FLOTUS: Childhood Obesity is “Imminently Solvable”

From Sunlen Miller:

Gearing up for the formal roll-out of her childhood obesity initiative next week, First Lady Michelle Obama met this afternoon with six members of Congress and Cabinet Secretaries in the Old Family Dining Room in the White House.

Calling the problem of childhood obesity “imminently solvable,” the first lady said that it will take efforts across the nation to remedy the problem.

“This challenge is that this problem is imminently solvable, and that's the good news.  But it's going to require us working together — not just the administration, but Congress, governors, mayors, parents, teachers.  Anyone who has access to children in their lives is going to have to work together.”

The first lady said the bipartisan effort is going to require just a single federal solution, but require “national action.”

Mrs. Obama said the effort would focus on four areas: increasing the number of healthy schools, increasing the level of physical activity in children’s lives, improving the accessibility of healthy food options and empowering consumers to make good food choices.

Members of Congress present at the meeting today with the first lady were Senate Agriculture Chair Blanche Lincoln, D-AR, and ranking member Saxby Chambliss, R-GA; Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Chair Harkin, D-IA, and ranking member Mike Enzi, R-WY; House Education and Labor Chair George Miller, D-CA, and House Agriculture Chair Collin Peterson, D-MN.

“We’ve got a health crisis,” HHS Secretary Sebelius said sighting statistics that 1 in 3 children are obese, “the trend is growing more alarming by the day. So the first lady is focus on an effort and really wants to bring partners together.”

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said this issue, “is one we can all rally behind,”  to work collectively among agencies, and with the private sector.

Next Tuesday the first lady will formally unveil the specifics of her plan.

Uh Oh…Will there be fines for eating cheese or taxes on fried baloney sandwiches? Maybe tax credits for eating turnips, cabbage or tofu roast beef?

I can only imagine how many hearings
there will be, the bloated bureaucracy
this will set up and the money spent
on what we already know. You eat more
than you should of fatty foods and not
excercise, you will be and stay fat.
Just like we know you can get cancer from smoking but people still buy
cigarettes. Ok, we don’t need the
federal government involved in this.
The only thing that will happen is
that government will get fatter and
more bloated than it already is.

More power to her. I’m all for kids being healthier and providing healthier options in schools. Providing that they are indeed options and not regulations or fineable offenses, or removal of other options to make a “choice” compulsory.

Hey Obamacrat, we are talking about children’s health here NOT politics. No one is taking away anybody’s freedom!

In MO’s case, she did it by having her private chef, her family’s personal chef provide healthy meals. That is NOT really the case for the rest of us moral souls who are not fortunate enough to make enough money to be able to afford someone to cook our meals for us. (And yes, this was while they were in chicago. The guy is now with them in DC.)

“Empowering consumers to make good food choices”? That’s baloney (low-fat, low-salt, of course). Every time we walk into a grocery store we make our choices. Leave us what little freedom we still have.

Bad health and obesity costs us more money and more taxes in the long run. If you people want to have social security, then your kids have to stay healty long enough to work to support you. I support Mrs. Obama for caring for our kids and their futures unlike the last administration.

I’m sorry, but i think its a really good thing, the president is trying to save out children and future children from being fat forever. I don’t know about you but when i was in 8th grade i used to throw out my disgusting fruit and then when the classes were changing go buy 2 snickers and pop everyday, i didn’t know any better.
Its choices, I’m saying, do we want to be the country with the fatest people? really think about it. We need a change, maybe the goverment will lower the cost for healthy food, for us poor people.

All this taking away freedom crap should really stop!! Whats wrong with informing individuals who are in the dark on nutrition/stats, etc. I have educated children for the last 13 years and they are getting bigger and bigger.(2nd grader @ 150lbs.) a 5y.o. @ 125lbs. Why?? The Initiative is an excellent idea. Just put up or shut up!! I’m on board for a healthier future for the up and coming generation.
