Obama’s New Year Wish: ‘Brighter Days Are Ahead’
ABC News’ Devin Dwyer reports:
The vacationing First Family prepared to ring in the new year by heading to the movies Thursday afternoon.
The president, first lady and first tweens ventured out of their rented Hawaiian home to watch director James Cameron's 3-D hit “Avatar” at a local theater they had exclusively to themselves.
Although the Obamas made no other public appearances yesterday, the president did release a video statement which he taped before leaving Washington, wishing all Americans a “happy and healthy New Year”:

Romney Makes His Case to Conservatives at CPAC
I thought he was working? Wasn’t he supposed to be getting all kinds of National security updates and briefs and in the words of an unnamed official “He’s continuing to learn new things … and is continuing to ask a lot of probing questions.”
It is like jello: there is always room for a good movie.

Not so much.

I am not an Obama supporter but posting rants and criticisms regarding every word he utters doesn’t bode well for you.
You look just as ridiculous as the “It’s Bush’s Fault” crowd.

So Obama demanded a beach closed for their use. Now he demands the theater closed to the public so that he and family can see Avatar. Talk about arrogant ! We just had 7 Americans killed and six injured with life threatening injuries. You would thing that Obama would have taken time to visit the injured and/or their families. Obama was the biggest mistake of 2009.

I wonder what you people expected President Obama to do once he got in office? Was he supposed to ignore the state our country was in and do nothing? Did you think the debt run up by the Bush administration was going to disappear? Did you think that President Obama just like President Bush was not going to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Did you think that everything was just going back to the way it was when Bush took office in 2001, peace and prosperity, abundant jobs, no wars, respected around the world ?
If President Obama had come into office the same way Bush did, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. This constant criticism on what President Obama is spending is as if you believed that the country was doing just fine and had no problems or crisis to deal with when he took office. You people act as if our country was in great shape, no wars, no collapsing economy, peace and prosperity. Get a clue, as much as you all want this to be all about Obama, the Bush legacy will continue to live on. How about you all yell for Bush and the Republicans be held accountable for what happened on their watch. Yell for that as much as you want Obama held accountable.
Oh, and for you people who are complaining about the President taking a vacation when millions of Americans take time off during the holidays to spend time with their family is just stupid and petty. Why is it that you don’t expect this President to need some down time and time with his family just like you?
You know us LIBRULS wouldn’t complain so much about your criticisms of President Obama if they made sense. But you people criticize him on EVERYTHING. You criticize him on handling things the same way George Bush did, then you whine, bi!ch and moan when he changes things. You people just criticize for the sake of vilifying the President. It makes no sense and is petty, ignorant and ridiculous.

Do all of you people bashing Obama really expect him to be working on Christmas or New Years? You do not have to work on these holidays, why should the president? I highly doubt those who are criticizing Obama complained when Bush and Cheney ran off to a ranch in Texas or went hunting and accidently shot someone thinking he was a bird. Did the previous administration work on these holidays? No! Republicans bash the current administration incessantly. This administration has inherited so many problems, many created by Bush and his cronies, that cannot be fixed overnight. Not possible. Stop criticizing every aspect of Obama and the rest of the administration because you are upset the right wing is not in control. Many Republicans would rather see this entire country fail than see the administration be successful.

You need to check the real facts. CONGRESS had to vote for us to go to war. Colin Powell made the most detailed case for the US going to war in Iraq.
Fannie Mae has been given a blank check. GM has been given billions more to stay afloat. Unemployment is 10% BECAUSE companies are afraid to hire because they don’t know what this regime will do next. The Defense budget Obama signed had 4.6 Billion in earmarks (he said he would not sign the bill if it had earmarks). Healthcare bill passed by Senate is a bribery laden monstrosity that does NOTHING to control costs. Government employees received raises, but people on Social Security (very fixed incomes) did not. The “brighter days” he talks about will apply to government and union employees. The rest of us, not so much!

How long has it been since Obama had a good month?
It won’t get brighter for him because
most Americans are fully awake now.
They see the real Obama and it isn’t pretty.
Obama isn’t annoyed because the terorist attack interrupted his vacation. He’s annoyed because it showed the incompetence of his administration.

Comparing historic and current figures is a little tricky, though. One can’t assume that just because the historic moment that seems comparable turned out one way, the current situation will turn out similarly.

The car companies are still losing billions, but instead of letting them re-structure on their own, government took it over and is now pumping billions more of OUR money to ATTEMPT to save it. There should NEVER be unlimited funds, be it cars, Fannie and Freddie, banks, or the government. The only jobs that are being “created” are government jobs. Foreclosures are STILL through the roof, even with the billions being pumped there. When the fed stops “propping up” the economy with low interest rates and moving funds around (fishy) the stock market will be taking a nose dive again.
There needs to be accountability on the money being spent. If it is illegal for Americans to bribe people, it should be illegal for the government. If we are being asked to tighten our belts, there should be NO earmarks in any bill.
And, once again, you need to stop bringing up past Presidents (history cannot be re-done) and give some FOCUS on what is happening NOW.

