Obama Prepared to Move Agenda Forward With or Without GOP
ABC News’ David Chalian Reports: In the aftermath of President Obama’s health care victory without a single Republican vote, White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod still holds out hope for some bipartisan agreement on future policy proposals, but said President Obama is prepared to move forward on his big ticket agenda items with or without Republican votes. “I haven’t given up on Republicans. I do believe that there are Republicans of good conscience who want to work together on issues, we want to continue to do that,” Axelrod told us on ABC News’ “Top Line.” “The fact is that the healthcare bill was informed by some of the discussions that we had with Republicans in the Senate. I’m encouraged that some of the Republicans who voted against the bill already are sending out memos claiming credit for pieces of it which tells you something,” he wryly added.
Both Axelrod and his boss have publicly mused recently about their inability to change the entrenched partisan culture that has gripped much of Washington, DC. Whether bipartisan agreement can be found on the next major domestic policy initiative with which Congress grapples remains to be seen. Financial regulatory reform emerged from Sen. Dodd’s Banking Committee just with Democratic support, though Chairman Dodd remains hopeful his Republican colleagues will continue to work at it with him. Axelrod made clear that invitation exists from the Obama administration too, but he sounded far from optimistic about the chances of a bipartisan financial regulatory reform package. “We’re certainly going to invite them to participate with us,” Axelrod said of the Republicans. “There’s enormous pressure from the financial industry, huge army of lobbyists on the Hill. The Republican Party has generally been very responsive to that lobby and one hopes that some of them will break loose here and say we can’t allow the country to get into the same situation we were in the last few years because of the reckless speculation on Wall Street,” he added. “Our goal,” Axelrod continued, “is to move the country forward. We’re willing to work with anybody who’s willing to work with us to get that done. But what we can’t do is sit still in the face of great challenges because one party has decided to sit on the sidelines,” he said. When asked about lessons learned from the bruising partisan battles of the last year, Axelrod said “persistence” is the guiding principle. “I think persistence, which is a hallmark of this president and everybody should recognize that by now, is the key thing. We’re going to continue on every issue to try and work with folks on the other side as well as Democrats to solve problems. Yes we had an intense debate about healthcare but from where we sit that doesn’t mean that we can’t agree on other things,” he said. “So I think our view is to keep plugging away and ultimately I believe more and more Republicans are going to come to the conclusion that, that it is better politics to work on the problems facing this country than it is to work on the reelection process every single day,” he added.

Is Congress Sounding Dumber?
President Obama will have to go forward with or without the cooperation of these moronic acting republicans. They made the decision to oppose President Obama and stir up hate against him instead. That does not indicate that these republicans are likely to act more professionally or concerned about America than they have been up to now. Republican leaders are not doing anything good for America and that will probably not change.

Regardless of the retoric the President and his staff has shown over the last year that the Republicans exist only as a talking point to be used to fire up his base and will only make the attempt at offering a hand to them in a bipartisian fashion if public opinion turns against him as agressively as it did in January and February of this year.
Notice he didn’t actually sit down with Republicans, on Healthcare Reform, until the support for the bill in full dropped below 40% in early February.
It will be no different in the future. He will steamroll the country until his poll numbers drop to abysmal lows, then he will place enough moderate ideas into his bills to gain a few more points back and will try to ram another bill on the agenda through.

David Frum ( A GOP Speechwriter and Strategist) was canned by AEI, a conservative think group, for questioning the Republican’s, “Obama’s Waterloo”, scorched earth, just say no to everything policies !!! He wrote Bush’s “Axis of evil” speech !!! He negates the highjacking of the GOP by the far right, blustering Wingnuts, like Rush, Beck and Palin etc. Declaring that the GOP — because of their “take all the marbles or none”, approach, suffered an astounding defeat when the Dems passed Health care reform !!!! Take the current health bill for instance— it is very similar to the one Republican Romney crafted for Massachusetts– And is similar to the one approved, and crafted, by Bob Dole and 32 GOP members many years ago!!! Yet still the GOP stood in lockstep against anything – When they could have taken the high road, and instead put together a block of Representatives, for a coalition bill with the Dems, to include many GOP ideas !!! Obfuscating obstructionism, is a failed Political Ploy that left the GOP with no marbles, instead of some, in the view of Frum !!!— The GOP would do well to embrace moderates like Frum, rather than these incendiary, bobblehead, idealogues, from the far Right !!! The Current Republican base are Social conservatives , trying to hijack a Fiscal Conservative mantel , but unfortunately they have ZERO credibility as fiscally responsible, as evidenced by the Wanton Deficits of the Bush years !!! Its time the GOP looked in the mirror, and decided to work with the Dems for the betterment of the country — Instead of their current dice throw for a Partisan Power grab!!! Let them run for Country above Party — its the right path for the country in this time of great crisis!!!!! That’s the kind of intelligent posture true Conservatives like Frum stand for — but sadly, it seems, the Republican Base, would rather, for now, rally around the Empty barrels making the most noise!!!!

