Oh, That Joe! (No. 49 in a Series) – Vice President Biden Sums Up Health Care Reform Legislation: ‘This is a Big F-ing Deal’
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: Politicians, pundits and the American public have all weighed in on the significance of President Obama signing into law health care reform legislation today. How big of a deal was it? Well, according to Vice President Biden at the event this morning, “This is a big f-ing deal.” After finishing his introduction of the president, Biden turned to shake Obama’s hand and offer a pat on his back. The microphone on the podium picked up Biden leaning in and saying to Obama: “This is a big f-ing deal.” Perhaps not the most appropriate choice of words, but the White House has not only confirmed Biden’s comments but given its stamp of approval to his declaration. “And yes Mr. Vice President, you're right…,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Twitter. ABC News’ Jake Tapper suggests an alternative theory on the vice president’s remarks, noting that the health care bill increases employees’ share of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes by 0.9% for upper-income wage earners. So perhaps what Biden was actually saying was “This is a big FICA deal”? Earlier in his remarks, Biden may have predicted his imminent faux pas. “I've gotten to know you well enough,” Biden said to Obama during his introduction. “You want me to stop because I'm embarrassing you.” -Karen Travers

Saying big $$%#@&@ deal to another adult male at a time felt to be so important is excusable . In fact as Carville says , give me a man with hot blood over one with a cold a heart . There are plenty of real reasons to hate these two . I am so glad ABC beeped it out , I haven’t heard that word since I was in Viet Nam . Biden is right on the money. They got it done! The GOP was cocky and thought this would play out again like 1994, if they became refuseniks, blustered, bullied, exaggerated and frightened per usual. But it did not finish that way this time. The good guys won, and the GOP just sputtered in shock and awe, exposed for the hateful, angry phonies they are. This was a major game-changer.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | March 23, 2010, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm
The lack of decorum in the White House is appalling. Biden needs to apologize to the country and they all need to clean up their act. This is not some sleazy bar they’re inhabiting – it’s the people’s house and they need to treat it/us with respect.
Posted by: grannysunni | March 23, 2010, 2:26 pm 2:26 pm
“Did the MSM report Cindy Sheehan’s group calling Obama a war criminal over the weekend? No”
Actually it was Cindy herself who said that and she has done so previously beginning with President Obama’s announced troop increase to Afghanistan.
But you have a good point.
FoxNews spent the whole weekend covering the 2000 tea party (trademark fox news) ignoring the tens of thousands that marched for immigration reform and the several thousand that marched against the war in the Capitol.

Nor did they include funding for the IRS, who is expected to hire 17,000 new employees to enforce payments of health insurance premiums. This was intentionally left out of the bill and will increase the debt by billions.

Hopefully the lawsuits by the states will kill this bill. If not – well in 2013 (after the 2012 vote), the HC bill will be history – just a bad dream. See ya all you dems that voted for it! Republicans failed in their attempts to stop health care reform. During the next few months, hopefully Americans will read the bill and see what’s in it. After understanding whats in the bill, please draw your own conclusions and stop being led by the nose by the Republican party whose only objective is to stop President Obama from succeeding as President. Bad taste and poor judgement, ABC. This Biden behavior does not rise to the level of importance that reporting it is responsible journalism. Doing so is not in the best interest of our country, and only serves the financial needs of ABC (a responsible editor would have quashed this story), much in the same way that similar salacious items fuel the supermarket tabloid business. I do not enjoy watching a once-respected news organization dumbing itself down for a buck.

Great points, ron.
I just noticed that in addition to the Gallup numbers being up when it comes to health care, the President’s approval rating is over 50% again as well– much higher than Reagan’s was at this point, and on par with Clinton’s. They both, of course, were re-elected.
And this may have energized Democrats. Per Planet Washington (McClatchey blog): “Twenty-two Democratic Senators, including some from coal-dependent Midwestern states … have written a letter to Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid saying they think the Senate should take up a climate and energy bill this year “with a renewed focus on jobs and reduced dependence on foreign oil.” … The letter argues that a clean energy policy in the U.S. would create jobs at home. It also warns that Asia and Europe are “moving aggressively to take the lead in efficiency, renewables, clean coal, batteries, nuclear energy and other technologies.”

