President Obama Signs Law Raising Public Debt Limit from $12.4 Trillion to $14.3 Trillion
Behind closed doors and with no cameras present, President Obama signed into law Friday afternoon the bill raising the public debt limit from $12.394 trillion to $14.294 trillion.
The current national debt is $12.3 trillion. Check out the National Debt Clock, which tells you your share of that — roughly $40,000 per citizen, $113,000 per taxpayer.
The bill also establishes a statutory Pay-As-You-Go procedure requiring that new non-emergency legislation affecting tax revenue or mandatory spending not increase the Federal deficit – in other words, that any new spending or tax cuts be paid for with new taxes or spending cuts.

This is the part that is actually news. The debt limit has been increased so many times it isn’t news. But reinstatement of pay-as-you-go, which the Republican Congress eliminated in 2002, is actually news.

And when there is no inflation, just remember how reliable a source of economic advice the right wing is (sorta like the Iraqi’s will pay for their own reconstruction, or how all of Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy will trickle down into more jobs).

This is how irrational the Republican base has gotten – they now are making attacks on transparency because they don’t get to see what kind of pen is used to sign the bill (which has been publicly available for a while now).

“…any new spending or tax cuts be paid for with new taxes or spending cuts…”
Guess which one they’ll be going with every time? Hint: It’s not the spending cuts option.
And “tierra” – the PAYGO rule for the House was new in 2007 (under Democratic control), there was no “removal” by anyone. It just didn’t have teeth.
And Debt limits? Who cares? We let everyone in America buy a house with no way of paying it back, look how well that turned out! This will be just as foolproof, responsible, and stable.

Everything the White House does, or anyone that visits is available on line. Go check for yourself. The comment about cameras tries to mask the real meaning of the bill. PAYGO is liberal-speak for “raise taxes”
“how all of Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy will trickle down into more jobs).”
During the Bush administration, jobs ere created for a record 46 consecutive months. We’re still waiting for 2 consecutive months of job growth from The-One-We’ve-Been-Waiting-For-Boy-King.

But even with all this Bush kept his average budget deficit well under $500 billion (which is still WAY too much).
Our Community-Organizer-in-Chief on the other hand has proposed a budget for 2011 that carries a $1,600 billion defict. Care to explain the difference?

Raising taxes to cover your spending as you do it is a responsible way to run governement. Running up the deficit to pay for your spending, the approach established by Republicans, is not.

That’s it? That’s the cherry picking you’re decided on – taking credit for the long slide into this historic recession? During the Clinton administration, 23 million jobs were created, the budget was balanced, and almost a $2 trillion surplus was forcast. Under Bush (who was in office for 96 months not 46)? Only 4.8 million jobs were created, the deficit evaporated entirely, the economy crashed and the debt skyrocketed. But hey, the top 2% really saw their incomes soar relative to everyone else.
That’s documented reality. Clinton (or Congress, with higher tax rates on the wealthy) balanced the budget and created almost 5 times as many jobs.

The past is gone, if you owe money you cut back to pay it down you don’t go hog wild on the credit cards. Sorry but arguing the past is not going to do a bit of good to change or help going forward. Tip612 actually errored. It was 52 consecutive months of job growth–Sept 2003-Dec 2007. You failed to mention the Bush Administration having to recover from the inherited 2000-2001 Dot.com recession, and the economic effects of the 9/11/2001 attacks. It was the Bush tax cuts that brought the economy back from THAT to the 52 consecutive month economic boom.
You also failed to mention that it was the Republicans who held the majority in BOTH Houses of Congress during Clinton’s last 6 years–including writing the budget surpluses the last two years. You also fail to mention that the Democrats held the majority in BOTH Houses of Congress during the economic collapse during the last 6 months of President Bush’s tenure.
Finally, it is interesting that the Left has criticized the Bush Administration for doubling the national debt from $5 trillion to $10 trillion in 8 years. Yet they don’t appear to care that President Obama is on course to nearly equaling Bush’s total in just 2 years.

