On MLK Day, President Obama Posts Copy of Emancipation Proclamation in Oval Office
Joined by a small group of African American seniors, their grandchildren and some children from the local area, President Obama announced today that he was hanging a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, on loan from the Smithsonian Museum of American History, in the Oval Office. The copy will be exhibited for six months before being moved to the Lincoln Bedroom where the original Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863.
In a nice bit of historic choreography, the president made the announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the copy of the Proclamation is hanging above a 12 5/8" bronze bust of King by celebrated African-American sculptor Charles Alston — the first African-American instructor at the Art Students League — who died in 1977. When the Smithsonian lent the bust of King to the President Bill Clinton's White House in 2000 to be displayed in the White House Library, that marked, believe it or not, the very first time that the image of an African-American was displayed in a public space in the White House. "I think sometimes in celebration of Dr. King's birthday we act as if this history was so long ago," the president said today, "And the reason we brought together some elders and some young people very briefly was not just to visit the Oval Office and see the Emancipation Proclamation, which is going to be on loan to us, but it's also just to remind us that there were some extraordinarily courageous young people like Dr. Dorothy Height, like Mrs. Eleanor Banks and Romaine Thomas and her husband, and others who were actively involved in bringing about one of the great moments in United States history." "Dr. Height has shared with us what it was like meeting Martin Luther King when he was a 15-year-old at Morehouse, visiting there," the president continued. "We heard from Ms. Glanton, Willie Glanton, who is a great activist in Iowa, about the work that she's done there on behalf of the civil rights movement, reminding us that it wasn't just isolated in some areas. "I am especially proud to have the Harveys here — Mr. Joseph Harvey and Ms. Mabel Harvey. Mr. Joseph Harvey is 105, and Ms. Mabel Harvey here is the spry young one at 102. And Ms. Harvey just now was whispering in my ear, as you guys were walking in, that this must be the Lord's doing, because we've come a mighty long way. That's what she said. And so that's wonderful to hear." The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. it declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free" — but significantly, though its moral symbolism would come to mean more, the proclamation applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, meaning it didn't impact slavery in loyal border states or any parts of the Confederacy already under Northern control. – jpt

There is still more work to be done in American society with regards all people being racially equal.
For your readers interest, the first bill that made it illegal for any British subject to capture or transport slaves within the British Empire was passed into law on 25 March 1807. However slavery was not effectively made illegal within the British Empire until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.

The “Emancipation Proclamation” was / is not worth the paper on which it is / was scribbled. It was an empty gesture that had not one iota of liberating impact, from the same President who had given the executive order for the slaughter of Lakota. The original “document” was so worthless that Lincoln gave it to then Secretary of State Seward, who gave it to his son, who auctioned it, and now it resides within the New York State Library System. I would have preferred the LBJ voting rights legislation as a more fitting tribute.

Thank you Jake, that was a sweet story. Especially the Harveys. I think about what it meant to them to be in the White House. And to be with a black President. I helped an 88 yr old bed-ridden black lady, Miss Elizabeth, vote for Obama, and I know it meant the world to her.

“The “Emancipation Proclamation” was / is not worth the paper on which it is / was scribbled.” Granted the proclamation accomplished nothing – it freed slaves in rebelling states beyond the Union’s control and kept those in the Union in chains – was an attempt to put slavery in the center of the conflict and alienate the South from potential allies such as Great Britain. Even so, it was and is a great symbol to the anti-slavery and civil rights movements. Oddly enough, the Constitution and the amendment abolishing slavery never mentions “slave” or “slavery” – just “involuntary servitude” – so technically the government can’t force you to enter the military or even serve on a jury unless you want to or are serving a sentence.

t is great Ithat we celebrate
but can anyone tell me if any slaves
are still alive? Have any of the
living ever experienced slavery in
the sense the true slaves did? What
currently are professions, facilities, etct. can we find closed to blacks?
Opportunity it there if you work for it
just like everyone else in this country.
Do not confuse someone not liking you based on your personality vs color.

There is still more work to be done in American society with regards all people being racially equal.—- and
where are they not equal? We have
asian, indian, and many others that
all vi for the same jobs. We all compete
and nothing is ever truely fair for anyone. There is no profession that
a black person is kept from if they
work for it. There are many very wealthy black people and very many successful ones. There are many non-profit schools that will help students
with costs. There are many ways and to say that someone did not get the job based on race is silly in this day and age and it just could be the persons skill level or his/her personality.

Even the slightest study of history will show you that racism and segregation existed long after slavery ended.
In fact, racist segregation extended well into the 1960s. Black people were commonly discriminated against.
Many, many people are alive who experienced and lived under that discrimination.
Lots of people would tell you that discrimination is still active today in the minds and behaviors of many people.
You’re naive if you think all of that is ‘long gone’.
We’re working on it.

