Patrick Kennedy vs the News Media
ABC’s Jonathan Karl reports: In a fiery speech on the floor of the House, Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-RI, lashed out at the news media for focusing on trivial issues and ignoring a Congressional debate over the war in Afghanistan. “It’s despicable, the national press corps right now,” Kennedy bellowed.
Kennedy’s outburst came as the House debated a measure sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-OH, that would set a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan. “If anyone wants to know where the cynicism is, there’s two press people in this gallery,” Kennedy yelled as he gestured up to the press gallery above the House floor. “We’re talking about Eric Massa 24/7 on the TV. We’re talking about war and peace — $3 billion, 1,000 lives — and no press, no press.”
“You want to know why the American public is fit?” he continued. “They’re fit because they’re not seeing their congress do the work that they’re sent to do. It’s because the press, the press of the United States is not covering the most significant issue of national importance and that’s the laying of lives down in the nation for the service of our country. it’s despicable, the national press corps right now.” As Kennedy spoke, the floor of the House was almost as empty as the press gallery, with only about a dozen of the 431 members of the House in attendance. Before lambasting the press, Kennedy harshly criticized the Obama Administration’s policy in Afghanistan. “I hear my colleagues talk about the flag of Afghanistan, as if Afghanistan is a country,” he said. “In case anybody has bothered to look at it, it’s a loose collection of 121 different sovereign tribes, none of them get along with each other, and it’s a mountainous terrain of rock and gravel and the notion that our soldiers are over there laying down their lives to secure ground. We ought to be after the Taliban and the terrorists, anybody who is organizing to strike in our country, I am for that. “But I am not for organizing an organized military campaign where we’re having to go in and take in these towns and subject our soldiers to unnecessary threats where we are putting our treasure and our lives and our men and women in uniform on the line unnecessarily.”

Regarding the media, I would have to agree with him completely because there are so many issues that our press leaves out. Some perhaps deliberately. They are also to busy covering stories that leave the American public more ignorant than before they started watching. The media in this country has grown to BIG and they have to much power, just like the corporations that practically run the government.

As it is highly unlikely that a Kennedy was sober or not taking Ambien or sleeping with an underage babysitter, I suggest he stop thinking about Eric Massa and Rahm Emanuel being naked.
Kennedy can go coddle his buddy Hugo Chavez and leave the American people alone, Those of us with family members in the military aren’t going to be lectured by a Kennedy slug.

Those of us who have family members who have died or been mentally or physically damaged beyond repair to that a few multinational crime syndicate arms and drug dealers can have new clients to market their weapons of true mass destruction, stand up and APPLAUD you Rep. Kennedy.
Too bad your President is too busy carrying out Bush’s 3rd term and appealing to drug dealers and human rights abusers in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to notice.
700 military bases, 130 countries, thousands killed, maimed or physically scarred beyond repair and dying from toxic waste exposure (DU) soldier and civillian alike… And all most can do is say “I support the troops.”
BS. Utter BS. If you supported the troops you would answer one question: “Why are men dying fighting wars and bombing bridges overseas, when our bridges are falling down and our borders are undefended?” National Security My A**! Somebody loves making money of off dead Americans. Wether they are American or foreign is merely irrelivant.
Come on folks, war is over… If you want it. No excuses.

Obama doesn’t want people focused on Afghanistan – and the fact that we are getting ready to pull our troops out early – right after we finally start winning (and Iran’s President goes in to take over). Obama wants to give this country over to his best buddy in Iran, just as he has sat back and distracted this country with this healthcare nonsense for a year so that we don’t focus on the nuclear weapons his buddies in Iran are getting ready to target onto our allies. What is humbling (and bringing us down)

In this country, political editorials are considered news, facts don’t fit in with what passes as journalism, and “fair and balanced” means hating liberals. Until the “press” is a free press and something is offered to the people that is not based on entertainment value, Kennedy is right.

