RNC Fundraising Document Suggests Donors Might Be Motivated by ‘Fear’ of President Obama, ‘Socialism’

An internal Republican National Committee fundraising presentation obtained by Ben Smith at Politico  proposes that GOP fundraisers shake the money tree by motivating donors based on "fear" of President Obama. The document also uses the controversial image of the president made up like Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight.

Part of the presentation included a slideshow explaining “RNC Marketing 101," suggesting that direct marketing is based on “Visceral Giving” in which donors can be motivated by “fear,” “Extreme negative feelings toward existing Administration” and “Reactionary.”

Asks another slide: "What can you sell when you do not have the White House, the House, or the Senate …?" The answer is "Save the country from trending toward Socialism!”

The presentation uses the controversial and unflattering image of President Obama as the Joker that conservatives seized upon though it was actually created by a young college student named Firas Alkhateeb who protesting President Obama's appointment of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff since in his view "Emanuel is a fervent anti-Islam voice" and a "Zionist."

Using incongruent canine comparisons, the presentation also likened House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, to Cruella De Vil, the villain in Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to Scooby Doo.

On Morning Joe this morning, former Rep. Joe Scarborough, R-Fla., lambasted the presentation, calling it "childish," "absolutely shameful," and such "bad form and taste that whoever put this together should be fired." The presentation was made by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart at an RNC retreat in Boca Grande, Fla., last month.

RNC communications director Doug Heye told Smith that "The document was used for a fundraising presentation Chairman Steele did not attend, nor had he seen the document. Obviously, the Chairman disagrees with the language and finds the use of such imagery to be unacceptable. It will not be used by the Republican National Committee – in any capacity – in the future.”

DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse today said that "this type of politics at all cost approach to our public discourse is what the American people are sick and tired of – and if anyone thinks this wasn’t approved of or signed off on at the highest levels they are kidding themselves.  Republicans across the country have cheered on crowds where these very images appeared, they’ve encouraged and perpetuated scandalous lies about the President and his plans.  And, from calling for secession to condoning violence against government officials they have sunk to new and unbelievable lows."

Woodhouse says it was "no wonder the RNC reacted with alarm when they learned the American people would see this presentation.  This revealing document proves what the Republican party has long denied.  But now, by their own admission, the express strategy of the Republican party is not to offer new ideas, but ‘fear.’  Republicans can no longer deny that they are peddling fear when they are literally selling it as their path back to power.  It is a sad commentary on the state of the Republican Party that, devoid of ideas and solutions to our nation’s problems, problems created on their watch, that they would resort to these type of tactics. It’s sad. But true."

The White House did not immediately respond to a quest for comment.

There is reason to fear the Obama agenda. The Dems are refusing to find common ground with the GOP, preferring to take the position “you are either with us, or against us”.
That kind of thinking smacks of dictatorship, and control, and does not resemble a democracy.
The Dems have set the tone for this administration, and it is one of great concern for Americans who value democracy.

umm Rick isn’t that exactly how the republicans acted when they had “control”? The same “either with us or against us” mentality? The Democrats have tried every way IMO to work the the republicans and they don’t want to.

I really don’t like the irresponsible dem agenda either but if fear mongering, name calling and the same agenda are in play for the reps you are still not going to get my vote. Put out more of what you’re proposing to contrast policy options.
As far as the Woodhouse/DNC quote dems have and are doing the same exact thing (how many people literally die in the streets every minute without healthcare???? or 46 million every year?????) So quoting from hypocrites (It’s like a domestic dispute not a real discourse.)doesn’t balance your article try looking for more independent voices if you want balance Mr. Tapper.

People really should take a good, hard, honest look at the images in the powerpoint presentation and think about it.
Personally, I can’t see how anyone would want to be associated with that party, which hasn’t strongly condemned the presentation to my knowledge. They’re just hoping their fearful ego-driven donors won’t be offended. And many of them won’t. I see some defending the RNC already, and hoping to spread a little fear to exploit people further.
Its pandering to and exploiting the worst within people, rather than appealing to what is noble, principle-oriented and good.
Sickening.
Its time for new parties. Seriously.

Certainly nothing like the DNC exploitations of class, race, and sexism- something they do shamelessly. I personally don’t understand how anyone can be associated with either of these when it comes to this they are the same in this area the tone really stinks. “Fear?” . . . more like a reality.

Let’s put this in perspective. Anyone who’s done a power point presentation has played around with these figures, no big deal, not unusual.
Secondly, this is not a government official who did this.
Tell me what is NOT evil about Democrats have pulled this past year?
1) trying to FORCE healthcare bill- that doesn’t solve problems-down our throats.
2) trying to FORCE Americans to pay for
others’ Abortions.
3) Charlie Rangel – a High level government official!
4) Pelosi aware of what Rangel was doing but not doing anything about it
5)Etc….
Democrats are in deep trouble so they’re just trying to distract from their REAL problems: LACK OF JOBS,
LACK OF HEALTHCARE REFORM, LACK OF LEADERSHIP IN WASHINGTON.

