Obama Administration Texting Program has Raised $5 Million for Red Cross Haiti Relief
The Obama administration’s program to raise money for the Red Cross’s relief for survivors of the earthquake in Haiti through text messaging has raised $5 million in just over two days, administration sources tell ABC News.
By texting HAITI to 90999 through their cell phones, donors give $10 to the Red Cross, a charge that will appear on their bills.
The State Department set up the program on Tuesday. One million dollars was raised within the first 24 hours of the program, which the Obama administration has promoted using three government websites, Facebook, and Twitter.
The program is “helping us get the food, the water, the medical supplies that we need,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this morning.

It warms my heart to know that people are donating, even though we are still in economic recovery. Thank you, to everyone who donated to help the survivors in Haiti.

now obama is calling on Bush to help the relief…who does this guy think he is… blames bush for everything under the sun.. then calls on him for help.. probably just to blame him again when haiti never recovers! I am so sick of obama he has no class!

This is great idea and a brilliant idea. Lets keep raising money. We are the most generous country in the world. We don’t need the government to print off we don’t have to give to Haiti if everyone just gives 10 dollars. We can help Haiti without more government aid

Excellent use of available technology. This is a smart administration. And the $10 contribution level is something lots of people can handle.
Good work.

Since the money is going to the Red Cross, a very responsible organization, this is an excellent idea and has been remarkably effective. Good for Hillary and the gang at State. It is reminiscent of the easy donation buttons set up on Amazon’s homepage back during the tsunami relief, which I see they are resurrecting for Haiti. Let’s hear it for the clever use of technology for good causes.

tierra…I already make a substantial donation to California about every two weeks….But what I am getting out of your response was….”who really cares about California and their 30 million dollars in damage and 6.5 earthquake”…Hmmmm….very UN-LIBERAL OF YOU……

I’m not talking about paying your taxes – the money to Haiti out of this program is not taxes.
I’m talking about your charitable donation. We’ll follow your example.

By the way, the Obama administration has (so far) directed $18.5 BILLION dollars to the state of California under the Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
That’s just to show he doesn’t care.

can we all put aside our political differences for a minute, and think about other people. this disaster has killed 50,000 people. imagine one of those people being one of your loved one. if you cant or choose not to donate, then thats fine. but atleast put your selfishness aside and keep them in your prayers.

I guess texting it a good way to donate. Better than by credit card where the banks rip off 3% or more making a bundle on all these charitable donations!

California is on it way down, 20 Billion dollars worth in deficits…are you following me thus far, now the Obama Administration has refused HELP to California in the form of extra Federal dollars; HOWEVER, has offered Federal help to Haiti and now before you jump the gun and begin typing your angry response at a perceived to be selfish statement, help is needed in Haiti NOW, no one is disagreeing, BUT California, the poor of this State that will be paying the majority of the price of budget cuts that ARE coming, could use a little Federal attention as well and is not receiving and WILL NOT be receiving it so stated by the White House already…Soooo at the very least when a 6.5 quake hits California as it did last week with 30 million in damages..there should be some Federal help afforded to the people of Northern California because chances are…they ain’t goin get it from Sacramento……All I am saying….

The Republicans voted against this money. Pity California if the Republicans had had their way. You should be thanking the President and the Democrats.

Again tierra perhaps you can write on open letter to all California opinion pages and explain to the poor of California who are going to be hit unusually hard, that they should be THANKFUL Obama has already seen it in his heart to dole out 18.5 Billion in Recovery and Investment Act….to the seventh largest economy in the world and a member of these United States who clearly contributes much more than they take-in to the Federal government…California goes, so goes the rest of the Nation…..

California (like many other states facing large deificits) has dug their own grave. Shame on you for bi*ching about the lack of Federal money headed towards California in a time of crisis. We are still the epi-center of the world, and when something of this magnitude occurs to a country as poor as Haiti, we need to help in any way possible. The money that we send towards Haitian relief efforts wouldn’t even make an impact on California’s deficit…trust me, it’s going towards a much better cause.

California pays MORE in federal taxes than we receive in services. I am tired of this propaganda that we are to blame for the federal government raiding our coffers every year. Under this health care plan we will lose even more money. We have given billions toward the Wall St bailout. We are sick of subsidizing everybody!!!!!
Nobody is saying that Haiti doesn’t need help. What I am saying is that Obama doesn ‘t seem to express any concern for the poor and unemployed in our own country. He sure as heck has never expressed any concern for what is happening in CA. In fact, he sees CA as an ATM for the Democratic Party. I am a Democrat, but if he thinks the Dems are automatically getting my vote again, he is nuts.
I saw Colin Powell on CNN saying that America has to totally rebuild Haiti. Not just help them through this earthquake, but give them they country they never had. Guess who will pay for it.

Susan, I understand your frustration, but maybe we should all think twice in the next Presidential election. As a Republican, I can’t say that I didn’t see this coming from Obama and his camp. Too many places need help these days, many states besides California could use some Federal money at this point in time, but we need to focus our help, thoughts and prayers towards Haiti. Having traveled to Haiti 3 weeks after the 9/11 attacks, I can’t begin to describe the sympathy that I(!!) was receiving from the Haitians, meanwhile these people had next to nothing to in their lives besides hope, faith and family. I feel lucky to have visited Haiti in the past, as seeing the country first hand, I feel that we as Americans are doing a great job helping to support them in this time of crisis.