===========================
It’s YOU who apparently gets a charge out of spitting these disgusting words at the millions of American liberals who fought for freedom.
You are despicable. If this wasn’t a civilized forum I’d call you much worse.
My father, a liberal, was wounded twice and lost half his hand fighting Darby’s Rangers in WW2. My family sent two liberals to fight in Iraq. That’s one more than the Bush White House.
If I wanted to be as despicable as you, I’d point out that Charles Lindbergh and many Republicans opposed us supporting Britain from 1939 through 1941 and I’d imitate you and make the false, rotten claim that Republicans didn’t want to fight for America. And its true that many Americans voted for Republicans through the last half of the 20th century because it was the Democrats who were willing to fight wars and Republicans who kept us out of them – as if that meant either party would be any different if the circumstances warranted.
Vietnam? When the GOP’s Nixon became President, the Democrats had put 500,000 men in Vietnam. Several years later it was GOP Pres. Gerald Ford who had the courage to pull us out of a ridiculous “police action” in which we weren’t allowed to cross the DMZ and attack the enemy. By that time he did that few Dems. of Reps. argued with the decision.
Gulf War? We lost that??? GOP President George H W Bush made the decision to stop the invasion before it progressed far into Iraq after we had kicked their butts. That was supported by all Americans (again, a member of my liberal family served, driving a tank in the “Hail Mary” attack, and I had been involved in research on the fuel used in the Tomahawk Cruise Missiles used in that war).
Iraq? Bush set a timeline for withdrawal. Why do you want any more money wasted there?
Afghanistan? Bush almost bumbled that war away. When candidate Obama suggested remote bombings in Pakistan, Bush called him “naive”, then did just what Obama said a couple months later. Now, Obama has more than doubled the number of troops the GOP place there. How is that wanting to lose?
Both parties have made war errors, but both parties have defended America and its members support America’s use of force.
On the other hand, some Americans “get a charge” out of being divisive. You should list your address here so al-Qaeda can send you a thank you gift for doing that!

The Democrate party is full of liars, elitist, and MARXIST. All the Kennedy’s have a dirty past, and good riddance to them. The only press reporting hard facts is the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, Barron’s, and Investor’s Daily. Most news in this country is propaganda fed to the masses. You have a bunch of self absorbed elitist trying to transform our country into a Marxist gulag, and you people out there need to realize what is going on, and you need to do some research into Obama, and his radical Marxist pals. In fact check into all the fraud, and corruption in the Democrat Party while your at it. Be an American FIRST, and party LEMMING last. America is a great country, with great people, we don’t need big government Marxist ruining our lives with their ambitions of power.

The media is nothing more than news entertainment. They cover only the things that give them ratings and only provide the statements that will boost their ratings. The media cares nothing for the real truth. They want to push their agenda and garnish their ratings. They have become as fake as professional wrestling. Think about it. NPR is just as skewed as Rush Limbaugh yet each claim to be telling the “facts”. But, neither side tells the complete truth. They only cover and focus on what supports their agenda.

Why didn’t this get more play! Kennedy is reaching out and capturing what so many Americans feel with this speech! He hits the heart with this speech and it should have been a major topic in news reports across this country!
Sadly he is so right. The national media is now almost fully controlled by a few chains. That is why the coverage is so bland and why issues just get ignored. I pop on Drudge because it gives access to newspapers all over the world – and you can see just how little our own major media is reporting!

Kennedy is right- the Press Corp has become a vampire for sensationalism of junk news and making massive profits.
They need to go back to reporting truth – and to begin showing integrity they once had- they have become as trivial as a Supermarket tabloid.
Posted by: Peter | March 11, 2010, 6:27 am 6:27 am
I find it curious that there was no outrage when the media:
(1) Ignored hours of testimony over several years by Bush Administration officials and Congressional Republicans seeking legislation to rein in Fannie & Freddie over objections from the Democrats.
(2) Characterized Climategate as a ‘theft’ as opposed to the event that exposed fraudulent behavior by recipients of AGW funding.
(3) Sat still while the administration launched a frontal assault on the first amendment – attacking members of the free press and that the founders saw as the watchdogs of the republic and threw around terms like net-neutrality.
So the love affair that the media has had with the left and left-wing causes for years (or forever) has transformed into a slobbering love affair with the administration. No news here.

LMAO! Next time you should do some research…
I guess that’s why there are more “liberal” Democrat U.S. Senators that are COMBAT VETERANS, than there are brainless republicans that served in combat.
There are currently 6 Democrat COMBAT VETERANS in the U.S. Senate:
Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI)
Thomas Carper (D-DEL)
Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
John Robert Kerry (D-MA)
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Jim Webb (D-VA)
There is only 1 Republican combat veteran serving in congress:
John R. McCain (R-AZ)

We stopped getting the real news years ago. Just look at what we get for morning news! It is a joke with so many things going on we have to see a dog reacued A(a Nice Act To be Sure) but in place of real news?