As I said, we need new parties. Seriously. Problem is that we need those on the left and right to agree to do that at the same time– otherwise we end up with one or the other of the same ole parties back in charge.
But, having said that, I think the RNC certainly exploits race, sex and class in addition to fear. Did you look at those pictures. Moreover, the blame-shift to lower income folks and the demonization of community organizers and unions at every opportunity.
I don’t know… I do think the Democrats are better than the Republicans because of their core ideals and goals, but we do need new parties. Enough is enough.

While Ben Smith and ABC news are laughing about the RNC pointing out how DANGEROUS the modern democrat politician, like Obama is, the AP today is reporting that “a man freed from Guantanamo more than two years ago after he claimed he only wanted to go home and help his family is now a senior commander running Taliban resistance to the U.S.-led offensive in southern Afghanistan, two senior Afghan intelligence officials say.” – Associated Press Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
So who should we fear, the democrats who want to release the remaining GBay customers or the Republicans who want to keep terrorists behind bars?

Posted by: Tom | March 4, 2010, 10:41 am 10:41 am

no big deal, not unusual.
———–
And there it is. Equating grotesque images with sexist and racist undertones to providing citizens with health care, something all other advanced and civilized first world nations have done without being communist countries ruled by tyranny.
I agree Rangel ought to resign, but its not like the Republicans have any higher ground to stand on. Never have, never will.
The Republicans are trying to FORCE Americans to live in a fear-based, backwards country where power and wealth rapidly accumulate and corrupt a few while the many go without.
Time for new parties. Seriously. The apologists for the depraved GOP are ridiculous.

If you want my vote.. Tell me how your going to get this country out of a recession, fix the healthcare system, and unemployment. That’s what matters the most.

I was raised by good Eisenhower Reps. However, my late parents would not participate in the trash that has become the Republican Party. How far the once proud GOP has fallen. I sent Chairman Steele a personal note in my return envelope for a requested donation. The message was “I am now an EX Rep, and never ask for another donation from this household”.

What exactly does this power point presentation show that most Americans don’t already feel anyway? Whether people will openly admit it or not, there is an uneasiness about Obama. Even the National Black Caucus, and other prominent African American groups are souring quickly on Obama. So let’s just stop the race card nonsense now. I’m not one to jump on the bandwagon with the ‘birthers’ and so on, but his wishy-washy indecisiveness about almost any issue makes people wonder about him. It’s not that hard to figure out when you talk to most people that uneasiness is not uncommon when you don’t know that much about someone-and when it happens to be the person in THE most powerful position in the world, yes, that can invoke some type of fear. The Republicans don’t need to point that out, the fear is already there and it’s nobody’s fault but Obama’s.

Yep. And it makes me wonder why anyone bought into the nonsense that Obama didn’t ‘know’ about the fear mongering, hate filled sermons Jeremiah Wright was filling heads with during the 20 YEARS he attended his church. Boy, the double standards just keep on coming.

Not to mention that the current administration effectively used the fear tactic to pass the monstrosity otherwise known as “Stimulus” claiming that ‘the bill MUST be passed for unemployment to stay under 8%’. AAAAAHHHHH…run for the hills…pass the bill QUICKLY…the sky is falling. Oh, wait, isn’t unemployment over 8% now anyway? Silly me.

progressive mama, it shows no more ‘darkness within’ than (as I stated earlier) Jeremiah Wright’s hate filled ‘sermons’ that Obama sat through for 20 YEARS. I’m not saying what the Republicans did is right…it’s not. Far from it. I’m just saying there are alot of people out there who have made up their minds without the help of this power point presentation.
It’s shear lunacy, however, that the same liberals who are appalled, shocked, stunned, etc. at this ‘find’ from the RNC are the same liberals who have no problem with something as horrendous as partial birth abortion. It’s okay to give a woman the right to kill a baby LATE in term, but God forbid should someone have the right to make Obama look like the Joker. Ridiculous.

The hypocrisy on the Right when it comes to right to privacy, religious freedom and civil liberties never ceases to amaze me.
The appropriate analogy would be if the DNC approved of Jeremiah Wright’s rhetoric and mainstreamed it.
If you don’t get it, you don’t get it, I guess.
Btw, I’ve never met ANYONE who has “no problem” with partial birth abortion. Never ever. And if you trot out the campaign talking points without full context on the underlying issues there, you’ll really expose yourself.