We need jobs, less spending, homeland security, debt reduction, etc. We don’t want government-run health care reform! I bitterly resent what this party’s leadership has been doing this past year AND since 2006 when they took control of Congress. They’ve lied, deceived, contradicted and engaged in such actions as to be criminal. They’ve looked down upon the American people with such arrogant conceit and even went so far as to dismiss the millions who have spoken out against their policies. I do NOT, for one minute, believe nor trust anything they say. They say what we want to hear, for one purpose and one purpose only: to get themselves re-elected. There can be only one response: Vote them all out of office! NO MORE! They all need to go in 2010 and 2012.

Would you backward, backwoods, idiots stop the vitriol and stop it with all the rhetoric about Obama. You are just repeating what you hear from the Right Wing media. You clearly have no idea what is going on in Washington and how the Government really works.
The Congress passed an extension to the debt ceiling because they had to. Had the CONGRESS (not Obama) increased the debt limit, we would forfeit on all our outstanding debt and no other country would offer us credit.
Turn off Fox News and pick up a newspaper not written to appease a 6th grade vocabulary, and learn about the economy. Learn and think for yourselves. Then maybe you’ll cut President Obama some slack.

Here’s a fact for those who haven’t read their history. In the old days the Democrats were the ones who supported slavery while the Republican party was founded to free the black slaves.
Nowadays the Democrats are working to economically enslave all American taxpayers by constantly enlarging the Federal government, raising taxes and increasing the national debt.
I just wish that folks would realize that the Democrats don’t believe in democracy or liberty and are only looking to increase their power, take away our freedoms and achieve total control over our lives.
People should resist this power grab.

They obviously don’t care about the debt, no matter what they say…so this must be intentional. I guess this will be fundamental change whats his name was talking about…to insolvency…equal poverty…as dictated by the liars we sent to D.C.

This is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering… And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression.” Thomas Jefferson

We have not time to think, no means of calling the mis-managers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow suffers. One has to seriously wonder what Obama’s ultimate goal really is. He cannot be so stupid as to believe that such a move will not have dire economic, social and cultural consequences for the US. Therefore, more and more people are coming to the conclusion that his actions are calculated to do exactly that–cause the downfll of the US. This makes his actions treasonous and him a traitor. Unfortunately, he is not acting alone and others in the government are abetting him.

All America can answer that question – it will be Bush’s fault even though Oblama was in the Senate in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and voted for the deficit before he was against it, and then inherited it.

Obama was IN Congress starting in 2006 and I don’t remember him making any great speeches about the deficit problem. In fact, it is just the opposite. We will get no meaningful reversal of our misfortunes, until we nationalize the Federal Reserve. That’s the private bank which determines how much a dollar is worth and has been given power by Congress to print however much money it wants. Sadly our nation is kept under the illusion of a Democrat vs. Republican tug-of-war. The bankers determine who wins primaries, so that all important elections are within accepted limits of the bankers’ wishes. The bankers control what quality of life we will have, since they control what value pensions hold, and what value a dollar has. AND, in the last few months, they have stopped telling us how many dollars they are creating. Now, for the first time, it’s a secret. Without defeating these criminals, we have not a snowball’s chance of “taking back our government.”
Posted by: Randolph | February 13, 2010, 6:04 pm 6:04 pm
Correction: The bankers have great influence on who wins primaries (both Dem. and Rep.) in more essential races. For example, candidates for President.
Point is, we need to nationalize the Federal Reserve and take back the rudder. Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter if a Palin or a Clinton wins… although it does make good political “Superbowl.”

