First Lady Michelle Obama Promotes $400 Million Initiative to Increase Access to Healthy, Affordable Food Nationwide

ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: First Lady Michelle Obama took her childhood obesity initiative on the road today and visited a new grocery store in an impoverished area of Philadelphia to shine a spotlight on the need for affordable healthy food options across the nation. Today the Obama Administration announced it will put $400 million toward its “Healthy Food Financing Initiative,” which aims to bring grocery stores and healthy food retailers to underserved urban and rural communities across the nation. Increasing access to healthy foods is one of four key areas that the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative, which she unveiled earlier this month. The other elements include helping parents make healthy eating and lifestyle choices for their families; serving healthier food in schools; and increasing physical activity among the nation’s youth. The First Lady was joined in Philadelphia today by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The Healthy Food Financing Initiative is a joint effort by the Treasury, Agriculture and Health and Human Services Departments. Mrs. Obama said that these underserved communities, sometimes called “food deserts” for their lack of healthy affordable food, are often found in poor areas. As a result parents have no options to buy healthy food and often resort to convenience stores or gas stations. The administration’s initiative will try to leverage investments to expand healthy food options into as many as one-fifth of the nation’s food deserts. The administration projects this initiative will also create thousands of jobs in urban and rural communities. Mrs. Obama said that the Agriculture Department estimates that 23.5 million people, including 6.5 million children, live in low-income areas where the closest grocery store is more than a mile away. The First Lady visited such a neighborhood in North Philadelphia that has been transformed by the addition of a new supermarket, the Fresh Grocer. The $15 million store opened last December through development by the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative that aims to increase the number of grocery stores in underserved communities across the Keystone State At the Fresh Grocer, Mrs. Obama greeted customers and store workers before ordering herself a strawberry-banana smoothie. “I have my own money,” she said before procuring a $20 bill. Mrs. Obama used the Fresh Grocer as an example of how investing in healthy foods can have a significant impact on a local community, not just in terms of improving health but also creating jobs and boosting the local economy. The store is located in a high poverty area of Philadelphia and the First Lady said today that the neighborhood had not had a grocery store in 10 years.  “That means if a mom wanted to buy a head of lettuce to make a salad in this community or have some fresh fruit for their kids lunch, that means she would have to get on a bus, navigate public transportation with big bags of groceries, probably more than one time a week or worse pay for a taxi cab to get to another supermarket in another community just to feed her kids,” she said. Since 2004, the Fresh Food Financing Initiative, working with the state of Pennsylvania and two Philadelphia-based nonprofits  (the Reinvestment Fund and the Food Trust) have spent $120 million to build 80 grocery stores across the state. Mrs. Obama said that the success that Pennsylvania has had in increasing healthy food options can be replicated across the nation. -Karen Travers

Right on Michelle. Where we live plays a critical role in shaping our health status. As a nation, if we want to cut back on diabetes, obesity, + rising health care costs, we need to educate people and provide access to healthy foods.

Michelle only gets $400m?
Her husband handed out $1.5B today.
They loved spending our money.

SHE said in the interview here SHE WANTED TO GET INFORMATION ON PARENTS when talking about her fight for Obesity.
What kind of parents’ infomation does she need …
After reading NEWSWEEK’S magazine on GLENN BECK, I started to watch the Glenn Beck SHOW. His show is very convincing and provides very good information, not the unchecked ones, the biased ones, the unfair ones …
I watch his show every night now. I didn’t know who he was a year ago.
Sorry, WH. Glenn Beck is not a crazy guy as you painted him to be.

I can see it coming.
MO will hand out money incentives to families that lose weight.
It will be another entitlement program
that enslaves the poor.

It seems that the government should be able to buy and distribute a lot of vegetable seeds for $400M. There is nothing more “natural” than homegrown vegetables! They could probably build a few hot houses as well.

Great idea to grow your own vegetables. You may recall our First Lady also has been encouraging people to plant gardens.
Unfortunately, not all the people who live in poor urban areas have space to grow their food, and without a grocery store nearby that provides fresh fruit and vegetables, the nearest options are a constant diet of fat killer fast food.

Every single of our Presidents in history has had the capability of implementing ‘some’ programs that they feel will help out the underprivileged, (i.e. No child left behind, DARE, etc.) so at least the President is spending our tax $$ on programs that will directly help people and try to assist with issues that are greatly hurting our nation right now such as childhood obesity, foreclosure, etc. So get over it. So I am glad to see this $$ spent on good things, and not more tax cuts for the rich for God’s sake!

Democrats, quit spending taxpayer money!!!!!!! Quit expanding the debt!!!!!! Did Obama not just yesterday create a commission to investigate how the government can reduce the unsustainable debt? Well here’s a clue. Here’s a first step. Quit spending millions of dollars of citizens’ money.

Blake – let’s say the United States was attacked by a disease that that killed 800 people every day. Would it be worth a government spending intervention?
That’s roughly how many people die from obesity per DAY – some 300,000 every year.

