In Weekly Address, Obama Changes Focus to Financial Regulatory Reform

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports:

President Obama did not use his weekly address to make a last pitch on health care reform but rather he made the case for financial regulatory reform, which the Senate Banking Committee will start debating on Monday.

“After months of bipartisan work, Sen. Chris Dodd and his committee have offered a strong foundation for reform in line with the proposal I previously laid out and in line with the reform bill passed by the House,” Obama said in the address.

He praised Dodd’s bill for its greater scrutiny of large financial firms and for updating the rules of the road to prevent banks from engaging in risky behaviors.

He also touted the inclusion of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which he has long advocated for. He said he will not accept a final bill without such an independent agency.

“For these banking reforms to be complete, for these reforms to meet the measure of the crisis we’ve just been through, we need a consumer agency to advocate for ordinary Americans and help enforce the rules that protect them,” he said. “That’s why I won’t accept any attempts to undermine the independence of this agency.  And I won’t accept efforts to create loopholes for the most egregious abusers of consumers, from payday lenders to auto finance companies to credit card companies.“

Noting the agency has been a “source of contention” for financial firms and some Republicans, the president called out House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

“The Republican leader in the House reportedly met with a top executive of one of America’s largest banks and made thwarting reform a key part of his party’s pitch for campaign contributions,” the president said. “And this week, the allies of banks and consumer finance companies launched a multimillion dollar ad campaign to fight against the proposal.”

President Obama called it “air support” for lobbyists trying to block the agency.

Boehner struck back in a statement from his spokesman, Michael Steel: “The president is wrong on the facts, and it should be beneath him to use the official weekly address to make inaccurate partisan attacks.  The American people are asking, where are the jobs? But once again, Washington Democrats are offering partisan jabs rather than solutions.”

Nevertheless, urging senators who support reforms to “remain strong,” the president said they should resist any pressure and “stand up” for their constituents.

“And I promise to use every tool at my disposal to see these reforms enacted,” he said, “to ensure that the bill I sign into law reflects not the special interests of Wall Street, but the best interests of the American people.”

Ah…Dodd just recently said he was going it alone without Republican’s. What bipartisanship?
Besides how is this going to help job growth?
I would like to see finiancial reform, specifically put the Glass-Steagle act of 1929 back in place. This would require investment banking and comercial banking(loans and deposits) to operate seperately so consumers won’t lose all their savings when their bank makes a poor investment.
But still, I thought the president was going to piviot to jobs, not financial reform?

bobtherepublican – Seriously? You would put jobs over reform? Sure, let’s continue what did this nasty recession (they are) and have one even worse. Then we’ll worry about some jobs. They need to be doing both. I don’t trust any of them to do financial reform like we probably need because both parties are about the same in this area.

Focusing like a laser beam.
He said ObamaCare is about the character of America.
More like Obama’s lack of character.
Maybe Obama should try to pass something on its merit instead of using bribes.

.
Its never been about jobs. After one year that has become painfully obvious. oBama and his democrat cohorts are running out of time to nationalize as much as they can before they get the boot in November.
.
Its been said that if you look for signs of life at the atomic level you will never find anything. But, take a step back and you will be amazed at what you see. So, while tierra, progressive mama, ryan c, etc. all fling their monkey-poo at everyone here debating specific points about different policies, take a step back and look at what oBama has done so far. Nationalize banks, nationalize car companies, trying to nationalize insurance companies, trying to nationalize student loans and therefore more control over higher education, controlling energy production through the crap and tax scam, etc.
.
Ask yourself, what the heck is a takeover of the student loan program doing in a health care reform bill? oBama sat in Jeramiah Wrights “church” for 20 years. He knew exactly what Wright was preaching and by the looks of the crap he is pushing through… he was paying very close attention for those 20 years.

If financial “reform” goes the way healthcare “reform” did, we’ll all be forced to buy toxic mortgages from JP Morgan. And Obama will be telling us it’s “historic reform.”

I am not fond of politicians, but I do not get you Obama lovers. Obama is a radical who plans to convert America into some kind of European socialists country. I agree there are rich people who need to get slapped now and then, but to take money away from nearly every one so the current poor people will have what the rich do, and not have to work for it. You wanted Obama, now we are all stuck with him. Take a long look at what he is doing and what he has done. How many lies has he told?