Of all the words in the English language, an educated man like Joe Biden should be able to come up with a word besides that one to be used in his comment. Really!!! Do we need to get him a dictionary – or a thesaurus? You can’t expect youngsters not to use that word when even the VP uses it.

But to call for ANY Presedent’s assassination is criminal. I don’t believe this is a solution. Can you understand what this would do to World Politics and how it would affect our Government? There is no room for such talk. Any person stating they want to kill the President of the U.S. is just stupid and deserves what they get. Having said that I am still against the big FED GOVT. to interfear with State’s Rights. We States should be the ones to decide what form of Health Care we think fits our own State. Comparing California to Mississippi and there is a BIG PROBLEM HERE. We in Miss. cannot afford this new bill. California with all the illegal citizens will be taking away tax dollars each State has to pay into the Fed. Govt. coffers. “States Rights” is what it is all about.

When half the country disagree’s with what’s going on.It was fine for the president to come here twice to raise millions for Harry though. Oh I was thinking of the House since all Congress persons are up for re-election.
Can’t exactly vote out all the liberal Senators when many are not even up for re-election yet.
Boxer is an interesting case though….her job approvals barely hover above 50% most of the time (contrast with much higher for Dianne Feinstein in Blue CA) yet she is re-elected every year by a good margin.
The respected Field Poll has her losing to Campbell by 1 and only beating Fiorina by 1.
RCP’s avg has her up 2.2 over Campbell, up 6 over Fiorina.
Still pretty early though and she does have a pretty sizable war chest which is a must in CA.

To “disprove” this, you link to RCP’s poll average which does not yet include the referenced Gallup poll.

Progressive, you keep quoting ONE incredibly biased liberal poll.
__________
Actually, I’m pointing out that you were incorrect when you said the latest gallup poll numbers for health care, post-passage of legislation, were included in the RCP average.
I’m also pointing out that its the first poll outpost-passage, so until other polls come out post-passage, RCP isn’t as useful a metric as it will be in a week or two. Right now, it doesn’t measure the popularity post-passage or give any information as to whether there will be a bump across the board.
I’m not sure what your point is– but its clear you’re angry and you’re not thinking or reading clearly.

This has never been about Democrats vs Republicans, everyone needs to stop and see the changes that will now affect the constitution, that affect our children and then grandchildren, Ask yourself why, who owns the federal reserve, and who is really dictating these changes. Reality is most Americans do not want the bill just signed into law. By any poll.
Reality is Obama has the lowest approval rating, at this point in his term, of any president in the last 100 years.
Reality is this administration violated both the spirit and the letter of standing federal law and of our Constitution.
Reality is the bill will quickly, not years from now, be put before the Supreme Court. Who will strike it down.
Reality is there are now 37 states passing nullification legislation and 10 or more have filed suit. No one is going to abide by this bill.
Then there will come the cries for impeachment, and rightfully so.
Followed by a near total sweeping away of Dems in the 2010 elections.

Thankfully we have some data on this so its not rhetorical.
I understand that the Gallup poll linked to on the Real Clear Politics average poll page for healthcare is dated over 2 weeks ago and the poll originally posted by Mick and discussed by prog mama came out today.
You insist the RCP average includes this new Gallup poll even linking to RCP’s poll compilation page and not bothering to read it.
So its not so much about that I am smarter but how dumb you are.
Hope that helps.

