Pat Robertson Blames Earthquake on Pact Haitians Made with Satan

On the Christian Broadcasting Network’s “700 Club” today, after a lengthy interview with a missionary who talked about helping the victims earthquake in Haiti, Rev. Pat Robertson had some interesting thoughts as to why the earthquake struck the impoverished nation:

"And you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it.

“They were under the heel of the French, uh, you know Napoleon the 3rd and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the Devil.

“They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'

“True story.

“And so the Devil said, 'Okay, it's a deal.’

“And, uh, they kicked the French out, you know, with Haitians revolted and got themselves free.

“But ever since they have been cursed by, by one thing after another, desperately poor.

“That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti on the other side is the Dominican Republican.

“Dominican Republic is, is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etcetera.

“Haiti is in desperate poverty.

“Same island.

“They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God and out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now we’re helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable.”

Robertson’s tale stems from a legend that Jean Jacques Dessalines, who led the Haitian revolution against the French Army, entered into a pact with Satan disguised as a voodoo deity in exchange for a military victory, which finally happened in 1803.

One minister of a Haitian-American church — who does not believe this legend — recently wrote about the frequent references in Haiti “to a spiritual pact that the fathers of the nation supposedly made with the devil to help them win their freedom from France. As a result of that satanic alliance, as they put it, God has placed a curse on the country sometime around its birth, and that divine burden has made it virtually impossible for the vast majority of Haitians to live in peace and prosperity in their land…The satanic pact allegedly took place at Bois-Caïman near Cap-Haïtien on August 14, 1791 during a meeting organized by several slave leaders, under [Dutty] Boukman’s leadership, before launching what would become Haiti’s Independence War.”

UPDATE:   CBN spokesman Chris Roslan issued a statement Regarding Pat Robertson's Comments on Haiti, saying “On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.”

How about reporting on the “unprecedented” number of “czars” (some with questionable pasts)? How about the firing of IG Walpin in effort to protect an Obama support (and corrupt mayor)?
How about doing some investigative analysis on the TRUE economic impact of the Senate healthcare bill? (Hint: it is not even CLOSE to being deficit neutral)

People should be focused on helping the people in Haiti, not demonizing them and saying it’s their own fault for their unfortunate circumstance. But comments like this do have a nice benefit for Mr. Robertson and his followers: they don’t have to take any responsibility for helping their fellow human beings.

Anywhere there’s human misery — after 9/11, after Katrina, even after Ariel Sharon’s stroke — Reverend Pat will be there to explain to the victims why they deserved it. (And he’s not the only one.) He’s taking a beating on Twitter right now for having said this, including/especially from Christians who don’t want to see the faith smeared by his latest Old Testament thunderbolt theory. No worries there: Other Christian leaders, starting with the Pope and Franklin Graham, are taking a more New Testament view. But even conceding that he doesn’t speak for most Christians, he does still command a sizable following, no? Even after years of barfing up stuff like this.

For those who quote scripture about not judging you clearly indicate that you are just quoting something you heard and not something you’ve read for yourself. For if you do read the Bible then you would know that Jesus said to the religious scholars in John 7:24 “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” The scripture clearly indicates that a religious scholar, which is who Oral Roberts is today can and will judge so long as it is with a righteous judgment. Matt 7:1 applies to the rest of laymen who are not anointed by God to preach and teach the gospel. Some of you so called Christians need to study the word of God instead of misapplying something you picked up while half asleep at church. Stop doing “church” and have “relationship” with God.

Obama is the happiest man in America today.
He gets to spend a lot of money. And spend it on another country. And he gets to do something that everyone will get behind and support. And it will take away attention from the filth that is involved with their socialized health bureaucratic boondoggle. And the failures of homeland security. And the 10% unemployment rate. And the massive debt.
My guess is – he gets at least a 5 point bump for this for a couple of weeks – minimum.

Does Pat Robertson have first-hand contact with Satan? Why do guys like this fail to do a little cost-benefit analysis before condemning thousands of innocents with ignorant rhetoric? Robertson’s words have done more harm than good. Christ said the greatest of His commands was to love others and we should all be doing what we can to show that by helping the desperate people of this world, especially those in Haiti at a time like this.

I think you mean “self-anointed” not “anointed by God”. I don’t think you could find any witnesses of God anointing Oral Roberts, Pat Roberts, or any other religious leader, because it never happened.

I have a Haitian friend , who left there about 15 years ago, and still has family there, who believes the story and saw first hand the evil in her homeland ..

the truly sad fact is that for whatever reason, it sounds like the construction of their buildings is not adequate to protect people from an event like this earthquake, and probably many more people have died than would have if they had adequate construction.
it is the actions and policies of those governing Haiti today that have the most effect on their citizens, not a 200 year old legend.

Pat seems to have forgotten that the first duty of a Christian who finds a fellow child of God in distress is not to ask what sin that person or his ancestor may have committed, but what can I do to relieve their temporal suffering because we are all brothers (and sisters) in Christ, and all of us are sinners in need of salvation.
It is unfortunate that he has to wander off into this looney imitation of theology. Jesus would have mildly rebuked him.

If you Look up the Religous Makeup of Haiti, it says about 80% of the Population is Catholic but it also says over half the Population says it also practices various forms of Voodoo..

Not all “rational” “scientific” Christians believe the Old Testament’s prediction of Armageddon is based on the inviolate, unaltered word handed down by an avenging angry Yahweh.

Clearly, Pat Robertson is under the spell of satan, and is an evil man. Why?
He uses the Bible to express and support his own prerogatives and viewpoints.
As soon as his disciples, worshipers, and financial supporters realize that Pat Robertson is a false God, all people will benefit.
It truly is very unfortunate, and sad, that so many people and businesses cannot realize that Pat Robertson is one big evangelical fake.

Praise God for the men and women who answer the call to work in the fields.
The angry, bitter comments here are certainly no surprise. It comes with the territory, unfortunately.

Why should ANYONE blieve ANYTHING this man says? He also claims to have the power to deflect hurricanes through prayer, predicted “by the end of 1982 there is going to be a judgment on the world”, and had financial ties to former African politicians who were denounced for their human rights violations.
Robertson also claimed God told him that “mass killings” were to come during 2007 from a terrorist attack on the US. He is a fear mongering snake oil salesman who claims nuclear strikes on American soil are pending and Freemasons are part of a world wide evil conspiracy. Oh, by the way, he wants you to send him money.

Come on folks this type of stuff makes us look like idiots, and I want the world to know I do not as an American think this is somehow an act of retribution on the poor island of Haiti, no more so than what happened to the glufcoast in Katrina, or the Alaskan earthquack in the 60′s, or the second world war or the current war in Iraq. All these things are just part of the human condition. How we as a world re-act speaks of the love of what ever God there is . And by the way is his outfit given tax free credit? If so I want that to change he makes money off of people and then says stuff that hurts how the world looks at America. How can we stop him?

