The Obamas Go for Shave Ice in Hawaii

President Obama and his Hawaiian vacation party, fresh from watching Ohio State defeat Oregon in the Rose Bowl, took a late afternoon New Year's Day trip to Island Snow shave ice and clothing store–one of the Obama's favorite haunts in Kailua.

The large Obama tribe — which included Malia, Sasha, family friends Marty Nesbitt and his family, Eric Whitaker and his family, island golfing buddies Greg Orme and Mike Ramos and others–ordered 19 shave ice cones in all the various flavors and colors of the rainbow, seven of them with ice cream on the bottom. There were so many orders, Obama had to consult a cheat sheet with all of them written down.  First Lady Michelle Obama didn’t make the outing.

Asked if he was gonna add the traditional Japanese adzuki beans to his order, the president replied, "No. I like my shave ice straight. … No frills."

Obama's "snowbama" order included lemon-lime, cherry and passion guava flavors.

The president, who was sporting shades indoors and was clad in a plain tee shirt and shorts, commiserated with Oregon fan Orme and tried to cheer him up by saying Ohio State fan Nesbitt would pay for his shave ice cone.

Once outside, daughter Malia could be seen sampling her dad's concoction.  Small but vocal crowds gathered in the parking lot of the tiny store to applaud and wave to the president. Mr. Obama waved back as he jumped back into his black SUV for the ride back to his vacation rental.

Glad he can afford a vacation and shaved ice… most of us unemployed would love to be able to afford food for just one week.
ABC you are getting way to obvious of your drooling love for Obama with these gooey fluffy non stories… you most defenitely are a bogus news site.

This is pure BS. Barricades while the commoners behing barracades oggled the quasi royalty munching shaved ice? With 16 friends, the Secret Service had more on their hands. What about the ambulance dispatching the little darling with a chin bump during a time health care costs are raging? I voted for him; I won’t be fooled again.

This President is supposed to feel for the downtrodden, the disadvantage, the unemployed, the poor, while golfing, playing tennis, staying in a premium rented vacation home, soaking in the sun and palm trees. Yes We Can.

Barry’s having a good time! That’s all that matters.
Gee, I hope the idiot gets in a few more rounds of golf. We wouldn’t want him to feel denied.
Barry sure loves the perks but falls short of doing the actual job of POTUS.
Barry got a briefing before Christmas about the terror threat. The article is posted at Newsweek.

I am so happy to see President Obama enjoying himself with family and friends. He is a great father who loves and cherishes his children. When his work as a president is finished, his children will remember that they were never neglected although he was busy looking after the country. I think, unlike some people who berates him, he is doing a very good job as president They do not understand the job or just does not like him for some other reason.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
What’s the matter Michelle, jealous much ?
All you people who hate the idea that President Obama had the nerve to take a vacation perhaps should try doing the same. It seems you all need some down time to re group, relax, take a breather, spend some time with your family, pamper yourselves. Your anger and hostility can be seen as a sign of stress. Statistics will show a vacation or some down time could help put things into perspective. You know like understanding that no matter who you are or what you want, being the President of the United States is extremely stressful. Knowing that as President you NEVER have an off day. Knowing that a President should be afforded a chance to relax when they can, enjoy family and friends. Why would anyone want our President to live in a bubble, work 24/7 and only get let out if and when some people think it is appropriate? That is stupid and unhealthy and unreasonable. Oh, and by the way ALL Presidents have lived in luxury, why would anyone expect the President of the United States, the most powerful country in the world would live like a pauper? Nothing like that was EVER suggested for previous Presidents.
################################################################################
Barry needs to resign. We American citizens should demand it.
#################################################################################What we American citizen should be demanding is that hateful, intolerant people like you take a chill pill and support and respect the duly elected President of the United States. The same way people demanded that same support and respect for the previous President. While YOU may not accept it President Obama HAS brought our country back from the brink of financial collapse. He has done and has tried to do a great deal for the American people in his 11 months in office. But since you obviously don’t care about our President and what he IS doing there is no need to try and educate you. I would suggest you google Obamas achievements and check it out with an open mind.