Cigna
Blue Cross
Health First
Medicare

“The Swiss do not have a government run healthcare system”
Much like our own healthcare system, the Swiss have a hybrid healthcare system in which they public and private options.
They also make it compulsory for EVERYONE to buy health insurance and health insurance companies must offer basic health insurance to anyone regardless of condition/age and may not make a profit off this basic insurance.
Could the right wingers repeating what Hannity or Beck or Rush told them actually investigate before they parrot?

While Sweden is a first world country, its health care system – at least in regards to access – is closer to the third world.
Because the health care system is heavily-funded and operated by the government, the system is plagued with waiting lists for surgery. Those waiting lists increase patients’ anxiety, pain and risk of death.
Sweden’s health care system offers two lessons for the policymakers of the United States. The first is that a single-payer system is not the answer to the problems faced as Americans. Sweden’s system does not hold down costs and results in rationing of care.
The second lesson is that market-oriented reforms must permit the market to work.
When the United States chooses to reform its health care system, reform should lead to improvement. Reforming along the lines of Sweden would only make our system worse.

Deja-Poo – I’ve heard all this crap before.
Oh how some Republicans forget November 22, 2003. Under George W. and the plan to overhaul Medicare, what we know as Part D. Polls clearly indicated America did not want it, that it would be a colossal f-up and expensive to boot; silver-haired voters vowed to elect out of office all who voted for it…sound familiar? Republicans held the vote around 3:00 AM and held the vote open for hours while Hastert and Delay twisted arms in the Repub party for dissenting Repub to change their vote because it was losing. It barely passed. It took 2 years of educating the public/Seniors after it was passed and now most agree it was a good start… Same song – different party.

RyanC…Health care is a right. It’s called human dignity. The Swiss take care of their own. They don’t stomp all over the poor to retain their but t loads of cash. They willingly help their neighbor and think nothing unusual of it.It’s called civility and community. And they’re happier for it. Something Americans have lost along the way. You’re too busy pointing fingers and criticizing the less fortunate. And the health care debate isn’t just about the poor and illigal immigrants. It’s about the working poor, and the middle class and their escalating premiums. Many workers have given up raises and cost of living increases just to reatain sub-standard health insurance. Railworkers have had to absorb costs along with the company of over 40% just in the last 5 years, while giving up cost of living raises. Sickening. But yet the insurance companies they purchase their health insurance from have recorded billionsdollars in profits in just one quarter of one year. And the elderly that have worked and saved their whole life, but can’t afford to buy prescriptions because of the donut hole. You’re a fool if you think this issue of decent health care coverage is about lazy people. We have the best health care in the world…and most Americans can’t fully utilize the system, or use it at all. Families are being eaten alive by the health insurance industry. A person’s health should never be gambled with to make a profit. It’s inhumane.

The nuclear option as it was known was not reconciliation but the elimination of the filibuster during the contentious 2005-2006 Congress.
It was stopped by the Gang of 14.
Recently FoxNews and other right wing media outlets figured their base was stupid and they could just rename reconciliation which was used by the Republicans several times under Bush as the nuclear option.
Guess they were right for some of the base.

Well True American, more people were against this so do the math. Even libs are coming out and saying this November is going to be a bloodbath. What I love about it is that Obama still thinks he can get people elected. He campaigned for all the people that LOST last November. The public has caught on to this scam. Your time is almost up. I think its ok that Vice President dropped the F bomb, he did not mean to be on a hot mike. Now if it was a Republican than I would think differently, because it was racist and hate motivated. If it was a Republican I believe they should be forced to resign if they dropped the f bomb. But since its just Old Joe lets just drop it and move on.

