Volcanic Ash Forces Obama to Cancel Poland Trip
ABC News' Vija Udenans reports:
With most of European air space closed due to the volcanic ash wafting through the atmosphere, President Obama has decided not to fly to Poland for the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash with his wife and dozens of other Polish leaders on April 10.
Obama called acting Polish President Komorowski and told him that he regrets "not being able to make it."
"Michelle and I continue to have the Polish people in our thoughts and prayers, and will support them in any way I can as they recover from this terrible tragedy," he said in a statement released this afternoon.
"President Kaczynski was a patriot and close friend and ally of the United States, as were those who died alongside him, and the American people will never forget the lives they led," he said.
The U.S. ambassador to Poland will represent the United States at the funeral Sunday in Krakow.
Canadian Prime Minister Harper has also announced that he will not be taking a trans-Atlantic flight to Poland.
Several other countries, including Japan, South Korea and India, have already indicated they will not be able to attend the funeral.
Air Force One had been expected to leave Saturday evening for the overnight flight, and return immediately to the United States on Sunday after the funeral.
The president's travel is being limited just like that of many other people. The Air Transport Association reports that "out of 337 daily nonstop scheduled flights by U.S. carriers between the U.S. and Europe, today 282 originating and departing flights have been canceled as a result of the Icelandic Volcanic activity."

We care and wanted Obama to come though not really expecting much care from our American friends. Our boys in Iraq didnt die for Poland or for better life of the Iraqi people. For what then? For whom…?
Sometimes we prefer enemies than the false friends.

The article title is typically misleading for a left wing news outlet. He CAN come but does want to try because it is too hard. Can’t wait to vote him out of office. To our Polish friends: do not judge us all by the action of our President. Our hearts are with you!

Why yall talkin are u even going to the funersl and he does have a lot at stake. Just like all these other people whose flight were canceled because of the smoke. And just because he’s not your favorite person doesn;t mean he’s going to be dumb enough to risk his life for already dead presidents whom he did show concern for and if you think that is being weak why aren’t you on a plane somewhere just to show others how “brave” you are so stop criticizing Obama for doing what he feels is right. He is not any of u haters. Now GOD be with you and your cruel hearted minds!

If this had happened a few days before you would have had world leaders stuck all over the place going to the nuclear summit.
It would have been an amazing logistical occurance all these world leaders having to navigate with the no fly zone.

Elzbieta, Aristotle would disagree with you: In his theory of the mean, a rational person must choose the middle path between recklessness and cowardice. Given the conditions affecting air transportation, the president cannot recklessly put himself in danger.

I’m pleased the President has made this decision.
To those of you insinuating he is a coward, please do try to remember that the POTUS is not the only person onboard Air Force One. Even if you hate the President and all his administration, try to think about the pilots and other staff that would also be in danger.
This country does not need to add the turmoil of a dead president to all of our other problems.

The ash cloud has been known about since thursday morning.
Obama could have flown in to romania and driven over.
It could have been done. It would’ve involved last minute logistics but it could have been done.
Other world leaders are flying over to neighboring countries and driving over.
But with the security for the u.s president it is different though.

To those saying Obama isn’t very brave, excuse me? How about YOU try and get a flight to Europe at this point. No? I didn’t think so.
It’s unfortunate that the volcanic eruption is preventing people (not just Obama!) from attending this funeral. I’d far rather people be safe on the ground than taking stupid chances in the air and having their planes come down because the engines shut down due to volcanic ash.
Just plain old common sense. I guess not too many people seem to have it – judging from some of these postings. Grow up.

