Vice President Biden: Iraq “Could Be One of the Great Achievements of This Administration”
On Larry King Live last night, Vice President Joe Biden said Iraq "could be one of the great achievements of this administration. You're going to see 90,000 American troops come marching home by the end of the summer. You're going to see a stable government in Iraq that is actually moving toward a representative government."
The vice president said he’d been to Iraq 17 times and visits the country every three months or so. "I know every one of the major players in all the segments of that society" he said. "It's impressed me. I've been impressed how they have been deciding to use the political process rather than guns to settle their differences."
At the briefing today, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about Biden calling Iraq one of the great potential achievements of the Obama administration given that Biden had previously advocated that the country should be divided into thirds and split among Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis, and then-Sen. Obama opposing the surge of US troops that many experts argue helped bring stability that allowed the reconciliation process to continue.
In fact, in January 2007 then-Sen. Obama said that he was "not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence. In fact, I think it will do the reverse."
Gibbs said the achievement was "putting what was broken back together and getting our troops home, which we intend to do in August of this year."
A reporter pointed out that the Status of Forces Agreement to bring troops home was signed before the president took office.
Gibbs called that agreement "something I think that the political pressure that the president, as a then-candidate, helped to bring about."
The nation "will long debate Iraq," Gibbs said. "We will long debate whether at a very important moment in our effort to root out terrorism, particularly in Afghanistan and in that border region with Pakistan, whether we took our eye off the ball. I think historians will debate that long after we are gone." Gibbs suggested that by invading Iraq the US was "occupy(ing) a country that until we got there didn't have a single member of Al Qaida," and taking its eye off the ball.
Gibbs said that "the vice president's been deeply involved in fixing the political process there so that elections can be held and so that our troops can come home as scheduled this summer."

Heh, the administration is finally growing a pair. The only thing this administration did for Iraq was not mess up the wind down course the prior one set (finally, at an absurdly excessive cost in lives and treasure). But since they’re being forced to eat the garbage sandwich left by Bush, at least they should be able to claim the trillion dollar shriveled olive to put on top.

Success in Iraq is a great achievement of the United States Military.
__________________________________
I’m not sure how ‘successful’ the people of Iraq feel the United States attack on their country has been. Tens of thousands of Iraqis were killed. Tens of thousands more maimed. I’m sure the Iraqis are down on their knees thanking the United States for that.
Huge sections of the infrastructure of the country were destroyed including the most basic of things like water and sewage. Depleted uranium littered the country and so on.
For years now (since the invasion), the majority of Iraqis have wanted the Americans to withdraw from their country.
As it turns out, Saddam Hussein didn’t come CLOSE to killing or maiming the number of people the American invasion did.
Still, let’s hope for the best.

What I don’t understand is why the change here. Usually, Obama and Biden blame Bush for everything that they inherited – why are they suddenly not blaming Bush for inheriting American troops coming home and the prospects of seeing a stable government in Iraq that is actually moving toward a representative government.”

Along with other human rights organizations, The Documental Centre for Human Rights in Iraq has compiled documentation on over 600,000 civilian executions in Iraq. Human Rights Watch reports that in one operation alone, the Anfal, Saddam killed 100,000 Kurdish Iraqis. Another 500,000 are estimated to have died in Saddam’s needless war with Iran. Coldly taken as a daily average for the 24 years of Saddam’s reign, these numbers give us a horrifying picture of between 70 and 125 civilian deaths per day for every one of Saddam’s 8,000-odd days in power.
That gives us a range of 600,000-1,000,000 civilians killed during Saddam’s stewardship, with a median average of 97.5 Iraqi civilians killed per day during his reign, or 780,000. Over 24 years, that is a median average of 32,500 Iraqi civilians per year.
This does not include military deaths that occurred during Saddam’s “unnecessary war of choice” with Iran from 1980-88, which which accounts for roughly one million more lives on both sides, nor casualties sustained as a result of his other “unnecessary war of choice” that resulted from his invasion of Kuwait, where an estimated 100,000+ died during the first Gulf War in 1990-91.
Combining the number of civilians killed by Saddam and number of soldiers killed on all sides during his two “unnecessary wars of choice,” and we find a median estimate of 1.88 million killed during his 24-year reign, or 235 people a day.
The Iraq War started on March 20, 2003, and this study ran through June of 2006. In that time, 151,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, or 126.04 per day.
Add in 10,000 estimated terrorist/insurgent/militia dead and roughly 2762 through that time period Coalition military deaths, and you arrive at a rough total of 163762 total violent deaths, or 136.7 total violent deaths per day through June 2006.
235 violent deaths per day over Saddam’s reign including his wars.
137 violent deaths per day in Iraq over the first three years of the present war.

