Value Added Tax? Senate Thumbs Down

ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports: FWIW – On Tax Day, and as part of an unemployment benefits extension, Senators also just approved a non-binding, Sense of the Senate amendment written by Sen. John McCain that suggests there should be no European-style Value Added Tax. With the skyrocketing deficit, some big thinkers have quietly been considering the idea. But the White House has not endorsed it or moved toward trying to implement it. The newly appointed deficit commission is said to be considering the idea: Conservatives have been raising alarm bells. If today’s vote is any indication, value added tax proponents would have a tough time on Capitol Hill. The vote? 85 to 13 against.
