Former Dem Governor Douglas Wilder: Democrats ‘Whistling by Their Graveyard’; Time for White House Political Shake-Up
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, D-Va., was an early supporter of President Obama — and something of a trailblazer for him, as the nation’s first elected African-American governor. Now, the 79-year-old Wilder is leading efforts to sound alarm bells about the state of the Democratic Party. On ABC’s “Top Line” today, Wilder told us that the Obama White House still seems not to get how toxic the political environment is this year — or how drastic the steps that need to be taken to change that are. “I think the problem that we have is that some people have been whistling by their graveyard, as if nothing is going on — ‘Well, everything is fine,’ ” Wilder, who served as Virginia’s governor from 1990-1994, told me and ABC’s Jonathan Karl. “And they keep talking about the president’s personal popularity. And we see in recent polls coming out in the last several days to show that that might not be the case. And so I think it’s anybody’s guess as to how bad it could be in terms of the House being taken over, in terms of the Senate even now.” Wilder last week called for DNC Chairman Tim Kaine — a fellow former Virginia governor — to leave his post in the wake of a string of electoral setbacks. He told us that, aside from replacing Kaine, the president needs to widen the circle of advisers he listens to. “Why the people around the president — if they’re advising him to stick with health care, stay with health care, give the kinds of monies for the stimulus package that were given with no strings attached, and then to come back and say ‘well, we’re going to get on jobs,’ – but when?” Wilder said. “And the confidence of the American people is dwindling on a steady basis.” He continued: “Do you need to listen to other people? Do you need to reach out to other people who’ve had some experience in governing, rather than getting elected? He had the most brilliant team to assemble to get him elected. The question is: are these people capable of governance?” Said Wilder: “I know that most of the American people want to see him do well. But you can’t do well the way you have been continuing. You’ve got to stop that and get a different direction.” On Sen.Evan Bayh’s surprise decision to retire rather than seek another term in 2010, Wilder said: “Wow… For the Democrats to lose him it’s big, big, big!” Republicans, he said, are likely to make “substantial gains” in both the House and the Senate. Wilder also pointed out that, even if Democrats do retain control of the Senate, they’re likely to have a considerably narrower majority than the one that’s produced so much frustration this year: “Let’s assume this — if you can’t do it with 60 votes, and if you can’t do it with 59 votes, a single reduction will bring about a great deal of difficulty.” Watch our full discussion with Wilder HERE. We also chatted with Jonathan Krohn, the 14-year-old author of “Defining Conservatism: The Principles That Will Bring Our Country Back,” on “Top Line” today. It is the wasteful spending, that needs controlling, and the White House is ignoring it. Wasteful politicans need to go now and if the shoe fits hit the road. We need to stop spending and make cuts now,NOW. Not a year from now. If the Democrats will not do it then we have no choice but to replace them.

……stormerF2..”we” who? Where do you think the huge Deficits came from? Just a “hint”….. the following was Not Paid for by the last administration…2 Wars unpaid for, Medicare Advantage Program, and the Huge Tax Breaks for the uppercrust 2%. Please tell me where have you been. Are you talking about the 787 billion bailout? That was asked for by the last administration…(on their way out the door, as if the Financial Collapse of our nation ‘just had happened”) splitted between the last adminsistration and the current one. If the stimilus is the reason for your “we” thinking….Americans know that “we” couldn’t afford to go into another “great depression”….so maybe “we” should’ve been yelling for the past 9 years. Oh, but I forgot, “we” were distracted by the “Supermen”, alias “terrorist”, but not fighting them…instead invading Iraq that has created part of the “spending” you’re talking about. So, I’m not with the “we” nothing, because I’m not that “partisan” to believe that “spending” in the last year has created our nation’s financial dilemna.

sara: your talking points are incorrect and old and tiresome. your making excuses and whining are even uglier so when can we offically quit blaming bush? 2011, 2012 or ever? the fact is obamas spending will surpass bush’s total deficit of 8 years by next year.

When Taiwan and Switzerland realized they had health care systems that were going nowhere in the 1990′s, they set up commissions to study the world’s systems and use the best ideas. That kept the politics to a minimum. But the U.S. Congress apparently wanted to get it’s piece of the pie and make sure it was taking care of the special interests, so it handled health care directly we got a Rube-Goldberg pair of bills that intelligent people realized did little to slow down spiraling health costs. I’m disgusted with both parties here.

