Dooms health care reform in the short term, which sucks for millions. But it will happen, it’ll just take a few more years of everyone’s copays being ratcheted up and employers dropping insurance coverage for even idiots to understand the implication of the current system. And we’ll be in a worse budget hole by then, but that’s life.
On the bright side, even the dimmest bulb is going to quit insisting that Democrats have a filibuster proof majority (only if you included Joe “Vote for McCain” Lieberman). And Republicans will have to take full responsibility for stopping anything from getting done. Democrats only had the 58+2 majority for about 6 months (Spector switched in April, Franken couldn’t vote to break filibuster until *July*). They were certainly not rushing something as major as health insurance reform, so it’s not that surprising they didn’t ram anything major through.

Thank you Massachusetts!
Thank you Independents!
You put Obama in the White House–you will take him out.
Time to fix the mistake.

Scott Brown “gets it”.
He and Palin have something Obama will never have.
Common sense and people sense.
How’s that oratorical brilliance and Ivy League education working out for him?

“Millions of Obama voters naively believed that he was going to stand up to corporate special interests on behalf of working people. He didn’t.
People do not like wimps who compromise their principles to stay in power”
From the Huff Post
The blogger’s first mistake was to believe that Obama actually has principles.

And you say it will take a few more years to get health care, this pork filled bribery to pass was not going into effect for four years or did you not know that, but the taxes would start on passage. This will give us the oportunity to enact true health care reform that starts at the same time as the taxes. Some refure to Cobra as being lowered by this 2000 page monstrosity and it does if you can wait for four years.

Do you actually believe that? Republicans could have implemented any health care reform they wanted during their years in power with Bush – Democrats would have lined up to go along. It is clear the only priority of Republicans is the status quo, and from their THREE consecutive records for filibusters, it is clear they are not interested in doing a single thing.
And what absurd world do you live in where major reform can be started over night? Every major program has a ramp up period, and I have trouble arguing against the fiscal responsibility of actually paying for those start up costs.

This was a victory for freedom!
People in America don’t want for washington to plan and control every aspect of their lives.
They still want to wake up every morning to the reality that they can make decisions for their own life. That they can succeed or fail – based on their work, and on their decisions.
America – appreciate that you are special. That the freedom to suceed and fail is what makes you great.
Let the people who want to hand over the intimate decisions of their lives do so in Europe.
KEEP AMERICA FREE!

DEMS cant get anything done with 60 votes. 60 votes the SUPERMAJORITY. Now its 59 and that wont make any difference. Wise up and listen to the people of America. The majority of AMERICA DOES NOT WANT THIS PARTICULAR HEALTH CARE BILL. PERIOD!!! Rep or Dem or independent. Start over, let everyone in on it work it as leaders of your district. The DEM’s were given a warning last night in MASS. better start listening.

Can you believe that now its not Bushes fault but it will be the republicans fault nothing gets done. Well if it takes bribes and lies to get stuff done you are probably right, we the voters are tired of lies and back room deals and we will vote all the liers out of office and their Czars can go with them all 40 of them.

There is nothing wrong AT ALL with filabustering socialism.
We should celebrate the filibusters and pray that they continue until the socialists stop trying to amass power that should rest with the people.

Actually, the Massachusetts vote seems to have very little to do with Obama from what I saw in the polls. I also think the folks at Think Progress make a great point,”Brown doesn’t make a very convincing messenger for opposing the policy behind health reform. As a state senator, Brown voted for Massachusetts 2006’s reform law which, like the Senate and House bills, includes an individual health insurance mandate, insurance exchanges, government affordability credits and insurance regulations. As a result of the law, 98% of Massachusetts residents have health insurance and 79% want the law to continue. Unlike voters in more conservative states, Massachusetts residents don’t fear national reform because it would result in a government take over of health care — they’ve already benefited from the provisions in the Senate health care bill and they support them.”

ted | Jan 20, 2010 11:39:06 AM
The only had 60 votes for SIX MONTHS. How much did you want them to rush through health care?
Democrats only had 60 votes – if you include Joe “Vote for McCain” Lieberman as a Democrat – for SIX MONTHS.
So after months of claiming health care is rushed, now Republicans are condemning Democrats for not rushing more? How blind is the Republican base to swallow this?

