After Calling Liberal Activists “Retarded,” Rahm To Meet With Disabled Rights Activists Wednesday

The Special Olympics announced Tuesday evening that members of the disabilities rights community will meet Wednesday afternoon with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, after the fiery Chicagoan admitted to having referred to some liberal activists as "f—ing retarded."

Emanuel was quoted in the Wall Street Journal last week making the comment in an August meeting with some liberal activists who were threatening to run TV ads against conservative Democrats hesitant to embrace President Obama's approach to health care reform.

After the Journal story was published, Emanuel called Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver to apologize.

Shriver and four othe advocates for the disabled community will meet with Emanuel at the White House at 2:00 PM tomorrow, Wednesday February 3, 2010.

The Special Olympics said in a statement: "The meeting will be a face-to-face discussion with Rahm Emanuel about the suffering and pain of people with intellectual disabilities that is perpetuated by the use of the terms 'retard' and 'retarded' as well as the damage that can be done by the casual use of the R-word – even if it is not directed toward people with intellectual disabilities."

The group said it will "invite Emanuel to take the R-word pledge at www.r-word.org and to join in the March 3, 2010 Spread the Word to End the Word campaign, as well as invite him to be a leader of change surrounding the pervasive and damaging use of the R-word."

The others who will be present are Andrew Imparato, President & CEO, American Association of People with Disabilities; Hannah Jacobs, parent and R-word advocate; Julie Petty, self-advocate and former president of Self Advocates Becoming Empowered; and Ricardo Thornton, self-advocate and Special Olympics athlete.

Rahm is one foul-mouthed ballet dancer.
Must be trying to compensate for something.

Emanuel was at the time defending extreme right wing Democrats who have been bought and paid for by the insurance industry.
Next week, the House will vote to repeal the anti-trust exemption that health insurance companies have enjoyed for the last 65 years.
This will enable the government to at long last begin a long overdue investigation of price fixing and collusion in the health insurance industry.
It is important to note who is voting against this measure in both parties. Those are the people who we should vote against, whatever party they are.

First President Obama makes fun of the Special Olympics and now CoS Rahm Emanuel uses the “R-word”. I see a pattern here in the Obama White House…
Perhaps Rahm should meet with the folks from Obama’s own President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities

The Power of Palin :)

This is ridiculous I don’t see Palin going after her pal Rush for saying a lot worse against the most defenseless members our our society, and I’ve heard her use offensive language publicly several times.
Emanuel allegedly (I use allegedly because it was done in private) used it to describe the actions of able bodied people. It had absolutely nothing to do with the disabled.

I hear the word “retarded” being used in casual conversation more often these days. This trend needs to be nipped in the bud.

Should we ban the word idiot, too? Lame?

Anyone who thinks “ballet dancer” is an insult is pathetically insecure

“Emanuel allegedly (I use allegedly because it was done in private)….”
________________
The word “allegedly” has nothing to do with being said in private or public. Emanuel called called Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver to apologize. Doesn’t that indicate there’s no “alleged” about it?

Rahm’s comment was intentional over the top. This is part of the Obama administrations efforts to bring in the herd. This is pure and simple intimidation politics.
Confronting the supreme court in the state of the union speech is part of the same attack politics.

On an issue by issue basis, the Democratic party is now to the right of the average American. (Even if they have been trained to view “liberal” as a dirty word, just line up the public opinion stats on war, health care, and most issues across the board.) That puts it far to the right of the average rank-and-file Democrat, and to a liberal Democrat, the party leadership honestly look like rabid right wingers.
The only liberal agenda the Democrats in Washington are putting forward is the one in Glen Beck’s fever dreams.
So there’s something rather reasonable to what Emanuel said. Liberal Democrats could well be described as pathologically unintelligent (is that PC enough for ya?) because they are still Democrats.

Who made Tim Shriver the official designated apologee? Apologize to ALL of us with mentally handicapped family members, Rahm. Apologize to our family members.

why hasn’t Obama fired this guy yet? If he’d used the “N” word, he’d have been out the door yesterday.
Vote these clowns out!

There is a typo in this story. Please fix Shriver and four otheR advocates

This is ridiculous. The people who Rahm needs to apologize to are those who elected Obama into power in the first place and who demand he actually follow through on what was promised in the campaign. Case in point? The public option. Rahm is crazy to think progressives can’t or won’t root out gutless conservative Democrats who refuse to fight for their values.
So, half baked Sarah got this one half right. Kudos!

This is off topic but in reference to the last comment, I’m curious what percentage of the population are progressives. I know it’s not large and I don’t understand why they think their policies should take priority over the opinion of the majority of Americans.

We can all get outraged at Emanuel & Palin. Emanuel for using the r-word. Palin for making this politicial. It is not politicial. It is a word that should be used whether you are in the White House or not. I ask that everyone go to http://www.r-word.org and pledge your support whether you are a Republican or Democrat.

