This Week’s Powerhouse Roundtable: George Will, Bill Maher, Rev. Al Sharpton, Katrina Vanden Heuvel and Matthew Dowd

A special roundtable this Sunday on This Week: Bill Maher, host of HBO's Real Time, Rev. Al Sharpton, former Bush political strategist Matthew Dowd, Katrina vanden Heuvel of the Nation, and George Will.

Among our topics: new rules for Wall Street and the bruising Goldman Sachs executives took on Capitol Hill; Arizona's controversial new immigration law; the nation's anti-Washington DC, anti-incumbent mood; and finally, the roundtable weighs in on what some call "nerd prom" — the White House Correspondents Dinner — for reporters, politicians and stars.

You won't want to miss it. Sunday morning.

Only ABC will put Maher (a COMIC) and Al Sharpton (who is only out to get his picture on TV) on a Sunday morning supposendly serious round table show.

Oh Boy!
Katrina Vander Doodle.
She’s fun to watch.
Seriously I’m glad you’re having her on.
I don’t know about Sharpton though.
Isn’t one comedian enough?

Bill Maher and Al Sharpton….yeah, a real powerhouse line-up.

Al Sharpton? Seriously? Talk about stacking the deck against the liberal side of the table.

I hope Jesus returns during the show. I want to see the look on Bill’s face!

What? Did you forget to place a sarcasm tag at the end of that?

Do you think having Al Sharpton on “your team” is a GOOD thing? Most rational progressives I know consider him a camera chasing liability. Would you like to have Orly Taitz (birther) arguing the conservative case?

Posted by: jhw539 | April 28, 2010, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

lets see, a racist bigot, an unfunny comic that thinks he is bigger than he is, and a radicalized left wing extremeist, that can’t put together a coherent sentence….sounds like a segment worthy of MSNBC

Good, interesting crowd, besides George Will– I mean, does that dude ever go away??? He’s not that interesting, ya know. (Unlike others, I happen to think Bill Maher, Al Sharpton and Katrina Vanden Heuvel all are capable of very interesting and insightful, if sometimes provocative, commentary)

“Good, interesting crowd, besides George Will”
Yes, the only intelligent, thoughtful and articulate person on the panel and he’s the one you want gone. Says a lot about you.
jhw:”Would you like to have Orly Taitz (birther) arguing the conservative case?”
Fair enough, although I have never heard of that person. However, I think there is significantly more tolerance and sympathy for the thoughts and views of Sharpton within the liberal ranks than there are for birther views within the conservative ones.

Huuummmmm . . . . but don’t you think the entertainment value outweighs his lack of debating skillz?

Maher? Sharpton? you gotta be kidding me….and libs make fun of PALIN? heh

Posted by: mishernameo | April 28, 2010, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Powerhouse? Really?
With panels like this, ABC’s audience will continue slide to on par with CNN and MSNBC. George Will must really need this job.

Posted by: tjp612 | April 28, 2010, 4:04 pm 4:04 pm

Al Sharpton? I thought he was forever banished to cable news.
Dowd, Will, and Katrina always provide a great conversation on the show and can actually intelligently debate all sorts of issues.
And what will Maher be bringing to the table this weekend? Don’t vaccinate your kids?
3 out of 5 ain’t bad. You’ve had much better left leaning guests on your show instead of Sharpton and Maher.

He’s on every week– and he never says anything new or interessting or offers up a fresh way of looking at things. I enjoyed last week because it wasn’t the same old, same old.
But I know conservatives resist change and embrace the status quo, so carry on… lol.

I like interesting, provocative, outside the box, unscripted conversation– and a little humor never hurts.
I could care less if you take me seriously. I don’t take you seriously. so what?
Shrug.

Posted by: progressive mama | April 28, 2010, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

so progressive, you would rather watch the cast of SNL debate on weekend update then those who actually know what they’re talking about, like a George Will.

Posted by: J.R. | April 28, 2010, 5:02 pm 5:02 pm

Funny Al Sharpton parody on Rush today.
Sharpton: We’re going to keep acting ridiculous until you take us seriously!
LOL

LOL – from all the sighs from Tierra and Progressive, it must be so hard to be a liberal woman these days. Can only imagine how many shoulder shrugs and sighs and just flat out disbelief that someone would have a different opinion when your party isn’t in power.

With Bill Maher on are they discussing legalized marijana or what. Thats all he ever talks about on his not so funny late night.