Bravo to our First Lady….rural and urban areas has been lacking even grocery stores that sells fresh fruits and veggies for Decades without any attention being paid to this national dilemna. Obesity brings around diseases that are “profit based” for insurance companies and their cronies. Children in America needs the opportunity and has a right to afford “good healthy foods”. Look around these areas and all you see is Fast Food joints….to kill off rural and urban citizens. This is America, and it’s about time this change. Or is America a Third world country that only the rich and affluent survives?

Food stamps won’t buy a lot of healthy food. So I guess Michelle will have to increase the amount of food stamps per family.
A horrid cycle that keeps the poor dependent on the Gov’t–and keeps them voting for Democrats.

Fran, maybe you can help me with a question. Why are conservatives so elitist? You know, apparently not caring whether the poorest among us actually have access to fresh food.

Want accessibility to food at a store.
Have a job and go to the grocery store.

It’s a very noble cause.
But couldn’t it wait until the economy gets better?
How exactly does this go along with Obama’s admonition that we need to tighten our belts?
Can we spare 400 million right now?

larry | Feb 19, 2010 7:55:23 PM posted “Food stamps won’t buy a lot of healthy food.” Larry, that statement perpetuates a TOTAL MYTH.
FOOD stamp cards can buy foods, seeds and food plants. People cannot use the cards for alcohol, tobacco, pet food, supplements, paper goods, or hot prepared foods.

If Mrs. Obama is serious about healthy foods, instead of just for photo-ops, she should ask Mr. Obama to close all the McDonalds, Burger Kings, Wendys, Jack in the Box, Taco Bells, tax every corner convenience store that carried sodas, chips, sweets, charge every company a fee for having parking space within 5 minute walk radius.

The better question is “can SPEND fast enough?” In a 2008 study, Americans who are 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight cost our nation country an estimated $147 billion in weight-related medical bills. That’s double the amount a decade ago.
Projections? Obesity health care costs will cost our nation $344 BILLION every YEAR.
Think of this $400 million as an investment to “cut costs”.

Michelle’s Let’s Move program has a $10B budget, so $400M is a drop in the bucket to the Democrats.
The MSM is hard at work promoting this.
But it probably won’t work until Obama declares it a crisis that must be addressed immediately or people will die!
Kind of like Obamacare.
So dire that it doesn’t start until 2014.
Sadly people believe this snakeoil nonsense.

I wonder what the author meant by these words?
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s great civilizations has been two hundred years.
It seems we are well down the road… I wonder what dictatorship will feel like….

If there’s a choice between fresh produce and junk food, the junk food will win out. Good luck trying to change the mindset in poor neighborhoods. You’d better try teaching them to cook rather than eat processed foods while you’re at it.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) this is not a “Black” problem — it is a problem of all peoples whose primary source of sustenance is Government assistance. Check out the state of poor whites in Oklahoma, American Indians anywhere, and any of the US Territories in the Pacific.
Government largess = societal dysfunction.

Let’s see, growing up I lived about 20 miles from the nearest grocery store. Now almost 60 years later, I am still 20 miles from the nearest grocery store. There are many Amish in my area and thus to get groceries they must make arrangements with those that drive. See how this works? Do you think the Amish are wealthy, and if so how did they get that way? Yup, they saved what money they earned and cobbled it together to build houses, barns, and to survive.
There is an old saying out here in the farm which is. “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”. Actually it is a very true statement.
I applaud Michelle’s attempt to trim the bulge, but wishing and hoping that the children of overweight adults will choose fresh veggies, is hoping on a star.
As long as there is dinner in a box, lunch in a bag, and breakfast in the frozen section of the grocery store, coupled with a very lazy society, the waistline will continue to expand.

Having mandatory PE in K-12 would go a long way towards promoting healthy behavior in kids. It would help classroom behavior too.

Lets stop beating around the bush and tell it like it is: Grocery stores invest in areas where there are paying customers. They don’t invest in places where the cost of doing business will exceed the money brought in. There are reasons nobody wants to discuss as to why businessmen will not invest in low income areas. But again we have a socialist thinking President and his like minded wife “steering the ship”. Another waste of hard earned tax money. And so it goes.

“Another waste of hard earned tax money”
The money is going to be wasted one way or another. Why do you think cancer treatment centers can afford the highest priced advertising spots on TV? Because people are getting rich off of people getting sick; and one of the reasons they get sick is from eating over processed junk food. Money invested in prevention instead of cure is money well spent.

Yes.
I wish this post went into more detail about how these investments work. Do the stores operate at a loss? Do they remain subsidized to stay in business? Or do they become profitable once they are in business?

Posted by: MayBee | February 20, 2010, 10:13 am 10:13 am

The sum of one’s diet is their food culture. This is nothing about food stores in low income neighborhoods. It is about an impoverished food culture — an unintended consequence of the welfare state.

There is more information at Article Ant in a release dated the 19th.