I don’t blame anyone but the devil. Pat Robertson doesn’t know the truth of this legend so he shouldn’t talk about it. One thing I do know is that God loves the people of Haiti more than we can imagine. He expects us to reach out to help them.
God didn’t curse these people, but He may have allowed the devil to do it. If a person makes a pact with evil that is very unwise, at the very least it can negate God’s will to bless His children. Be careful what you wish for, the devil is a liar, he may cure your cold and give you cancer.

Pray? You really think praying is going to help these people? You actually said collapsed buildings were a “blessing in disguise”?
So people have no electricity, I’m sure the water supply’s been tainted, people are homeless, there’s probably people who’ve been trapped in these collapsed buildings. These people are suffering. They need more than “prayer”. And the implication based on a FABLE that they somehow deserved this is horrific.

I cannot possibly understand how a just God would punish these people in Haiti 200 years later. They are not the ones who made a pact with satan (if anyone did). Just because Pat Robertson and others represent their church, it does not mean they represent God. The people in Haiti need help and compassion, not hatred.

So Robertson obviously thinks the devil made that earthquake.
No need to scold Robertson for that thought. For that earthquake is truly horrible.
Why did God not avert that disastrous earthquake?

Who made Pat Robertson God? I can´t stand this. If you want to make a difference Pat, don´t speak as a Christian seeming to condemn a people who are hurting….find a way to help. Use your breath to praise the Lord. I got back on Sunday from a trip, and I know some wonderful missionaries and men serving on a team digging people out right now. Please pray for them.

His ignorance and bigotry are appalling. Robertson lied about his “service” during the Korean War and got away with it till some of the real heroes started writing letters to newspaper editors showing him up for the phony he his. It’s just too bad that his being able to keep his show was part of the deal when Disney bought the Family Channel. He should have been taken off the air long ago.

This is not God or the Devil’s work. This is geology. a large fault line runs right underneath Haiti due to the Caribbean and North American plates sliding past each other. If Pat Robertson ever paid attention in science class, he would know what causes earthquakes, but obviously he’s still stuck in the Dark Ages. I would make a Pat Robertson voodoo doll right now if I believed that sort of thing.

well the majority of Haitians seem to believe similiar tales of devil pacts, voodoo, and other superstitous or religious beliefs; so are we to criticise them also? Pat Robertson might be a nutcase but so are the majority of Haitianns. Even certain crazy former Haitian presidents (like Papa Doc) believed in voodoo (recall Tonton Macoutes etc). And it is weird how Dominican Rep seems to be doing, relatively, well and Haiti is such a hellhole.
-but regardless if the earthquake was result “devil’s pacts” or natural disaster the people of Haiti need some real help and soon.

Pat, Think before you speak. It is Wise. You can’t take words back once you say it and then reaches the ears of the public. Its sounds awful judgemental on your part and I feel you’ve come to the wrong conclusions. Don’t earthquakes have to do with fault lines and formations in the earth? how old a place is and the cracks in the earth? Its inevitable that it could strike anytime. Its like that here in California. Or could it remind us of his soon coming and to keep us looking for his appearance? Jesus said it would happen closer and closer together before he came as birth pains of a mother and child.
If thats the case only prayer can stop such a force or warn us to leave the place its fixing to hit.
Its easy to make accessments as he does when he’s not in the disaster. It must be the most awful feeling to have no control of anything when a stong earthquake hits. God always filled my heart with joy when they happened in Cali but I didn’t want to die anytime sooner then I had too. And it was because I knew God and I had that security in him. Most people treasure life. If what Pat said was true then he should have told them before hand and warn them so they could cry out for Mercy and repent for their nation for all the innocent people. God surely has patience if he waited 200 years and said thats it! God aways gave warnings in the Old Testament and he has never changed.

This is a terrible, horrific thing to happen to our world. As the human race, we must ALL step up in any way we can to help these people out. This could have happened to the US, and we would be on our knees begging and pleading for help. I don’t know if it matters why this happened, but it did. We need to react, and pray. For with God, all things are possible. Please do not donate to any organizations you do not know, they could be scams.

How about Christians before the War Between the States that it was Biblically sound to have slavery? How about the Christians six hundred years ago that thought it was Biblically sound to say the earth was flat? What about the Christians of nearly two thousand years ago that said the End Times were near? What Robertson said was cruel and I am of the belief that Christ would never have said that in a situation like this. Christ’s biggest criticism while he was here on earth was of the religious authorities that thought they knew what God wanted.

you guys are totally taking Pat wrong, and yes he has done things wrong and not a huge fan. Pat is even misinformed. There are certain rules in the spirit relm, and does hold people in bondage can be illness, and financial problems. Which the country does struggle with, but he should of keep his mouth shut becuase some people will never recieve what he has said. People need support and the love of Christ to come to him, not harshness of why they are being judged by satan or God. He needs to educate himself alittle more in the spirit relm and his people skills. People should come to Christ because of love not condemnation.

All of us need to study the history of Haiti. After defeating the French, Haiti was force to pay reparations to the French for 200 years. Our hands are also not clean when it comes to Haiti. Makes you wonder who made a deal with the devil.

I think the headline is misleading. Nowhere does it say that Pat Robertson blames the earthquake on a pact Haitians made with Satan. He’s talking about something else. A desperately poor people that have been lead astray. Whether they made a pact or not doesn’t really matter. They are in a hole and need to change their ways. Bad things will happen to good people and good things will happen to bad people. That’s not the point. As Christians, we run a race to the end. The Haitians aren’t running any race. That was his point.

This is nothing new as Pat Roberts has said he speaks to God. Many Republicans will believe this statement. Look Barbara Bush called Katrina Victims, Refugees and the Media did the same. Now the GOP is saying Obama didn’t act quick enough to help Haiti but saw no problem with Bush waiting 5 days to make sure many Americans died before responsing.

He is nuts and give so many kind, loving and non-judgmental christians a bad reputation. He (and Jerry Falwell) may have a lot of explaining to do with God. It’s shameful. This kind of thing is the exact reason I’m not a Christian. The message Jesus originally brought to love your neighbor has been turned into find a reason to believe your neighbor is a devil worshipper. Also the story of Haiti making a pact with the devil is ridiculous. That supposed story was part of the largely successful campaign of the christian churches to establish and develop in Haiti. The church has always thrived when oppression, ignorance and poverty abound. They have free reign in corrupt despotic regimes. Pat Robertson knows the story although most christians would probably rather it was forgotten. If Pat wasn’t batsheet crazy he would remember that too.