As a native Haitian serving in the military I want to thank everyone who donates money on behalf of the country devastated by this natural disaster.Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean just a few hundreds miles across the ocean that separates the island from the richest country in the world called USA.During his presidency Abraham Lincoln said:”The American Continent belongs to America solely”.Back in 1735 Haiti was the richest country in the West Indies with the massive sugar exportation produced by the slaves acquired from Africa. The country was dominated by the French Empire and called “The pearl of the West Indies”.Haiti is the first black nation that conquered its independence back in 1803.The country provided the best fighters to the USA during the Battle of Savannah Georgia against the British. In return of their sacrifice a statue has been erected downtown Savannah in their names. The US military intervene several times to restore order and impeach the French from taking back the island. At this present time the military counts several thousands Haitians in its rank including myself who sacrifice their rights and freedom to keep America safe after 9/11.Donating 5 or 10 dollars to help the country in need should not have raised concerns unless we lost our human sense of urgency.

If you have nothing positive to contribute, at least refrain from contributing negativity. If you can’t or won’t donate anything else, kindly donate your silence.

I think it is disgusting that some of you are compairing Haiti to the earthquake in northern California.
California:
ONE person with a broken hip, no reports of serious injury or damage
28,000 without power
ONE gas leak in Humboldt county
Haiti:
OVER 50,000 casualties
How you can even compare the two is ridiculous

Colin Powell hit the nail on the head during his interview with Wolf Blitzer today: he made the point that Haitians living in America and elsewhere need to step up and help Haiti.
I believe that the best way to restore Haiti is for the children of that nation to rise up and restore their country. Only by becoming self-reliant can Haiti hope to gain strength and dignity, and immigrants with resources and business experience need to step up to the plate and take the reins.
If Haiti persists as a begger state, then it will never gain its potential. Self-reliance is the key. God bless the people of Haiti, who have a noble history.

Doesn’t anyone realize that the Red Cross is a jobs program for Republicans? Bob Doles wife and her friends were paid millions and Republican staffers can always depend on a job there when the Dems are in office. Suggest donating to the UN Relief fund who are smart enough to provide aid through the Dominican Republic airport which is on the same damn island if you look at a map. The border is just a couple of hundred kms away.

Some of the people on here are so selfish. How dare you moan and complain about state’s being in debt! Like many states; the reason many of you are in debt is because a great majority of you are wasteful. Even if our country is suffering; we still have it a million times better than they do in Haiti. Therefore, you should all shut up and be ashamed that you opened your big fat mouths in the first place!

My name is John from South Carolina and, I have 25 years of emergency field experience in advanced life support and, trained in mass cassualties. I have been trying to volunteer my experience to Haiti but, they say to go here and, there and, there is noewhere to get into the system to help, why? If you can help me to donate my experience and, training please give me the info to contact someone that can make it happen please. They will need help for a long time and, relief for those that are there.Thank you, John

I just read a news article that Visa and American Express are not charging fees on donations and I think rebating the fees they have charged back to the charities. I guess they’re like the grinch and do have a heart but its very very tiny.

The great question, in this effort, is just how much of all this help, money especially, will be wasted?????
Haiti has long been a problem in how productive aid to them has been. Now it will likely be even worse.
Aid is one thing, but gross waste is another.

Honest….WOW…SETTLE DOWN, no one is disagreeing that Haiti needs help and I encourage anyone who has quoted my previous statements to point out where I have quoted otherwise…But, I do believe and will say, as is my right to do so, that California, as other States who are also cutting budgets that will have a huge impact on the poor and elderly and children and unemployed will not be receiving the same response afforded to countries who are in need….If people want those donations to continue to countries in need, then we better begin by creating a positive climate for those here at home because the money is running out fast…BTW…You should really try learning some manners…no need to be rude…….
Posted by: Parallex View | January 15, 2010, 9:00 pm 9:00 pm
Zach…Need to read my previous statements…NO ONE is comparing California 6.5 last week to Haiti 7.0….WHAT I am comparing is the level of response in Federal help to the budgetary problems of States at home specifically California using the 6.5 quake and 30 million in damages, that California received no compensation for from Obama, added to an already dire financial situation the State is in…California has ask for extra Federal help and since California is the seventh largest economy in the world, California was hit especially hard….Gee wish libs would READ the statements as presented without injecting falsehoods in order to support their own lopsided agenda………….

California needs to cut state employee union employment and wages of those still employed. It also needs to identify illegal aliens for deportation. Rather than crying for more federal help while it’s been on of the strongest advocates of winking at the deluge of illegal aliens.
Posted by: Doug1 | January 16, 2010, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm
Don’t disagree with the previous comment…California is a mess no doubt; however, as long as the State assembly is controlled by the liberal democrats NOTHING will change and the begging for extra Federal dollars will continue and will most likely be rejected..so..the LEGAL poor/sick will continue to suffer…