Economic egalitarianism (definition)

Would somebody grab these federal reserve truthers and shake some sense into them? The Federal reserve is about as “private” as the Marines… The banks that are chartered by the federal reserve “own stock”, but that is just words. They are required to keep reserves there. The fact that they are called stock holders doesn’t mean that they OWN it or that they get to vote etc. It is set up by the government, run by a board appointed by presidents and confirmed by the senate and is 100 percent a tool of the government and, in all practical and real senses, a PART of the government. PERIOD. END OF STORY. There is some distance built in to keep the congress from trying to micromanaging the banking system and to give them some deniability when things aren’t perfect. The Postal Service isn’t part of the government either, right? yeah, RIGHT.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a moneyed aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.” Thomas Jefferson
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.” Thomas Jefferson

From a year ago, I see a remarkable difference in the amount of people that want to defend Obama. Could it be the masses have awaken and realized how bad the voters screwed up?
I see some very dark days ahead for us as a country trying to get out of this mess. As for Republicans defending the actions of this Admin tells you they are not true Conservatives.
It is time for every American citizen to refresh their minds and read the Declaration of Inpendence and the US Constitution again. Too many have given their lives to protect these Documents.
The individual issues that people are so headstrong about will not matter, you will never have those things you seek because your freedom to choose will be gone if we continue down this path. Gay/Lesbian issues,Prochoice issues, animal rights activits, womens rights, people of colors rights, NONE compare to the need to unite right now for the sake of our nation. The far left may promise you the moon but it ain’t going to happen!

I am beginning to think that the election of The Big O was a good thing. Here me out….as someone else posted electing RINO McCain would have just taken us to the cliff more slowly, only to still find ourselves there but at a later even more unseemly date and condition.
By electing The Big O we are getting to the cliff at an accelarated pace, a pace that is beginning to scare the crap out of the backseat riders in the car.
This is great; maybe just maybe enough of the population will wake up and turn the steering wheel before we fly off at 110 miles per hour.
But all the same we are screwed, we did it to ourselves. We are and will be bankrupt; period. It’s only about how long it will take us to turn it around, probably minimum of 13 years by my estimate and that would only happen if we stopped spending today!

I agree with Pal,
Americans need to wake up and take control of the steering wheel and that might mean getting far away from the Democratic Party and the Republican Party… We need to vote for people who are for the Constitution. God Bless America.

I suppose this little Private signing was like his swearing in . No body saw anything, but Obama. Oh, and I suppose tyhis was by excutoive Order. Surely Congress did not raise it to 14 trillion on their own. I think there is a job Congress needs to do. That is to remove our excutive from office while they get a handle on who he is. and where he is from. Because if he can just use excutive Order to do all the damage he wants to America then what do we need to be paying a Democrat Congress to make laws for.
Posted by: John Smith | February 14, 2010, 12:59 am 12:59 am
Rahm Emanuel said Obama will issue executive orders to pass the items which Congress did not pass. He apparently is doing just that. Other items on his “executive order” agenda are: health care, “cap and trade”, energy, illegal amnesty and God knows what. Obama is doing what Germany and Japan were not able to do – bring down America. He is changing our government into a Dictatorship.

Obama is going after the middle class, now saying he will tax them more to help pay off his bills. Another campaign promise he has broken – but then, has he kept any campaign promise? He is a pathological liar. I am absolutely sick of him.

The one-year budget deficit is now about $1.5 Trillion. 14 years ago the entire budget wasn’t that much. There’s too much money flowing to people and organizations that are non-producers.
Furthermore, our credit score isn’t so good around the world. When we hit our national credit limit, whatever it may be, we are totally out of luck — and I fear we don’t have long to wait.

We have quickly learned that Obama is simply a Chicago suit that got lucky. The dems were looking for a hand out, so Obama promised them free health care. He over promised. With his back against the wall he is willing to screw this country to pay them back for their vote. The dems only care about their payback becouse like Obama, their abhorrence for this country runs deep. The upside – the dems will never ever be in power again.

Jim, don’t be stupid. It’s not the number of times that one President or another has signed the bill to raise the debt limit. Congress is simply spending us into oblivion. The highest limit Bush raised it to wasn’t enough for this Administration. The number of occurrences isn’t the issue, it’s the fantastic amount of money, our money, that’s being given away here. Focusing on things like the number of times this guy or that guy did this or that, is ignorant.