Pat Robertson is not the devil. He is an American who has the right to speak his mind, even if others disagree or find it offensive. If you don’t like it, either ignore it or exercise your own right to call it what you think it is.
I think that most Christians, even those who are deeply troubled by the fact that most Haitians are Christians who also practice voodoo, which is for Christians a grave sin, care for these people as brothers and sisters in Christ. We are moving quickly to provide for their material and medical needs, and are urgently praying for them. Most of us Christians believe that offering sermons while people are still bleeding and dying in the streets, and trapped in the rubble, is insensitive at the very least. Despite the fact that he does indeed do many good works for many people around the world, Mr. Robertson has a habit of leaving as his take-away message that someone is suffering because God has targeted them for chastisement. He has no way of verifying this, so he should keep that opinion to himself.
Pat Robertson’s goofy remarks do not mean that organized religion is bad. The most organized religion in the world is the Catholic Church, which is already on the ground offering the benefits of its organization — the most effective and efficient charity system in the world. Organized religion is at this very hour saving the lives of many Haitian people, and offering aid and comfort to thousands more. Don’t forget that “organized religion” gave us Mother Teresa, and there are many more like her around the world.

Don’t be surprised that Pat thinks the people of Haiti have themselves to blame for their condition. This thinking goes bad many thousands of years. Even during the time when Jesus lived on earth, the religious leaders taught that poor people, the blind, lepers, and other unfortunate individuals deserved their condition because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors. Of course, Christ hung out with these types of individuals because he knew better. He was criticized for doing so. Some religious leaders, like Pat, still have these misconceptions today and have trouble withholding their judgment. Pat needs to step into the light by reading these verses many more times until he gets the message and stops making Christians sound like fools.

Touissant L’Ouverture and the Haitian revolutionaries who led a decade+-long revolt against France from 1791 to 1804 did so because of the brutal enslavement of said France, not the devil. Worse, as America struggled to gain its footing as the hemisphere’s first republic, our slaveowning third President – Thomas Jefferson – did not recognize the hemisphere’s second republic…HAITI! History is peculiar like that. Because our slaveocracy so feared a “black republic” in our own backyard, America did not recognize Haiti for another century, contributing to the crippling poverty that continues to plague it. Did Pat Robertson forget the story of Job? Job was a righteous man, or so the Bible says, and yet he suffered immeasurable losses. His “friends” made the same kinds of judgments as Robertson made..they figured it must have been something wrong he did that caused God to punish him and yet, the Bible tells us this was clearly not the case.
Get your nose back in the Bible Mr. Robertson and pay attention to what your read there!

Actually the current USA owes its existence to Haiti. The haitians bled off French troops who were going to invade the area next to the USA (the Lousiana purchase area) and establish a new French colony which would of blocked US expasion and would have had USA fighting French troops instead of the Haitians. So Haiti saved our cookies and gave us HALF our national territory with the Louisiana purchase when Napoleon ran out of money. People like Robertson are not Christian. They are EVIL to say such a mean thing.

As a devout Christian I can tell you that Pat Robertson’s remarks, made at such a terrible time, are a travesty and a complete injustice, making Christians look like heartless idiots. Even if it is true about the agreement with Satan, this is NOT the time to make such an offensive statement, with people suffering so greatly. Robertson is obviously either mentally deranged or quite plainly NOT a saved Christian, by making unfeeling remarks that border on madness. The God that Robertson professes to serve is looking at him and saying “This is NOT my servant and has NO PLACE with me.”

Robertson is correct about the huge disparities between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but he is dead wrong about the reason. The Haitian side of Hispaniola is impoverished in large part because the island was deforested by loggers which led to the erosion of topsoil. According to Wikipedia, in 1923 over 60% of Haiti’s land was forested; by 2006, less than 2% was. Thus, it has been poor stewardship of the countries natural resources by the government that has led to the current state of affairs and not some supposed “pact with the devil”.

Give Dr Robertson a break! Take some time to read God’s “love ketter” to us, the Bible, and you will all see for yourselves what it means to sin against a Holy God. The Prophet Daniel in the Book by the same name, would continuously pray for the sins of his country. Maybe if we had done that, we would not be struck with President Obama and have to face judgement for his ungodly decisions.

IM Pistov….i’m not sure what your point is when you remind us that Pat Robertson ran for president (it was 1988, and he did make a bid for the nomination, which he lost). And he did run as an ultra conservative Republican. And you point is…..? I’m sure he did have “quite a following”…since he had the most successful televangical network with a huge following. I think he won one primary caucus, and that ‘win’ was quite controversial. But, regardless of the controversy, what does his having run for president have anything to do with his knuckle headed comment about the pact with Satan? I don’t know why he would make such a comment, and I don’t even know of a single person in my own conservative associates or friends who would defend such a statement. If you are trying to paint all Republicans with a single brush, especially based on this statement by Pat Robertson, then you really are quite misinformed. Unlike some supporters of a certain Rev. Wright, most conservatives will come out and flatly state that this “religous minister’s” view on Haiti and the devil are very wrong. I don’t know of any that will rush to his defense. WE will put principle above politics and publicly reject his view. And I think if you review to comments in here by those of us who are known for our conservative views, you will see that the vast majority of us totally reject it. I think you can remain agnostic over the existence of satanic pacts and still denounce Robertson’s statements. To say that a devastating earthquake and unimaginable suffering, not to mention poverty over hundreds of years, have befallen Haiti because of some pact its founding elders made with Satan is ridiculous. As others in this comment thread have rightly observed, have Satanic pacts led to all the other well-known earthquakes? Have all Satanic pacts caused all poverty everywhere? Famine (e.g., Ethiopia)? How about the Great Depression? Nonsense. And yet, to say it’s not possible to make a pact with the darkest “forces” of our mind, and that doing so won’t bring us and others harm, is equally small-minded.

People, the issue here is not about Pat Robertson, his state of mind, his personal religious beliefs, his past, or even his ministry for that matter.
Rather, the issue here is the acknowledgement of the existence of Good versus evil, God versus satan, and the enmity between God and satan. Both are very real – one has to face up to that. Those who don’t are the ones who are truly mislead.
Having said that, one needs to understand that satan, the evil one, is, as the Bible puts it, a liar, a deceiver and is indeed the father of all lies. He will do whatever he can to spread his evil work against mankind with whatever authority or right he is given by man – especially if it is given to him by means of some sort of pact, which, as far as Haiti is concerned, is seemingly more than just a myth or urban legend.
That being said and if there is any truth to the so-called pact with satan by Haiti, the result or consequence of such authority or right being given to satan will in no uncertain terms result in things like catastrophe, poverty, sickness, etc. It has nothing to do with a curse – it is simply satan taking what was rightfully and willingly given to him by choices made by man and he, in return, is doing with it exactly as he pleases – to hurt mankind and to defy God Almighty.
So instead of criticizing Pat Robertson or anyone else, why dont we rather just face up to the fact that we are all ultimately held accountable for the choices we make and are bound to suffer the consequences of the bad decisions we make and to enjoy the benefits of the good ones we make.
So instead, let us rather choose correctly – God or satan?
God says in His Word – “All who call upon the Name of the Lord will be saved!”

