Santorum: Money Will Not Defeat Obama, Ideas Will
Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
Tell Al Hunt – yes, you can outlaw these exotic investments – derivatives – and this should happen now, along with putting Glass-Steagall back into law and put into law an end to bailouts completely!

Why can’t good journalism do their homework…provide historical context and dig underneath simple arguments and highlight consequences some of these simple prescriptions. unfortunately the presidential rhetoric and public debate which shapes the legislation fails to mention a number of issues like
the very poor performance of existing regulatory authorities, fails to mention that the downside of legislating against scale in financial services is higher cost to consumers and business for financial services, and many other important factors. There is lots of talk about conflict of interest which I find supremely ironic given the politicians sponsoring much of this flawed legislation are the definition of “conflicted”.
Unfortunately, I think we are headed to another highly flawed legislative solution to a complicated prolem. The result will be much more inefficient(meaning costly to us) regulation and less US competitiveness in world markets. As a small business exec, it is increasingly easier to high overseas than in the US as a result of health care, administrative burdens and financial services costs.

Lets remember when we talk about arizona we are talking about illegal immigration. If you are a law abiding citizen you should have no reason not to show your id if a police officer asks. They are here to protect and serve us .I thank them for it

Jake Tapper is good but no George we have nothing aganist Jake I’m sure he is a good person. I and my wife would have perfered that ABC have Terry Moran anchor This Week the rating would be higher with Terry.

Good show this week there was balance for once in a long time.
Posted by: D Collins | May 2, 2010, 10:13 am 10:13 am
Could you have a more lopsided panel????
Who above said this was balanced – good grief.
George Will can just shake his head at their uninformed comments.
I thought Bill Maher considered himself a comedian. Oh maybe that’s just what he sound like -oops.
Posted by: H.Bryer | May 2, 2010, 10:39 am 10:39 am
The panel today was horrific, balance is one thing but Al Sharpton, and Bill Maher as informed and thoughtful commentary? This is the best ABC can do? How the mighty have fallen. Perhaps you could bring in Jerry Springer and Geraldo to elevate the discourse next week?
Posted by: B Boyer | May 2, 2010, 10:49 am 10:49 am
Why on earth do you have Al Sharpton and Bill Maher, I would rather see Abbott and Costello, at least they knw what their talking about.
Wose on First?

Hey stacey i’m Don from Houston ,texas i’v been pull over more then once in my life time and every time i was ask for my ID and was even taken to jail once because i didn’t have it on me and the officer told me donnie we take people to jail who don’t have their ID on them and he did so whats your point?.

Worst roundtable ever. How about some balance? How is a bunch of ultra-liberals yelling at GWill without giving him any opportunity to respond supposed to be enlightening?
What happened to This Week…
Posted by: JF | May 2, 2010, 11:14 am 11:14 am
Brasil consumed an average of just under 2.6 million barrels of oil per DAY in 2010 – nice comment Bill Maher – you were wrong, as usual…
Posted by: joconnor | May 2, 2010, 11:16 am 11:16 am
George Will needs to get his facts straight. There are not large numbers of birds killed by wind turbines everyday. And if that’s the best argument against them that you can offer, you need to do a little more homework and not rely on your adlib skills. Wrong, wrong, wrong…
Posted by: Bob Coleman | May 2, 2010, 11:31 am 11:31 am
BRAZIL has achieved energy self-sufficiency through the use of alternatives, such as ehtanol.
However, it still produces quite a lot of offshore oil.
Posted by: tmiked | May 2, 2010, 11:32 am 11:32 am
Please keep Katrina off – she’s such a clearly angry person that all she cares to do is attack.
Who chose this panel – why would I ever listen to Sharpton about oil or anything for that matter. Didn’t he have a woman bring a false indictment against a person in NYC crying rape; that she later said that she made up. Come on you guys want to be taken seriously and this is the panel.
Posted by: Pat | May 2, 2010, 11:34 am 11:34 am
Well ABC you have finally lost me! At my age I don’t need to upset myself on Sunday mornings. I will certainly miss George Will. But when you come up with idiots like Katrina, Bill and Al, I don’t need to waste my time. Not only did I turn it off, I changed my DVR setting. Adios!
Posted by: Tom | May 2, 2010, 11:51 am 11:51 am
Today’s show is probably the last I will watch due to the caliber and balance of round table guests – comedian, uninformed liberal and clergy [Sharpton who I respect was the most informed].
Posted by: VTeofilo | May 2, 2010, 11:58 am 11:58 am
Mathew Dowd and George Will got bashed today . and they deserved it republican racist
Posted by: Gary | May 2, 2010, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm
Just enforce the existing law. I think Rev. Sharpton perhaps should think about his reply to Will when he pointed uout that ID’s by everyone are checked at a state capitol in Fla., my point is then why aren’t visitors to the US at the border then enforcing the type of visa issued as Wil had suggested BEFORE they cross the border into the US so we don’t have this issue. Other countries enforce their laws. I would have liked to heard Mr. Sharpton and Will discuss that out. Going to Airzonia in support of illegal Immigrants I don’t agree with, humanitarian well being I support.
But, come into the US legally like so many others have done…Including stars that attend rallies. I’m sure they have gone through the process of becoming legal immigrants.
Posted by: ed | May 2, 2010, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm
Funny about the protest and rallies. When chants are made for the cause, 1/2 of them are in Spanish and not English and as well their sign boards are also…well..I don’t speak or read Spanish…I am a US Citizen that speaks and reads English. If you want more people to understand then try to communicate in the language of the Country you want to legally live in.

