Former Vice President Cheney in the Hospital After Chest Pains

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl and Karen Travers report:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is at George Washington University Hospital in Washington tonight after experiencing chest pains.

Cheney’s doctors are evaluating the situation and the former vice president is resting comfortably, his spokesman told ABC News tonight.

Cheney has a long history of heart problems. He has had four attacks, the first in 1978 when he was just 37 years old and the most recent in November 2000 after he and former President George W. Bush were elected to the White House. In 2001 Cheney had a pacemaker installed into his chest and last September he underwent elective back surgery to treat lumbar spinal stenosis.

On Friday Cheney is scheduled to see former President George W. Bush for the first time since they left office last January at a breakfast reunion of Bush White House staffers.

The news of Cheney’s hospitalization first broke because his daughter, Liz Cheney, cancelled a scheduled appearance at the Lincoln Day Republican dinner in Schaumburg, IL tonight.

Liz Cheney was to be the keynote speaker at the fundraiser organized for the Republican committees of Barrington, Elk Grove, Hanover, Palatine, Schaumburg and Wheeling townships.

An Illinois Republican involved with the planning of the event tonight said that he spoke to an aide to Liz Cheney at about 11am ET today.

The aide informed this official that Liz Cheney would not be able to attend the event because she was in Washington and at the hospital with her father.

Cheney is a great statesman and patriot.
Hope he gets well soon.

I knew this was coming! For all the ranting and bad mouthing of the president, Cheney should have known he has a defective heart. Not wishing him bad, but that is what you get when you constantly run your mouth and forget that you have a mechanical heart beating inside of you. I would not be surprised that once out of the hospital, he will resume his bad habit.

He was shocked by the “straw pole”. Ron Paul is his opposite and he can’t believe it and it pains his heart that Republicans could go that route.

Statesman??? is that what you call a mass murderer? when you kill one man without cause, what do you call that? you run in your nieghbors house and shoot him dead saying you had to because he may have weapons that could hurt you and then, he has none. What happens to you? You go to jail, murder in the first degree. You are a murder. So what makes you think you can do the SAME EXACT THING to hundreds of thousands of people and be anything BUT a mass murderer? He is evil. Most people recognize that unnecessary war is simply another name for murder en masse. I’d be pretty scared to die if I were him.

Interesting that the sub-heading is about “acceleration caused by electronic problems” – meant for Toyota story, but reads like his pacemaker needs a recall. He needs to calm down, step back, and relax a bit.

It has been obvious for some time that Mr. Cheney’s heart is inadequate.

his good friend Nixon—-oh no. Nixon didn’t start the war. no no, the thousands dead are not nixon’s fault, per se. But the hundreds of thousands ead, the ruined american lives, the americna children without fathers, oh no, that IS cheney and bush’s fault. It was their call, and they said “go!”

Cheney worked to protect the American people from the evils dreamed by a thug. The thug is now gone, the people he abused are now in the early stages of a democracy, the American people have not been hit by a terrorist attack since 911 and thankfully, no WMDs were found despite an overwhelming amount of intelligence findings from many different sources (including the Russians who believed it right to the end and tried to persuade the thug to give them up) saying he did have them. Be thankful America still has those ready to stand up to thuggery.

Cheney feels his days may be numbered. That is why he seeks personal redemption by disparaging a sitting President and portraying himself as the “good guy.”

Posted by: what667 | February 22, 2010, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

It’s a good thing that he has such good health insurance – supplied by the federal governmnet. It’s sad though, good health coverage is something he would like to deny so many Americans. I wonder if he will think about that. For the sake of his family, I wish him well. He is in God’s hands now.

Mr. Cheney, I wish you a stronger, better functioning heart, and a long life to use that stronger, better functioning heart and make amends.
Good luck, and my heart goes out to your family and loved ones as my dad has heart problems and I know how stressful that can be for those who love you and know you best.

The man is so full of anger and hate no wonder he is having heart problems. He needs to take a chill pill and keep his opinions and his mouth shut. If he keeps it up he is going to have a major heart attack and that will be the end of him. He needs to channel his anger towards the positive and maybe accept what is going on in the world around him. He is no longer involved or in charge and that is why he is so angry at the world!!!