What an incredibly perceptive post! You’re right: this isn’t about Pat Robertson claiming that ancestral Haitians are in some way responsible for the catastrophe visited upon their island. It’s about a God so petty and vengeful that he’ll strike at successive generations of Haitians because they wanted to be free. Trust God even if he keeps you enslaved, or he’ll mess you up!

Has everyone forgotten that 80% of the population of Haiti is Roman Catholic and the last time I checked, Roman Catholic = Christian? That being said, Pat needs to read his Bible, in particular, Matthew 7:1, 2. He also needs to remember that Christianity is based on forgiveness and that includes the Haitians, not just white, protestant Americans.
This is a human catastrophe that needs compassion, understanding and aid. Not Pat Robertson’s moral opinions.

The problem in Haiti is not a legendary, long ago pact with the devil. It is the usual problem with governments and uneducated populaces – the few maintain power and keep the masses poor, ignorant, and in emotional upheaval over minutiae while the powerful scrape off the profits. Then when a catastrophe inevitably happens, the comfortable beg for help from others because they won’t give up a dime out of their own pockets. The poor remain poor, and the rich get richer, while the rest of the world shakes its head and ‘feels sorry’, sending millions to pretend that they care, never addressing the REAL problem inherent not only in Haiti but in their own countries. And that problem is enforced and lauded ignorance, “Hakuna Matata”, live for today, the world owes you a living, ignorance is bliss. Robertson is as bad as our own current Congress, ensuring that people remain ignorant of what they can do for themselves by blaming the devil and other imaginary forces, insisting that only they can and will ‘save’ us all – the evil reality of which is that they themselves are part and parcel.

As far as I’m concerned, the Bible does not say that God is punishing people with earthquakes, famine, and other natural disasters. He may be testing them, and also using this as a means of providing better resources for them in the end. YES Haiti do serves satan. and so many revelation has been reveled about all the catastrophe in Haiti. Y’all don’t blame or curse on Pat Robinson like that, just live it to GOD. I have personal experience with many of these so called ‘religious leaders’. Let me just say that unfortunately they end up adding their own definitions and meaning to the bible. It is so sad to see so many people brainwashed by the nonsense. I’ve told my true stories [of horrible comments made to me and in front of me from famous religious leaders]to other Christians and they can’t handle it. Pat Robertson has always been a controversial speaker who claims he speaks for American Christians. I found out he was a man who really only has a personal agenda, whene he involved himself in politics and ran for president of the US.The bible clearly speaks to lovers of christ and of biblical principals as the scriptures say: You can not serve two masters! Being a politician in America serves man and the US government, which is not the same as serving the universal God who is not a respector of one nation over another. I am not surprised at all of his statements. Haiti has beautiful, caring, loving people and what ever God`s plan for getting the attention of all the worlds people,it is his will and command only. We can not judge or question the use of natural disasters by God as he already knows his plan for the worlds future. When he places the king of man at his throne,(Jesus) we will all know who will be in command of the world. In the mean time we are to practice God`s attributes and help one another everywhere on the earth in our times of need.

Alec, thanks you for your response. It is just amazing how even when one purposefully avoids any reference to God’s wrath as you put it, so as to avoid unnecessary confusion, someone like yourself will come along and still want to read it into a situation such as this..
So let me clear my point…
God’s wrath, as you put it is only directed towards sinners, those who have fallen short of the glory of God, (through their choice to cling to the pleasures of this world) which is every man and woman on earth AFTER OUR TIME HERE ON EARTH. That is why Jesus Christ came to the earth to provide a way for man to be reconciled to God in the afterlife through the death of Jesus on the cross. This way we dont need to experience spitritual death, because Jesus already paid the price for it.
But there is no need to refer to God’s wrath (especially the way you do) unless you are worried about it, is there?
Look, can we once and for all, put this whole issue of God bringing about calamity on mankind as being part of his wrath for the sins we are committing? No, I refer back to what I said earlier. The calamities come as a result of our decisions/choices to side with the things of this world. This is where satan walks in, says thank you and then does whatever evil he wants to.
God did what He did to save us exactly from just that – so that we do not have to suffer under the hands of the evil one. So how come we are so quick to blame God when things go wrong?
Because it is easy.
It may be easy, my friend, but it doesn’t make it right….

A poll I read once states that about 80 percent of Haitians are Catholic but that 90 per cent on the island of Haiti practice voodoo. What is that about? If you read your bible it says the unseen world is more real than the seen world-meaning when you deal with Satin and his demons you OPEN THE DOOR to curses,and the dark side of satanic practices. SO when many of those Hurricans came they passed though other islands but each time more people were always killed in Haiti. I 100% agree with Pat Robertson’s statement. For years we’ve heard alot of voodoo practiced in Hati which is demonstrative. Also Hati has alot of Roman Catholics who say Hail Mary prayer. The bible does not say pray to Mary. The bible says pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Praying to Mary is idolatry. Robertson needs to be rebuked by the very words of Jesus. Luke 13:1-5 is the most relevant passage here, when Jesus speaks of a couple of tragedies that happened during his time. The religious people of his day assumed that they happened because the people were worse sinners (in the same way that Robertson did), and Jesus’s reply was “I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
The message to take from a calamity like this is that we will all face God someday, some sooner than others. The Hatians are no worse (or better) than anyone else in this world. We all need God’s forgiveness and grace, because we’re all broken, rebellious sinners. Yet God loves us and Jesus died on a cross to rescue us! (John 3:16)

On Aug. 14, 1791 a slave leader by the name of Boukman called a secret meeting in a wood called Bois-Caiman.It was attended by a large number of slaves where they celebrated a satanic ceremony,sacrificing a pig and drinking its blood swearing to serve the devil and dedicated Haiti to him (the devil)for the countries’ political independence in 1804. I think it’s not logic to say it. It’s true Haiti use to serve in Vaudou and it’s not positive for Haiti, but a natural trouble is just natural and sometimes scientific.
The pastor could also confirm that Indonesia, Inde, Japan who had this kind of problems before also made a pact with Satan!

There are people in Haiti practicing voodoo/withcraft everyday. I live in Miami, FL and they are doing it here too. We hear about it all the time. It is no secret. They are only slightly better off than Haiti because they have resorts and an economy based on tourism. Haiti has been on a US No Tavel List for years,which is not helping it’s economy. To people that are non Christians or not familiar with the bible. There is a difference between sinning and Satin Worship. A sin will still be dealt with and punishment(consequence) will come. But a person that practices daily worship of Satin is a much deeper involvement from the dark side. My child may sin and steal something and should be punished. Pat’s comments are quite repugnant at this particular point in time with this tragedy. Why mention this now?
Is there any legitimate documentation to back up the talk about this legend? Such as newspaper accounts dating from the time of the revolution?
These comments can be construed as racist because the fact is this is one of the few black nations that actually freed themselves militarily from the yoke of their European oppressors. This fact the Haitians can be proud of. They freed themselves from one of the strongest militaries of the world at that time.