Why is it some people expect for President Obama to give in to Republicans? If the American people wanted a Republican President they had the opportunity to elect a Republican President. The American people rejected Republican policies and leadership in the last two elections. Now, they continue to try and make people believe that the American people want Republicans to be in charge. NOoooo !!!!
Republicans need to realize that the American people chose President Obama to lead the country. No matter how hard Republicans try to deny it, the majority of Americans rejected them and their policies. It is time to accept the results of a fair and free election and begin to support our President.

lyineyes1956 – If you were really smart, you would vote out encumbents of both parties. Both parties having been playing us for decades with “vote us in because the other party is worse.” If you are smart and have a memory, you will think back to what the republicans did to the country. Started a war that was not necessary and the side effect was losing the original war that was justified. Then they let businesses run wild with their profit schemes that caused a huge crash in our economy, put millions out of work and losing their health coverage and homes. And of course they did nothing about the doubling health care cost. This is not an endorsement of the democrats because like said at the start, we need to vote at the encumbents of both parties so we get new leadership in the parties that will pay more attention to 80% of Americans and less to the 5% that make up the rich and powerful.

GOP HAS MEET ITS WATERLOO……Prominent conservative commentator—former Bush speechwriter David Frum—argues that last night’s vote was an enormous political reversal for Republicans. Saying that the Republicans went for “all the marbles” by unanimously opposing the bill and refusing to compromise in any way—fueling activist fury at the same time—he writes: “So today’s defeat for free-market economics and Republican values is a huge win only for the conservative radio and television entertainment industry. Their listeners and viewers will now be even more enraged, even more frustrated, even more disappointed in everybody except the responsibility-free talkers on television and radio. For them, it’s mission accomplished. For the party as a whole not only did we lose the reform fight but we lost the moderate Republican and Independent voters, it’s Waterloo all right: ours.”………Frum’s assessment actually echoes a warning call that conservative writer William Kristol advanced in a famous memo preaching hard opposition to President Clinton’s 1993 health care reform bill. Kristol then cautioned that party leaders couldn’t afford to let any version of the measure pass, lest the provisions of the bill create powerful new political alliances for the Democrats, as had happened after the passage of Social Security and Medicare in prior battles over federal entitlements. (It should be noted that this morning Kristol appears to not be backing away from his past prediction of GOP doom and gloom if the Democrats successfully passed health care reform.) Kristol’s strategy of going all-in on opposing health care proved a political winner then: GOP opposition—combined with internal Democratic political tensions—defeated Clinton’s bill and set the stage for the 1994 Republican Revolution. In losing the vote this time out via a strategy of strict opposition, Frum argues that the GOP has left itself little in the way of legislative achievement to run on in future. If the GOP continues to be the “Party of No”, I can only see the Tea Party replacing the Republican Party thus stetting off a total and continued divide in our country. Liberal pundits, meanwhile, are offering tongue-in-cheek accolades to the “unsung” Democratic heroes of comprehensive health reform”: Because Republican leaders refused to work with the Democrats they unified the fractious Democrats and will now meet their waterloo in November. Bruce Bartlett, another conservative scholar who has been at odds with the right, wrote that Frum told him AEI staffers “had been ordered not to speak to the media” about health care “because they agreed with too much of what Obama was trying to do. “I am really and truly frightened by the collapse of support for the Republican Party by the young and the educated.”