—The Special Olympics is DISPUTING the White House claim that its chairman, Tim Shriver, accepted Rahm Emanuel’s apology for calling liberals “retarded.”
Seeking to damp down the controversy over Rahm Emanuel’s reported, months-old use of the word, a White House official yesterday told me and other reporters that Emanuel had called Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver to apologize.
“The apology was accepted,” the official said yesterday.
The vice president for communications at the Special Olympics, Kirsten Seckler, told me that this account of the conversation is “INACCURATE.”
“TIM DIDN’T ACCEPT HIS APOLOGY,” she said. “Tim can’t do that. He can’t accept an apology on behalf of all people with disabilities.”
Shriver had simply said, she said, that he was willing to continue the conversation with the chief of staff.—(Politico)
The lesson as always, is that Liberals LIE.

wow,
Hey. A certain amount of what would be considered progressive policies are in line with the opinion of most Americans.
I use the public option as an example, because in polls time and time again it is shown to be a very popular policy. It only becomes controversial when framed as a government take-over of Health Care. Heck, even Scott Brown and his supporters in MA approve of the policy in some capacity. A mandate for the American public to buy into private insurance companies without such a mechanism as the public option is a non starter for most progressives. The problem being Health Care reform suddenly becomes a bail out for the insurance companies and too many conservative Democrats seem to be okay with that. When liberal groups tried to pressure them into supporting the public option, etc. – Rahm through a fit, dropped the “R-bomb” on them and now he has to apologize to an organization as if it represents an entire type of people. Ridiculous. Either way, some progressive policies are in line with the majority of Americans and the same goes for some conservative policies.
Peace!

1. There is nothing wrong with using this word as a slur. People with mental disabilities can accurately be described as “retarded” because their development is, in fact, retarded. If reality is too harsh for them, they can go live in fantasy land.
2. What that punk Rahm should be apologizing for is not caring about the base of the democratic party and wooing the center. He calls liberals names? Whose center-leaning, totally uninspired leadership resulted in the throngs of Obama’s former supporters feeling unmotivated to vote in 2010? oh, right, him.

I am a special education teacher and daily I remind students that we don’t use the “r” word. Everything is retarded to middle schoolers. Everything. What’s for lunch, what assignment they are given, what their parents say, what I say. Everything. Breaking the use of retarded is going to take a serious shift and people understanding why it is wrong.

After watching the piece about “retarded” I would like to add my two cents. My son has an IQ of 66 which is considered by some retarded. He drove truck over the road for twent years. Then locally. He worked for a construction company. His last job before he became disabled was for a towing and repair business for the big rigs. It ain’t what ya got. It’s what ya do with it. I never told him he was retarded until he was 46. He still refuses to accept it and that is fine with me.

Websters dictionary……
1: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede
2 : to delay academic progress by failure to promote..
We all have periods of being retarded I think we are too politically correct. It has NOTHING to do with disabled people

Posted by: Paula | February 3, 2010, 7:21 pm 7:21 pm

Paula, I couldn’t agree more.
Palin and the rest of the PC police need to get a clue.
The irony of course, is that Emanuel was at the meeting pushing for the approach to health care rather than the advanced one.

Obama belittled people with intellectual disabilities several months ago(remember the reference to bowling); now, Emmannuel has managed to insult them too. The world in which this administration lives is very small. Why on earth would the apology go to Timothy Shriver? He is a small representation of the millions of us that are ,or have as a family member, someone with an intellectual disability. We are seeking to change the term mentally retarded to intellectual disability because of the ignorance of society that uses the former term to mean stupid. All of us who actually know and love someone with an intellectual disability know that retarded is not stupid. Everyone does something stupid ocassionally and we can see that Obama and his cohort have been very ignorant and yes, stupid when they belittle people that they are supposed to be representing. The most discriminated group of people are those with intellectual/developmetal disabilities. Often they are not recognized as a person first but are seen as a disability. Respecting all people and recognizing individual worth
is what makes a society great.

After almost 40 years, and all the labels put on my daughter, I find retarded the most offensive.I often hear people joking calling another “retarded” They think this is funny,it is not. Do you think a parent of a handicapped child think’s it funny to hear children or adults calling each other retards? We as parents struggle to hekp our chldren be accepted by others. Our children, like yours just want to be loved and respond with unconditional love. I have watched other children stop and stare and my daughter speaking to them without any response from them. Maybe if Rahm had a Maybe if Rahm spent a day or so with parents of ahandicapped child he would think twice before opening his mouth. I invite him to contact me and come and see how I now watch my child live in a group home and the everyday situation we endure.Just because our children age they are still children and we watch others take care of them and watch they dont mistreat them, our jobs as parents of handicapped people dont end at the end of any day as long as they live and these rotten remarks are not appreciated.A phony apology, only because he was caught.Shame on you Rahm.

Interesting that Emanuel has not apologized to Liberal Democrats.
I guess we Liberal Democrats could be considered slow. We worked to get Obama elected and got no change and no hope. Meanwhile his staff treats us as a joke. It is clear that there is no place for progressives in the Democratic Party.
We finally have learned: So, Obama: don’t count on us in 2012.
A Republican might get elected, but at least they do as expected when they rob the American People.
Democrat Politicians are posers: Republican “I’ve got mine” politicians who claim they want change. So Republican, Democrat, NO DIFFERENCE. They both rip us off. They both consider us a joke. “The groundlings are grumbling. Who cares? Make them a promise and they will go away.”
Yes, we will go away in 2012. And may both Parties rot.
