Heidi Montag Spoofs Her Plastic Surgeries To Push For Financial Reform

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: With Congress currently debating a proposal to form a new federal agency to protect consumers from the perils of Wall Street, Hollywood’s rich and famous are weighing in with their opinions. In a new ad on the “Funny or Die” website, reality TV star Heidi Montag says the need for financial regulatory reform is real, even if her face is not. Montag, who last year underwent 10 plastic surgeries, describes how aggressive practices by credit card companies can leave Americans drowning in debt. Watch it here. “If you’re a reality TV star, chances are good that you’ll one day have plastic surgery,” Montag says in the ad. “It’s also a for sure thing that you’ll have to pay for that surgery with credit cards because you’ve spent all your “I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here” money on expensive purses, tiny dogs, and healing braces for your husband. With hidden fees and standard interest rate increases, that $11,000 jaw line can end up costing you upwards of $50,000!” Therefore Montag, who starred on MTV’s “The Hills”, urges Congress to create a consumer protection agency to shield Americans from credit card companies. “Being in debt for elective surgery is bad enough, but when I think about the thousands of Americans whose only method of paying for food is their credit cards it’s enough to make me cry without moving my new face,” she says. “That’s why I support the creation of a consumer agency to help protect average citizens and reality stars alike.” “Am I smiling?” she then asks. “You guys, am I smiling?” “A consumer agency,” Montag argues, “will stop banks and credit card companies from being such sleazy jerks. Call your senator and tell them to hold big Wall Street banks accountable and to fight for strong consumer protection.” The two senators who hold the key to the reform movement are Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alab., the Senate Banking Committee’s chairman and ranking Republican, respectively. “If you really want to get specific, call senators Chris Dodd and Richard Shelby,” Montag says as superimposed head shots of the two lawmakers appear behind her in a bathtub. “You’ll listen to this part because I’m in the tub.” The new ad was directed by Ron Howard, who counts “Apollo 13″, “Backdraft”, and “The Da Vinci Code” among his other notable works. It comes on the heels of another hit “Funny or Die” spoof about financial regulatory reform: last week’s ad featuring Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, Dana Carvey, Dan Aykroyd, Darrell Hammond, and Chevy Chase impersonating ex-presidents. — Matthew Jaffe

Um… I support the movement for a strong, independent consumer-protection agency (Team Elizabeth Warren!)but I have to say that I’m not finding these ads particularly good or funny. There’s some clever self-mockery, I guess. (Does anybody in favor of consumer protection reform like these things? Just curious. I’ve seen better on other topics at funny or die.)
