‘Top Line’ — Obama’s GOP Courtship ‘All for Show’

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: President Obama’s outreach to Republicans — particularly on health care — is frustrating some of his liberal supporters, who view such moves as a waste of time at this point of the presidency, when the GOP has made its outright opposition clear. We talked about that on ABC’s "Top Line" today with liberal blogger Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake.com, who today declared the Senate-passed health care bill “dead as a doornail.” "They’re all running to the right, which I don’t quite understand, because it’s the Democrats that have to turn out for them," Hamsher told us. "So you explain it to me, but I just don’t see a lot of movement. I think it’s sort of glacial." In that context, reaching out to the GOP isn’t likely to gain any votes for health care — but it will make clear that Republicans aren’t offering real solutions, Hamsher said. "I think that it’s actually a really good idea," she said. "I think he was very good last week or the week before at the Republican summit, and one of the big fictions that has happened all along that people keep perpetuating is that the Republicans haven’t been consulted in this. … So let’s do it in public where we’ll have the document of videotape so we can see that they’ve been consulted." Hamsher: "It’s all sort of for show, I think. But I think it does put an end to the lie that the Republicans haven’t been consulted." Watch the segment with Jane Hamsher HERE. We also checked in with the AP’s Liz Sidoti, who said the outreach to the GOP seems more about burnishing Obama’s own reelection chances than about helping Democrats win races this year. "I actually think that this is more about 2012 and this is more about the president and his legacy than it is about making sure that Democrats can get elected in 2010," Sidoti told us. Watch that portion of today’s "Top Line" HERE.

I’m telling you now (no not the song) he is positioning himself to show the people what type of frauds that are keeping health care reform from happening. And when they don’t respond properly, he will use reconciliation and ram it home. At least that is my sincere hope. Because that is the only way he will achieve his goal health care cost reform. The Republicans are just too tied to the wealthy health care corporations and their owners. Why else have they just dodged, delayed and just plain spread lies, misinformation and fear?

It is mostly for show, agreed. He has been severely criticized for failure to make good on his campaign promise to get both sides to work together, which of course, has been so dismal, it is pathetic.

Chris Matthews asked a R spokesman 5 times last night on Hardball what the GOP plan was to cover the 30 million uninsurred since no GOP HC plan was ever submitted during their control of Congress and the WH. The GOP spokesman finally relented and admitted that they have no plan to deal with the uninsurred. He did mention that they would work with the free market and provide tax breaks to buy into HC plans, unfortunately he failed to mention that premiums have become to expensive for many American. Matthews responded, that is precisely why this country has been unable to pass comprehensive HC reform since Truman started the initiative 70 years ago and why premiums continue to rise out of control. So much for POTUS’s trying to deal honestly with GOP Senators. Like with every other issue of national concern they are brain dead and have no ideas beyond tax cuts.

Congresswoman Michele Bachman stated last week that old people needed Medicare and Social Security but that it is about time that younger people start WEANING themselves off Medicare and Social Security.
Question: Is this now the official position of the GOP; that the country start Weaning Itself off/end Social Security and Medicare?
Texas Congresseman Hanserling made it clear to Chris Matthews the other day that he wants to revisit privatizing Social Security. Are these the positions the GOP intends to run on in November?

normally I´d say its the dems who take from the worker, and give to the non worker. and the GOP has given up on the middle class, and favored the super rich. But the dems were in on the bail outs to the rich. middle class has no one speaking for them. thus the tea party

Obama says he will not change current bill proposals, only consider additional ideas. Why would any clear thinking Republican want to be part of that scheme? The Repubs should just say no to his bill, period. It is ok to be the party of no when policies stink.