“If you were really smart, you would vote out encumbents of both parties.” If you were really smart, you’d know how to spell incumbents. If you’re going to vote them out, best to know what they are first.

In reality if Healthcare reform were such a good idea it should have passed almost as soon as it was brought up. They had the votes but they didn’t and still don’t have the hearts of the people in this and once the ripple effect of this bill kicks in many more will join the disenfranchised.
There are some good ideas in both parties yet it appears we have a President who doesn’t need any ideas contrary to his own. So I say let him go ahead and when November comes around he’ll be surrounded by the ones he seems to hate.

The way to solve this is to follow the lead of South Carolina. They have a bill in their legislature, co-authored by both Democrats AND Republicans at this moment, calling for a Constitutional Convention to repeal the Healthcare Act. Perhaps IF we had one, we could reign in the uncontrolled expansion of the Federal Government and return power to the rightful owners, the People.

Hot Coffee: We will see in November. When the majority of the people oppose a bill and now oppose his job performance I see that as a problem for obama and the dems. It will be interesting to see why and what for 3.2 billion dollars in earmarks are going to be spent on for Stupak and his gang of twelve for voting for the health bill. I dont understand how anybody is not angry even the dems that people were bought off with not their money but taxpayers money. This corruption is sickening.

According to a study from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute, Obama has spoken to audiences in just seven of the 22 states he lost in the 2008 election.
In fact, he’s visited more foreign countries than he has “red states” — and he’s delivered eight times the number of speeches in states he won than in states John McCain won.

Okay, now that healthcare has passed, it’s apparent that OFA folks (that’s BarackObama the supposed grassroots movement) have little to do other than spout off. What you may not be aware of is that most Democrats WOULD NOT take calls, or listen to their constituents. And it seems everyone is okay with the President demonizing anyone who has a differing view. Axelrod “If they’re willing to work with us, we’ll work with them” is absolute nonsense. What he meant to say, as Obama, Pelosi, and their ilk have so aptly demonstrated, is “We’ll work with you, as long as you agree with us”. And let’s not forget that it is American to be able to disagree with our leaders. So don’t waste your breath calling me a racist, homophobe, defender of the “status quo”(one of Obama’s best labels), insurance lobbyist, bigot, fearmonger, naysayer(another Obama classic). Honestly, he’s got the media in his pocket, but he still complains about the media. Oh, I remember, it’s probably because he’s upset that freedom of speech exists in this country. I wonder how long that will last.

Will Obama address the real crisis, the rising national debt, or will he just keep pushing his agenda?
The debt according to the bluedog democrat website is already passing the debt ceiling which has been raised twice within months of each other.
The debt is forecast to double in five years and triple in ten. The total unfunded liabilities of the US is $105 trillion, but the net worth of the US is $51.5 trillion. Do you see the problem? Does Obama see the problem?
As James Carville should say, “It’s not about bipartisanship it’s about the debt stupid!”

I have to strongly agree with a couple of the previous comments, which are the basis of the little publicized “Coffee Party” movement. We now have a Health as they call it “Insurance” Reform, as I call it “Health Care Deform” package, which I was partially in support of. The problem outside of Max Baucus, who felt the middle class should start paying 40% tax on our benefits, and it will be the middle class workers who WILL PAY for it with downsized benefit plans, was the Republicans, with what I call their “King of the Hill” philosophy. I’ve heard little publicized Republican ideas, on a few of the talk shows, but mostly what we heard from their “Leader?” John Boehner, was about stopping medical lawsuits, and Demint with his Waterloo idea, and this became a power struggle, with the “All or Nothing” with the Democrats having the majority. We elect these people to represent the whole country. Not just the wealthy, not just the poor, not just the Republicans, and not just the Democrats. We need a strong sensible Centrist, or Moderate party in this country who is able to look at both sides of a problem, and come out with sensible WIN-WIN solutions to get this country in the right direction. I want to be part of the “United” as opposed to “Divided” States of America.

The headline should be “Obama moving forward without the support of the American people (not just the GOP)”. 80% of Americans did not want passage of Obamacare but he brided the Democratics to vote for it. Obama’s approval rate is below 40%, so a majority of Americans do not want him to do anything. Obama is a disaster.