How about adding Rosie O’Donnell and Sean Penn to The Roundtable next week? But you will need to change the name of the show from “This Week” to “This is Weak.” You just lost a viewer, this time for good.
Posted by: David | May 2, 2010, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm
It was an interesting show today. But I felt bad for Bill Maher. He was obviously in over his head and thoroughly embarrassed himself. Maher is articulate, but he truly is a know-nothing.
Posted by: Mark in mid-town | May 2, 2010, 1:06 pm 1:06 pm
Bill Maher clearly demonstrated today that he does not have the level of intelligence required to be on “This Week”! Maher insulted your audience today and ABC News should be quick to apologize for his racist comment or risk losing a significant amount of your viewership. What would Tim Russert Do???
Posted by: Bill Stevens | May 2, 2010, 1:09 pm 1:09 pm
This was the worst roundtable discussion ever!!! As a moderate I have always enjoyed this part of the show back to David Brinkly. It was guests on the left which were the embarrassment. Given all the interuptions and tasteless attacks on George Will it decended to a low I have not seen on this otherwise intellegent show. If I’d wanted to watch brawl rather than a news program I counld have turned to Fox and watched Jaun Williams get beaten up.
Posted by: Peter Ridout | May 2, 2010, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm
Bill Maher is a joke–what’s a comedian doing on your show?–making fun of thoughtful discussions!! You insult us!
Posted by: juliewhitney | May 2, 2010, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm
This was one of the most entertaining episodes of This Week I have seen! Jake Tapper should be the permanent host; nevertheless, I will continue watching as long as George Will is on there. Sharpton and Mahr are much more entertaining (and much less annoying) than Donaldson, Brazile, Roberts, etc. Sam only regurgitates liberal talking points he hears on the news. Donna is Obama’s apologist.
Posted by: S Purvis | May 2, 2010, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm
Hey Racist Maher….Check your facts before you come on a show like this… BRAZIL doesn’t use oil….IDIOT!!
They are ranked 7th in the world in oil consumption. Just running your mouth on on HBO is one thing but not on this show. And typical racist…when asked what AZ should do, you come back with no comment…GREAT ANWSER and typical racist response…Just complain and have no solution…IDIOT!!
Posted by: Bob T | May 2, 2010, 4:10 pm 4:10 pm
Worst roundtable every. George Will gets outnumbered almost every week. Bill Mahar only has to speak to prove his lack of intelligence and tolerance. I’m tired of “Republican” being used as a synonym for racist. This happens all over TV. Katrina vanden Heuvel is the most annoying person on the planet. Please have more balance or let George Will speak more.
Posted by: Jane | May 2, 2010, 5:31 pm 5:31 pm
I am shocked at your round table panel today….I am a highly informed regular viewer and look to your show for solid information. This was a joke. Bill Maher’s comments were outrageous and fine for shock TV, but not for a serious news show. I am a democrat, but am offended that he said all racists are in the Republican party. Such uninformed, inflammatory rhetoric does not advance serious discussion of important issues. If you continue with panels of entertainers or self promoters instead of serious journalists, I will never watch your show again.
Posted by: Tom | May 2, 2010, 8:54 pm 8:54 pm
I can’t believe they allow an idiot hack like Maher on a legitimate news show. He makes sam donaldson look like a genius. It’s bad enough rich girls like katrina can buy their way onto serious news outlets. Now we have to suffer the clowns as well?
Posted by: Corinne Will | May 2, 2010, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm
I enjoy watching your show weekly but had to turn it off because the of 3 ring circus today. Sharpton, Vandenhuvel, and Maher against George Will is not what I would call a debate. Tapper let things get out of hand very quickly. There are a lot of people in this country that live between the east coast and the west coast so lets start hearing more from these people. Geore Will deserves a bonus or apology or both. I hope “This Week” is more balanced next week.
Posted by: pmain | May 2, 2010, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm
I have been a regular viewer of This Week and have appreciated the balanced and respectful set of guests… Until today. You have one more shot with me. Don’t tilt the show too liberal or conservative especially without a counter balance. 3 ultra liberals and 2 moderate conservatives is MSNBC like. Unfortunate and sad for such a well respected program.
Posted by: Bill | May 2, 2010, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm
My husband and I watch This Week most Sunday mornings. We look for intelligent debate. May 2 was turned into a circus and very offensive. Rev Sharpton preached his political agenda…with disregard to facts or other guests speaking. Bill Maher was a fool. My family hails from Detroit. They are a long line of “buy American” Democrats. My grandfather was a (Democrat)racist. My parents (Democrats) are more politically correct in their speaking, but still racist in some of their thinking. I don’t believe that their political party affiliation makes them more racist, but rather their lack of understanding of people. Maher needs to check his facts about the profile of a racist. The profile is not related to political party affiliation. C’mon ABC you can do much better than that May 2 show.

