The White House is prepared for the Supreme Court vacancy announce by retiring Justice John Stevens, White House sources tell ABC News.
President Obama has a list of fewer than 10 possible nominees — Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Judge Diane Wood, and Judge Merrick Garland are on the list, sources say — to review.
Some of the names (like the three just mentioned) were on the list for the last opening on the Supreme Court, others are new.
The president will review the nominees, read their legal writings, perhaps meet with some of them. A decision will be made "in the coming weeks," a senior White House official told ABC News.
White House officials anticipate that whomever the president nominates a fierce partisan battle will ensue. The fight over Sotomayor was contentious and she ended up getting more than 70 votes.