Elzbieta — Please note from the article: “Canadian Prime Minister Harper has also announced that he will not be taking a trans-Atlantic flight to Poland.
Several other countries, including Japan, South Korea and India, have already indicated they will not be able to attend the funeral.”
So I guess lots of countries have Presidents who are not “brave”. What would be accomplished by all these people risking their own lives? Your personal satisfaction???
Posted by: xtch3 | April 17, 2010, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm
Bigger story is Merkel can’t attend because she can’t get back because she was attending Obama’s summit in DC.
Germany is a neighborning country for poland.
Merkel flew from san francisco to lisbon then lisbon to northern italy and now trying to get back to germany and can’t make the funeral.
I’m just ticked that the nuclear summit wasn’t this week it would have been amazing logistical issues to see what airports the world leaders would have used with ireland’s airport shut down where they normally refuel.
Some of them could have used portugal, some could have used morocco but they don’t have the same refueling capacity. And to go around the ash it would have taken more fuel.
The indian president had to fly back through south africa from the summit instead of the normal route.

Sorry Poland. I wish he were able to make it along with the other world leaders who aren’t able to make it. I’m sure Pres. Obama wanted to be there with you all.
I can understand that you didn’t want to delay the funeral so the nation could move on, but it may have made it easier for leaders to attend once the ash cleared a bit.
Regardless, the noble deceased will be in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

Even if he was to attempt to attend, the Secret Service would halt it as a threat to national security. Whether it be Obama, Bush, Clinton the Secret Service would be neglectful in its responsibilty to protect the President at all costs.

OK so you think Obama “isn’t brave”? Maybe he just insn’t stupid?? Do you really want pilots, crew and securtiy people on Airforce One to have to risk THEIR lives in order to prove YOUR president is “brave”!!!Volcanic ash is affecting millions of us ordinary human beings – your president is one of us! God love you.. but please grow up ..The Polish people are far too loving and generous and – sophisticated- (they understand the catastrophic risk of flying jet engines into volvanic ash unlike you!) to “take offence” at Obamas absence!

Ever think he though it would clear by the time he had to fly over like it did in Alaska when they had their eruption. No way of knowing it would still be erupting. There is a very big difference between being brave and being stupid and president Obama knows the difference, apparently some of you don’t.

The ignorance in some of these comments is astonishing.
This is the situation in Europe:
The airspace over Northern Europe is completely shut down.
Rescue helicopters only respond to absolute emergencies, and even then only after an immediate assesment of the air situation.
The airborne part of the “Brilliant Mariner” NATO excercise in the Baltic Sea has been suspended.
All foreign guests who cannot get to Poland by car have cancelled, among others the Queen of Denmark (my country) and the chansellor of Poland’s own neighbour, Germany.
If you blame your president for not going you are either gravely misinformed or you actually want him to die in a plane crash, just like the president who’s funeral he was going to attend.

I suppose no one should be surprised at the ridiculous commentary regarding the President’s bravery. There seems to be a lack of common sense on the part of some of our citizens. Where do they keep their heads?
For God’s sake, the man has been courageous enough to run for and achieve the highest political office in the land in spite of the danger his presence in the oval office brings to his life every day that he is there. What is wrong with you people?
Have you ever traveled on a transcontinental flight? Do you know what danger there is in flying into Volcanic ash? What the hell is wrong with you people? You are poor examples of American intelligence or the lack thereof. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I cannot believe some of you are still criticizing President Obama for not going to Poland for a funeral.
Let me try to spell it out:
There is a natural disaster (aka volcanic eruption up through ice) that is spewing dangerous material miles into the air. The presence of this material has shut down much of Europe’s air space..it is too dangerous to fly…planes will crash…people will die.
The volcano is still erupting; even the best of experts do not know how long it will last, exactly how much more of this dangerous stuff will be ejected, or where it will go. They do know it will get worse before it gets better.
The President of the United States should not place himself or his staff or the flight crew in danger to attend a funeral. The US Ambassador to Poland is in Poland and will represent the USA at the funeral. The USA is not slighting the Polish people in anyway.
Whether you like President Obama or not, I do hope you love the USA. If you do love the USA, you should be mature and intelligent enough to understand that this country does NOT need to add the turmoil of a president’s death to all of our other problems.
Posted by: malcat | April 17, 2010, 8:03 pm 8:03 pm
uh malcat,
where were you when people sent death threats to Bush? where were you when liberals went to so far as to exclaim their death wish for him by sending him shipments of pretzels – after finding out that he had choked on one.
Once again the glaring hypocrisy of the left revealed.