In what universe do the people on MSNBC get a pass? Personally, I didn’t condone mean-spirited chatter about Cheney’s heart attack. I can’t stand him but he has grandchildren and I’m sure they know a different side of him.
But Ed Schultz is not the DNC. I don’t care for him– but, ya know, I don’t hear elected representatives on the left bending over backwards to defend him as those on the right do for folks like Limbaugh.

progressive mama: “Equating grotesque images with sexist and racist undertones . . .”
I read through the RNC fundraising presentation and saw the pictures you speak of. There are no “sexist and racist undertones” or themes. I challenge to you point them out specifically. Anytime your poor Democrats get even the slightest criticism, you liberals can’t help but play the race and gender card. When you can’t debate the issues on their merits, you have to resort to such political dishonesty, some might say “fear” tactics. Pot meet kettle.
progressive mama: “. . . health care, something all other advanced and civilized first world nations have done without being communist countries ruled by tyranny.”
It’s socialism they are ruled by. In either case, they can have their mediocre health care that they wait months to utilize. Although, they do so at the expense of their security and economy. Of course, the United States takes care of their security for now, but their economies can’t escape the choking grip of socialism. That’s because socialism is unsustainable long-term. Examples of successful socialist countries aren’t exactly common. In fact, I know of none. Only the ignorant and the malicious would want to move closer to such a failure of an economic model.
Capitalism, on the other hand, has been the economic engine behind the most successful economy and nation on Earth, the United States of America. And, it always will be, provided we stop electing socialists into office.

Their is a lot of distrust and anger in this country. You’re right about that. A whole lot of it is directed at a MAN, not a ‘black man’, whose policies are piling tons of debt onto ordinary, hardworking, citizens. A multi-millionaire, ten times over in a lot of cases, and his family/household will never even notice the debt this MAN is willing to shovel onto ordinary families in this country. This MAN can’t even be bothered to tell us how much this disaster will cost.

Fact is, obamma gave the fear/distrust issue to republicans. Himself. For him to quell that issue now would require a little trust in him. That ship has already sailed. Take a look at the 2010 primaries. Take a look at the local, life-long, democrat pols who ran as republicans. Our local rep vs dem turnout was SIX TO ONE!

I disagree, but I’m not going to give the images more attention than they deserve, by getting into detailed arguments about them. I will say that the Republican party is a huge turnoff for a lot of people, particularly younger people, simply because of their narrowmindedness, race and gender baiting, lack of diversity and fearmongering, before you even get to their platform and positions. Then there’s additional problems. The first election I was eligible to vote in was the one where the Willie Horton ad went up and I’ve been completely turned off since. I would never be associated with them unless they went through a huge metamorphosis, and with their current apologists I don’t see that happening. If you can’t see it that says more about you than me. I find absolutely nothing admirable about the GOP in its current state. Its been a joke since 1988– and probably longer, but that’s how long I’ve been paying close attention and utterly appalled.
I’d also note that there is a difference between socialism and socialized medicine. Might want to look up the economies of European nations and catch a clue. To me, the propaganda sounds like propaganda.

I agree with that much. The GOP has been chipping away at civil liberties and the ideals this nation was founded on, and they do it using Orwellian language. Time to vote them out, and expand the party system to four or more viable parties. Power and wealth tends to accumulate and corrupt.
Unfortunately, we have many citizens who are low information voters and highly susceptible to fearmongering and propaganda.

Certainly approval of obamma and his policies would increase substantially if he ran front page ads throughout the states filled with people who ‘just don’t understand all he wants to give them’. The South and the Midwest.
People have THE RIGHT to disagree with his ‘vision’.
THE RIGHT to question his policies.

I disagree… Look at the emergence of the “the tea Party”. A fringe group coming into the fore front, spouting messages of paranoia and demanding that their country be given back to them – first off, who has “taken” their country from them?. Secondly where was this group when the white house was overseen by Pres. Bush who made the big old mess to begin with. One only has to look at the makeup of the tea party to realise the underlying racial motivations of these people… when you see pictures of the Tea Partiers, do you ever see any minorities in the pictures??? where are they? are they not americans either? And so what if Barack was a millionaire? he is a self made millionaire who came from humble beginnings who worked his ass off to get where he is .. unlike the former president who had a nice namby pamby trustfund to rely on..
There are those that disagree with the president and his policies and thats great because thats the beauty of democracy but it is unfortunate when people dont give him a chance because THEY let racism and fear of change and differences cloud their better judgement
. The only person that doesnt give a rats ass about his race is BARACK OBAMA hhimself. The man has leftist convictions but he also has a consensus seeking temperment aswell which is why he is smart to stay away from the race debate…the mark of true leadership. No one said it was going to be easy, but I applaud for his show of class in the face of so many disrespectful insults to his person, his family, his intellect and race.