Posted by: James L. | March 20, 2010, 10:37 am 10:37 am

He is not switching his focus, he is just making a statement that the republicans at first wanted to work with Dodd and now once again, have changed their minds and are supporting what they really wanted is “no reform on banks” which was what we had during their administration and which caused this recession. I am happy the president is standing up to Boehner who is a whimpering fool and sneaky. He pontificated things and then refused to work on them. Typical republicanism of No…let’s not work with Obama …let’s do everything we can to make him fail and look bad. Dodd will put sanctions on the banks although they are supporting the republicans because they are against sanction. You will see much banking support of the reps. in the fall. As for jobs, President Obama has just signed a jobs program and by he way after working on a jobs bill the seven who worked on this walked away. This health care bill is also another way to provide jobs. Let’s stop being petty. Obama is finally standing up to all of them. The gloves are off…he tried being nice and it got him nothing and as for bi-partisship..the republicans never intended to work with him so let’s stop b.s.ing.

Who does Obama think he is fooling?
Only the naive and hopelessly devoted still believe him.
Obama is corporate owned and controlled.
And it’s his big rich fatcat campaign donors that he is really looking out for.
Who did he make a backdoor sleazy deal with months ago? The hospital lobby and Big PhRma.
And the result is ObamaCare–30 million new customers guaranteed to benefit the HC industry.
Is it any wonder their stocks are skyrocketing as OCare passes?
Obama is shameful.

NO! We need the non-thinkers for their votes. As long as we can keep the percentage of America’s wealth flowing into the wealthy but can fool those non-thinkers into fighting the “redistribution of wealth to the poor” we’ll be all right. And as long as we have people thinking up clever, catchy words and phrases like “death panels, “drill baby drill”, “socialism”, “leftist”, “loss of freedom”, etc, that don’t apply at all but appeal to the non-thinkers, we wealthy will do just fine!

I think JoetheDoctor hit the nail on the head in that we do need to eliminate a lot of the uneducated riff-raff in our party but I believe we need to wait until December to do so. Many of these people associate themselves with our party but are the same people that serve us at fine dining establishments and landscape our estates. Some of them are over-reaching and need to be knocked back down to their rung of the ladder. Until then, lets crush this socialist health plan!!!

In this instance Boehner is blatantly telling the bankers and payday loan sharks that they can buy Republicans to fight for their corporate profits. I would rather they fight for American consumers instead. But, I’m just a consumer and not a banker or payday loan shark. If I were a loan shark I’d probably be cheering Boehner.

It is so sad to watch as Obama and his henchman force America over the cliff. Also watching so many Americans believing it is a good thing. Many are soon going to realize that the biggest problem we have as a country is our Government and their big expensive take-over bills are only going to make it much worse than it is.

Posted by: Bandera Scout | March 20, 2010, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

The leaders of the Republican party have been completely brainwashed by the lobbyists from Wall Street and health insurance companies. It’s easy to brainwash a Republican senator or Congressmen: just give him money and he will roll over on the American voter in a heartbeat. Part II is to use lies, smears and talk-show accomplices like Beck to pound the eardrums of the uninformed with more lies: Death Panels, Birthers, Doc Fix, etc. What will it take for them to see the truth: losing their health care coverage or the life of a loved one, or their life savings. And then watch them run to the government for a bail out.

What Obama is saying is that Wall St executives will get more gigantic bonuses in the future in the next stimulus package.

Posted by: drjohn | March 20, 2010, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm

Boehner has no honor. If anyone can name one thing he has championed that helped American citizens instead of corporate lobbyists I will eat my hat in the middle of Main Street. But Boehner did help pump the defecit by 1.9 Trillion dollars, with Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. Oh, he also acted as a cheerleader for an unnecessary war in Iraq that cost another Trillion dollars and the lives of 4,500 Americans.

Every poll now shows that majority disapprove Obama. Every poll also shows even greater majority disagree with the way Obama and crew are handling (manipulating) the health care debate. Yet he, and the mainstream media, are trying to silence the majority. Be scared. Be very scared. Legalizing illegals isn’t going to solve the problem, like he his hoping it to. It will forever divide this country.

Here is a better idea…. if you are one of the non-producers on public assistance you don’t vote. The producers are tired of the non-producers voting in DEMOCRAT politicians who are oh-so generous with the producers money. Problem is, the producers money is starting to run out.

Now lets hear your excuse about why obama has run up the deficit 2 trillion dollars in 421 days which makes Bush look like a frugal spender only raising it 2 1/2 trillion in 8 years. I know you will blame it on Bush that is the easy way to justify incompetence.