We like reality TV, reactionary programming, and nothing that actually excercises ones brain, or instigates actual thought. The worst part is scandal is the new reality TV. Our people need to get out of Afghanistan, it is a war that can
not be won – caves and mountains
everywhere. Russia tried – for 10 years. Our economy is going bankrupt.
American companies are outsourcing jobs
to India, Phillipines, Canada – you
name it. We only have 17% of our
manufacturing jobs left in this country.
Our people cannot survive on banking,
health care, insurance and education jobs only. We used to be a nation that made products. We are a nation of consumers,
a nation of debt, a people that want it
now- don’t work hard for it just give it to me. We are drowning in our own self consumption. We have allowed illegal immigrants to work and live in this country, and they don’t pay in to the government system. We have American companies bringing in people from other countries
to work – Microsoft, Intel and Apple. They give them American paid wages with
an opportunity to stay in this country
for 10 years and then collect social securtiy at retirement age. We send the Social Security checks to their
countries – after we have allowed them to make a wage they would not have had
an opportunity to make in their own
country. Not to mention an American
lost that job to a foreigner. Visit other countries like France, England,
China etc… Outsiders will never take front seat. Bring our jobs back. Americans need to boycott these companies, and start recycling products.
Stop product made in China.
These American companies that outsource are traders, they have
turned their backs on the American people. While other countries flourish
we are becoming a nation of poverty.
Posted by: Terri | March 11, 2010, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm
Our American cititzens need to stop
buying products made in China. Buy
your items from garage sales, thrift
stores, salvation army – stop providing
wages for the Chinese workers. Demand
that American companies be taxed heavy
for employing people outside of the
United States. Those companies that
outsource need to be taxed heavy, and
that money needs to go back to the
American people. Expedia has call centers in the Phillipines, but the national headquarters is here in the U.S. Also, alot of your call centers
for customer service is outsourced – just ask where you are calling. If you
are doing business with a company that is outsourcing stop immediately giving them money. Work with only those companies that are interested in keeping the American dream alive. End the war, and bring our soldiers home.
Expose the dirty politicians that back
outsourcing, or anything non-American.
Greed is what keeps them going – we have
politicians today that have businesses
in other countries – making clothes etc… These people need to be exposed
and exiled.

Representative Kennedy was completely right to call out the national press corps for having their priorities completly backwards.
I remember distinctly watching the 24/7 coverage of Tiger Woods’ affair and seeing a small item about the latest offensive in Afghanistan at the bottom of the screen. I doubt that either Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite would give a celebrity sex scandal the dignity of being mentioned on the evening news but now that this grist forthe mill of infotainment news coverage.
Regardless of whether you sopport or oppose American involvement in Afghanistan it is a critical issue which needs and deserves press coverage.

You know what I think on this topic? I believe good people like Evan Byah and Patrick Kennedy are getting “burnt out”. But instead of blaming the “media” the should be blaming the ridiculous “divisiveness” we now call “politics”. Because when we Americans become so distrustful of the 1) our media and 2) our government, then we better start checking our “pulse” as a free country. The cynical, “backlash” strategies that now inhabit our political parties is the
REAL problem. We have forgotten that to really be “The United States” we need to lose our selfishness, narcissism and start solving our problems “together” again.

Normal people don’t demand respect and attention. But Rep. Patrick, being a Kennedy, thinks he has a right to demand attention. When nobody paid any attention to his “speech” he got mad at the press (the same press who made the Kennedys the demi-god in USA). Wake up Patrick, it is time to smell coffee or whatever you inhale. If you want to be heard, talk about the subject people want to hear and stay away from buddies like Castro, Chavez and Johnnie Walker (blue label).

John F. Kennedy said:
“why our press was protected by the First Amendment– the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution- -not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and the sentimental, not to simply “give the public what it wants”–but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold, educate and sometimes even anger public opinion.”
You won’t read this anywhere else because the media today feeds us crap to keep us ill informed. Titillation sells and makes into zombies.

Heaven help me if I were to be judged by the character of MY idiot brother– but I would still trust him to tell me the correct time if I asked. Kennedy has told the unvarnished truth about our intellectually lazy press, and the media proves it by yawning, rolling over, and going back to sleep.

. Common Mr. Kennedy… though you belong to the Kennedy clan but you are no John F Kennedy. funny!hahahaha
there are two reason why the medias are ore were reluctant to report news about Afghanistan first becaus the “Messiah” is at the helm now and they do not want to upset their Emperor and number two because its quite possible that the news media finally recognized that the news they cover causes the moral of our troops to go bad. Thus giving our enemy, Islamic fascist terrorist, more reason to kill us all.
