President Obama to Axelrod: Last Night’s Victory Meant More to Me Than Winning the Election

"I don't think I've seen the president as happy as  he was last night about anything that we've done over the years, including the election," White House senior adviser David Axelrod told ABC News Monday afternoon, speaking of the House passing health care reform legislation.

Really? More than election night?

Yes, said Axelrod. The president told him this morning, “You win the election, it’s like the quarter finals — but the goal is to get to the place where you can actually make a difference. And last night we did something that is going to make a positive difference for this country and for the American people for generations to come.:

Last night the president toasted his staff on the Truman Balcony.

“He was ebullient when…when we had this reception on the Truman balcony last night and  very generous to his staff that worked so hard to make it happen,” Axelrod said. “He said, ‘You know, I’m just your spokesperson, you’re the guys who did the work.’”

Axelrod of course took issue with that. “We all know he’s the one that put this on his back. And carried it and I think the one thing the American people saw I’ve seen as long as I’ve known him, is a real persistence, commitment, character that – and it only is because of that that we got here. This thing could have died a thousand deaths but for the determination of Barack Obama to solve a problem that has bedeviled this country for a hundred years.”

But White House officials know they still have some selling to do when it comes to the controversial legislation, about which the public seems evenly divided.

“It will be law tomorrow and we will go out,” Axelrod said. “We’re going to go back to Iowa City where he began this campaign for health reform several years ago. Because in many ways this is a victory for the people at the grassroots who shared their stories who campaigned for this and who I think made that vote possible yesterday.”

It’s still a fairly controversial bit of legislation, ABC News pointed out to Axelrod.

“Well I think anytime you do something of magnitude it is controversial,” Axelrod said. “Social Security was controversial, Medicare was controversial.”

But those passed with bipartisan support, ABC News said.

“Well those were different times too,” Axelrod replied. “We understand that we were governing at a different time. And from the very beginning unfortunately the leadership in Congress has taken the position that we’re going to oppose us at most turns hoping that somehow if  this president fails, that their party would succeed. I think that’s an unfortunate position to take.”

Axelrod added that he was “disappointed to see Senator (John) McCain say this morning that there would be no cooperation from the Republicans in the Senate for the rest of the year because they were upset at the outcome on health care.”

The President’s senior adviser said, “You know, that’s okay on the sandlot but that’s not really okay when you’re trying to govern a country and move a country forward. It’s a disappointing attitude.”

Waiting to see reports that accurately reflect the polls:
The increasingly unpopular president, in the face of bipartisan opposition, embraced legislation opposed by a substantial majority of the public.

Nonsense. The President’s approval ratings are at 50% in Gallup today – more or less where’s he been for months now.

I can certainly understand Obama’s happiness because he scored a major victory in controlling peoples’ lives. He is not about governing. His objectives are to rip apart the very fabric of American, or as he puts it “To fundamentally change America.” So, having Government controlling a major part of the US economy, requiring people to purchase insurance or be fined, and doing all of this against the will of ~60% of Americans probably caused him to, say, get excited. Happy. Absolutely. Now, on to immigration reform.

finally, health care bill won.good for all.wondered why there’s such a big fight to stop that bill passed.the number one aim of Pres.Obama is for everyone regardless of situation in life to be able get and be provided medical/health care.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration expected to win any lawsuits filed against the health care bill…

You republican losers! Who are you going to sue? Our Greatest Smartest Clueless Leader just achieved his first accomplishment, against the will of the people and the Constitution (wait, is it the Constitution or the DoI, Mr. Prez Const. Law Prof.).
You, i.e., the People, useless losers could do nothing now. Our Greatest Smartest Clueless Leader does not care if he is elected again or not next time, as long as you pay. So, obey the Law, which Prez-Against-the-Will-of-the-People will sign tomorrow. If you the People losers don’t pay your new taxes on Wednesday, you will be sent to jail.

Good for Obama – so he won’t mind NOT being re-elected. He’s done it. It’s time he’s moved on to ruin a small island country or something – like a tropical storm.
As far as his popularity: a 40+ percent drop from Jan 09 is not what anyone would call a popular president. He’ll look good for a day or two and then he’ll drop back into the 46-47 range or below.

People hear “Healthcare Reform” and think “oh, yeah, we need that, once I knew this person that had cancer and couldn’t get insurance..” but never bother to read the bill or look into it further. I am sad to say, the more I look into this, the worse I feel about it. Basically – the only thing I see myself and most of my family getting out of it is higher taxes. Sad.
Now that I am paying for everyone else’s insurance, when I see people smoking on the street, I won’t hesitate in telling them to put it out because I pay their insurance. Or maybe I should just tell them not to worry and smoke up because we’ve got ‘em covered.
The problem is insurance cost too much to get – why not have a healthcare reform that gets to the heart of why it costs so much and stop some of the insane lawsuits that hospitals, doctors and insurance companies have to protect themselves from. We need tort reform, not a reform that forces everyone to get health insurance.
I look forward to watching the government try to enforce this – they do such a great job of enforcing everyone to purchase auto insurance.

