I think the GOP would have difficulty filibustering a nominee without a really good reason.

Realistically Stevens is a liberal judge. Obama is a liberal President who will more than likely replace him with another liberal judge. This really won’t change the balance of the court and we’ll still see 5-4/4-5 decisions, with Kennedy being the swing vote.
Only concern at the moment is how long it will take to get the person confirmed.
To get the 60 votes the selection has to be moderate enough to get either Scott Brown, John McCain, Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins to approve. Shouldn’t be too difficult. Easier if he decides to make a choice to play towards a semi-moderate constituancy with his selection.

I hope Obama picks the most radical nominee he can find. Well, radical to ordinary Americans, normal to him and the other progressives.
Ordinary mainstream Americans are fed up. But we really should thank Obama for exposing the left for who they really are. Obama used his best snakeoil to get elected.
But the people won’t dare be fooled again.

Can’t wait for the filibuster. Obama could nominate Newt Gingrich and the Republicans would be up there claiming he was a radical communist who had to be blocked!