I don’t think George Will knows what he’s talking about any more than the other guests, and on some subjects, he knows much less, imho. He seems to sniff some pretty rarified air that keeps him rather out of touch.

Its really not all that hard to be indifferent to the opinions of those who strike one as rather dimwitted– which is what the shrug signifies.
Its pretty easy actually.No worries.

Thanks for the heads up, I just removed this episode from my TIVO. There is NOTHING I can learn from Bill Maher or Al Sharpton or the Vanden Huevel dingbat.

Posted by: Sunnyr | April 29, 2010, 1:51 am 1:51 am

Why the hell would anyone watch Bill Maher and Al Sharpton. This used to be a thoughtful talk show. Now it is a farce.

Posted by: Jonathan R Cooper | May 2, 2010, 9:44 am 9:44 am

You are loosing us ABC. Maher is an “entertainer,” and a hack one pony show entertainer at that. You might as well invite Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, or Glen Beck to appear on your panel and espouse their form of entertainment. I thought This Week was a NEWS show. You’re only saving grace ABC, is that David Gregory over at Meet the Press and Face the Nation have such “soft” left leaning shows that it forces me to continue to watch This Week.

Posted by: baughbc | May 2, 2010, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

What a GREAT show! It was very entertaining to see George Will and Matthew Dowd issue an “old-school slap-down” on Bill Maher, the Rev. Al and Katrina (Foot-meet-mouth) Vanden Heuvel!
Thanks Jake!

To George Will: I know you believe this shows needs a conservative view point, but the reality is they never acknowledge your profound comments. My grandmother called it “talking to a fence post.” Please write an article on why Bill Maher is allowed on the show to demonstrate complete and total bigotry with his comments regarding republicans. His refinement was even worse. And the left say the right are bigots? Please!
George, please consider another news outlet roundtable discussion where your thoughts are not lost on trite mionirty dribblers. You are the only person that acutally understood the topic and even when you show them the federal law, they deny its very existence and continue to flame the hostile minority views. The show host lost any control and was incapable of challenging the vial diatribes spewing complete mistatement of the facts only in an obvious attempt to be inflamatory. This is the leftist tactic of the day, forget the facts and inflame the situation to insite riots. Al Shaprton, Jesse Jackson and others used this tactic for years, under the guise of Civil Rights, yet it is clearly Civil Wrong.

Bill Maher clearly demonstrated today that he does not have the level of intelligence required to be on “This Week”! Maher insulted your audience today and ABC News should be quick to apologize for his racist comment or risk losing a significant amount of your viewership. What would Tim Russert Do???

Posted by: Bill Stevens | May 2, 2010, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

ABC owes the American public an apology for allowing Maher to make such an ugly and unessary comment to Mr. Will.
Saying if you are a r*cist then you must be a Republican is offensive.
And shame on you Jake for not standing up to Maher and letting him know that ” we don’t say those types of things on ABC.”
I will Mr. Will had just gotten up and left the studio and maybe Mr. Dowd would have followed him.
Even Glenn Beck would not have been so crass.

Posted by: Carolynn | May 2, 2010, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

Bill Maher exposed himself for what he is… ABC should be congratulated for facilitating the “outing” of Mr. Maher.

Posted by: Moose | May 2, 2010, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Al Sharpton wasn’t much better , predictable don’t let the facts get in the way. This is one of the only ABC news shows I watch , how much longer I don’t know

Posted by: tbwest | May 2, 2010, 3:52 pm 3:52 pm

@Moose: That’s not what Maher said (that Republicans are racist). He said if you’re a racist, you’re more likely to be a Republican. That is, those identifying themselves as Republican have some racists among them.

Posted by: Testy | May 2, 2010, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Everyone is talking about Bill Maher (who by the way was guility of nothing but telling the truth), but no one is talking about the way Al Sharpton and Katrina Vanden Huevel cleaned the clock of the forever pompous George Will concerning the racist Arizona legislation.

Posted by: PinkoBill | May 2, 2010, 4:22 pm 4:22 pm

Someone should have told Maher that you are not supposed to tell the truth on these Sunday shows. What he said was, all conservatives are not racists. But if you do have racist inclinations and you’re a member of one of the two parties, than you’re probably a Republican. I’m a fiscal conservative, but Republicans have to admit that they coddle a relatively small group of racists on the right flank of their base. They depend of these voters and speak code to keep them in the fold. That’s just the way it is and it’s a problem for the party. The first step to recovery, to become a majority party again, is to admit you have a problem. Maher was just telling it like it is and that Washington panel, as gifted as they are, are just not used to someone not dancing around that issue. This is America. It’s okay to have a mostly white-people party. But let’s not pretend is not happening. -Terence

Posted by: Terence | May 2, 2010, 6:30 pm 6:30 pm

He didn’t say all republicans are racists he just said all racists are PROBABLY republicans. Bill was right and if you are unaware of this, then I guess you don’t know any people-this describes to a “T” the MANY republicans that I know and grew up with.