“Cheney worked to protect the American people from the evils dreamed by a thug. The thug is now gone, the people he abused are now in the early stages of a democracy”…I know we are in the early stages of democracy – but I didn’t know Cheney stood up to Bush. I thought Cheney was the more evil of the two. Whatever the case, it is going to take a while to rebuild our democracy that Bush-Cheney destroyed….

Hey “Seriously”, your brilliant commentary “Statesman??? is that what you call a mass murderer?”, Does that apply to FD Roosevelt? Harry Truman? John Kennedy? Lyndon Johnson?
They all were Presidents that were commanders in chief and saw thousands die as a result of their actions or inactions. Personally, since Johnson’s micromanaging affected me personally, I feel more animosity toward that great Democrat-Socialist than the others, but hey, you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.

Cheney’s approval rating was 11% when he left office. 89% of Americans disapproved of him and the job he’d done.
Tens of thousands died and many tens of thousands more were maimed because of his administration’s decisions. His little two-step back and forth between government and CEO of Halliburton didn’t sit well with many Americans.
His vitriolic attacks on the President also are not appreciated by many Americans, including two top military men General Powell and General Petraeus – who publicly told Cheney this week he’s way off the mark.

Note that it was Libby who took the hit for covering up – for higher ups like Cheney, not Armitage – for outing an active CIA Agent, Valerie Plame.
And those people you call “lying lefties” included the CIA Agent George Wilson who told the country that Bush and Cheney LIED about the Nigeria-Iraq Uranium connection. And, to get even, the White House decided to put a scare in Wilson by outing his wife: Valerie Plame!

CHENEY’S WARS
We wish Cheney well. However, we cannot ignore the nasty hue of his current politics and the stress that possibly triggered his current health problems. Over the weekend, in searing strokes, two highly respected Generals (Powell and Petraeus) demolished the thesis of Cheney’s up-coming revisionist book on his role in the Bush White House and his touted credentials on national security. On Monday, the Justice Department released a damaging analysis debunking Cheney’s claims that harsh interrogation methods worked. Cheney did not get the vindication he sought! Cheney does not have in his bone the idealism of a Mother Terera. Indeed, a case can be made that he lived on the dark side of power that needs fear to sustain it. Like many neo-cons, he employs deficient “facts” and arguments to confuse the masses. They hope that repeated falsehood would result in fulfillment just as corporations do in advertising. These two tricks (power through fear, and use of subliminal propaganda) Cheney learned well in the corporate world. Cheney thus aims to impact our thinking on the future. He asserts that Obama would be a “one-time President” in a barely begun Presidency. Remember Cheney’s score card. He predicted that Iraq will welcome the US as liberators; it didn’t happen. But such are the things that keep Cheney awake at night—aware that history will not treat him kindly. Perhaps some entities, at home or abroad, are still plotting a charge of war crimes against him. Cheney is scared!

Cheney will never die, that man sold his soul to to the devil, in return he will just suffer forever….

To jerry,mikemcdon321, & ddsimms…if you can’t come up with any “comments” better or less hypocritical than that – why post at all? I saw far worse comments from the “right” when John Murtha died. And HE was a TRUE patriot and served our country honorably.

It is interesting to see “progressives” once again joining sides with Jihadists in wishing the death of a US elected official (or former).

Isn’t it great to get sick when you have an awesome health plan? What the hospital and doctors should do is send him a bill for what it would have cost him had he not had a good health plan so he can at least see what the rest of us have to deal with. Knowing Cheney he will probably just rip it and throw it away. He reminds me of Marie Antoinette. Remember her famous line? “Let them eat cake”. She obviuosly did not care about the poor, just like Cheney.

we certainly wouldn’t want to bring up up the rightwingers who were screaming ‘kill him’ (Obama) during the campaign, usually when Palin appeared.. so by your own standards rightwingers are Jihadists ..

Maybe the devil is calling his evil arse home.

Oh, the old reprobate will pull through. After Powell and Petraeus raked his nasty old hide over the coals, he came down with a bad case of gas. It happens every time the old goat gets called out on his lies.

If government health care is good enough for Cheney, why can’t I have it?

Not to mention the people at CPAC calling for the death of Senators two days ago.
The hypocricy! How it burns!