Re” “Now that I am paying for everyone else’s insurance…”
No you’re not. Everybody has to buy insurance under this plan. The individual mandate applies to everybody. That’s the whole point. To get everybody to pay for their own insurance.

Thank you! As a veteran and a self employed business man, this plan is a godsend. I voted Republican, Independent, and Democrat in the past. I am 43 and needed hip surgery. I fought for nearly 2 years against my Healthcare “provider” who said that it was a pre-existing condition. They dod not look at the fact that I was unable to be active and work out, was gaining weight as a result, or had trouble sleeping. They only saw an operation they didn’t want to pay for. We already pay for the uninsured, so why does everyone choose to ignore the benefits? No pre-existing condition, no dropping the unprofitable, no jacking premiums, managed costs and better record keeping? Of course it’s not pefect. No law is, nor any society. I cringe when I hear people say Obama wants to rule others lives?…what exactly was the opposition to abortion but a narrow minded attempt to rule other’s choices? And who was championing that stance? Republicans and democrats who claim the higher moral ground? Yet thses same elected officials have universal health care? All I can say, is, thank you Mr President! Now go fix campaign finance and the banks please. keep up the good work.

GAG!

Can we stop with the whole “Now I have to pay for other people’s health care” nonsense?
The simple truth is, if you have health insurance now, you’re ALREADY paying for other people’s health care. That’s how insurance WORKS. Ditto for auto insurance, homeowner insurance, or any other insurance you can think of.

Why do so many right-wing folks seem to care more about Barack Obama than what we can do to freaking fix this busted health insurance system? I see all these comments online today, they just obsess over Obama being a one-term president and blah blah blah… None of them discuss proposals that will actually insure 30+ million people or end discrimination and “pre-existing conditions” abuses, its just about Obama and what a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE MAN BARRY MARX SOTERO IS.
By the way, whoever complained about “I’m paying for your insurance now”… a) You honestly must not even be familar with the way insurance pools work already and b) No you are not, people will pay for their own insurance or pay a small fine and go without it. This is how insurers will be able to remain economically competitive and be forced to abide by the new consumer protections in the reform bill.
Unless we had a public insurance option to force premiums down through simple competition, but you folks had to go and shriek your scared little heads off about that little perfectly sensible bit.

That’s because winning an election doesn’t guarantee immediate socialism like legislating it against the will of Americans.
Rasmussen Report still shows a majority of Americans opposed to the health bill.

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the Municipal Water Authority. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined to be safe by the Food and Drug Administration.
At the appropriate time, as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I got into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door, I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the Public School System.
After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local Police Department.
I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on a freerepublic.com and FOX News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can’t do anything right.

Could Obama have been any more arrogant than he was last night? His nose and chin were so far up in the air…you could see up his nose. He outright lied when he said “we heard what the people wanted” and passed this bill. If he truly heard, he would know the majority did not want this bill!

They said that the Titanic wasn’t sinking and that the Trade Center Tower that was hit last..should not be evacuated .. all is well… the tea party does not exist.. we’ll hold the mid terms.. we won’t fund abortions..

Karen, please tell me how those who don’t work, receive a government check everyweek, and don’t pay taxes are going to pay for their insurance? SV is right. We are going to be paying for everyone’s insurance thru our taxes or rate increases. No other way to do it. For the record, I don’t mind helping people who CAN’T but I very much mind supporting people who WON’T.

Posted by: whatsgoingonhere? | March 23, 2010, 9:24 am 9:24 am

It is amazing to me how many people are out there fighting against there own interest. How can a middle and low income person be fighting against healthcare, that is amazing. I am tire of hearing the Republicans talk about how mad the American people are, what American people and what majority? The majority of the people need the change. We understand that there is a silent majority and I believe the President understands that also. There are people working two and three jobs who can’t stop to get involve in Politics, but they need our President to fight for them. So I don’t care what words are being used to identify the haters of healthcare reform, but please do not use the words, “The American People”. Stop it and stop it now!!! I am an American, whether black, white, yellow or red and I am proud of and I support my President.

Jimmy, your 10:39 post was classic! I’m copying it to show to my husband and kids!
Vernon New Jersey, I think the reason why people who would benefit are against this bill is lack of education. Every naysayer I’ve run into is a Fox news watcher. Tune in for just a few minutes and you will feel as if they live in an alternate reality where pesky ‘facts’ have nothing to do with news.
Folks who are against this bill: read some summaries of it on a major news site other than fox. Or read the actual bill if you’ve got the time. It isn’t scary, it isn’t messing with our rights, it isn’t government health care. It is simply putting a limit on insurance industry greed and mistreatment of its customers, by protecting consumers from a lot of bad practices. And lots of other good stuff, like controlling fraud in Medicare to save us all money.
Don’t believe the pundits, they thrive and profit by stirring folks up.

SV, tort reform isn’t the answer, as torts only account for 2% of health care.