I am writing because America is close to
my heart and I am wondering where we have been and where we are now? I remember when other countries saw America as America the Beautiful and it is a place to be. Today I wonder what are they thinking about us now. I remember hearing the song Home of the Free and Home of the Brave and I see a
Nation that’s so devided until we can’t
together to agree to disagree. I have read a house divided against itself shall fail. I read one of the comments where someone stated A Prominent Leader made a Derogatory Comment at the podium after President Obama spoke after signing the Health Care Bill and he is suppose to be an example for our children. I want to say what example is the rest of our Leaders showing when they devide themselves in groups and say we are the only ones that have the answers and one group is better than the
other. What happen when one race of people say I am better and above the other and they don’t have the right to be President of the United States and He will fail and we will see that it will happen. I am going to say something and I know you will say it doesn’t have anything to do with politics but the WORD Of GOD says whether you believe it or not but it is TRUE AND BINDING THAT HE HAS NO RESPECT OF PERSON. We as a people regardless what your race, creed or color need to come to the understanding that GOD made all of us also as HE MADE THIS WORLD AND
EVERY THING IN IT. HE also said HE WILL BLESS WHOM HE WILL AND CURSE WHOM HE WILL.HE ALSO SAID SALVATION IS FREE AND
LOVE AND REPENTENCE IS THE KEY TO SALVATION.WHAT HE IS SAYING IS GET THE HATRED OUT OF OUR HEARTS AND ALLOW LOVE TO COME IN AND WE CAN COME TOGETHER AS A NATION. LET US MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

How are 26-year-olds considered “kids?” to be covered under their parent’s health care plans. At 26 years old, they are adults who can vote, can die for their country, and could have been reproducing for 10 or more years. They are not “kids.”
This will open up so much fraud the government won’t be able to keep up with it all.

Let everyone go read Isaiah 58 and Luke 4:13-21. in the Holy Bible before you start commenting. then you might be able to know who is right and who is wrong. Again, let everyone go read and meditate on Isaiah 58 and Luke 4:13-21 about God and Jesus before signing. It will give you serious idea of what God/Jesus Christ would have done concerning Healthcare bill.
READ AND SEE WHAT JESUS CHRIST WOULD HAVE DONE, and that we tell you which party He will support in November. Remember–Jesus cannot be bribed by anyone. GOP cannot bribe Him. DEMS cannot bribe Him. No one can. Read slowly and carefully and then make your judgment about who is destroying this nation in regard to this healthcare. See what verdict JESUS would give if He is sitting in American court rooms. Don’t be scared about the truth. Just go read and be able to see who God would spank and who He will spare. Check it out and see what freedom is and what freedom is not. What God will reward and what God must not reward. Who is on the right track or who is on the wrong track on healthcare. Whether He would prefer public option here or private option or both. What will He take out or what will He leave? Is the bill MOSTLY good or MOSTLY terrible? ETC. Meditate!

Many states have varying laws on your offspring remaining on your insurance after they turn 18.
There were different ages and some had conditions (must be full time student, live with parents etc).

You better belive it is a big deal! These states who are filing law suits against this healthcare legislation are only proving that their loyalty lies with the constitution of the United States and to the people which it protects, and not to the tyrants who are defying its soverign rule of law. This healthcare legislation is an arrogant act of treason against it. The Federal government may trump the state governments but the constitution trumps all. I only hope and pray that America has the backbone to stop this. All things are possible and I believe that it most certainly can be tossed in the trash if America has the will-power to do it. Ronald Reagon spoke more like a prophet than a politician when he warned of things like this to come if America ever gave up the fight against socialism. Why is it that the more “dignified” our societies become, the harder those in power fight to reduce the people back to slavery?

Ryan C, the designation of ‘children’ simply mean the biological progeny, not that they are minors not responsible for themselves.
When it was studied who made up the 46 million Americans that can’t afford insurance, a big chunk was the 19 to 25 year olds. In that age group you are either in college or working but in either case you don’t have the opportunity or the money to buy insurance or your low-paying job doesn’t offer it.
This change isn’t going to cost the insurance companies much money since that young age group is pretty healthy but it will give these young adults coverage in case they get sick.
So, in summary, ‘children’ does not mean ‘minors’ and this won’t lead to fraud as only your registered children (that the government already knows about from your tax returns) would be eligible.