Nonsense. It’s always important to understand how you got where you.
The Republicans and the right would like to sweep the mess left at the end of the Bush administration under the rug – that is understandable. But it isn’t going to happen. People remember exactly what a mess the country was in when Bush left office. Anyone with a thinking brain knows that extreme a situation cannot be repaired overnight.
It took Reagan 2.5 years to begin to get a grasp on soaring unemployment. The situation Obama took over was FAR worse. We will see where he is at after 2 and a half years.
Obama is responsible for wrestling with the destroyed economy left for him by the previous administration – but the crashing economy when he took officewas not his creation. That came from under the previous administration.

Since Rahm Emanuel’s immediate response to the pantsbomber crisis was to have the records scoured for similar Bush lapses, you’ll have to forgive me (and other posters) for assuming you’re on his payroll. Although if you are, he’s not getting very good value for his dollar, since you’re fast becoming a caricature your worst enemy on the right couldn’t improve upon!
Americans don’t like whiners; hence the plummeting poll numbers that Fascist Hyena has thoughtfully posted for your perusal. Name call and ignore them at your peril (as Bush dead-enders did before you). It’s long past time for Obama to man up and start acting like an adult. His cheerleaders are doing him no favors by enabling this grade-school behavior and mindset.

Obama doesn’t understand what Reagan understood.

That’s what I would call real leadership!

“There were bits of information available within the intelligence community that could have and should have been pieced together,” the President said, “It’s becoming clear that the system that has been in place for years now is not sufficiently up to date to take full advantage of the information we collect and the knowledge we have.”
“When our government has information on a known extremist and that information is not shared and acted upon as it should have been so that this extremist boards a plane with dangerous explosives that could have cost nearly 300 lives, a systemic failure has occurred, and I consider that totally unacceptable,” he said.
Detailed, focused and productive.

it ‘s sort of like Republicans saying how great the ‘surge’ was, and never taking time to mention that before the ‘surge’ in 2007…starting in 2003, the Iraq war after the initial combat degenerated into malaise, futility
and neglect, a classic abandonment of troops in the field during war, typical Republican chest thumping…. start a war, declare victory, and leave the troops to suffer, and declare how american the republicans are..
but the truth of the Iraq war before the ‘surge’ is documented for all to see, manipulated intel, failure and bravado without a plan, with a generous helping of dead american troops.

What I believe is they are on a witch hunt
—
OMG. The other day I was on twitter and one of my fave bloggers asked who wanted to lay down bets on when the Republicans and their conservative tea party comrades would pivot and start whining and pointing fingers in regards to the demoralizing of the CIA. Within an hour Newt was on the “witch hunt” meme.
Guess it got picked up and is making the rounds. The predictability of the asinine accusation is what makes me chuckle.
Off topic, but related to the CIA, I just read a good post about the weakening of al-qaeda. Don’t know if he has it right about Republicans but, here’s a snip from Washington Monthly’s Political Animal:
“It’s understandable for Americans to have the exact opposite reaction in light of last week’s plot. And as quickly became obvious, Republican lawmakers and leading conservative voices in the media have an interest in trying to make the public as fearful and mistrusting as possible, because the GOP may benefit electorally. Reading Blair’s letter about the United States “weakening al Qa’ida’s ability to plan, organize, finance, and carry out highly orchestrated attacks,” will likely prompt replies such as, “But, but, they just tried to kill 300 people!”
Looking objectively at what’s transpired, though, reinforces Blair’s assessment. Historically, al Qaeda attacks have featured “redundancy, simultaneity, and good planning.” Last week’s plot had none of those elements.
This is not to say the threat is gone — it’s obviously not. It’s also not to say terrorists are incapable of committing horrific acts of mass murder — they obviously are. The point is that the terrorist network that executed the attacks of 9/11 is weaker and is less capable.”

That’s too bad. Hang in there. I read a good post at Booman Tribune today called “Why support the Democrats” and while he’s a little over the top IMO, he does hit, in a way, my main reason– because, you know, just a take a good look at the alternative.
“when you look at the makeup of the other major political party in this country, and the insane beliefs systems of many of its leaders, the only conclusion that a rational person can draw is to fight even harder. Fight harder for progressive policies. Fight harder to win the public relations battle. Fight harder to convince the White House to adopt the programs and legislative goals that most Americans want to see passed into law.
And that means we must also fight harder to elect Democrats… Because the alternative is a recipe for chaos and stagnation and history teaches us that those conditions increase the potential that any nation will cease to be governed by the Rule of Law and fall into the hands of despots with radical beliefs. Beliefs that will not only destroy “our freedoms” but end up killing many, many innocent people, both here and abroad…”

How is that “hope” for you?
…
Much better than it was a couple years ago when another hope (and compassion!) candidate was in office, truth be told.
Despite all the sour grapes of the past year, progressives continue to be well admired (more admired than conservatives as it turns out.) Gallup recently did its most admired living people survey. The most admired man by far is Barack Obama (30%). Hillary only beat Sarah Palin by 1% of the vote for the most admired woman, but if you add up the votes for progressives and conservatives, the progressives win by a few hundred miles.
Hopey new year one and all.

