Top Line’ — Taking Health Care Message to Voters

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: The voting is over, but the selling has just begun, as both sides prepare to take their best cases on health care to the American people this fall. We chatted about it on ABC’s “Top Line” today with two of the top political strategists in the business: Democrat Steve Elmendorf, and Republican Carl Forti. Both agreed that — for all the attention health care has gotten over the past year — it’s likely to fade as an electoral issue as we move closer to November. “I think the message should really be jobs, jobs, job,” Forti said. “How many companies are not going to step forward, big or small, that aren’t going to create jobs because of this bill? And that’s I think what it really boils down to, and what we’re going to see really debated in the fall.” “I think it’s going to be about the economy,” said Elmendorf of the fall campaigns. “And this is obviously a crucial part of the economy, and it’s going to be about whether Democrats delivered on what they said they would do, and whether Barak Obama performed on what he said he would do when he got elected. And this is an important part of that.” Elmendorf said Democrats are prepared to lose some seats in Congress, though not necessarily because of health care: “In a midterm election, we’re going to lose some seats. Whether it will be because of this vote or because the economy’s not doing well or because they were tough districts to begin with, we’re going to lose some seats, no question.” For our “Top Line” question of the day, we asked our followers to identify the weak points in the Democratic and Republican messaging. Responded @cjar14: “GOP Weakness: Hyperbole — death panels, communism etc… total garbage.” Wrote @andylancaster: “D= Deficit reduction. The #s will tell the story. But again not for years. Bill does not hold down cost of hc. Just subsidizes it.” Watch the segment with Steve Elmendorf and Carl Forti HERE.

Money controls everything. You can’t do good for anyone if you are bankrupt. This administration shows no regard for fiscal responsibilty.

This is pathetic! The Dems have been “selling” Obamacare for a year. The American people have been clearly saying “no sale” and look what we get to pay for, anyway! The time to convince us was BEFORE they did it, not AFTER! They clearly DO NOT CARE what we think except they just want us to calm down so we don’t turn them out in November. I, for one, do not intend to calm down. I will do everything I can to remove every Democrat from office.

I am not a fan of the Healthcare plan and what it will cost. I would love to know ALL of the promises that the President made to the yes voters. How many trips will he be taking to thier States, how many fun raisers will he participate in for those votes, how many wine and dine trips were given?
We all know why the reporters will not ask that question, but I wish they would and put that in prime time.

I am filled with rage and anger and outrage at the Dems who sold the Delta Smelts down the river just to get 2 votes for healthcare. Right now the precious smelts are being chopped and shredded in giant pumps just so some smelly humans have free health care. Where is PETA? What next, the polar bears sacrificed for immigration reform or the whales traded for a carbon tax? It is so sad.

Perhaps Obama can celebrate America’s fist “Dependence Day” by selling it to the people by passing a hat to collect money in the crowd.

I don’t understand what you are so angry about. What was the alternative? What should happen to all the people who are unemployed and can’t afford health care? What about the Seniors? What about the people refused health care because of a pre-existing condition?
Honestly, what is wrong with this bill? They had a financial statement that was prepared by both parties and it demonstrated that this health care bill would actually save our country money?
You must be one of the above $200,000 income level people who’s going to lose money out of your pocket to help the less fortunate.
Get over it. The gravy train ride is over. If the lower and middle class have to suffer it’s your turn now.

common sense would tell you to bring it to the voters before you pass an unpopular bill into law for ego driven reasons.