First of all Mark, your figures are wrong. And also, you must be mistaken calling what you’re talking about the ‘deficit’ because the TOTAL deficit for 2010 tops out at $1.35 trillion – making it impossible for Obama to run up the deficit $2 trillion, since the last Bush deficit was already at .9 trillion dollars.
So, you must be talking about the national debt – and even then you’re wrong. Check the Bureau of Public Debt, Department of the Treasury web site – you’ll find Bush increase the national debt by 4.9 trillion dollars.
So right away Mark, your ability to deliver worthwhile information is pretty suspect.
Second, you seem to ignore the economic collapse that happened on the Bush watch – and you seem completely ignorant of the effects of a major economic collapse on deficits and budgets. Study it some time.

And we’ll slap Obama and his fellow Dems in November… and then slap Obama again in 2012. This egomaniac clown must go in 2012.

Look Up the History of Medical Insurance. Up until we all had JOBS, we did not have INSURANCE.
Insurance has been and shall always be a luxury. It just so happens that we all believe we are entitled to have everything handed to us on this silver platter.
WRONG! Get off you butts and find work.
I don’t believe that anyone is due anything and we as a nation would be better off if we closed shop, sealed the gates and took care of our own here at home.
I worked for OBAMA, I Voted for this man.. and he has dissapointed me!
Obama has broken every promise since he took office.
Where was the transparency, the cspan cameras, the GIVING AMERICA back to the people…NO BACK ROOM DEALS…
Well pay no attention to the man behind the curtain……
Well… We wont get fooled again in 2010!

tierra, the ecomomy was already
on the free fall. Remember Bush tried
boosting the economy by giving checks
out quickly, (hmmmm socialistic???),
but with gas prices hovering at $4.00 a
gallon and higher, all that money went into
filling the car tanks! And guess where the
money funneled to… the sheiks and kings
in the sand, you know, the ones that finance
the bombings around the world! Living with those
devils is no easy task.

The Party of No will find out tomorrow how successful it has been. They have tried to paint President Obama as a weakling but are finding community organizers know something about organizing a community.
I think President Obama is doing is supporters proud.

This is the best bill that a corrupted Congress-full of D’s and R’s can come up with in 100 years. Pass this bill and then amend the constitution to ensure that Congress and the states may prohibit corporations and unions from spending their funds on political activities. Then an uncorrupted government may revisit this legislation and plug the holes, without losing the hard won gains that are so long overdue.

As I said: typical GOP tactics. When you ain’t got nothin’ (and particularly when you get caught being stupid), change the subject.

As I’ve said: typical Democrat tactics. When you have a ‘doc fix’ that will cause the healthcare bill to be in the red instead of reducing the deficit, just sweep it under the rug and pull it out later. There’s no point in discussing the lies being told about the financials of this healthcare bill until it passes. THEN the American public can know. I guess, in the immortal words of Bill Clinton, “it depends on what ‘is’ is.” Bunch of liars.
And as far as ‘when you get caught being stupid’, look no further than VP Joe Biden. He makes the 3 Stooges look like Rhodes scholars.

Vote for health care bill! Everyone needs it.

Posted by: charlie | March 20, 2010, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

What about fixing Medicare first..the government can’t seem to get Medicare right who wants what they are offering…they just cut Medicare AGAIN..and if the system was so great why do the elderly need a secondary insurance to cover almost everything..I don’t care what idiot is in office and what fool is saying they didn’t vote..If the system is working now..and they are about to cut doctors 22 1/2 percent that is why doctors are dropping medicare left and right..What doctor is taking what they are offering? Doctors are currently looking into a pay as you go system so it wouldn’t matter what insurance anyone had..because the average person that comes in the office is not worth billing any insurance company.

Posted by: Laura | March 20, 2010, 10:09 pm 10:09 pm

Tad.. most middle class Americans working full time jobs and have little or no health care coverage. Not to mention retirees that retire and have 5 years before they can go on medicare. Premiums have become so high that most middle class workers can’t afford it.Even when the company they work for contributes. Farmers can’t afford their premiums and many drop their insurance because of it. And those that can scratch together $600 -$1000 a month find themselves under insured with astronomical out of pocket expenses and co-pays. And if a company you work for drops health care coverage and you then have to go out and purchase it, you better hope you don’t have a pre-existing condition like cancer or a sick child, cause you won’t get any insurance. You can be denied for something as simple as a mole removal. We need health care reform for all Americans. And this is a start.