Its not about left and right….they are the same thing. Like coca cola and pepsi. You say “down with obama.”…and “congress needs to do something”…..I say burn the whole system down along with all the politicians….put them all on trial, execute and put in jail those that devoured our nation…they are all held accountable for the destruction of our nation….even for those politicians that stood on the side line and did nothing…2012 you are all excited for? for what? even if we get obama out, were simply gonna trade one buffoon for another…it does not matter if its a republican or democrat….there the same thing with the same agenda…and we are not included in that agenda. I tell you this…if this political system is not uprooted soon, our nation is forever lost (if it isnt already). Our political system has become so vile, corrupt, bought out that this country is almost not worth fighting for. If we are going to say these things, and not back our words up then our words are forfeit. If all we do is chat, then we have already lost. Everyone has become to comfortable in their everyday lives, soooo hard to give up our simple pathetic robotic routines. For shame on all us who do not stand up for what is right. If you believe in God, I suggest you pray…because that is your only hope if you wish our nation to remain, for we have all turned to cowards and sit in silence as our enemies overthrow us.

At the rate Mr Obama et al are running through money, at the expense of the (productive) American people, we may not make it to the end of his 1st term, let alone have to worry if he gets another 4 yrs.
Some how, Americans need to let DC know that they can spend all they want, but that WE refuse to be responsible for their blowing money like a drunken sailor on shoreleave.

When will this stop? and this was done behind closed doors yet!! Broken promises, lies and secret agendas. If his “health care plan” ever passes heaven help us. I don’t know a Nurse or a Doctor that is in favor of anything they have heard out of the DC Health Plans. The first thing DC need to do is something about the “lawyers”. If the Law Suits were under control, Health Care costs would go down dramatically. BUT, all of the people in DC making the laws (or at least most of them are lawyers) so they will never do anything to take $$$ out of the hands of their own!!! But that is where it needs to start. Then maybe Doctors wouldn’t have to practice defensive medicine, ordering tests that patients really don’t need just to cover their (the doctor’s) backside. Yes, patients should get every test needed, and no one should tell the doctor otherwise. Believe me when I tell you that I have argued with Insurance Co. to get tests and/or Dr. visits approved, and I have always won. Usually it is a matter of getting to the right person. But the Obama Medical Plan is NOT, and I repeat NOT the way to go, and neither are most of his other ideas!
GOD Please Bless America – While there still is one!!!

I live and work abroad. I had a co-worker ask whether the US will devalue its currency – I had to break it to her that the dollar IS the currency, it can’t technically devalue. It can inflate though. The only way to pay off a national debt this size if through inflation, which will be bad for consumers, and for our debt holders, which means the international economy.