JAKE, JAKE…..it’s NOT the Sam Donaldson show…… You could be great if you could manage this guys like George or Tim Russert did. But I’ll watch until they replace you with the left wing nut Amanpour. That will be my last show.

I just switched to CNN. If you continue to have Liz Cheney on your show, I will continue to turn off. She is a horrible talking point. I can stomach George Will, barely, with his pompous right wing ‘better than thou’ attitude, but I cannot handle Cheney. See you for the Sunday Funnies.

Jake,
That was sad. Emanuel did not answer 1 of your questions. Not one. He said “Let’s walk thru it…” It was “Let’s walk around it…” And you let him.

It is interesting that everyone is up in arms that BP CEO Hayward spent time on his yacht, yet no one thinks Obama going to a baseball game also shows an indifference to the gulf disaster. No wonder people living in the Gulf States believe no one is in charge!

The Role of U.S. Government:
Republican philosophy: The U.S. Constitution and our Democracy are in place to protect Capitalism (i.e., the capitalist’s interests those who are owners of production, services etc.)
Democrat philosophy: The Constitution and Capitalism are in place to protect our Democracy (i.e., including the worker’s interests those who produce products and services etc.)
I am a Democrat. I believe that anyone who is allowed to work in the U.S. and pay taxes has an equal right to protection under the law whether they own the business (approx. 11 percent – Data from the Federal Reserve) or work for these owners (approx. 76 percent) or are unemployed (approx. 10 percent. or more when you include those who are not eligible for unemployment benefits from which our statistics originate). We are a representative democracy when white male owners the capitalists were the only ones allowed to vote the laws of government represented them. Today all citizens are allowed to vote, 86 percent or more are not business owners but workers so the laws should reflect a representation of them as well.
While the above-mentioned Republican philosophy may have been the model in place when the “founding fathers” represented the voting majority, not since Abraham Lincoln, and later all- inclusive with the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, have these ideals represented the majority of U.S. Americans. Today the laws must reflect the “founding fathers” overriding ideals that the U.S. Constitution and Capitalism be protectors of our Democracy.

AZ should not usurp the Federal government’s right to protect our borders but instead AZ should sue the Federal government for all losses incured due the lack of border security. AZ should unite with other border states to push agressively for immigration reform and enforcement – including punishing those who illegally hire undicumented workers.

IWAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TAPPERS INTERVIEW WITH RHAM EMMANUEL. NOT ONCE DID JAKE CHALLENGE MR.EMMANUELS’ TALKING POINTS ON THE ADMINISTRATIONS SLOW RESPONSE TO THE OIL SPILL. PRETTY MUCH A 15 MINUTE FREEBIE FOR THE ADMINISTRATION TO BLAME THE REPUBLICANS FOR EVERYTHING,
WHY NOT ONE DIRECT UESTION ABOUT WHETHER SPECIFIC HIGH LEVEL JOBS WERE OFFERED BY EMMANUEL…WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LOGICAL STAFFER TO HAVE TO SIGN OFF ON SUCH AN OFFER, A SHAM OF AN INTERVIEW

RE Race: We can’t have a real dialogue on race relations in this country so long as one group is constantly vilified and the other refuses to recognize and acknowledge its own racist elements.
RE Republican vs Democrat philosophies: Where did E.D. get this info from? I haven’t yet found such philosophies espoused in either the Federalist or the Anti-Federalist papers. The issues were never about capitalism, but about individual freedom and large or small central government.

The Labor Dept Stats don’t agree with Geithner on job growth. Geithner was very crital of the bonuses paid by companies that received bailout, but he never mentioned Fannie and Freddie. Their executives were dishonest and still got bonuses. Remember Zoe Baird who was nominated for Attoney General but had to withdraw because she hadn’t paid SSA tax for her Nanny. What has happened to standards for ethics and character?