In a 2003 CNN.com story we learn that Preacher of Judgement, Pat Robertson has had his prostate removed.
Did Pat Robertson experience a judgement from God the same way he claims Haiti has?
The sad tale of Robertson’s loss of this seminal gland has a long history. You see, about 50 years ago (or maybe longer) Pat Robertson made a pact with the devil. This pact may not have been an articulated statement of allegiance to Satan but Robertson’s work reveals where his allegiance lies. Pat relentlessly propagates that Satan is real and has powers like God. Perhaps God decided to enact a judgment on Robertson for his claim that shows there are two Gods. Now Robertson roams the earth, seeking who he might devour with his odd logic and without a prostate. His hope seems to be that if you and I fear God’s judgement enough and quake at the possibility of becoming a child of the Devil, then we will honour Pat’s God the way Pat says we should.
The historical underpinnings of Pat’s pact with the devil goes something like this. Robertson became a preacher, Robertson became a bigger preacher, and Robertson decided to propagate the ancient myth that Satan has a lot of the same powers as God. Robertson then seemingly pacted to let the entire world know that Satan is out to get them and so is God. Robertson now throws his interpretation of world catastrophes up in the air and they seem to squarely land in the realm of Pat’s two-God battle. As a pact maker with the devil, Pat Robertson should take a look in the mirror long enough to see that he may have been judged by God and the tragic loss of his prostate could be a judgement from God. Perhaps God is trying to tell Pat to stop sowing his unmitigated judgment into the minds of unwitting believers. Robertson has sadly prove some of Friedrich Nietzsche words true, “Christianity is moving away from what its founder desired.” To me it is clear that Rev. Robertson is misusing his religion by preaching inaccurate words and/or ideas in an attempt to gain power as the weak man that he truely is. He wil probably preach his convictions even louder and stronger now with the attack on his statements, but that will not make him a more respected man or closer to God. My God is a loving God; not derived from hate and the punishments of Satan. As Buddah said, However many holy words you read, however many you speak, “what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them.” May Robertson’s God have compassion on his soul!

I’ve never heard of Robertson prior to this January’s earthquake, and I don’t know what he’s all about, but I hate it when people misrepresent or inappropriately identify the Christian population. From listening to and reading about the situation I learned that in that very same interview Robertson did offer both prayer and compassion for Haiti and although he may not have sugar-coated his opinion about a possible explanation for the situation, (which is based on an age-old legend, regardless of its veracity), he was expressing what he believed and he happens to have the stage to do it.
God is a loving God, and is also a Father to us, which is why he punishes us for wrongdoing (just like our dads, guys). The problem, however, is that we are all humans and we all screw things up – even ministers (if that’s what Robertson is) – and while many people may continue believing that this was just a stupid statement made by a stupid man, recognize that he’s still just human. I believe that rather than trying to be a ***, he thought he might be reaching a soul or two by highlighting what he saw as wrong in the situation. Maybe cut the guy some slack, he’s still scheduled to make a hefty contribution.

Christianity is based solely on being a follower of Christ. In that following, one is typically committed to being obedient to the commandments of God while submitting to God’s sovereignty in his/her life. In that submission one benefits from becoming more Christlike.
I don’t agree that Robertson was misusing his ‘religion’ by preaching inaccurate words in this particular instance. Again, I emphasize, I’d never so much as heard of Robertson prior to these events (I do not like televangelists because I believe that for much of them, their ministry is distorted by the need to constantly reach the masses). However, in Robertson’s case I can see that he does actually have compassion for the people of Haiti, he just expressed more than what most people want to hear right now. I truly don’t believe his intent was to be unloving. The fact that he petitioned prayer and is contributing resources supports my belief that his opinion was said in love. It may seem unloving in the same way that a father might say, “I told you not to go into the street and now, look, your favorite skateboard got run over”. It sounds like daddy’s being a butt head and you run to mommy, but the reality is, he cared, and he warned you beforehand. (switching back to my point) God warns about putting anything in our lives before him and when we do so He judges us for that. I hate to see people die, and I hate to see nations destroyed for ANY reason, but the fact of the matter is, I nor anyone on this post created this earth and we are not God. God is sovereign and can do whatever He wants – whether it seems good, bad, hurtful, or angering to us. I believe Robertson was trying to highlight that point to us, but the message was definitely not received in love.
Although most people (Christians, included) love to say Jesus was so “meek and mild,” Jesus was pretty hard core, too. This is the same divine man who threw over tables when folks were selling in the temple dedicated to His heavenly Father.
The purpose of my second post is to convey to Christ-followers and nonbelievers alike that understanding a system is better than simply condemning it. I understand why some people choose not to believe in a higher power – it’s downright hard to believe in something without tangible evidence. I also respect their decision not to believe. I am a Christ-follower and I love every single person on this post with a brotherly love regardless of the differences we may share. I believe that God created each of us and gave each of us a free will to either believe in and serve Him or not. Shame on you fellow Christians on this post for talking down to some of the nonbelievers on this post. The fact of the matter is that every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess. We can share and spread the message, but if we are not Pastors or Ministers it is not our duty to point where others have disobeyed. We have to be the light in the world, the salt of the earth, and how can we do that if everyone hates us?

People should be very careful when
donating to Haiti –there lots of
help your selves people out there.
I don’t trust that.
We should all pray for them and each
other. This could be us.

Please Lord forgive us when, we your beloved children fight, name call, abuse with harsh words, and dislove each other all the time. Help us to get along and try to understand one another. If anything you need to be trying to figure out what are you going to do to help these people of this unfortunate tradegy. This may help. Put yourself in their shoes. What if it was you right in the same situation? What would you want people to do? Okay, hopefully, your thought have changed afgter asking yourself that question. What people conveniently forget due to Biblical ignorance is that Almighty God of the Bible isn’t only love…He is also Judge, Jury and Executioner. He does what He wants, being Sovereign. We are in the end of the age. Jesus Christ warned about the increase of earthquakes in various places. Perhaps Haitians will repent of their occult practices and turn to the Living Lord. More often than not we humans are so pig headed that we need drastic wake up calls to get us on the right path.

We should not speculate about why this disaster happened. I am certain that God truly loves the people of Haiti (and all human beings) and wants all of us to come into closer relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. No matter the cause, God can and will use this terrible disaster to bring about good. The question we should ask ourselves, is whether we will get on board with the Lord and act as Christ’s hands and feet to help these people and show them God’s great compassion and love in their time of need. Let us all pray that God would heal the nation of Haiti, and let us allow the Spirit of God to work in us to help those affected by this earthquake and the millions of others in Haiti plagued by poverty, disease, and hunger.

