I’ve had lunch with my 6 year old for the past two weeks in school and have been so disappointed that our children have a lunch period of 30 min. The 30 min begins when the bell rings, then stand in line to receive their meal, sit and open their beverage, eat and go outside to play. My daughter is not an unhealthy eater but she has recently been diagnosed as acid reflux, gastritis, and a hernia. I believe the rushed meals have something to do with it. Please review, not only the lunch menus but the time given to eat. I see the kids throw so much food because they are rushed and don’t get to finish their meal. Deserts are usually the last thing they eat and that’s where the fresh fruit comes in. They throw that away because of lack of time they have to eat it. I believe poor eating habits begin when they start school. I live in South Texas and we have many over weight children. WE need a total review of our meal system. Hope it happens soon.

AGza–
You are right. It is a problem. But George Stephanopoulos doesn’t need to do a news story to solve it. Set up a meeting with your principal, talk to your schools PTO/PTA. The solution can be made at the school or district level. In fact, it is more likely to be made there, and sooner, and in a way that actually addresses local conditions. It doesn’t need to come from the top down, as a federal or state policy. That will just take to long if ever, and then not apply to your schools needs. There are roles for higher forms of gov’t, but this is not one. Plus, it will empower you and the other parents to remember who has the responsibility – you do! Let Rick Perry do other stuff!

I believe Mrs. Obama is doing the right thing to try to have good food for the children at school. However, I have worked lunchrooms many times and have witnessed children throwing away good food and eating only the sweets. A lot has to do with what you put into the lunch boxes. Maybe, also as the previous person said…they need more time especially if they have to stand on line. We cannot expect the schools to do all when we as parents, are not helping out. It is something we need to do together.

Wait a minute…how did these “comments” end up on this posting site? I was going to mention “Colbert’s excellent comments on Palin” from the other night but maybe isn’t the right forum???