Irrespective of the endless drivel to the contrary, the “Emancipation Proclamation” did not have the strength of the broken pencil with which it was written. It was a vacuous ornament that does not deserve to hang over the symbolic head of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., except perhaps to highlight the profound contrast between meaningful legislation and empty rhetoric.

Luckily, Dr King made his thoughts on the issue known during his lifetime during a little speech of his that you (and I wager a great many right wingers) are apparently not familiar with.
“Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.” Martin Luther King, Address at March on Washington, Aug. 28, 1963
Just more drivel to contrary, Right?

You will certainly also find incidents of prejudice towards Catholics, Italians, Polish, Hispanics, Ukranians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Pakistanis and so on. Ignorance has known no bounds. You left out one, Tierra. We must never forget the fact that this country was stolen from the Native American tribes and nations that existed long before the first settlers from England or Europe touched foot on America’s soil.
The crimes committed against all those you mentioned above are no worse than the genocidal slaughter and oppression that Native Americans have experienced.

I don’t think MLK would have been in favor of “equal opportunity”. He said in his famous “Dream” speech that a person should be judged by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin.
“Equal Opportunity” does a great disservice to the vary people it is designed to help. The natural question it raises in everyone’s mind it whether a person achieved his success through merit or through preference. Thus a black doctor must always justify in his own mind, mostly, and to others, his station (Yes, I know, also a white doctor benefiting from family connections).
Should we countenance racial/sex/other discrimination that favors one race over another, or work towards a situation where all are equal before the state?
If there is a case for “equal opportunity”, when will it end? Shall the daughters of President Obama receive racial preference over the daughters of a white plumber when seeking entry to a good school?

I wonder if Blacks in America are cognizant of how badly the have been served by the current majority party in both houses of Congress.
A look at the demographics which show that 70% of black children are born into fatherless household coupled with a look the statistics that indicate that children without a father in the home are more likely to live in poverty and experience developmental problems should be instructive.
It appears the that the main clients of the planned parenthood clinics are Black women.
It’s really a wonder that the current majority party in Congress continues to get such a large majority of the Black vote, usually 90% plus.

People who decry Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation as being meaningless as not applying to slaves held in Border States still loyal to the Union or outside of Rebel territory are ignorant of history and engaged in tendentious argument.
Lincoln could not-CONSTITUTIONALLY- free slaves in territory not in a state of rebellion. He had not the legal power to do so. His whole political career, his presidency and his death were testimony to his hatred of slavery.
There was hardly a black family in the country that weren’t Republicans 100 years ago. They knew who freed them. DDemocrats were the party of slavery, rebellion and Jim Crow until the 60′s.

Obama didn’t promise smaller government.
It’s the Republicans under Bush who promised ‘smaller government’ and added more onto the national debt than all the other administrations in history combined.
They were elected on delivering ‘smaller government’ and they grossly expanded both the deficit and the national debt.
We also got a crashed economy that threw many people back on welfare or unemployment insurance, etc. Independence? Self-reliance – not when 700,000 jobs a month are being lost – like under the last administration. Not when the stock market has crashed. Not when the major banks and financial institutions are going bankrupt. Not when you’re losing your job and your mortgage and your small business.
Now you get to run on your record. And its a record of dismal failure.

You seem to forget that Mr. Obama doubled Mr. Bushes contribution to the national debt in just one year in office. Next year will be even worse. He has beggared the people. Our children and grandchildren will not be able to afford the government services they will need because of Mr. Obama’s profligate spending.
That is, unless he chooses to monetarize his excesses. That will lead to unlimited inflation, the most cruel and most regressive tax possible.
Besides the common defense, the most basic responsibility of government is to a stable currency. That way the poor can hope to put aside a few bucks to eventually achieve a higher station.
Under a situation of rapid inflation such as seen under the Democrat presidency of Jimmy Carter, the poor have no hope. Inflation will steal the value of their savings faster than they can accumulate them…
Mr. Obama will steal the widow’s mite through inflation… wait for it..

Ironically, the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in states not occupied by the Union army. Slaves in states occupied by the Union were not freed by the proclamation. Abraham Lincoln did not consider blacks to be equal to whites and advocated them being sent back to Africa or to Caribbean islands. I find it funny how Obama likes to quite Lincoln and the media has even compared him to Lincoln. Obama is a one-term president and tomorrow’s election in Massachusetts will only build the right’s momentum.

You also conveniently forget the Republicans under Bush came in promising to REDUCE the deficit and the national debt. They did the EXACT OPPOSITE of what they boasted they would do.
And you also conveniently forget the Bush administration left the biggest financial disaster since the Great Depression on the table for the new administration – putting HUGE strains on both state and federal budgets.
Every western industrialized country has gone into DEFICIT funding, stimulus plans and tax cuts attempting to halt the freefalls of their economies.