Does anyone who visits Haiti suffer?
If they replace the dirt there with dirt from some other place, will that do it? Can Haitian dirt be used to inflict damage at other places?

I totally agree with Pat Robertson. How can we, as children of God, live in sin and have amoral lives and expect Him to bless us? We as a nation and world have been given opportunities time and again to turn back to The Lord and we ignore His calling. It is an absolute travesty what is going on in Haiti and I feel for the families and people over there but when 50% of your nation are practicing vood-doo and the occult, what do you expect?

Anna W, I agree with you. I don’t know about this “pact”, however I do know that God is calling us all to get our houses in order. If you have noticed, there has been an increase in natural disasters of huge magnitudes. My heart hurts for the Haitians and I cried and prayed as I watched the footage last night. While I was watching the footage, they panned the background and there was nothing but utter destruction and in the midst of it all, Jesus hanging on the cross was all that was left standing. So if some of you think there is no God and no devil, you better be right, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

The Bible repeats over and over that every event, including natural disasters, is under God’s control and works perfectly for His purpose. When something like this happens, a Christian should ask why. Why did God in His perfect love do this? There must be a really good explanation. And if you have retained some ability to think critically and spend a minute googling Haiti, you will find out that the country is one of the world’s dominant centers or evil cults like woodoo. Yet we prefer to close our eyes to the truth because we feel sorry for the people.
This story made it very clear how few true Christians are. Those “Christians” who are outraged by Robertson’s comments don’t even bother to open the Bible and base their ignorant opinions exclusively on their worldly upbringing. Sad and scary.

I think he has a right to his own opinion. It seems everyone wants judge him for his choice of words. Those who blame christians for their reason of not believing, you decided to not believe before he stated this. Why blame him now?
On the other hand
God is a God of Love and Judgment, if there is some biblical truth to Pats saying’s, who knows if there is, or if its not. God wants to be the only God. He will cause a “wake up call” event to happen to get them back to him. Now that’s love.
If the prophesies are true, there are going to be those who are deceived, those who actually believe every word out of the mouth of God and those who choose the way of the anti-Christ, sad but that’s what it says!

This event occurred with absolutely no warning, killed ten’s of thousands of innocent men, women and children, allowed over 4500 dangerous criminals to escape from the prison. And now to top it all off this supposed representative of God claims that God caused it!
It’s time to Wake up folks! The Bible book of Hebrews 3:14 clearly points to the one causing these evils. It says that “the one having the means to cause death, … is, the Devil”. Not God!
It’s no wonder why people are turning away from the God of the Bible!
And because of false prophets like this 2 Peter 2:2 says “on account of these the way of the truth will be spoken of abusively” But verse 3 ends on a good note… “But as for them, the judgment from of old is not moving slowly, and the destruction of them is not slumbering.”

I work in Brooklyn, NY and my friends from the caribbean also know about this story about Haiti. They said that up to now, a lot of people there still practice voodoo.

If the man is a prophet why did’t he tell us the day the earthquake was coming.then we would have believed Mr. Robertson. anyone can say it was a judgement of God after the fact. As far as the old teastement prophets, they told God,s judgement was coming beforehand, for example Elijah prophesied it would not rain for three year and it did not rain for three years, but he said it BEFORE the drought. For those of you who say “read your bible” Maybe you should read the Bible. consequenses for disobedience are clear in the Old and New Testements. even our own country faces these types of devestating consequenses. the world is moving farther and farther away from the one true God and we are paying the consequenses.
The Bible is also clear that these type of events will continue to happen and only get worse. Read Matthew 24.Jesus Himself makes it clear that devestation after devestation will continue until he returns.
The point of these things is to have people turn to and depend on the One True God Jesus Christ so that those suffering such devestating and horrific loss and torment can obtain a peace that only comes from the Holy Spirit and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I have heard it all. You know how can anyone say that the reason the earthquake happened is because they made a deal with the devil. If that is the case, then that is between them and God, not for us to point fingers, if it true. Why is it Christians have the need to point fingers to all those that don’t follow them. First of all, ones walk with God is personal, I highly doubt God was like, send a earthquake to show them what they are doing is wrong. It makes me sad that anyone could even consider saying something like that. Find me someone that is not a sinner at all. “1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1, NKJV)
As of the post from LMM about how Christianity started, you better get your facts right and if that is what you say happened, then please give something that backs that up. People that post things on here that try to put down religions should really educate themselves first before sounding ignorant, even some of the Christians that post things that they have no idea what they are talking about. These are the reasons people are disgusted with religions, to many saying it’s this way or that way. Maybe if we just stop listening to what man says and listen to the silent voice of God within us, this world would he a better place.

I agree with Pat Robertson, God did not cause the earthquake to show the Haitians who is boss. It was Satan who did this to them, in other words, it was time to pay up, and the price was their souls. Centuries ago when they needed help to rid the “French” they turned to Satan for help. He helped them in exchange for a price that would come centuries later. For those who understand to save themselves they must turn to Jesus for forgiveness and he will open their eyes so that they can see why these things happened to them.

The earthquake was NOT caused by the pact the Haitians made with the devil. It WAS caused by the pact Obama made with the devil (to get elected), and provided a much needed distraction from his self-induced downward spiral. Now he can stop hiding from the media and play the hero again.

What a bunch of morons.
The quake that rocked Haiti wasn’t the work of the devil, it was the work of plate tectonics, like every other earthquake in the history of this planet. Maybe if you fundamentalist sheep would actually crack open a book other than “My Little Bible,” you’d actually learn something.
“A pact with the devil” had nothing to do with the liberation of Haiti. The Haitian Revolution that lasted from 1791 to 1803, led by Toussaint L’Ouverture did that, a prolonged struggle led by people who believed in freedom. To ascribe any truth to the ridiculous fairy tale espoused by Robertson does a disservice to the brave men and women who laid down their lives for the cause of freedom, ad is a slap in the face to the victims of the current tragedy.
Anyone who supports Robertson’s spew should be ashamed of themselves, and should immediately turn in their Bibles, as they have obviously relinquished all rights to be called a Christian. go join another hate group, you band of ignorant idiots.

I think that everyone who is saying they are a christian needs to just focus on their own personal relationship with God. It is not up to us to be the ones to judge or determine the reasoning behind what happened in Haiti. The best we can do is pray for them. We need to worry about our own self and NOT judging other people’s hearts because it is certainly not up to us to judge. Just try to stay strong in your faith and don’t feel like you have to have the answer..There are many things that are unexplained because it is simply too much for our minds to grasp..that is why He will take care of it.

I am a Christian, and i love and respect Rev. Robertson very much; however I do have something to say about the comment that he made. ” A pact with the devil”, is this a fact, myth, an old wives fable, etc. In order to be an effective communicator in my opinion would be to assure that when something is stated as fact, it should be qualified as a fact; ie, something in writing verifying such a pact, or statements from eyewitnesses of such a pact; “something” to support such an a controversial statement. I have absolutely no problem with the truth; however let us ensure that statements made to such a large worldwide audience are indeed statements of fact.