Way to go Obama. I hope you get the rest you need and deserve. You had a big first year in office and have an ever bigger year ahead of you with the 2010 elections on the way.
We apologize for the Congress we sent you but I hope we can do better in 2010. We’ll try to send you more support for your agenda so the nay sayers can stop criticizing you for not accomplishing your agenda and as for bipartisanship, well, we know that word takes two to be functional…

All the anti-Obama ranters should attempt to be fair and balanced in their attacks.
The last President during his first year took the entire month of August off to vacation in Texas and got back in Washington just in time to be caught off guard by the 9/11 attacks. Hard working Republican that fellow.

Posted by: tierra | January 2, 2010, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

You want fair and balanced, tierra? How about this from the Heritage Foundation? Parse this with Obama’s campaign pledge to not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year.
“While millions of Americans are more than ready to put 2009 behind them, they should know that Congress failed to reauthorize dozens of tax breaks for individuals and businesses before the Members scurried home for the Holidays. These “expiring provisions” affect every American in one way or another as individuals or businesses. By allowing them to lapse, Congress has enacted tax increases at time when these taxpayers can least afford it.” Heritage Foundation, 1/1/10

I didn’t say they were fair and balanced but you seem to want to discuss real issues rather than smearing the President for taking a well-deserved vacation. I’m ready to discuss the real issues of our day, like Congress’ failure to act and Obama breaking his promise. Did he even try to voice an opinion about these items? If he did I never heard it. Yet it affects thousands of hard working Americans.

If you prefer to discuss the issues, tierra, perhaps you would like to respond to Putin’s reaction to Obama’s concessions on a missile defense system in Eastern Europe.

And Putin’s reaction?
“In order to maintain balance, without developing the antimissile system just like the U.S. is doing, we have to develop an offensive combat power system. Since we are not developing our own missile defense, there is a threat that our partners would feel totally secure having created an umbrella against our offensive systems. Then our partners might do whatever they want; the aggressiveness in real politics and economics would increase because of the broken balance.”

“Today, however, analysts pointed out the decision would help Obama secure Moscow’s co-operation on a possible new sanctions package against Iran and would further his desire to “reset” relations with Moscow following a dismal period under the Bush administration.
“It would significantly boost the chances of a new treaty on strategic nuclear arms reduction between Washington and Moscow, they said. Both the US and Russia have agreed to come up with a successor treaty to Start 1 by December, when the current agreement expires.” GuardianUK 9/29/09

Tierra,
fyi, Obama had played more golf in his first 9 months in office than GW Bush haad managed to get in in 2 years and 10 months, per CBS news. That was back in October.
To me, it is embarrassing that the President of the US spends his time playing when the country is suffering. And the only strategy the Democrats seem to have about the terorist attacks are 1] apparently they were isolated extremists; 2] Bush did it; 3] if Bush didn’t do it, the Republicans did it; 4] everything worked really, really well, you know, like clockwork; 4] if there were any alleged attacks, the misguided souls need government lawyers and the right to remain silent so we cannot avert any other isolated extremist attacks; 5] let’s strip search grandma and send her photo to everyone via Blackberry so we can have a good laugh at her expense [embarrassment]; 6] appoint as head of the TSA a guy who has confessed after hiding it for awhile that, yes, he did break security and privacy rules, but he had a good reason- he wanted to get even with his ex’s boyfirnd and really cause him embarrassment.

Anybody who is begrudging the President a couple of rounds of golf on his holiday is a scrooge beyond belief – or just looking for things to pick at the President with.
And actually, the President’s response on the airplane bomber was this . ..
“There were bits of information available within the intelligence community that could have and should have been pieced together,” the President said, “It’s becoming clear that the system that has been in place for years now is not sufficiently up to date to take full advantage of the information we collect and the knowledge we have.”
The President said that Umar Faruk Abdulmutallab’s father not only warned U.S. officials in Africa about his son, but that that information was also passed on to the intelligence community weeks ago, but not properly distributed. Had that information been shared and properly connected, the President said a “fuller, clearer picture of the suspect would have emerged. The warning signs would have triggered red flags, and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America.”
“When our government has information on a known extremist and that information is not shared and acted upon as it should have been so that this extremist boards a plane with dangerous explosives that could have cost nearly 300 lives, a systemic failure has occurred, and I consider that totally unacceptable,” he said.
And he ordered immediate thorough reviews.

