Obama Econ Adviser: Stimulus Going into “Peak Impact” Now

ABC News’ David Chalian Reports: Democrats and Republicans have been manning their battle stations all day on the one year anniversary of the stimulus. We are seeing the intensity of a spin war that is usually saved for the height of campaign season as each side tries to define the success or failure, depending on your perspective, of the president’s $787 billion recovery bill. One criticism the White House is facing in defending the stimulus is the pace at which dollars have actually been spent.  According to recovery.gov, just over one-third of the $787 billion has been paid out to recipients. “The stimulus is peaking in the, you know, around now and the first couple of quarters of this year is when it’s going into its peak impact on the economy,” said Austan Goolsbee, a member of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, on ABC News’ “Top Line” today. “And no single government program is ever going to be enough to fill that 8 million job hole that was created in this deepest recession since 1929,” Goolsbee added.  He went on to say that the administration is on target to hit its stated goal of saving or creating 3.5 million jobs once all of the recovery act money has been disbursed.   Goolsbee’s comments about the economic impact peaking now and in the first couple of quarters of this year seemed to be at odds with what CEA Chairwoman Dr. Christina Romer said during her congressional testimony in October. “Most analysts predict that the fiscal stimulus will have its greatest impact on growth in the second and third quarters of 2009. By mid-2010, fiscal stimulus will likely be contributing little to growth,” Dr. Romer said in her appearance before the Joint Committee on Taxation. “I think that’s when it started peaking,” Goolsbee said when we pressed him about how to square his comments about the economic impact of the stimulus with Dr. Romer’s October comments.  “It’s kind of bumping around at the top period I think that’s where maybe the confusion is and then by the end of this year it starts, it starts going down. It’s still having a big impact but it’s contribution to growth gets smaller as it shrinks,” he added. Dr. Romer also told George Stephanopoulos on GMA today that the biggest bang from the stimulus is “absolutely not” already behind us. “In terms of the level of things we care about like employment and the unemployment rate, those effects are going to grow over time,” Romer said on GMA. We also chatted with GQ’s Washington correspondent, Ana Marie Cox, about how the White House could have done a better job selling the stimulus bill to the American people over the course of the last year and what role the press has played in the apparently significant misunderstanding among the electorate about the bill.

Obama waited a year to allocate that majority of the money because 2009 was not an election year, but 2010 is.
The ‘stimulus’ was meant to stimulate voters to pull the lever, feeling good about Democrats.
It was never about creating jobs last year when it was needed most.

Why can’t those people do even a single thing intelligently? The level of incompetence shown by the entire Obama administration is appalling and insulting to the millions of people in the United States who are suffering due to their impotence and incapacity to discern what is good and what is bad.
The piling of idiocy upon idiocy reminds me of the same behavior of George III back in the 1770s.
The Obama administration must be called out by the people for what it is: a very sick joke.
Those who voted for these amateurs need to do penance for their wreaking havoc on the rest of us — we, who tried our best to warn the country about what a disaster Obama would be as president.
Obama is a flop. He’s ruining our economy, our future, our way of live, and for what??? For his pet, failed political philosophy, one that’s been proven time after time after time to be worthless and poisonous to human beings.
Had he a soul that was sensitive to the difference between right and wrong, he’d be aghast at his own behavior. But, alas, Obama seems to be an amoral fellow who cares only for what the true narcissist cares for: his ability to control others and keep at bay the niggling feelings of inadequacy that haunt him day and night, waking or sleeping.
I just hope that people are watching him and step in when the public’s outcry at his outrageousness causes him to snap.
Barack Obama going postal will not be pretty, folks. And it could come at any time, so there had better be professionals watching him closely in order to protect the country from what he might do in the desperation that is sure to be his lot in the near future.

“tarnarg”, surely you are aware that this Great Recession STARTED at the end of 2007? The “wreaking of havoc” was happening many years before Obama took office.
After one year? We just experienced the biggest the biggest GDP growth since 2003. According to the Financial Times, the US economy expanded at an annual rate of 5.7% between October and December. And, it was driven by companies increasing spending on equipment and software in preparation for an UPTURN + slashing inventories much less aggressively.
Step out of the negative echo chamber and read a range of opinions. For example, Moody’s chief economist, Mark Zandi, who says the stimulus is doing what it was intended to do: contributing to ending the recession.

With a straight face they can say all
this crap. Unbelievable.

Mark Zandi, Democratic economist should be replaced at Moody’s, he is politicizing and supporting a stimulus package which will bankrupt America. He is putting politics over the welfare of Americans. Any one with integrity knows you cannot spend more than is taken in. Prior to 2010 elections more of the stimulus money will be released to make Obama and the Dems look good, however once Bush tax cuts run out in 2011, eveyone will get to enjoy an additional 13% increase in taxes. Now that is some hope with little change. I pray Americans do not forget all the pain and suffering that Obama, Pelosi and Company have wreaked prior to the 2010 elections.

A CBS/NY times poll today:
Number of Americans who feel the Stimulus is working: 6%
Also from a poll conducted by CBS:
Number of Americans who believe ELVIS is still alive: 7%!!!
Thats pretty funny!

Why all are all the Republican members of Congress criticizing the stimulus, while at the same time taking the stimulus money for their pet projects?
It is almost laughable to see these Republicans standing in for their photo opts with their big grins, holding those huge checks and taking credit for bringing money to their state. Really cynical since they pretend that the stimulus money is bad.
It would be nice if they offered some constructive suggestions instead of being complete obstructionists.
Republican thy name is hypocrite!

That’s amusing. “Peak Impact” amounts to no discernible impact, whatsoever.