Bill Maher and Al Sharpton and Vanden Hoople? Please! Thank you George will for correcting Bill Maher who wasn’t aware that Brazil is the 7th largest oil user in the world. Next time have Garafalo,Maher, Rev. Al and Al Gore to see who can say the stupidest thing on TV. There isn’t a brain amongst them. It was nice of George and Matthew to not mentally eviscerate the 3 of them.

This week I removed “This Week” from my DVR schedule. The Roundtable with Bill Maher was the last straw. Mr. Will, I humbly suggest that you quietly step back from this train wreck, they can not hear you.

Posted by: sullyz | May 3, 2010, 10:01 am 10:01 am

I am very disappointed in the recent line-up of your Sunday morning “This Week” roundtable. Al Sharpton, Aryana Huffington, and Bill Maher have ruined what was at one time an opportunity for intelligent political discussion. In fact, Maher’s idiotically racist statements this week have taken “This Week” off of my DVR schedule. You have lost what was at one time a considerable sense of credibility.

Posted by: Jay Ankeney | May 3, 2010, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

The show is losing its intellectual edge as a show where intelligent people debate or discuss the priorities of the day. Liz Cheney and Arriana Huffington, or Roger Ailes and Katrina van heuvel? Bring Al Hunt and jeff Greenfield and George Will and David Brooks. They may disagree but at least there would be intellegent arguments made.

Posted by: Patrick | May 3, 2010, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

Two Cheers for George Will! I am not sure how long “This Week” will stay on TV, with quality programing like we were forced to endure Sunday May 2, 2010. I am sure David Brinkley would be proud of what this show has become, a circus.

Posted by: au_tiger8911 | May 3, 2010, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

Jake,
Surely you guys can do better than Bill Maher and Al Sharpton…I use to watch ‘This Week’ for the intellectual stimulation…no longer.

Posted by: Wes | May 3, 2010, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

Maher looked silly and intellectually in over his head. He should stick to scripted comedy.

Posted by: John | May 3, 2010, 5:18 pm 5:18 pm

Bill Maher embarassed himself. Jake Tapper embarrassed ABC by failing to moderate an intellectually honest roundtable.

Posted by: Give up | May 3, 2010, 5:21 pm 5:21 pm

I sit generally on the left of the political spectrum, but I have to say that the producers of This Week should be embarassed to have Bill Maher or Al Sharpton on. Especially Bill Maher. The show has been getting better each week as Tapper has gained confidence, but injecting these nitwits (again, esp. Maher) into the mix really is just–well, I take it as an insult. I won’t watch the next time similar lightweights get booked.

Posted by: CW | May 3, 2010, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Thank you for having Bill Maher on This Week. I thought he was great. Has anyone fact checked the Brazil claim?

Posted by: Amy | May 4, 2010, 9:02 am 9:02 am

I do think that ABC should make it very clear to the millions of viewers of their Sunday AM show that Bill Maher was, in fact, incorrect about Brazil (and a few other things). Obviously (and unfortunately)some people don’t know how (or are not inclined)to search the internet for the facts to find out the truth for themselves. If they could and would, people like Bill Maher would be joining the ranks of the unemployed. And, who did come up with the idea of having 3 extreme left advocates on a single show? Who would give Bill Maher the status of a member of the roundtable? I am going to have to rethink Sunday AM. Will the new host also put together shows like this? Where is the balance? I am very disappointed.

Posted by: missing_George | May 4, 2010, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

Bill Maher and Al Sharpton were WAY out of their league in a table of people who can intellectually opine. George Will must have been so annoyed wasting his time trying to debate with the political lightweight, Mr. Maher. Case in point: Mr. Maher, there are plenty of racists…both Dems and Reps and some in between. Throwing out generalities does not further debate. Sometimes people have different opinions on policy which does not make one racist or evil; however, that term is thrown out WAY too liberally. ABC should consider who is invited to their round-table in the future. Perhaps someone with REAL credentials and not just bomb-throwers like Maher and Sharpton or Coulter … those people should be on a show called “Everyone but me is Stupid, Wrong and/or Wicked”.
