?”
Posted by: Dave | January 11, 2010, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm
George,
I’ve always enjoyed your program, but I fail to understand what possibly qualifies Liz Cheney to be a panelist.
She is not a recognized journalist, or an elected official or a high-level appointed official. She refuses to answer the questions asked of her, and instead spews forth her venomous lies, regurgitating the same sick logic as her infamous father, the worst Vice-president in US history.
I guess I will have to find another network to watch until ABC wises up.
Posted by: Bernard | January 11, 2010, 11:03 pm 11:03 pm
Good luck George.
I have always respected your honesty and intelligence, until in the last two week you have rolled over for lies by Rudy Guliani and Liz Cheney.
Why? Moderators need to confront liars and subject changers. That is your job and the reason you are there in the first place.
Posted by: MadDog2020 | January 11, 2010, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm
I miss George S. terribly already! He actually has a grasp of it all and real Experience in the field, and shoots back with logical, sensible questions that we all wanted to ask – pretty balanced. I miss ALL the good news men these days – Tim Russert being on top! ABC you screwed up. I know this new GMA gig will be more fun for George, but anyone can do that job – WHO can do George’s THIS WEEK job???? That is a special talent. You should have found a way to keep him there. Liz Cheney will put the other nail in the coffin – if you keep her around. Sounds like her father is still coaching her. She MUST go.

ABC News is a sell out to Fox TV as every week the sunday night 6 pm news features a fox news morning show guest. why? don’t you think fox is a real network? You don’t want to highlight nbc or cbs? You should. Fox is a joke and abc is enabling this faux tv news network every week. WAKE UP.
Also, get an anchor for your sunday morning shows with some guts to challenge the guests. George Stephanopolous interview with Liz Cheney was a joke. You’re just being used by her and her fake foundation. How many ads did she buy. She sure made a lot from your free air time — morons.
When George asked her about Bush not responding for six or seven days after the shoe bomber instead of obama’s three days, why did George not press his question on what bush did. he asked about bush and she answered about obama. Is George deaf, stupid or a coward?

Hi George,
Thank you for making This Week such a great and memorable program and always presenting the facts. On the Roundtable segments you were a terrific moderator, and a fair analyst. Watching your show has stirred my interest and awareness in the political affairs of our country.
Although I’m sad to see you leave This Week, I’m glad we’ll see you five days a week on GMA where you can let loose and show more of your personality.
Here’s hoping you’ll have lots of fun with your new assignment!!

I think George is NOT made for early morning news, sorry. George loosen up a little you appear to be uptight and never one to elaborate in a fun sort of way like Dianne or Chris, not saying you should be like them, well yes that is exactly what I am saying brush your shoulders off and have fun with it you are just TOO serious for me and early morning news. Can you at least pretend you enjoy doing the stories?

For the people complaining about Liz Cheney – do you complain when a lefties is on the show and showing bias? No you don’t. George is doing the right thing by bringing a depth of views to stimulate debate. You people are like big babies who cannot take someone else’s view. Educate, intelligent people do not stop watching the show because they do not like one person’s poltiics. People should stop watching when the Huffington post is on. How about that? George, you will be missed!

George you’re going to be missed on Sunday morning. You were the only one I could trust to keep things in perspective. It’s hard to decipher what the extreme right and left are “really” trying to tell us. I thought you did a great job getting through all the partisianship. Guess I’ll have to hope and pray you get the same job done on GMA. The political forum is really your home.

Without George This Week just isn’t the same. I gave up on Meet the Press after Tim, now it looks like I’ll be without Sunday morning news show at all. I will not be watching.

I believe that ABC is making a great mistake by transfering you to the morning show GMA.
If I were you I would explor possiblities with other networks, possibly CBS as quickly as possible.
I don’t think GMA is a good fit for you.
As things stand ABC lost a “this week” customer without you as host!

George, you will be missed. Your show is what I do on Sunday mornings.
I will be disappointed if Jake Tapper tries to step into your shoes. He has not shown the ability to ask tough questions of both sides of the political spectrum, and does not have the knack for follow-ups that you do. He also cannot keep the Round-table from degenerating, which you handled extremely easily.
I hope ABC finds someone as talented for that very important seat, but you will be hard to follow.

George: Why did you ever agree to do
GMA? Diana Sawyer was able to hold her own with all the “fluff” and sheseemed to be apart from it, but you seem to be right in the middle. I like Robin well enough but she appears to be overwhelming you in the morning.
she is not a “soft spoken” person. We have watched GMA for 10years following retirement and now switch to MSNBC or CNN to get real nuews ot the world.

I am a Republican and can do without Liz. I do love George Will. I also enjoy most of the other panelists. You are an exceptional journalist, have a brilliant mind and really leave your agenda behind. I am sure you have one but I think it changes with new info. I like that. You have a very impressive past and I am sure your future will be even brighter. ABC is fortunate to have excellent people. Diane was great and is already amazing on the evening news. You already look like you own GMA. You have a wonderful team. You can not beat Robin. Good Luck and now I will not have to be late every Sunday A,M.

I was a faithful watcher of This Week. No more. It has lost its identity. It seems more like a world broadcast — and not from the U.S. I am sad about the shift in character. Even the sets and graphics set it apart from the more traditional format. What would Brinkley think?