Stanley, I`m pretty sure that your numbers are incorrect. Almost all of the debt that Obama is carrying was inherited. That`s why he has to keep reminding the American people what Bush did. Between the tax cuts, the wars, the demographics of the population, the collapse of revenue due to the severe recession, the prescription drug bill, etc, and all the other Bush expenditures, we would be in a financial crisis even if Obama had not spent a dime. The stimulus bill probably kept us from falling into the abyss though Republicans will never admit it. I share your anger but I direct it at those more deserving…. and President Obama is not one of them.

Posted by: sara
That’s not what Obama told us! Obama wanted a larger stimulus after Bush passed TARP. BTW, Bush only released $350 Billion TARP and actually had Obama to agree to release the 2nd $350 Billion. The $787B was all Obama.

Posted by: musician
Wow, the TARP kept the banks up. The stimulus didn’t keep us from falling into the abyss, because we have only used approximately $250B according to the government web site. If we only needed $250B, then why ask for $787B? TARP propped up the banks and the stimulus has simply tried to create jobs and bolster highway funds and projects. Barney Franks and Obama were fighting about the $200 Billion left over from TARP funds which should have gone back towards our debt.

Good
lets the GOP win back the house- and even the Senate–what are their goals and aspirations? More of the same policies that drove the nations economy into a ditch?
Are more tax cuts to the rich and corporations going to help the vast majority of Americans?
The GOP has plans to cut medicare even further then the health care plan offered by the Senate Democrats.
Health care costs needs to be reformed and costs reduced- what does the GOP have for this?
Any gains the GOP makes this fall are likely to be a short term phenomenon-
Is the nation going to recover and prosper by the same policies that got us here?
Posted by: Peter | February 15, 2010, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm
Peter —- One thing the GOP wants is to bolster small business. Reid has effectively screwed up a bi-partisan jobs bill that MIGHT have helped. True recovery will start when small business gets the confidence that our government is not going to slam them with health care and cap and trade and consumer confidence/spending returns. Otherwise, pumping tax money into our system will prolong effects of a recession.

I personally wouldn’t vote for a republican even if you held a gun to my head. it was a republican president that created the environment for our near economic collapse. So you weren’t happy with ALMOST destroying our economy, you want to give them a second chance to finish the job? No thanks.
The most prolific myth in our countrys history is that republicans are fiscally conservative – it’s not based in fact or reality. Check the facts folks. Who was the last republican president to balance the budget? I’ll give you a hint, many if not most of the posters probably weren’t even alive then.
Posted by: JB | February 15, 2010, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm
We know what will happen if the republicans get control of both houses of congress. They are gonna work their behinds off. I mean they will work like we’ve never seen them work before. And then when the 2012 elections roll around they are going boast at how great they’ve been; how they have made the difference, not the democrats. Then the sheep of this country will say, “baa baa yes they have” and hince we’ll get a republican in the white house. Once that’s accomplished they will do the same old crap that every republican president has done before them. Tax breaks for the rich, more taxes for people who keep this country moving, propably another war, and shove religion in every faucet of our lives.

The democrats car is now skidding along the highway, it has no wheels and it’s losing it’s engine. If they would go to the center of the road they may pickup some grease to skid a little easier.

stanely: Sure we can stop blaming bush.. but it has only been a year and I don’t know how you can blame this mess on obama. He came in inheriting a huge deficit two wars a financial collapse and a minority party who is not interested in doing anything but saying no and watching themselves on fox news. I dont like government spending either but if we make it out of this recession save gm end these wars and get some sort of heath care done you better shut your mouth and open your mind to logic and reason. The only way to get out of a recession is to spend says every economist smarter than you or I. You just keep on being ignorant because it serves you political agenda of getting the black guy out of the white house. I am so glad to have that fool out of the white house. We have a hard working man in there now not spending every weekend at his ranch in crawford texas the time for redneck rule is over get used to it.

