Carly Fiorina’s ‘Demon Sheep’ Talks to ABC
ABC News' Teddy Davis reports:
Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO who wants to be the Republican nominee against Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., launched a Web video on Wednesday attacking fellow Republican Tom Campbell for backing higher taxes in California to balance the state's budget.
Given the aversion that most Republican primary voters have to raising taxes, the attack was sensible enough.
The only problem was that Fiorina's web video was so strange in its production value, narration, and choice of metaphor that it got mocked in the blogosphere and it is now Campbell's web-savvy campaign that is attempting to use the ad to raise money for his Senate run.
Watch the web video here:
"Carly's ad likens fiscal conservatives to sheep, and Tom to a demon sheep, without mentioning a single federal issue or proposing a single solution to America's economic woes. Seriously," writes the Campbell campaign's e-mail to supporters.
Fiorina is worried about Campbell because ever since he switched last month from the governor's race to the Senate race, he has been leading the GOP primary field.
Campbell, a law professor and former congressman who earned his Ph.D. under Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago, has a strong Libertarian streak: he backs abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
In a recent telephone interview with ABC News, he called for instituting an "essentially revenue neutral" carbon tax which would be offset by cutting payroll taxes. Sharing the viewpoint of many other economists, Campbell believes a carbon tax would be a less intrusive way to combat global warming than the cap-and-trade legislation that Boxer has championed in the Senate.
"I thought that the danger to the United States economy from what she proposed was extreme," said Campbell, referring to Boxer.
While most Republicans and even some Democrats are weary of cap-and-trade legislation, Campbell is taking the unusual step during a campaign of offering an alternative which includes a new "essentially revenue neutral" tax.
"Weaning ourselves off imported oil is essential," Campbell told ABC News. "The best way to do that is to lower the taxes, and I've got a specific one in particular, lower the FICA tax. In a recession, you want to make it cheaper for employers to employ people. So maybe you can forgive the FICA tax for a year. But lower the taxes. It's important that you start with that."
"Then impose a carbon-based tax on the use of carbon-based fuels in two ways — in energy production and in the price of an automobile," he added. "Those are both consumption taxes. What you've done then is essentially revenue neutral — substituted a consumption tax on carbon content by lowering an employment tax. The economics are wonderful. You incentivize hiring people and you incentivize the substitution away from depletable fossil fuels."
"And the supervision is zero," Campbell continued. "It's almost zero because you already have an IRS. You don't need to monitor the smoke stacks."
Beyond the tax issue, Campbell is also being attacked for his previous stance on illegal drugs.
On Dec. 9, 1999, when Campbell was running for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Dianne Feinstein, the Los Angeles Times reported that Campbell favored letting localities engage in the experimental government distribution of illegal drugs to combat crime.
Citing what he described as a successful heroin distribution program in Belgium, Campbell said that a study there found the effort not only reduced crime but lowered the rate of drug addiction.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Campbell said: "If you take the addicted population, and that is very hard to fake let alone desirable to fake, and offer them the drug to which they are addicted . . . that has the possibility of very beneficial results."
Campbell no longer touts the drug distribution idea and despite his comments to the Los Angeles Times, he bristles at the suggestion, floated by Fiorina recently, that he favors drug legalization.
"I never called for legalization of any drugs. Period," Campbell told ABC News. "My opponents are attempting to put the issue forward. That's not the case. It's simply not true. I was and am supportive of medical use of marijuana in the state of California, and that is, of course, supported by the vast majority of Californians."
Asked if he favored any other policy change in the area of drugs other than medicinal marijuana, Campbell said, "No. Nope."
The third Republican candidate in the Senate race is Assembly member Chuck DeVore, a more conventional, down-the-line conservative who has been backed by the Political Action Committee of Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.
Asked how he expects to win the Republican nomination despite having called for higher taxes at the state level, a new "essentially revenue neutral" carbon-tax at the federal level, and being supportive of same-sex marriage and abortion rights, Campbell pointed to his tough-on-spending record.
"I have been more specific than any candidate on how to solve the budget deficit problem, on how to curb the rate of growth of the federal government which is precisely what the TEA Party movement is focusing on," said Campbell. "Putting yourself in their shoes: 'Do you want to replace one of the biggest spenders in the United States Congress's history . . . with a focus on the fiscal issues? Or do you want to bring back the social issues. I hear nobody saying, 'Yes, let's make this a fight over the social issues.'"

Santorum: Money Will Not Defeat Obama, Ideas Will
Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
Thank goodness we don’t live in California any longer!
What passes for “conservative” in that cesspool will never cease to amaze me.
Supporting abortion rights and same-sex marriage at the federal level is most definitely NOT a “strong Libertarian streak.” A Libertarian would demand that the federal government keep its nose out of such matters as they are the purview of the states.
The fact that he “bristles” at the insinuation that he favors drug legalization also indicates lack of “libertarian” qualifications.
It’s no secret, the drug war was doomed from the beginning. But a simple look at the history of prohibition would have told you that. It’s time to pull the plug on that miserable failure, close down the alphabet agencies sucking up our tax dollars in the futile attempt to curb drug use…and make these folks find honest employment in the private sector.
Like every other form of government intrusion, drug prohibition does nothing but line the pockets of politicians, increase the price of drugs (that people will use anyway), increase crime, increase the profit margins of the large distributors, fund the tyrannical regimes in the countries of origin…and [most importantly] bring that tyranny home to our borders, where any two-bit thug with a gun and a fedgov clown suit can destroy someone’s life on a whim.

