‘Top Line’ — Can Pelosi Get the Votes?
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Health care reform is all about the magic number 217 right now. That's the number of votes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to secure to pass the Senate-approved bill and send something on to President Obama's desk at long last. Pelosi managed to wrangle 220 votes last year for health care reform — but that was on a different piece of legislation, and during a different political time. Between vacant seats and public pronouncements of changed minds, House Democratic leaders are almost certainly well short of 217 today. Can Pelosi get there? That was our Twitter question of the day today. Time’s Karen Tumulty — a frequent “Top Line” guest, and @ktumulty in the Twitterverse — offered a smart response: “Looking back over the past year, I wouldn't bet against Nancy Pelosi to get the votes that she needs.” We talked about it with Politico’s Jonathan Martin today on ABC’s “Top Line.” He’s not betting against the speaker, either: “She moved cap and trade. I mean, that is a Herculean task given a lot of these Democrats [are] from coal-fired states,” Martin said. “With the fate of their majority hanging in the ballots, do you want to lose 60 seats, guys? I mean, if that’s the message, then I think she gets the votes. It’s not just the folks that have retired — it’s the folks that are going to retire still. There are going to be more House Democrats that are not going to run for reelection. They know it privately, the speaker knows it privately. Look, what’s the downside in voting for this bill?” Former Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., agreed: “I think if you’re a Democrat, you better have something to show for this.”

Is Congress Sounding Dumber?
Too many career politicians under close scrutiny to get 217 votes right now. Fear not. It’s not gonna happen.

With a polled 70% of the public opposed to the passage of this legislation? Yes we want healthcare reform and the President has promised it, but the only way he’ll get it is to include both parties in drawing up agreed upon legislation, which is as political process should be. WE need both cost control and extended coverage.

Shouldn’t Pelosi be flying to Copenhagen again on the taxpayer’s dime.

All I know is this..our new car driving, fully employed, buffed and botoxed neighbors went out and bought a second home in Oct, walked away from their first home (3 doors down) in November..and this week it sold in hours (shortsale) for half what they paid, and a full 1/3rd less than every house for sale in our already depressed neighborhood. Im mad at the realtor, obviously this is an inside deal, but what do they care? They are making up for the losses in values by the sheer volume of cheap houses they are pushing. I’m mad at the bank for not being willing to try to get more money for the house, but what do they care? They are covered on their losses no doubt by mortgage insurance, or the VA, or Fan/Fred, the FDIC… But most of all, I’m mad at our govt, but what do they care? There’s too big to fail, and too big to care about the details, so people take advantage of every loophole in every stupid, but well meaning, program they design. I can’t wait to see how I get stiffed again in this latest humungous healthcare bill designed for our own good..and I can’t wait to see how people with no integrity like my old neighbors, and every other business entity involved, take a swan dive into every loophole they find in this giga-bill. I’m just a regular tax paying, law abiding American who is starting to get a back ache from all this ankle grabbing.