Boy, have my family changed their tune this last year. I travel extensively in my job and meet with a wide range of people, trust me – the feelings have changed. People are getting more and more angry with him.
No, I really believe it is “one and done” for obama.

ceeleelee I don’t believe you were ever a Democrat!! You want us to believe that you are completely disillusioned with Obama and will now vote Republican because he is not worthy.. or whatever. Please, I don’t know if he will be President for 8 years, but I do know that he is our President for the next 3 and he has been expected to handle an unprecented number of problems. The Party of “No”,”Pettiness” “Lies” and “no solutions” has made this their only goal for the next 3 years. Republicans need to take a good look at themselves. They aren’t making him look bad, they are making themselves look bad. We need a two party system, but we need each party to put this country first instead of politics. That’s not happening.

Obama hasn’t even been in office a year yet and he spent the whole summer on vacation in Europe, Africa, and over a week at one very expensive, exclusive bed and breakfast inn on Martha’s Vineyard and traveling all over the American west, visting such places as the Grand Canyon. Now he’s on a another expensive vacation in Hawaii. He has used Air Force One for all of this and all of it is at the taxpayers expense. When is he actually going to spend time in the oval office doing the job he was elected to do? I certainly hope he’s only a one term president because we can’t afford eight years of him! Not only is he putting us in bancruptcy with his vacations but there were also the MANY inauguration balls that cost us millions and then there’s his dates with Michelle that cost thousands of dollars that we pay for to! He claims that he cares so much about us but most of us taxpayers struggle to live from month to month and yet he spends our money like it’s water coming out of a fountain! That’s not caring for us!

SharonKathleen – I don’t want you to believe anything. It does not matter to me one whit whether you or anyone else believe I once was a Democrat. Really. I did not vote for obama because I thought he was a total fraud and it looks like I was right.
I am also not a Republican, but I feel they should hardly be faulted for being the party of no when they are not allowed to see, read or have input into bills they are being asked to vote on. Since the Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate it really shouldn’t matter if the Republicans say “no.” The Democrats should be able to do it all by themselves without working sweetheart deals. Right???
What’s more, no one can “make” obama look bad, he manages to do that all by himself.
Since I pledge no loyalty to any political party, I will vote for the person I feel represents me best in the upcoming elections, just like I did in the last. Based on what I am seeing now it will not be for any Democrat. Trust me.

I would love to see a woman be President but please, Governor Palin cannot even scratch the surface of the intellect and experience that Obama or Hillary Clinton have.

Yes, she should become a senator first then immediately begin campaigning for the presidency. That would qualify her.

===When is he actually going to spend time in the oval office doing the job he was elected to do?===
The pattern was established early in his career. As soon as elected for one position, he began campaigning for the next one. He doesn’t spend much time actually doing the jobs he has been elected to do. But that has qualified him to be president, at least to 52% of the country.

Bush received strong bipartisan support from the Democrats all the way up to the attack on Iraq – that neo-con decision split the country with hundreds of thousands in the streets protesting.
Then the country became more and more mired in Iraq – further divisions. Most people knew “Mission Accomplished” was a lie – just as the weapons of mass destruction were a lie, just as a ‘short’ war was a lie . . . and so on.
By the end of Bush’s term, not just the Democrats were against him – 70% of the people disapproved of the job he was doing.

tierra First of all George Bush didn’t take nearly as many vacations as Obama by far! The vacations that he did take were to his ranch in Texas which, since he owned the place, cost the taxpayers nothing in hotel fees. Basically the only cost for his vacations was for the use of Air Force One and Marine One. He did visit his parents in Maine a few times but even those vacations were cheap compared to the Obama’s vacations. Also he and Laura were home bodies. They seldom went on dates. The dates that they did go on didn’t cost many thousands of dollars! Even their daughter Jenna’s wedding was just a simple wedding and not nearly as expensive as even one of the inaugural balls! She didn’t even have it in a church! It was at the ranch with just a few friends and family present! The Bush’s did take vacations but the cost of their vacations was not nearly as expensive as the Obama vacations. The Bush’s aren’t party people. They did attend parties and state dinners occasionally but their idea of a good time was time at the ranch with friends and family or a quiet night in the family quarters in the white house! Those things don’t cost thousands of dollars!

