First Lady Michelle Obama Says ‘Let’s Move’ to Fight Childhood Obesity, Encourage Healthy Living
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: First lady Michelle Obama today kicked off her new initiative aimed at solving childhood obesity, called “Let’s Move,” and said now is the time to aggressively tackle this problem. “Instead of just worrying and wringing our hands about it, let’s do something about it. Let’s act… let’s move. Let’s get this done,” she said. According to the White House, over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in the United States have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The new Obama administration initiative centers around four key areas: helping parents make healthy eating and lifestyle choices for their families; serving healthier food in schools; increasing access to healthy and affordable food and increasing physical activity among the nation’s youth. Mrs. Obama said this is not about the government telling people what to do and that experts she has talked to about this issue do not believe that is the right way to go. “Instead, I’m talking about what we can do,” she said. “I’m talking about commonsense steps we can take in our families and communities to help our kids lead active, healthy lives.” The Obama administration has set up a website – LetsMove.gov – that will provide tips and strategies for parents to bring healthy eating habits to their families, encourage their kids to exercise more and track their progress. Mrs. Obama also unveiled a new tracking system the government has set up that tracks diabetes and obesity rates across the nation and highlights areas that she deemed “food deserts” – communities without a supermarket and access to fresh, healthy food. The first lady said that for the critics who say this should not be a priority in tough economic times because school budgets are already stretched thin, “They might ask, ‘How can we spend money on fruits and vegetables in our school cafeterias when many of our schools don’t have enough textbooks or teachers?’” she said. “Or they might ask, ‘How can we afford to build parks and sidewalks when we can’t even afford our health care costs?’” Mrs. Obama said these are “false choices” and it’s not a matter of either or. “If kids aren’t getting adequate nutrition, even the best textbooks and teachers in the world won’t help them learn,” she said. “If they don’t have safe places to run and play, and they wind up with obesity-related conditions, then those health care costs will just keep rising.” The first lady noted that times have changed since she was growing up – kids walked to school, had regular school recess and gym classes and played outside. “You didn’t go inside until dinner was ready – and when it was, we would gather around the table for dinner as a family. And there was one simple rule: you ate what Mom fixed – good, bad, or ugly. Kids had absolutely no say in what they felt like eating,” she said. Mrs. Obama noted that dessert and fast food used to be a treat and should continue to be in order to instill in American kids good habits and moderation. “No matter how much they beg for pizza, fries and candy, ultimately, they are not, and should not, be the ones calling the shots at dinnertime,” she said. “We’re in charge. We make these decisions.” But that doesn’t mean that treats are completely off limits, the first lady said. “There’s a place for cookies and ice cream, burgers and fries – that’s part of the fun of childhood.” — Karen Travers

Our children have become sedentary. Prefering to sit and play video games and watch TV to physical activity. This started years ago when PE was cut from many schools. Basically children need to get off the couch and get moving!!

“If kids aren’t getting adequate nutrition, even the best textbooks and teachers in the world won’t help them learn,”
==========
That’s true to an extent, but “adequate” nutrition is a far cry from having expensive fresh fruits and vegetables in the schools.
I don’t know if Mrs. Obama brought her lunch to school when she was a girl, but I am willing to bet that the food her cafeteria served back then was pretty cheap, un-fresh, and fatty. Yet childhood obesity wasn’t the problem it is now.
When it comes to costs, it isn’t a false choice. We have to be smart about how schools spend their money.

I love the way this administration is unrelentingly positive in the face of all the sulking and negativity from the Republicans.

As I have stated many times.. if you want equality in this country.. a good place to start would be the people under 16 years of age.. they are treated without regard to individual rights and have the highest poverty rates.. they are abused and ignored..

we could start with tort reform and therefore allow more activity in schools and elsewhere. Public parks, summer camps, boyscout camps, parks, school yards, coaches, etc should be able to let kids run, play tag, play sports, hike, camp, and be active without the threat of shysters waiting in the wings just waiting for a greedy parent to sue because someone got hurt.
We also, but this should be locally controlled, bring back mandatory gym class and make upper school kids play at least one sport.
Also we could have a tax-deduction for costs (limited) for children sports fees, equipment, and transport costs since that can be expensive.
Lastly, we should encourage children to walk or ride bikes to school. Some school districts won’t allow this due to liability. Other reasons include the news/government scare mongering of child-molesters waiting on every corner. Maybe a few more crossing-guards, encouraging children to walk together (or with parents), and a few more drive-bys from cops will encourage this basic thing which would help more than Obama’s millions.

Thank You, First Lady. Finally a worth while issue being address in our OWN country….OUR Children and their Health! Impressed!

Ed- you are right, liability is a huge problem. I used to teach some children’s tumbling classes, and to get certified I had to learn all about liability.
As for this:
===Also we could have a tax-deduction for costs (limited) for children sports fees, equipment, and transport costs since that can be expensive.===
While I think that’s a good idea, I’m not sure if it is workable. However, it does highlight the fact that the tax exemption for children is laughably small. If families kept more money (and not just more money for childcare, as President Obama proposes), they could more easily afford sports activities.

Government has better things to do than manage people’s weights. Ugly Duckling Michelle as well as Usurpder Baracky should cease managing people’s lives. Parents are usually well aware of what their children eat and their girths without meddling menaces like those two.

This is all about control. I believe in children being active and eating healthy. I also believe in government staying out of my private business. Also, the animals we use for food are given too many hormones and they could be passed on to us causing some people to gain weight. Didn’t Hitler try some ‘control’ programs about what people ate etc.too? Wake up America! And I love how Michelle, (who could by the way lose some weight off her derrier)says, “Barack will never let you go back to your old ways”. So now Barack is the food & exercize policeman? Will he have food watch dogs in cafeterias & restaurants to make sure we don’t eat too much. Barack could use a few extra pounds IMO. These two think they can control everything we do? Lots of luck.

A good starting point would be with the Food Stamp program. Is there not any control over what foods can be bought with Food Stamps. I have seen many people on Food Stamps buying nothing but processed foods. Their baskets are full of frozen pizza, chips, sodas and even candy. Is this allowable?

The kids in my neighborhood walk & ride bikes to school & take their own lunches. While there is obviously a concern for kids who are not getting enough exercize or eating healthier, I think the Obamas would be better to focus on kids who aren’t getting enough to eat. Or kids who are anorexic &/or bulemic. The world is full of hungry people & they’re worried about the over weight ones. A little cockeyed in their thinking. Or how about worrying about teen suicide rates. But then I guess the fat kids will cost the system more money.

I hope MO will get rid of some of her huge staff to pay for this interfering program….

I don’t think the adminstration is trying to control America, I think they are trying to help!! Why do we fight something that’s good and positive, there are a lot of peole out there this is going to help. Me and family for starters. Already, instead of giving my 13 yr old son sweet cookies and cupcakes for snakes he’s getting fruit, I put a fruit bowl on the table and it’s working and also very pretty! Trying to get him to eat veggies is a little tough. Maybe he won’t end up with all these lifte threatening disease that going around.