I’m a staunch Republican and downright conservative. There isn’t much President Obama has done that I approve of, and I daily grow more unhappy with him.
But this isn’t about politics. This is about the President of the United States’ safety.
As I said in my post: this country cannot deal with the death of a president right now. The chaos and turmoil that would result could well tear this nation to apart.
And I love the USA too much to want that to happen. Do you?

Well, my grandfather was an immigrant of Poland, my last name was Polish of which I was very proud and also of my Polish Decent. I was very, very upset when I heard of the tragedy that Poland had to endure, loosing their President. I had worked for a Major Airline for 20+ years and if the airspace is dangereous and unsafe to fly in, such as with the volcanic ash, there is no way that our President could fly safely to Poland. I don’t feel that he should be critized for his actions. I know first hand what the dangers are of flying into Volcanic Ash having worked in Maintenance for the Airline that I worked for. I’m sure that he isn’t the only world Leader not attending, and I don’t feel that he should be ridiculed for not attending Poland’s President’s Funeral.

Huh,I don’t think this volcano is saving ANYBODY any money. If this goes on we are going to see a financial hit the likes of which we have not seen since 9/11.European travel is paralyzed-the European markets are going to crash this week if this continues. What “recovery” we may be in could very well come to an end.

It was very rude to cancel the trip to Poland. If Obama didn’t want to go why he declared that he would go? And don’t say that a flight was dangerous. It was confirmed that flying on the height about 3000 meters is safe. Obama just as leaders of other european countries had a great excuse to cancel it and that’s the truth. Volcanic ash was also above the teritory of Russian Federation but the russian president was able to come. He should have gone

President Obama spent the day golfing? I think it would have been more appropriate for him to:
1. Attend church and say a prayer for all the victims of one of the greatest tragedies in Polish history.
2. Stop at the Polish Embassy to share his thoughts and support in their condolence book as Vice President Biden and Secretary Clinton have already done.
3. Invite prominent Polish-Americans or Polish residents and dignitaries over to the White House.
4. Do anything not involving publicly playing games on a day of mourning for an allied country that recently lost the bulk of their leadership in a horrible accident.
5. At the very least, show the awareness to do anything recreational indoors and privately (like a basketball game at the White House away from the media) or just spend a nice day with his family and kids.
Choosing to golf instead on such a day was surprising. Very surprising.
Posted by: Mr_Illinois | April 19, 2010, 4:38 am 4:38 am
Well said, My Illinois, but don’t expect your ex Rep from Chicago to care about appearances like playing more golf in 1 year then Bush did in 8, or doing so during a Country Leader’s Funeral to matter to him, or to places like ABCNEWS, which did’nt even MENTION what he decided to do during the funeral!! The President’s behavior (as it often does!!) reminds me of a joke: A man and a friend are playing golf one day at their local golf course. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer.
His friend says: “Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You truly are a kind man.”
The man then replies: “Yeah, well we were married 35 years.”

Kaczynski posthumously drove a nail into the coffin of the EU
by Dusan Streit
The empire dealt itself a blow. Now Poland knows that it is just a province. President Kaczynski sent his most important message from the grave. He put a stamp on his eurosceptic views. He made the Poles open their eyes to see what the position of this 40 million member of the European Union really is.
Of all the EU leaders only Jerzy Buzek took part at the funeral; a funeral that was not only a commemoration ceremony of the President, but also a national tragedy for all Poles. Jerzy Buzek, the Polish President of the European Parliament, could organize his trip, however he remained alone. When we add that the leaders, especially the leaders of those states that are the engine of European integration – notably Germany and France – were absent, we can see a clear and offensive message.
All Kaczynski’s doubts regarding the Lisbon Treaty could not have a stronger effect than this gesture. The alibi, the Icelandic volcano issued to the European leaders, is insufficient. If any of the main protagonists of the modern European empire died, the others would go to the funeral even riding a horseback, as it used to be in the past. Now, all these leaders have convenient, fast, and safe limousines with right-of-way blue lights on the tops, but they decided to make it clear who is the master – and who is the vassal.