JImmyV,
This is the problem with your sort. Bush was on vacation nearly 33% of his two terms. Let me say it again, 33% of the time he was on vacation. It’s the main reason we were attacked for 9/11 since he didn’t want to be bothered with the memo warning an imminent Al Qaeda attack.
Here are some stats for you:
He spent 487 days at Camp David (149 visits) and 490 days at his Texas Ranch. THat does not include his annual vacations to Kennebunkport and other places.
Go ahead and nominate Palin. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

It’s good to see that ABC is doing the hard-hitting journalism to keep us all abreast about what’s going on the world.
While the best and brightest at ABC are ttracking down the shaved ice, INTERPOL iis buying more hard drive space and file cabinets.
Why? Because the “shaved ice” President just gave them a blank check to run amuck INSIDE our own country – with NO hope of even checking behind them. Now, thanks to an executive order signed by this president, nobody can even know what they are doing – INSIDE our own country.
But, as long as we get these shaved ice updates, we know that ABC is on the job.
Thanks for keeping the American people informed about the things that matter, ABC.

tylerkad I am not denying that Bush took vacations. I know he did. However, in his first year as president he didn’t take nearly as many vacations as Obama has. Also the cost of all of his vacations put together during the whole eight years that he was president didn’t cost nearly as much as Obama’s vacations just this year! That’s the thing that I’m griping about, the cost! When Bush was at his ranch and Camp David it cost the country nothing for hotel bills because he owned his ranch and Camp David belongs to the government. The only cost when he visited them was traveling expenses for Air Force One and Marine One. Much of the time when he visited his parents in Maine he stayed with them in their home. When he stayed with them he had no hotel expenses either. The main thing that I’m complaining about with Obama is not the fact that he takes so many vacations, although I do think he takes entirely too many. I’m complaing about the cost of his vacations. Since most of us taxpayers are barely living from month to month and we are paying for every one of those vacations with our tax money I don’t see how he can in all conscience live as luxuriously as he does and spend our hard earned money like it’s just water running out of a faucet! I’m going to repeat that if Obama continues taking so many luxurious and expensive vacations and taking Michelle on dates that cost the taxpayers thousands of dollars, we can’t afford eight years of him because he is going to put us into bancrupty! If he wants to take luxury vacations and wants to take Michelle on dates that cost many thousands of dollars, he should pay for them himself! We shouldn’t have to!

tierra What do you call the summer long vacation that he took beginning about in May or June and ending the last of August? He took his kids to Euro-Disney in Paris, then he took them to Africa and visited the place where Michelle’s ancestors were shipped out as slaves to America. After that they stayed for 10 days at a very exclusive and expensive bed and breakfast inn on Martha’s Vineyard island during which the president played golf for 10 days. Then after that they traveled west and visited the Grand Canyon. All of this was reported in the news. For about 3 months this last summer the president spent very little or no time in Washington. He was traveling with his family. I don’t know what you call it but that’s a summer long vacation to me and the taxpayers paid for it!

How can anyone believe that everyone is just getting along??? This has been the most divisive year in American politics in a long time. This country is not united it is on its way to becoming divided. Private citizens don’t trust the government, one race doesn’t trust another. and this is news!!??

Oh no! Obama is spending time having shaved ice with his family, and I don’t like because I’m a big hater and wish I could have shaved ice with my family! LOL

JimVgirl: Every president receives a daily briefing no matter where in the world he is, no matter if he’s traveling with his family or taking “vacation” time. There is cost for transporting staff and security. For example, it cost taxpayers every time Bush went to Crawford (which he did more than 400 days during his 2 terms) and there will be costs attached to every Obama trip too, with or without his family. It is customary for ALL presidents.
That’s not to say I am not unhappy about wasteful government spending – I just think it’s better for Americans to focus less on how the White House was decorated for Christmas and more on demanding publicly subsidized election financing.
What about the $3.3 BILLION lobby business that is buying off our elected officials? Now that’s a fight worth picking.

Obama and his family went to the Honolulu zoo on their last day of vacation. I was wondering if they felt it was necessary to closed it to the public as they did Hanauma Bay?

CenterOne It’s not customary when they abuse the privilege and carry it to the extreme! I agree, though, that our elected officials should not be bought off by lobbying businesses and that should be investigated and stopped. What bothers me more, though, is the tax money that the president and our other elected officials are spending foolishly. I am a conservative republican and I pinch every penny I have until Abe Lincoln screams. I have to to make ends meet. I expect the president and our elected officials to do the same!