No, it’s not tiresome. Obama inherited a $1.2 trillion deficit the moment he raised his hand to take the oath.
Most federal spending is mandated by law. For Bush’s last budget (09): Social Security ($662 bil.), Medicare $425b), Medicaid ($259), TARP ($247b), Other Mandatory Programs ($673b), Interest on Debt ($148b). Total: $2,414b.
Discretionary Programs: Defense ($697b), Other ($609b). Total: $1,307).
Great Recession cost around $400 billion in lost revenues, increased costs (unemployment, safety net stuff).
For 2010, the U.S. government collected $15.4% of GDP to pay for government, spent 27.7%. Most went out as payments to people.
Obama wants to reform healthcare to get the cost curve down. You say, “No!” Obama proposes a freeze on discretionary spending and you say, “No!” Obama proposes a panel with teeth to cut the budget, and again you say “No!” Obama proposes re instituting “Pay Go” and you scream, “No!”
The three presidents in U.S. history most responsible for increasing debt on their watch were: Ronald Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. Clinton CUT national debt. Bush I tried to cut the deficit and was turned out for it by your crowd. Every President of any stripe has cut debt as a % of GDP since WWII with the exception of those three. Reagan was full of hot air and his disciples continue to push the same poison.
TEMPORARY increased government spending in recessions/depressions is classic Keynesian economics and it works. Ask Herbert Hoover what happens when you do the opposite.
Obama put the cost of Afghanistan/Iraq on the budget. Bush hid it like a kid stuffing Playboys in the back of his closet to keep mom from finding them.
Who’s more responsible? The record is clear.

.
it seems that the govt. has been reduced to being a tool for the corps to manipulate the people and country to no end where people are getting screwed either way and no matter its dem or gop.
.
why blame the govt now when no jobs when it was previous admin.s that sent jobs overseas for the greed of profitability.

Brian:
Thank you for the time and effort to spell out the deficit FACTS for those who want to know them. As for most Republicans I have met, they don’t know, for example, that our national debt was at $5 trillion when Bush took office (225 years’ worth of deficit spending) and was over $10 trillion when he left. He created more debt in his 8 years than the other 43 presidents before him, and yet not a single Republican I know ever objected.

Posted by: Jeff | February 15, 2010, 5:55 pm 5:55 pm
Anoterh democrat speaks the truth.
But the democrats can’t seem to learn anything. They cater to their loony left wing like this fringe element really matters. It is the middle of America that matters. If the republicans can stop this lunatic administration than so be it. They will gain back a lot of their lost respect.

Given the choice between Republican-lite and Republican, Americans will choose Republican.
Americans support those that believe in their values. It’s why Bernie Sanders, a Social Democrat, does well in VT.
Before the corporate wing of the Dem party started loading all sorts of bipartisan/republican crap into HCR, people supported it. The vast majority of polls saw majority support for a public option.
If Democrats want to do well, they will stick to their guns and forget this bipartisan crap.

Wilder seems to want to make the point that the Democrats are in denial, but meybe after he reads the comments here, he’ll come to the conclusion that it’s really the GOP that is in denial, in particular as regards their leaving the current administration such a mess to clean up.
Blowhards like Stanley are perfect symbols for the Republicans. He doesn’t bother to address one single point in any of the posts that he takes issue in, he just claims them to be false without offering any proof to the contrary. Like Glen Beck, he seems to be unaware that google can help one to fact check.
Stop blaming Bush for the current state of affairs? OK. So by that same yardstick, then we have no choice but to blame Bush for what actually happened while he was in office. He, and his administration have the blood of the dead on their hands for 9-11. Hey, if Obama is supposed to have owned the economy just months after taking office, then surely Duh-bya would have to take responsibility for 9-11. Remember, “Bin Laden determined to strike in US?” and all the other warnings ignored. Blood on your hands, mate and on the hands of every person that voted GOP. Wars under false pretences? Your bad, too. All the lives lost on both side….GOP’s fault. All the lives and property lost in New Orleans because of poor response? GOP, all the way baby.

I never realized – even as the bitter Democratic primary season was winding down – how much Hillary Clinton’s candidacy was done in by the far left. Now, we’re stuck with an inexperienced President who’s betting his -and our future – on those same forces. Bayh understood better than us that Obama has no plans to move to the middle.