Vote your objections in 2010/2012…

Posted by: Parallax View | March 20, 2010, 10:53 pm 10:53 pm

All,
To all of you that are so skeptical, have you researched any of the information you hear or read on your own? For those of you that say this is a government takeover, your entirely mistaken. Reform means to change what is, not create something that isn’t. This bill will kick the Health Insurance companies in the FACE!!! You have to have auto insurance, think about yourself as a car it will break down you will need repair why shouldn’t you be required to have health insurance. Anything man makes will break, same with this bill and the one before it and with all others but you have to realize we can change our government to meet the needs of now and the future. In time when loopholes are found we can correct them, when corporations are respectful to their employees we can grow prosperously. However when corporations are the ones who can run amuck without any oversight and they create a depression you say the government should have stopped them. However you were the ones that said we need to deregulate. Yet you all believe your government is at fault. Your wrong, the person who you elected is wrong by not listening to you but the lobbyist. Yet you voted that way by not doing any research of your own, you let Glen Beck or Rush Limbaugh lead you to a desert when they said they were taking you to an oasis. For all of you that want to get Medicare or Social Security you shouldn’t get it, because you are wanting to continue the statuesque. Both of those bills were hard to pass and you enjoy it now so you need to just give it up because you aren’t willing to fight for those that can’t get health insurance. Yet you have no problem helping someone outside our borders but helping someone in our borders is a sin. You all should take a good look in the mirror and when you look at yourself, imagine a maggot traveling in your face because we all have to die so let’s have a good time living!!

yeah… all that money……. it’s just too bad about all those kids who got killed in Iraq for nothing, but hey, like Cheney said… deficits don’t matter..
what would have the republicans done in Jan 2009?…. let the banks fail, attack Iran, tax cuts
why does anybody believe that all of the republicans who voted with Bush would suddenly have a change of heart and policy if they would have won in 2008.

PO’d commented…what would have the republicans done in Jan 2009?…. let the banks fail, attack Iran, tax cuts…
The same thing…
The Stimulus that Obama passed was already in the works under Bush before Obama ever took office that’s why it passed so quickly and with so much Republican support…
It didn’t matter who would have become President in 2008… There was going to be a Stimulus in 2009 to bailout the banks…

John Boehner–the Bozo of the House. To all people who oppose health care –read the facts and understand the bill before you slam the bill—that is if you even know how to read which I highly doubt!!!!!

theafalco200 Said: “The Stimulus that Obama passed was already in the works under Bush before Obama ever took office that’s why it passed so quickly and with so much Republican support…”
=======================================
Duhh…there were “2″ stimulus packages:
(1) The “Wall Street Bailout”, also known as the EMERGENCY ECONOMIC STABILIZATION ACT OF 2008 –> Dreamed up by Bush’s Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson, and signed by G.W. Bush on October 3rd, 2008.
AND
(2) The “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009″, signed by President Obama on February 17th 2009.

It is amazing that every time the president speaks, someone in the republican party takes offense. Perhaps they should pay more attention with their own rather than worrying about what the president is saying.

Government never fixes problems as well as private industry which is based on competition. Medicare and social security are insolvent, even before Obama wants to take another $400 billion away from medicare. Politicians have stolen all the money out of social security. Why? Because when they give away money for pork barrel projects, they get re-elected. So which would you rather have? A system based on the greed for power, getting re-elected or a system based on providing a service at a lower cost, better service than your competitors? Sure, the insurance lobby has gone to congress and benefited to our detriment. That needs to stop. When there are misdeeds occurring in the private sector like Bernie Madoff, at least some go to jail. Unlike certain congressmen who just keep “serving” despite their corruption. The ethics committee in congress is a joke. Wait til you pro healthcare bill folks pay for 4 years and receive no benefit from it. What are the chances that congress won’t siphon that money off to get re-elected? I gotta bridge to sell if you believe that….

What happened to the campaign he ran….oh yeah, now I remeber…..he got elected. I hope it passes so we can stop the little boy p contest by the Dem vs Rep groups. How about doing this for the people, we do not care who gets stuff done that benefits the majority of the people as a nation. We are Americans, we are not as cohesive as other nations. The Rep do not want to lose face and the false stuff they say and the tone of their words is shameful to me as an American. People shouting bad remarks over this bill in the Washington building is very hurtful to all Americans,

Posted by: skip | March 21, 2010, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

This bill needs to pass. This country is too rich to ignor 30 million people without insurance. Just remember to vote the repub’s out in November because it’s plain to see that are for the richest 1% of the public.

Wow, most folks here don’t seem to understand what financial regulation means.
It will be a bunch of rules to prevent the banking system collapse that our country just barely survived and which caused banks around the world to falter.
(We had good financial rules put in place after the financial collapse during the Great Depression. Those rules worked well until Republicans started weakening them in the 90′s with legislation pushed by their friends in the banking industry.)
For anyone to object to having strong federal legislation to regulate banking, they would be saying they want a repeat of the banking meltdown we just had. Anyone want to raise their hands for that?