Franklin D Roosevelt passed Social Security when unemployment was at 12.5%. This is one of the greatest social program that all americans enjoy. Lyndon Johnson passed medicaid and medicare to help the poor and the old. Now Barack Obama passed health care reform that have been fought for over 100 years. This reform paves the beginning for access to health care by so many needy americans.
This follow God’s commandment “love your neighbor”. These 3 Presidents secured their legacy as one of the great Presidents of the USA.

Quick, someone write down Joe’s words for posterity-his sayings will go down with Jefferson’s.

WAIT!!!!!!!!!
You’re complaining that we’re turning into a socialist, communist, Marxist country and yet you complain about the freedom of speech of our VP exercised?
Give me a fookin break!
Posted by: brian | March 24, 2010, 2:04 am 2:04 am
The VP has the same freedom of speech we all do here in what passes for America nowadays. This is why I’m allowed to say that he exhibits all the class of the used-car salesman he resembles.

It happens! Get over it. There are more things to make the news than the wrong word at the wrong time. How’d we get a human being as Vice President?

Give me a break, let those who are without sin cast the first stone! Great words to live by!
Posted by: Dennis | March 24, 2010, 7:30 am 7:30 am
I’ve heard a saying to which I agree, goes something like “Cursing is the sign of an inferior mind.”
Notice I said cursing not swearing. The fine art of swearing requires a colorful vocabulary that displays one’s anger, frustration, and even joy without the use of a one foul word.
There’s an amusing commercial for Orbit chewing gum playing on TV in my area. (Dirty mouth? Clean it up with Orbit) Two women are fighting over a man..the husband of one of the women.
They display their anger and hate to the other woman (and the viewers) and never use a single word more offensive than the childhood favorite ‘cootie’.

Yes they are; I try to do so every day. Fail far too many times.
But people often stop there without completing the story. Christ forgives the woman for her sin and then tells to ‘sin no more’.

You gotta love Joe Biden. He opens his mouth and out spews insightful words. He got it exactly right – we bent over and they…. well, you know what they did. I don’t remember getting kissed though. Thanks Joe.

Biden is an idiot and second in line to the WH. As scary as that is, I would prefer him over Obama.

Yes malcat I know the rest of the stoy. But, my statment wasn’t for the sake of the sinner, but rather the ones throwing the stones as Christ’s words were.

Free speech for the “genius” VP–he is counting on his young supporters to laugh in glee–Methinks this whole thing was planned by Obama and Biden–they do not make those kinds of mistakes. Some of you people are very naive!
Posted by: sifto77 | March 24, 2010, 9:58 am 9:58 am
malcat–actually, it was the liberal media–ABC, CNN, Msnbc who brought it up first–makes me know it was planned by O and B to appear “cool”.

“Well, according to Vice President Biden at the event this morning, “This is a big ****ing deal.”” – ABC News
Ha! Why yes it is Joe!
Too bad it’s the wrong ****ing deal for America.

I would be ashamed of my hard-working 3 sons if they expected me to pay for their health-care up to age 26–how many ordinary Americans can afford that?–this part of the bill was MADE for the rich parents who coddle their kids and give them “inheritance” money early.Probqably all of Pelosi and Obama supporters.
Posted by: sifto77 | March 24, 2010, 10:07 am 10:07 am
Your vice president has given us a new swear word, or at least, a new euphemism. From now on, the new raunchy adjective will be “Biden.” As in: “Big Biden Deal!”; “Get your Biden paws off my donut!”; and, if you don’t like it, “Too bad Biden bad!” Way to go Joe! That was Biden wonderful!

If Bush or any of his people spoke in such an unprofessional manor, the lefty media would crucify them.
It is a shame that Biden hasn’t the educated vocabulary to express himself in a way more fitting of the office he holds. It shows the Liberal mindset of not respecting their office.

