First Lady Michelle Obama Tells Students that ‘Let’s Move!’ Initiative is about Healthy Living, Not Appearances
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: First Lady Michelle Obama told students today that the most important part of her "Let's Move!" initiative to combat childhood obesity is advocating for healthy living and promoting an active lifestyle for the nation's youth and not focusing on appearances. “To see the statistics, seeing that one in three kids in this country is overweight or obese and that we're on track for the first time ever for our kids to live shorter lives than we do. You know, that in and of itself was terrifying enough for me,” the first lady said at a live C-SPAN town hall meeting today with school students. “I wouldn't want that fate for my girls and I don't want it for any of you or any other kids in this country.” This year C-SPAN challenged middle and high school students from across the United States to address what they believe are the major issues of the day with a video project. There were 1,000 student documentarians who submitted videos and 128 of them focused on a health issue. The first prize winner in the middle school category, Matthew Shimura, submitted a documentary that focused on childhood obesity. His project sparked interest at C-SPAN to expand this into a dialogue across the nation with the First Lady and young people Shimura is in middle school at President Obama’s alma mater, The Punahou School in Honolulu, HI. His video can be viewed HERE. Mrs. Obama emphasized familiar points that make up her effort to combat childhood obesity and instill healthy eating and living habits in the nation’s youth – working to educate parents on healthy food and the need to exercise; eliminating “food deserts,” or areas that do not have easy access to affordable healthy food; working with schools to provide students with healthy choices and the opportunity to get out and be active. Earlier this year, Mrs. Obama faced criticism for comments she made about her daughters’ health and Body Mass Index (BMI), which some took to be too focused on weight and body image. Today Mrs. Obama stressed that there is no single ideal height and weight and that her “Let’s Move!” initiative is not about appearance but about good health “What this is all about, really, is about making sure that you guys are healthy, that you're eating the right foods, that you're getting enough exercise,” she said. “This isn't about how you look. This isn't about appearances because we all have to own and be proud of exactly who we are.” The First Lady noted that she stands at 5 feet, 11 inches and has been that height since she was young. “My parents taught me to be proud of the way I look. And this isn’t about how you look; this is about how you guys feel. It's about health.” Mrs. Obama spent about an hour answering students’ questions that addressed the price of healthy food, what schools can do to educate students about healthy eating and living and the role that government can play in this effort. The First Lady stressed that this is not the federal government telling families what to do in their homes and mandating what people eat. She said that the best part of her Let’s Move initiative is that it does not “millions of dollars and legislation” to get it done and they don’t have to count on people in Washington to “pass stuff to move this along.” Attending today’s event were students from three elementary schools that have worked on this issue as well as representatives from local Girl Scout troops and youth ambassadors from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Dialing in from around the nation were C-SPAN in the Classroom member schools. The White House also invited student reporters from publications like National Geographic Kids, Scholastic News, TIME for Kids and ESPN Girl to cover today’s event. -Karen Travers

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Michelle Obama makes a good point. Controlling obesity isn’t about how you look but about being healthy.
The only thing I can add to that, is being your body’s correct weight as well as being physically fit feels great. For instance, it feels wonderful to be able to run up stairs and not get winded. It feels fantastic to run and feel your legs’ resilience. It feels really good to be able to stretch without pain. And it is just pure fun to play physical, simple games with your family like frisbee or dodgeball or go for a hike with them and not have to stop because you are tired.

I agree with the First Lady, they should move right out of the White House, back to Chi-town, hurry 2012.

When Michelle tells us why she got paid so much at the hospital gig and spreads some of her own wealth to help the kids in her own Chi-town tenements, THEN maybe she’ll have some credibility. Until then, she’s just another hypocrite.

I agree we need to get our kids running, playing ball and doing activities that allow our kids to get exercise. We have become a nation of couch potatoes and fast food. However this needs to be a personal choice of individuals and families to decide to get back into shape and live a more active lifestyle. The government intervening in something else is not a good thing.

The Conservative One, I don’t understand your attitude.
You wrote, ‘However this needs to be a personal choice of individuals and families to decide to get back into shape and live a more active lifestyle. The government intervening in something else is not a good thing.’ There is no government mandate about fitness, so why imply it?
If you read the article completely you would have read this: ‘The First Lady stressed that this is not the federal government telling families what to do in their homes and mandating what people eat.’
Michelle Obama is simply encouraging families and children to be more active.Bringing the subject of fitness and healthy eating to the attention of adults and children is important if we are to reduce the huge numbers of health problems that will result if we keep our heads in the sand about the ‘unfitness’ of so many.
To those who want to shape up, just start with a small change each week, one nutritional change and one fitness change and before you know it you will feel much healthier and stronger.
How about a few push-ups or leg lifts during advertisements while watching t.v.? It is fun to track on a calendar how few you start with and then the ability to do more. Kids love this!
Cut back on or better yet eliminate soda and drink water with a splash of real juice instead. It will taste a bit different for a while but then your taste buds will adjust. Sleep is another important factor to health. Getting enough sleep, at least 8 for adults and 10 for kids and teens will add mental zing and a spring to your step all day. Before you know it good healthy habits will seem easy to do every day. You will be not only increasing your chances of a longer life, but the quality of your life will improve many times. It is so much fun to be active, for everyday chores to not tire you out and it is easier to maintain a positive mental attitude despite stress if you get daily exercise, sleep and eat well. Good luck!

I continue to be impressed with the First Lady’s effort, drive, and focus on educating our youth on ways to live healthier lives.
Having an active lifestyle is part of what makes us happy as humans. Eating well and physical movement are critical for a healthy body. The body is meant to move just as the mind is meant to think. I am so glad that Mrs. Obama has chosen to address our nation’s youth in this way. I offer her great support, and hope she continues this effort until our youth understand the importance being aware and responsible for their bodies.

To Lydia: Although there may be no government mandate as of yet, they aren’t staying completely out of it too. Of course Mrs. Obama will say that the government isn’t trying to control the public, but the reality of it is just that. In New York, they have already proposed many tax increases on sugary drinks and other unhealthy options. While, like cigarettes, people are allowed to buy these “harmful” food products, they will be charged. So instead of making healthy food more affordable to those who need it, they’re making unhealthy food too expensive to buy. But when you cant afford the healthy food to begin with then who is this helping?

Michelle gorges herself with lobster and gourmet meals. She has a permanent pastry chief on staff at the White House, but she decrees that the rest of us eat lettuce and apple slices. The thought of Michelle Obama in a thong, can make one wretch and vomit … but, Sarah Palin in a bikini = HOT !!!