Tom Campbell is a career politician and a RINO to the bone. I don’t know Fiorina but I’ll vote for her with my fingers crossed. Bottom line for Californians is that anyone would be preferable to the Senate’s dumbest member, Barbara Boxer.

And to Ron Jones, we can only say “Thanks”…..Thanks for leaving California.
Bottom Line….No Republican running will be able to defeat Barbara Boxer because she’s is known to be one of the Senate’s smartest members and she’s honest, almost to a fault.

So Republicans in California have to choose between a wolf in sheeps clothing or someone who drove HP into the ground. Wow, sounds like a fun race.
And good thing this is in California, otherwise I bet the DEA would be making a stop at Fiona’s campaign office if they think that this kind of ad would convince people to vote for her.

Barry O. all Californians do not share your view of the extremely liberal and pompous Ms. Boxer. I’m hopeful we are ready for some change. I know I am.

This is the most ridiculous ad I’ve ever seen. If this is what Carly spends her time on and approves, maybe she should have been canned from HP even sooner than she was. Just terrible

This has got to be one of most ridiculous, disjointed and schizophrenic political commercials I’ve even seen. Who ever produced the flimsy flash animation and wrote the script for this should be sent back to Advertising 101 for coming up with a message that doesn’t scare and worst of all, doesn’t connect or make sense! It’s as if Salvador Dali wrote this! On the other hand, Carly Fiorina was the former CEO of HP, and literally drove the computer company into the ground before she was forced out by the HP board. She was voted by Conde Nast Publications as one of the 20 WORST CEOS ever. And she has the guts and daring to run for Senate after proving her failure as a CEO? If she actually gets voted into office, it’s damn time to move out of California, folks.

Considering what she did at HP and then how she helped advise McCain on his ecoomic platform during the disaterous 2008 meltdown…maybe she is not the wisest of choices for CA.

This ad is a success for Fiorina of it distrcats people form her own dismal record of incompetence and failure.
Please focus on the issues of her FAILURE at HP, where she cost stockholders 60% of their stock value, eliminated 18,000 American jobs, and then took a $21 million BONUS when she was fired by the HP board.
Read what HP employees have to say about Carly’s incompetence at <a href="http://####

I live in California and will be paying close attention the candidates that are running for election in November. I don’t know much about Carly Fiorina but I did catch an interview with her on the radio today and the show hosts got Chuck DeVore on the phone (who called her out on her position the stimulus bills and challeged her to a debate). She claims to be a fiscal conserative and willing to work for the people but I still need to do a little more research before I vote for her. On the other hand, even if she is a total ditz at least it’s not Barbara Boxer who seems to think she and her political cronies know whats best for Californians. I was born and raised in SoCal and there was a time when this state was one the best places in the Nation to live and work. Nearly perfect weahter year round, great beaches, mountains within an hour’s drive. Except for the occassional earthquake–but you get used to them (especially the small ones). Then the Democrats got ahold the state and started implementing alot of “feel good” and “nanny” legislation that has squeezed the life out of taxpaying residents paychecks–from every direction. Now we have freeways that are falling apart, along with city streets, sanctuary cities where federal immigration law is ignored (and some are violent felons), welfare for everyone, overpaid and spoiled government workers and the list goes on. This new idea that is being tossed around about a personal carbon based tax is just another way to dig in my pocket for more money (that will be wasted on more pork) everytime I turn on my heat, cook a meal, turn on light bulb. No thank you, and I say out with Barbara Boxer. She helped to ruin California as far as I am concerned. But I will be careful to not just vote for any candidate–not this time–not after voting Democrat the last two times and getting nothing but the bill for it. I will sit out the election if need be if there is no suitable candidate and hope the next election cycle produces a decent human being whose knows when to stop the madness.

rightsideofmymind – I’m not saying the democrats were blameless – because they are politicians. However, do you suppose the fact that you’re a true democracy there might play into this as well? You’re the only state where voters vote so much on each issue, and yet you also voted to never raise your own taxes again? So, if you keep adding things, and yet never raise taxes, won’t you eventually get to this point?
If you guys are so bad off you’d put Carly in you almost deserve what you get. Why would ANYBODY vote for a woman that was awarded the title of one of the ten worst ever CEO’s? She destroyed that company, but people honestly think she’d be great at this job?
You should run. You sound smart.

I forgot. I watched this ad two nights ago and I’ve laughed about it since. It has to be the craziest ad ever.

What was that??? Soooooo glad I don’t live in CA…….Carly fire whoever ok’d that for you!

Yes, we should drop the social issues and talk about the economic issues. Mr. Campbell, why do you want to impose a carbon tax on the population? Why did you increase taxes and spending in previous years? These are not fiscally conservative positions. Neither is redistribution of taxpayer wealth in the form of free heroin to addicts. It’s a little bit too late to cite the Tea Party and throw around some budget ideas and pretend you are a fiscal conservative. Your record speaks for you.

This woman is an anti American witch and all her opponent has to do is play is her famous line that ‘there is no god given right for Americans to have jobs’, this she said as she moved thousands of jobs overseas and we now have severe job shortages here. This woman is a first class jerk and we need to outsource her to China, she would fit in just fine with their government.

The true Conservative in this race is CHUCK DEVORE. Don’t support Carly unless you want Arnold2. She supports Obamacare for starters.
Devore has a proven track record of fiscal conservatism in the State Senate. He stood firm against the new tax increase even when he was only one of three Republicans to hold out.