Posted by: jhw539 | January 20, 2010, 11:49 am 11:49 am

So…..I thought the purpose of democracy was that a majority decided by election rules. Isn’t that in the constitution? Requiring 60 votes to end a filibuster is un-constitutional and robs this country of effective government. It holds the majority party hostage to the minority and robs citizens of their voting rights to decide elections and agendas..Get rid of the 60 vote rule. Let the citizens by their votes….I am sure Republicans are ecstatic but basically all that this will result in is gridlock…They will think people will flock to their party and their ideas…They are wrong…they are simply running from Democratic ideas…I for one give up….neither party is worthy of my vote any longer..

so…. when the Dems had their super majority, all ills of society were the dems fault… now since they no longer have it… the republicans will be responsible for everything
see how easy it is to figure this out

Posted by: OOPS | January 20, 2010, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

And Republicans will have to take full responsibility for stopping anything from getting done.
Posted by: jhw539 | Jan 20, 2010 11:02:47 AM
I’m sure the Republicans will be more than willing to take responsibility for “stopping anything from getting done”. That’s the problem with the healthcare bill now. It’s a “something is better than nothing” bill. The people spoke loud and clear in Massachusetts yesterday that they don’t want a “something is better than nothing”… they want something that will make a difference without costing us TRILLIONS of dollars. They want a bill that reflects the needs of Americans, not a bill that reflects the liberal desires of Pelosi, Reid and Obama.
No one ever said the Republicans don’t want to do anything about healthcare reform, they just don’t want to jump on the bandwagon of “ObamaCare” simply because certain liberals think that’s the way it should be.

A Republican Senator in the Massachusetts seat held by Ted Kennedy……..now that is CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN.

No one ever said the Republicans don’t want to do anything about healthcare reform,

I always forget how very literal Republicans and right wingers are. A couple people cerainly hinted at it very strongly (the Waterloo quote comes to mind) and actions speak louder than words– um, why didn’t those Republicans do something about it under Republican admins or Republican leadership in Congress again?
We all get it.
Because they don’t want to do anything about health care reform (unless you count kicking the can down the road and hoping our kids and grand kids will be all right despite spiraling costs as “doing something”)

As a lifelong Mass resident I can assure you that yesterdays vote has everything to do with the Obama/Pelosi/Reid agenda. We rejected The health care bill, we reject cap and trade, we reject TARP, we reject the government takeover of private business, we reject out of control spending. Basically, we’re rejecting just about anything the power mad congress is trying to ram down our throats. I expect that what has begun here with the election of Scott Brown will turn into an nationwide avalanche come November. You Democrats keep fooling yourselves and one day you’ll open your eyes to find that your party has gone the way of the Whigs.

The House, the Senate, AND the White House. If you can’t pass your agenda with that kind of institutional support, and people start voting you out you either A: Compromise and modernize your aspirations to something feasible or you B: Use any tactic at your disposal to circumvent the political will of the electorate and when the time comes you resign or retire, taking your millions out of the country and letting the “refuse” of the nation squirrell around for what’s left.
Look at Obama, Bush, Pelosi, Reid… Tell me what strategy they are choosing to follow and react to them accordingly.

First chance we got. Yesterday!
Frankly Bush might just as well have been a democrat. He never saw a spending bill he didn’t like.

“The corrupt administration in Washington cost Coakley the election in Massachusetts — plain and simple. The lies, the health care, the lack of transparency, the arrogance were all against her. Throw in the LA purchase and the Nebraska bribe and that is when her poll numbers starting turning sour. But when Obama said Unions are exempt from the tax and other taxpayers would pay it, that did it. Obama came down and stumped for her. That was like pouring salt on a wound. They did it to themselves” Posted by: 1CAROLINAUNC
That’s part of it but Martha Coakley, like ALL Massachusetts Democrats has a sense of entitlement. They really have no idea what people want and don’t want. And they don’t care. They feel that we are not intelligent enough to make decisions based upon tha facts. This shows when you hear Democrats calling TEA bagggers “rednecks” and “racists”. The Democrats are so arrogant and obtuse. It was starkly evident in her contempt for the voters. Her comments, especially over the last month left people shaking their heads in dismay. And when the Kennedy’s (most of whom no longer live in this state) showed up as though by virtue of their name alone we would all fall in lockstep behind Coakley they weresurprised to find that they hold no weight any more. Ted Kennedy kept his seat for one reason only. He had a lot of power and brought a lot of money to this state. The Kennedy name may as well be Smith or Jones. They mean nothing anymore.

Catherine you need to smarten up. It was the Republican Bush administration that designed and put in motion TARP. It was the Republican Bush administration that increased the national debt as much as all the other administrations in history combined – and this supposedly during fat economic years.
It is ignorance that will destroy America.

This was a Political Tsunami!
It’s not about anger with both parties,
Mr President!
The anger is directed at you and your
Democrat allies in Congress who have
been ignoring the vast majority of
U.S, citizens who are opposed to
your Unconstitutional Healthcare Bill!
We’re not going to fall for that
“a pox on both their houses” crap that
was thrown about when Ross Perot was
running for President and 20 percent
of the electorate wasted their votes
on Perot and helped Bill Clinton get
elected with less than 50 percent of
the vote.
This vote was directed at Democrats and
their socialistic agenda and
No One Else!
If the Dems are smart they will scale back the Healthcare Bill and work with
Republicans to pass a bill everyone
can support.
Ignore the people at your own risk.
Novemeber will come be here
before you know it!