I dropped my 19 year old from my insurance because I couldn’t afford the $70 extra bucks a month. How in the world is this part of the Obama care going to make a difference to families who don’t even have jobs, or are barely getting by?
Posted by: elysummers | March 24, 2010, 10:59 am 10:59 am
So what? do you people not live in the real world where that word is used everyday? I worked in professional offices my entire life and that word is common place. Get over it.
You have finally driven me away from GMA with your over reacting reporting or inaccurate reporting of a not so newsworthy event.

I have lodged an official complaint with the FCC over the vice president’s use on live television of the lewd and offensive “f” word at the health care bill signing. This word is sexual harrassing implying a sexual act. It would seem that it rises above Janet Jackson’s clothing malfunction which resulted in large fines from FCC.
The vice president and the pres. press secretary should quickly apologize for the remark as well as the not so humorous attempt to cover for it.
Posted by: Charlotte Dunn NIchols | March 24, 2010, 11:07 am 11:07 am
As someone who has been known to “drop the ‘F’ bomb” on more than one occasion all I can say – “He is right”!

Posted by: sifto77…”I would be ashamed of my hard-working 3 sons if they expected me to pay for their health-care up to age 26–how many ordinary Americans can afford that?”
There’s nothing to be ashamed of. I am one of three hard working sons. I’m 26 years old and in medical school. My parents are hard working blue collar Americans, who care about me and my brothers. My family is not rich… in fact I am 200k + in debt from school. It would have been easier in cheaper for both me and my parents to keep me on their insurance until I graduate. Instead I’ve had to take out loans to pay for my insurance. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You should be ashamed of your hubris and ignorance of other peoples’ unique situations.

The political strategists and news anchors laughing at the obscenity on this morning’s show and freely admitting to the same behavior is a sad commentary on the accelerating degradation of our culture. It is not funny or acceptable to casually throw around terms of sexual violence.

Oh…pianogirl…your 12:03 post, I should “let it go” but I can’t. Why is it some people know how to “live life to its fullest – and make some ‘mistakes’ along the way” but who are better human beings on the things that count – than those that “restrict their thinking” into “black and white mind sets”?

Anybody believing Obama when he said “pre-exisiting conditions for children” were covered now…… HA-HA-HA-HA!!!! … The silly Dems FORGOT to put it in the bill… they all thought it was in there!!!!! —— They’ve been talking it up… even Obama during the bill signing…. but it’s NOT law… the kids hae to wait until 2014 too!!!

Funny that is only word Joe could think of,about this health care bill? Why not a great deal, fantastic deal, super deal, But no he thought of foul language, maybe to stoop to the President’s level of understanding. After a while a baffoon is a baffoon but the media keeps making excuses for his infantile behavior.

Posted by: jock59801 | March 24, 2010, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm
I don’t know Jock, I’m pretty average. But I seldom use the F-bomb while introducing the President of the US at an historic bill signing ceremony. How about you?
Posted by: Todd | March 24, 2010, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm
I have always stressed to my child that the English language is full of words much more appropriate than foul language. You can certainly tell a lot about people by the language they use. just goes to show you!!! You can get your point across without being a foul mouth! People that use foul language don’t deserve my respect…

How come Joe can make bluders and talk like a jerk and everyone laughs it off? Let it be someone from the other side of the aisle and they are chastised and have to aplogize over and over and over.

He just knows that liberals love imbeciles.

Biden was picked because he is a doofus, and will stay out of the way of Obama’s destruction of the dollar. Our kids will be paying for this man child’s spending spree for the rest of their lives.

I am always fascinated by the use of loaded language in political arguments. I am not above resorting to such language myself when I have to counter its use by opponents in debate.

Great post, I enjoyed this very much. Word Routes is an excellent compendium on the popular parlance and a welcomed addition to the thesaurus. I never feel that it interferes with my use of the tool. But every time I take the detour and read your postings. I learn something interesting and am glad that I did.