There is no such thing as one god who rules us all and there is no such thing as a devil who influences us to do bad things. But there are such things as plates in the earth that move around and cause the gronud to shake …. And if you beleive in god you would know that god created earth for us and he made the volcanoes and he made earth quakes because of how he constructed the planet. So if you believe in all that stuff then you would know that people can not talk to or see angels they are to bright hence Satan is an angel and haiti could not make a deal with something that they can not hear or see…duh.. Also humans have always turned to stories of gods and demons that cause catostrophic events…. Storms in the sea poisidon… Rainbows in the sky gods promise to never flood all the land again…The existince of man and woman and everything else oh that what some big god up there who made us all….Think again you mindless fools is it really so hard to comprehend that we are just beautiful little sparks of life that came from nothing into something.? It is interesting how the worldly people continue to attach and character assinate true men of God who preach the unmitigated truth of the Gospel. But, we are not surprised for Jesus said if they do this to me they will do it to you also. Jesus is still the Word and the Word speaks plenty of both the devil’s designs and the Plan of God for Man. The world did not believe Noah, but laughed at the Ark built on high ground. The worldly people also do not believe in the Promise of Abraham either. Nor does the worldly people want to be redeemed from he curse so that the Blessing of Abraham may come to them. When Adam sold out and committed high treason in the Garden of Paradise, He made a pact with the Devil also and the land became cursed to the point that God destroyed it in the flood. Please just take 10 min and look online and see the places of greatest poverty and misoury and check out the people their beliefs and costums. in those places. Now look at things in this way that

The God I know is a righteous judge and if you read the books of Lev, Num, and Deut you will see that God judges nations, generations, and individuals. We as nations need to repent (turn away from our own ways, sin, and wickedness to God) and make sure our hearts are turn to the true and living God which is JESUS. As an ambassador of God we can judge sin according to the word. It is not I who judge but IT IS GODS WORD that does the judging.

How is it that at normal times(when all is well) that we never talk about in “open public” the real important and fundamental beliefs we all hold? The answer I think is that we all know there will never be any final solutions to the discussions we hold so sincerely. One day’s battle is just fodder for the next futile battle. I’m “insanely” thankful for disasters since they give us opportunities to see and understand the way the world and its inhabitants are. We all remember events like: 9-11, Pearl Harbor, the death of a loved one, and etc. What we need are eyes, ears, and senses that are working during difficult times everyday of the week. Perhaps then we will all understand ourselves and our world, so will not cause events that cost many disasters(socially, wars, and human pain).

Hey Jake, how about an apology and retraction? At no point did Dr. Robertson actually blame the earthquake on “a pact to the Devil”. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them.
In getting the story wrong, YOU are guilty of the very thing YOU accused Robertson of doing: taking advantage of a human tragedy to further YOUR own ends. At the end of the day Jake, you are in the great company of other great liberal fabricators such as Alan Colmes, Rich Shapiro, John Cook and Mike Potemra. All of you were wrong in your Headlines and story’s. You should be ashamed!

I’ve witnessed where mass of people come, accepted and immersed to Christ. Every day, we are getting more educated about the “Word of God” and know the “truth” who is Jesus and have been turned away from voodooism and roman catholic belief. Are you telling me that only 15% of the 9 millions are christians from the time I was born until 2010? During such a horrible devastation, judging the people of Haiti or announcing that this event occurred due to God’s wrath is a dangerous thing to do! Please remember the people who have suffered under the rubbles, and are still trying to survive. No one is 100% sure why this has occurred…Forget it, and stop making claims. There are millions of christians in Haiti that fear God and serve him faithfully. But today’s Haitians are not part of this pact, no more than the descendants of Jefferson responsible for the acts of their slave owning ancestor

I believe that God is always in control. There is also times when he allows things to happen for whatever reason. The Haiti crisis is very bad and very saddening. I just pray that the people get all the help they need and that God spares my country and people from the same fate. As for Pat’s views, it really is irrelevant cause what are we doing to help instead of criticising each others views. By the way, a Christian is expected to judge a badly behaving fellow Christian, but with love. See 1 Cor 5:11-13. Non Christians are off limits.

It sad to see in a difficult time like this we as a Haitians nations are being judge it better that way let who have no sin cast the first stone, no ones can question God and no ones can order God. When thing happens we quick to run our mouth to give our opinions, out of our circumstance, our misery, our agony, our pains, and defeat. God will always be God in he’s still in control yes we all sin in front of God but as a good father, he will forgive us. I just go by the Bible 100%. He says he will punish those who goes against him down to the 3rd and 4th generations. And if they continue 3 and 4 more generations. It just keeps continuing until they destroy themselves.

If you guys read the article, it said that Pat Robertson was just stating a fact. He was not putting a curse on the Haitian people. According to history, they have already done that themselves. The article also stated that Pat Robertson was truly compassionate for the Haitian people despite their sinful behaviors. He has also been sending medical supplies to Haiti, since last year, before the earthquake occured this year. He is sending millions of dollars of medical supplies to Haiti. Bottom line is, before anybody should open their mouth and start criticizing, they should find out their facts, and at least take time to read the whole article that they are commenting on. He did not say that it was God’s judgement, he was just stating a fact to think about. And as someone said, all you have to do is crack a Bible and read about nations that have chosen to rebel against God, and see what their history has been like. Israel rebeled for centuries, but when they chose to come back to God and obey, he restored everything back to them. Read your Bible guys…

