Secretary Clinton Set to Visit Chile Tuesday

ABC's Kirit Radia reports: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to visit Chile on Tuesday, part of a five country swing through Latin America that was planned well before Saturday's massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake. The tremor occurred about 321 km from the capital of Santiago, but was strong enough to knock out power and sway tall buildings there. The city's airport closed as a result. So far, the State Department has not announced any changes to Clinton's travel plans. She had been expected to meet with the country's outgoing President Michelle Bachelet and its President-elect Sebastian Pinera. A State Department official, on the condition of anonymity, tells ABC News says at least three of the US embassy's 118 personnel have not be accounted for, which may be due to difficult communications today.  A State Department spokeswoman, Megan Mattson, said the US has been in touch with the Chilean government and has offered any assistance, though no requests have yet been made. Mattson said the State Department has not received any reports of American citizens killed or injured as a result of the quake. She said there are approximately 1,000 American citizens in the most affected area, about half of which are dual nationals. After another devastating earthquake struck Haiti earlier this year, Clinton paid a special visit to the hard-hit capital of Port au Prince just days later. She was on the ground for only a few hours and held all her meetings with top officials at the airport because, she said, she did not want her visit to distract precious resources from the rescue effort. Clinton's visit to Chile on Tuesday is part of a whirlwind trip that will take her to Uruguay on Monday, Brazil on Wednesday, Costa Rica on Thursday, and Guatemala on Friday before returning to Washington that evening.

She should telecommute. America is broke. She is already championing a $1 billion embassy in London to go with our $1 billion dollar embassy in Baghdad. This state department extravaganzas are unwarranted given the fact that Americans are suffering so much here at home. Vote for people like Ron Paul folks, please.

Yes, we are as broke as can be, but I see Clinton’s traveling more as an insult, jut one way of trying to get rid of her in Washington. I bet she could tell a lot of what goes on there. Not surprising she is not running for a second term.

Yes, Huh is right. A 1 Billion dollar plus embassy in Baghdad and a newly planned 1 Billion dollar embassy in London and they have now kicked out the retired military members overseas who have P.O. boxes in the embassies. Clinton and her anti-military State Dept. people don’t want us to have our PO boxes but we still have to pay US taxes. Our politicians won’t help us. Drain the swamp in 2010 and vote for Ron Paul.

Can they keep her? Even Obama doesn’t want her around.

She should stay home and telecomute. Her husband should be also told to stop making trips to mexico to applaud the richest man in earth Carlos slim a mexican-libanesse owner of Telmex, and name lender of past presidents in Mexico. Obama should have seen this before he put her there.

If anything, you’d think she’d by-pass Chile so that recuse attempts and proper agencies there can do their job, instead of having to deal with some US dignitary visiting. Instead, she’ll treat this as a photo opportunity and a chance to make a speech of some kind. :-(

This was a previous planned trip, and some of you are idiots other countries are sending their diplomats to wittness the election which is one of the reasons she is going to latin america. If she didnt go you all would scream that she wasn’t doing anything. Her trip wasnt a photo opt it was for her to bring home americans in haiti who wanted out and she had been working with haiti long before the earthquake its her job to meet with foreign offical’s government. You all need to get a grip. Hillary is doing a great job and she already commented that many foreign offical’s prefer face to face. So you guys should chill out.

Memo to Clinton…….the US is already deeply in debt. There is NO money to throw at Chile!

If you exclude traveling abroad to conduct face-to-face meetings with foreign leaders and otherwise represent United States interests, conducting our foreign policy from embassies, and visiting our allies when they’re experiencing crises, including natural disasters, you’d blow a huge hole in the job description of Secretary of State. Disliking Secretary Clinton is perfectly fine, but attacking her for doing her job is a little puzzling.