But, I s’pose that will upset folks, and I did say in my original post, that the writer is a little over the top. If I were to boil it down I’d say Vote Democrat or the country will be run by close-minded idiots waving flags and using jingoistic rhetoric but with no ideas or solutions for real problems and not a whole lotta depth– see the Republicans at the RNC, in Congress, and the last VP candidate if you need evidence. That’s why its so darned predictable. Don’t want to let a tired talking point go when it offers up the perfect opportunity to sound like the GOP gives a fig about the CIA. What a joke.
Jack Rice, former CIA special agent: ““What’s extraordinary to me is that I’ve seen the Republicans do this over and over. They will wrap something in the flag … and they will put a little lapel pin on it that says ‘national security.’ And if you ask a question about it, somehow you’re anti-American. And that’s what they’ve been trying to do to Nancy Pelosi for about six years.” (Raw Story, May 2009)

“We need to look forward, as opposed to looking backwards,” the president-elect said. “At the CIA you’ve got extraordinarily talented people who are working very hard to keep Americans safe. I don’t want them to suddenly feel like they’ve got to spend all their time looking over their shoulders and lawyering up.”
In April, after disclosing classified documents that detailed the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques, Obama said: “This is a time for reflection, not retribution.”
“Nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past,” the president added. “For those who carried out some of these operations within the four corners of legal opinions or guidance that had been provided from the White House, I do not think it’s appropriate for them to be prosecuted.”

Oh noooooo! How dare he say that then turn around and order an anti-American witch hunt, because that just has to be what it is– Cheney and Gingrich said so, as did the NRO and a bunch of other far right wing kooks with blogs, columns or a gig at Fox (not meant to imply anyone here– people can connect the dots and answer whether they think they fall in that category themselves).
i.e. I disagree with the whole “witch hunt” characterization and accusation. I think Rice is correct when he points out that the right has a tendency to wrap things in the American flag, label them “national security” and then pretend they have some kind of high ground on the topic– calling others anti-American or using ginned up terms like witch hunt but whining to high heaven when any such suggestion is made about themselves.
Gotta go. Again, wishing everyone a happy and hopey new year.

I agree with the headline.
Things will get brighter when we
take back the House and Senate from
the Dems in 2010 and after we kick
this incompetent President to the
curb in 2012!
The president unwittingly summarized
his actions as our leader when he
said that the police acted “stupidly”
in the Cambridge incident without
knowing the facts!
Well Obama acted “stupidly” when he
appointed tax cheat Tim Geithner to be
Treasury Secretary. He acted “stupidly”
when he appointed Janet Napolitano
to be the head of Homeland Security.
Van Jones fills the bill also.
He acted “stupidly” when he rushed
through the totally ineffective
stimulus bill.
He acted “stupidly” when he instituted
the extremely ineffective
foreign policy doctrine of
Blah, Blah, Blah!
So when Democrats run for office in
2010 they should wear a T-Short with
an image of President Obama on it with
the Caption, “I’m with Stupid”
underneath! LOL!

You’re lucky the President topped up the food banks and relief programs – against the wishes of the Republicans – wasted money on the poor, let them eat cake or work, etc, etc, etc.
The Republicans also tried to deny the money in the stimulus plan to shore up State budgets and probably the library you’re using to hook up to internet would have been shut by the Repubs. Are you a Democrat who used to be a Republican who turned back to the Democrats until Obama came along, and then you were disappointed and went independent?

Wow, somebody got ahold of the Democratic Koolaid that was given away. If you really haven’t been paying attention the food banks and relief programs exist primarily on donations from individuals and receive very little government aid. Most are struggling to provide due to an increase in demand and a reduction in donation. That failed stimulus bill that created a phantom 600K jobs by distributing more money to democratic areas whether they needed it or not. Oh and now we need to redo this with another stimulus even though we haven’t spent half of what was allotted the first time.

Of the $252 billion spent so far, 93 billion is what was spent on “entitlement” programs while the rest were spent on tax benefits and contracts. Tax benefit programs includes programs such as the home buyer tax credit, cash for clunkers, etc. The vast majority of contracts were against infrastructure construction contracts. The 93 billion spent on entitlements primarily consists of money spent to extend unemployment benefits and to subsidize Cobra insurance. Some of the relief programs you stated, such as the school lunch program, have been and always will be a federal program that was never was in jeopardy or threatened by the Republicans as you put it. If care to go to follow the money, you can go to Obama’s Recovery.gov website to track it. But I would advise you to be careful, not everything posted can be considered factual. Such as money being distributed to non-existent congressional districts or jobs so-called being saved because they got money to give the employees a pay raise.