Ahead of previous estimates? social security to be in the same condition years earlier then previous government estimates? and that was prior to the new entitlement. so take away $500 billion from medicare, add several million to its rolls, what is going to happen? you know what will. increased taxes, on the middle class, higher premiums deducted from your pay check, retirement, and social security checks. the poor don’t pay taxes. too few rich to stick. it’s the everyday working person, and middle class.

W: One of the first things W did as president was to call Ted Kennedy to the WH and ask him to write the Education Bill with him. Up to 9/11 he continued to spend considerable time talking and actually working with the Dems.
BHO: Had some GOPs over to the WH for sandwiches, told them this is what I want. GOPs said we like some of it, don’t like other parts. BHO responded, “We won the election.”

I like they way you are trying to come off as independent while placing all the blame for Iraq, Afghanistan and the Economy collapse completely on the Republicans. As I remember Americans Democrats and Republicans and Independents all supported BOTH wars. At the the time with the information that was presented Congress Overwhelmingly voted to support the Wars. After we were already there the information came under attack. At that point it is a little hard to just say “oops” and completely withdraw from a very unstable nation. To do that would be irresponsible and unethical. Not to mention dangerous to the troops waiting to be withdrawn as levels decreased. And I am pretty sure that the collapse of and scandal of Fannie May, Freddie Mack, Yes it is true Republicans are not the first to call to Regulate business but in this case they said we need to look into these dealings they seem a little to good to be true. Or we would have a collapse of our banking and Mortgage industry. What was the Democrats response to these claims? The Race Card. Nice and guess what the call for oversight ended and what happened? The Democrats did have a large hand in the collapse of the Economy. Are you expecting people to believe that all this Damage was done from 2000-2006. And none of this occurred after Democrats seized control with the November 2006 elections. Both Parties caused this!

Vicki–”President Obama will have to go forward with or without the cooperation of these moronic acting republicans. They made the decision to oppose President Obama and stir up hate against him instead. That does not indicate that these republicans are likely to act more professionally or concerned about America than they have been up to now.”—- What hate have the republicans stirred? Please elaborate on your comment. If over 605 of America OPPOSED the HCB in basically every poll that came out.. and Republicans stood against it while democrats passed it despite the will of the people, how can you say that they are not concerned about America.. It seems fairly clear that they are MORE concerned about the desires of the people who elected them than are the democrats who simply move forward with a far left agenda DESPITE the outcry from the public…

How would the president reason with the GOP who uses fear and conspiracy theories and misinformation to keep the fringe reactionaries stirred up and marching backwards? How can the President push legislation through with a group who’s only consideration is political one upsmanship? How can the President reason with the unreasonable fringe groups who disavow factual information in favor of delusion and utter foolishness. There is no reasoning with the unreasonable. The
GOP labeled the fringe groups as reactionaries. The GOP strategy is to keep the fringe stirred up with fear 24/7. The GOP and the “Tea Party” organisers take advantage of the fringe folks every day. Anyone who tries to correct the misinformation and foolishness with the fringe folks is just looking for trouble and heartburn. There is a group on the right who fights for their inherent right to be taken advantage of every day of their lives. For every person willing to sign on the bottom line for that piece of prime, alligator infested swampland, there is a willing salesman with a shiny new pen to give to the willing and deluded buyer. It is the American way. It is the natural order. It has been so, is so today, and will be so tomorrow and every day thereafter. The fringers were born to be taken advantage of, and the GOP has plenty shiny new pens.

President Obama will go forward as he should! He is very centrist in his thinking and pragmatic in his actions. He just keeps his head down and checks something else off his list while the GOP flail around looking like a bunch of dummies — I say go for it!!! And it’s about time we saw someone take the lead and govern this country!

Now is the time the Republicans need to stop their King of the Hill crap, along with the socialism crap, and try to work with the Democrats to fix the bad parts of this bill. They can gain more political ground, and become part of the solution.

The race is on to see how many private sector jobs can be lost by Obama and how many new government jobs can be added! He will just stomp his way through all of the country until someone stops him. November can’t come fast enough.

Nancy, he can only “stomp” so far until November, he’s toast. It will be a day to celebrate when we take back the house! You’re right, November can’t come fast enough!