The direction and purposefor these things.
Burning the Field by MarcF.Brocato2006 The American Cash Cow – ALL BULLS OUT.
Back in the old days, before fencing had subdivided and cordoned off the once opened areas of land throughout the south, the farmers and cattlemen of the day would burn off the fields and woodlands. During the summer, vegetation in the forms of grasses, briars, and various shrubs would grow in the open fields and meadows. These plants were a source of nutrition for livestock and a major food supply for the herds which where allowed to roam freely. In the fall of the year, winter would set in and the summer growth cycle would end. With the onset of cold winter weather, the grasses and other vegetation would die, leaving the landscape lifeless and brown. The purpose of burning the woods were twofold. First, the fire had a cleansing effect by clearing the ground of useless and unwanted debris. Secondly, nutrients where returned to the soil, making them available for the next succession of growth. One could look north and south, east and west, and see the numerous columns of smoke rising into the sky.
The yearly roundup took place in the fall, at which time the cattle were gathered together. The ranchers collected their ( cash ) cows, some were sold at auction and others where put in places of safe keeping (Euro’s, Swiss franks, Yen, and gold…. ). Not until all the cattle where herded together and relocated were the fields and woods set on fire. This was the economic cycle that reoccurred year after year, a necessary evil of the day and was eventually outlawed.. Thousands of independent ranchers would be replaced by the large cooperate cattle companies. And so it is with food and many other good and services today, from the hands of the thousands who established the market, whatever that market might be, into the hands of the few who now control it. But that’s not the end of this story, it’s far from over. Apply these same principles and methods to the national and global economy. It appears as if the industrialists and financiers who control the economies of the world have been moving their cash cows out of the U.S. .for a long time in advance of a controlled burn or just maybe wildfire. The crash of the ‘30′s was such an action, however, every major market on the face of the earth will be effected this go round. A well planned choreography of events will reshape the global economy in ways which the average individual cannot comprehend. When the fires are out and the smoke clears, the result will be an empty shell of a country, with an economic landscape barren and ready for the next season of growth.
Enjoy your freedom and rights, savor them as you would your favorite meal. Life in the United States and the entire civilized world shall soon go through quiet a transition. Similar circumstances have overtaken unsuspecting populations in the past, but never the entire world, as it will this time. What shall be used as the form of ignition? Will it be a manipulated economic disaster, or some fabricated terrorist act. Perhaps a bonafide and unexpected act of God that was not a part of man’s planning. Maybe those in Washington will legislate the country out of existence by executive order, it’s amusing to think a thing like that is possible. Imagine, a economic system with no exchange rate, a global unit of currency. One currency and one governing authority.
The surest way to prevent seditions is to take away the matter of them; for if there be fuel prepared, it is hard to tell whence the spark shall come that shall set it on fire. – Bacon.

The debt ceiling was raised almost $2 trillion just so that the government can continue to pay it’s obligations (social security, welfare, medicare, etc.)for the rest of the year. The government would have run out of money this year prior to the November elections. If you don’t think this country is already over, think again.

It is past time for state and local governments and the people of this nation to stand up for their people and let Washington know that, while DC can raise the debt ceiling as high as they care to, that We The People divorce ourselves from the responsibility of repaying the bill. Let Mr Obama, Ms Pelosi, Mr Reid, et al pay for their own spending spree. Maybe then, they’ll stop spending like drunken sailors.

You all need to go back to school and study how the gov works. This was not a secret, Congress passed the bill (as they have done many times in the past) before it got to the Pres’ desk. He signs lots of bills behind closed doors with no cameras, etc., present. This is routinely done and this is how the government works and Obama did not invent the process.

STOP WELFARE! Can you imagine what our economy, and country would look like if we didn’t have to bail out that 40% who do not want to work? How about the other 20% of government and union employees that claim they work but are actually sitting around with their hands out? On welfare more than three years? You have 6 months to get it together. Hand out stops. Going on welfare? You have two years to get it together. Then hand out stops. Union auto workers on government bail out? 25% wage cut until you have paid back the American tax payer. Banks on government welfare? 50% wage cut until you pay back the American tax payer. American Indian on government welfare. 6 months. Get it together you lost the war.

It is time for those who can see and feel the boot to choose a path that will end their slavery. Although we will undoubtedly be labeled traitors and un-American for leaving the ‘protection’ of the police state, it is the only possible option. The system cannot be fixed, it must be destroyed, and since it is obvious that the sheep are content, that will never happen.

In other words, we will be paying for all new legislation. The government does not believe in cutting spending.

Wake up…American Indians are approved assistance through treaties acts and to this day do NOT recieve the funding they are ENTITLED to..obviously your lack of education is extremely obvious.
Bonds that are entitled to Indians are controlled in govt offices and doled out to big companies for bailouts etc…dont believe it…do some research and see who bailed out the automotive industry..yeah the Natives fund WITHOUT permission..
do some research before you say the war is over and whites won…get real… we fight every day for our culture, history, religion, you name it…what do you fight for?