To Richard and Pat,
I have been challenged recently in the wake of the Haiti earthquake and the mass suffering the countries inhabitants have been through. This is the second time I have been challenged by a natural disaster of this proportion since the Tsunami in Sri Lanka and the New Orleans flooding.
My faith and my bible knowledge have been tested and once again, I have been faced with many questions regarding where is God in all of this.
Two things that really disturbed me:
1) A top Muslim Imam preaching to locals that the reason this natural disaster happened was God’s direct judgement because of the nations immorality, drinking, promiscuity and sin.
2) A Charismatic church leader, Pat Robertson, preaching the same thing – that this was a direct act of a Holy angry God judging the people of Haiti.
I have also been challenged by a recent piece written by Richard Dawkins in the Times where he has said that Pat Robertsons comments are being true to New Testament teaching.
I disagree with Pat Robertson and Richard Dawkins. Dawkins is just using poor theology to further his cause and crusade. Again I would say to Dawkins and Robertson – “Re-read your New Testament!”
A couple of things disturbed me about this.
Firstly the sheer arrogance of these two preachers to assume that God’s Wrath would weigh heavily on one nation – when the rest of the World is just as sinful and immoral. Is that the act of a perfectly calculated, Just and Holy God? Or does it somehow seem unfair and discriminating? Such a needy people getting hammered by God when the rest of the world seems to get away with it.
Secondly, how does God show His wrath today to a sinful – under the New Covenant – in a way that is distinctly different from false religions such as Islam?
This caused me to revisit the Bible and read.
I had been studying through Romans and I believe the Lord answered my heart questions.
Here is what struck me:
Romans 1:18 says “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.”
Ok – So Gods Wrath is being revealed on mankind today… but how exactly?
The verse continues:
1:24-32 “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
Wow!
Ok. So we have to reckon with the fact that God is Sovereign and all things are from His hands. When Adam and Eve first sinned, all of creation was placed under a curse and we still see the effects of that curse today – because of man’s first sin.
However, can we say that natural disasters are a specific reaction of a perfect Judge to specific sins of specific countries?
I’m not so sure.
According to Romans – they way that God reveals His Wrath and Anger to people in these days is to hand them over to their sin completely. To let them go… just like the prodigal son. To no longer chase them or hold them but to hand them over to the full extent of their sins and let them free fall in to a depraved mindset – one that is hard and cold to God.
This is how God reveals His wrath today!
So with these natural disasters: Who is being judged? Who is really facing God’s Wrath?
I tell you – it is the countries in the world who have made their beds comfortably with their sin and immorality and idolatry.
The West – and I speak of the UK and the USA have more problems with sexual immorality, drug abuse, materialism, addictions and other forms of godlessness and idolatry than any other area in the world.
And yet we are not struck down with earthquakes, volcanoes, Tsunamis etc.
We have to reckon with Gods sovereignty in sending natural disasters.
However scripture is very clear about this. If we believe these natural disasters to be specific judgements on specific people groups for specific sin, we are failing to recognise that judgements in the Bible such as Noah’s Fllod were always announced in advance. We could only say the earthqquake in Haiti was the judgement of God if a spokesman had announced in advance 40 days and Haiti will perish.
Also Jesus talks about this in Luke chapter 13. Are people, if they suffer from natural disasters, worse sinners than anyone else? And are we in any place to pronounce judgement on them?
Jesus says:
“Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
” ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’ ”
However, God has revealed His wrath to us by giving the people of our countries over to their sin. He has turned His back on our nations and handed us over to our own selfish desires.
We see our country in so much sin and total moral mess. As a church, are we fearing God’s wrath to come via judgement of natural disasters? Or do we realize that God already has poured out His wrath on our sinful nations by handing us over to our sins? If we are not being disciplined by God for our sin, if we are not seeing revival in our churches, if we are not seeing unbelievers converted, it may be because God has handed our nation over to its sinful spirit and only a move of The Holy Spirit can save us.
Do we realize our nation
“because of your (its) stubbornness and your (its) unrepentant heart, you are (it is) storing up wrath against yourself (itself) for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.” Romans 2:5.
God is waiting for our nations, the Western world, to repent.
Haiti is a predominantly Catholic country with over 80% of it people claiming to be Catholic. 16% are Protestant and the remainder are unbelieving or Pagan. However, roughly half of the population practice voodoo.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with over 80% of the population living under the poverty line.
This is a country in need of love and charity form the rich western world.
This is a country in need of the real Gospel and real Christian love.
Maybe God has sent these natural disasters on these poverty stricken areas for other reasons:
1) To wake a spiritually dead, luke warm Western world from its sinful, wrath stricken state and to show its people and its Governments their greed and lack of love.
2) To wake up a selfish Western Church to the real physical and spiritual needs of a groaning world.
The verse I have had on my heart this week is Galatians 5:6 “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”
So what should our prayer be?
“LORD, I have heard of your fame; LORD,I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” Habbakuk 3:2
Lord, remember your mercy. Turn your face on this land once again. Cause our land to cry out to you and come to find that mercy in Jesus alone!

To all who are confused and questioning what Pat Robinson said. To make clear Pat R. is a Pastor not a Priest, but that is irrelevant. My point is he is was not expressing his own beliefs but just merely stating what had been stated in history. He most certainly does care for our nation as a whole. He is a man of God, although not perfect, has made our heavenly father proud and I am certain of that. To the non belivers, well they can’t and will not be able to understand his views until they open there hearts to christ. God Bless:)

Unfortunately, your religion has nothing to do with this problem. Plate tectonics is at work and Haiti just happens to be at the edge of one of these plates. The world is uncertain, not certain, as you religious hacks profess. Chaos is at work and these kinds of problems will continue to get worse because populations live at the edge of these plates.
God has nothing to do with any of this and I whish you who prosess this kind of rubish, take a course in Geography. Science is a better answer than the crap you spread.

Even if what has happen in Haiti is a result to them ” making a pack with the devil” I don’t agree with how Pat broadcast it to the world. This is not the time to point fingers but to come together as people of God and help the needy. In Isaiah 41:17. The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them myself, as the God of Israel I will not forsake them.

I teach history and have for 40 years. Robertson can say anything that he wants however distorted. He can mix up his Napoleons(the Third put an Austrian on the throne of Mexico during the U.S. civil war and perhaps Reverend Pat will save that Benito Juarez made a pact with the Devil to defeat him before the next Cinco de Mayo celebration) call the Dominican Republic prosperous–that is of course relative and I think we would all be better off if Reverend Pat lived there.
He is Christian? H.L Mencken, a conservative of a libertarian bent, contrasted Christians, people who take the Gospel to try to live with love and in peace with “Christers” the 1920s fundamentalists who were always pushing people around, trying to stop the teaching of evolution, force their own often hypocritical moral standards on to everyone around them and run interference for the Coolidge-Hoover Republicans by blaming all social problems on individual sin and the secular nature of modern life. That is all Reverenc Pat is and his “influence” in the U.S. should be a source of real shame for all reasonable and humane people.

Ok, so Haiti suffered this earthquake because of it’s pact with the devil to gain independence? I wonder how they got all the Haitians to agree at once, as it hasn’t happened since, to my knowlege. And also, following this “biblical” premise, are the Chileans the sons of the devil himself? I mean it’s not stopping there at all! And what about the Turks? And all these huge tornados in the U.S., are their citizens just a pack of immoral sinners? I hope Pat Roberts and I die on the same day. I want to be there when God slaps him in the head and sends him to his real master.

What are we fighting for? According to this argument I think it’s safe to say that it isn’t Haiti we are so passionate about. We have gotten off track. Whether Pat’s diagnosis is right or wrong is really irrelevant. The fact is that as Christians we are called to show the amazing and boundless love of God. Does attacking a nation help that? Does attacking a man? Let’s make sure our words and efforts reflect what we claim to believe.

Today on the 700 club the character, Pat Robertson ranked Condoliza top among black women. He said she is at least 2nd or 3rd or 4th if not first amongst black women. He sounds like a slave master ranking his property for sale. Everyone with a christian label and smile on their face is not bringing us good news people. At one point does he beleieve black women need him to rank them to give them validity?