“The Iraq War started on March 20, 2003″
The Iraq war started in 1990. Between then and 2003 there wasn’t a week that went by without Iraq having US bombs dropped on it.
The rest of the figures cited are simply pulled out of your posterior.

“235 violent deaths per day over Saddam’s reign including his wars.
137 violent deaths per day in Iraq over the first three years of the present war.”
Even if there is consensus on these figures you posted, which I doubt, I find little consolation in the claim that we’re only responsible for a death rate of Iraqi civilians which is half of that of Saddam Hussein.

Both men voted for legislation requiring all US troops to leave by April 2008. Bush resisted their nonsense, won the war, negotiated the timetable for withdrawal, and gave all credit to the troops.
Obama inherited the victory, claims it as his own, and says nothing about either Bush or the troops.

Biden lives in an alternate universe!
Everyone who has a functioning brain,
sorry Joe, knows that the surge
instituted by President Bush and
opposed by The Senators Biden and Obama
won the Iraq War and that President
Bush signed the withdrawal agreements
with Malacki before leaving office!
Team Obama had Nothing to do with it!
It was also interesting to see how
most of the Democrats, including
the President and Vice President
supported the reappointment of
Ben Bernanke as Fed Chairman.
They also claimed that Bernanke
saved the financial system and
prevented another “Great Depression”!
If that is so then the credit for
that success also goes to President
Bush since he appointed Bernanke to
his first term!
It’s Ironic that Team Obama has been
blaming the former president for its
ineptitude since Day 1 and any success
they try to claim now in foreign policy
and domestic policy must be attributed
to their whipping boy, George W Bush!
Sorry Joe you have no accomplishments
to date!

Ask the soldiers which administration deserves credit for the success in Iraq.
Pretty sure it won’t be the current one.
They can’t even admit the surge worked.
Obama blames Bush for his own problems, the credits himself for Bush’s success.
What a pitiful little man.

They have to claim SOMETHING even if it is not theirs to claim. Hypocrits.

Obama holds an 83% approval rating from Democrats.

Too bad he only holds around 36% approval rating from the people that got him elected, the Independents ;p

Gallup has the President with a 46% approval rating from independents today.
People haven’t forgotten the mess under the last Republican president.

So THAT is what’s keeping Obama above 40%. (pretty soon it’ll be “around 40%”)
What is about to cost them Congress?
Why is Harry Reid soon to become Dems’ second sitting majority leader voted out of office?

You are right…. most have not forgotten because they think that the current oBama mess is worse than any perceived mess from the “last Republican president”.

Hey What is the big deal. When you have Obamz blaming Bush for the economy he inherited while he take credit for TARP which was passed under Bush.
IS it surprising that Hairplugs and Gibbsy would take the next step of brazen lying by blaming Bush for the problems in Iraq while taking credt for the surge and Status of FOrces Agreement also brought about by Bush, Cheney and our wonderful troops who were belittled and left to hang by the Democrats from 2006 to 2008.
Yes Hairplugs, it is a great acheivement but one won by our troops and the last administration, you creep.

It takes a special brand of cynicism and arrogance to claim credit for something that succeeded only because of measures launched by the predecessor you constantly attack and which measures (the surge) you vociferously opposed at the time.
This is appalling and shameless, even for a pompous, foolish, stupid man like Joe Biden. If his intelligence got within 1000 miles of his self-image, he’d be a genius.

Fortunately, mostly everyone in Washington, and, increasingly, everyone outside of Washington know that Biden is a blowhard and a pretender. He has a very low IQ and virtually no accomplishment after a lifetime in public office. So this is just one more bit of silliness added to a 40 year record of nonsense and pretension from a politician who is impossible to take seriously. I’d love to see Cheney debate Biden on this; Cheney could be in an iron lung and still humiliate Biden easily. Seriously, he is as empty a suit as you can find in DC, and that is really saying something.
