FLOTUS to Food Manufacturers: Cut 1 Trillion Calories Annually by 2012

From Sunlen Miller:

With the goal to reduce 1 trillion calories in food sold annually by 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama announced a private-sector partnership for her Let’s Move! Childhood obesity campaign.

Mrs. Obama touted that the Partnership for a Healthier America has signed an agreement with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF)  – a partnership between 16 corporations that account for roughly 20-25% of the American food supply.

“I am thrilled to say that they have pledged to cut a total of 1 trillion calories from the food they sell annually by the year 2012, and 1.5 trillion calories by 2015,” Mrs. Obama said from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building today, “They’ve agreed to reformulate their foods in a number of ways, including by addressing fat and sugar content, by introducing lower-calorie options, and by reducing the portion sizes of existing single-serve products.”

The partnership will be expected to come forward with specific commitments to reduce sugar and fat in their products within six months. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is going to serve as an independent evaluator as these companies work towards that goal.

“This commitment represents a major step forward to providing Americans with healthier choices so that they can choose to lead healthier lives,” the First Lady said, “This is precisely the kind of real private-sector commitment that we need. “

Mrs. Obama says that she hopes that more companies will follow suit, and “step up to the plate” to help tackle childhood obesity problems.

Firstly, no one elected the FLOTUS to govern. Secondly, get out of our lives for crying out loud.

I agree with Kathy, we are tired of the two busybodies at the White House telling all Americans how to live their lives. How about the real threat to America? Iran with nuclear weapons aimed at America soon.

Maybe she could talk to her husband
and match the calorie reductions to
the debt reductions. Mind your own
damn business Mrs. Obama, no one elected
you to make changes to our lives. Your
husband is doing enough damage for the
two of you !!!!!!!!!!!!

Want to help reduce childhood obesity? One way is to stop allowing Food Stamps to be used to buy candy, cake, cookies and ice cream.

The right wing wastes its time fighting for their freedom for them and their kids to be FAT. And badmouth the First Lady at the same time.
Listen, just be FAT if you want to be and let the rest of the country get on with getting healthy.

Oh my lord, I bet you all haters of the first family are “Christians” too.
Please go ahead and tell all your grandparents to stop taking the communist SS checks and that Medicare “socialist” benefits right out of their lives!!!

Posted by: Maritza | May 17, 2010, 7:38 pm 7:38 pm

Dear Martitza- I so love how the first program to attack is Social Security and Medicare. It’s not an entitlement. It’s something that people have paid into “the system” their entire lives. I’m quite sure, myself included, that folks would take a cash payment for EVERYTHING they have paid into the “system” and never require a dime from our beloved government. The same with Medicare. Give us what we paid into it and we will all walk away friends. If you want to start talking about cutting “entitlements”, let’s start with the welfare and housing subsidies. That’s where the cuts should begin.

That’s the way ‘communism’ works, people pay into the government and the government doles it out – and yes, its an entitlement program.

Tierra, why do you need the government’s
help to eat right????? For God’s sake
its pretty simple but you have to turn
everything into a grande cause. Thats
the trouble with you libs, no common
sense. Want to lose weight, eat less
and excercise. That did not cost me a
dime to say it or for anyone to know
thats the way you watch your weight.

let’s start with … housing subsidies.

Tierra- if you mean that I’m “entitled” to my own money, then fine. It’s an entitlement program. Otherwise, give me what I’ve paid into it. From my perspective, it’s MY money.

Data from 5 prospective studies estimate the number of annual deaths attributable to obesity among US adults is approximately 280,000. Per year.
So trying to help kids from growing into this early death makes Michelle Obama somehow “bossy” or a “busybody”? You right wing nuts would go berserk if a terrorist killed 280,000 in one year and our President (or his wife) did NOTHING. Get real.

Posted by: kathy | May 17, 2010 7:54:50 PM posted “From my perspective, it’s MY money.” When put money into a bank, it is “your money”. Sorry, but the Social Security system is nothing like that – there is no “account” in the traditional sense.
The money you paid into the system is designed to be immediately paid out to the people who are currently getting Social Security checks. A retiree’s Social Security benefit is calculated using a complex formula rather than a bank account balance.
And, when the Social Security system takes in more money than it pays out, it buys U.S. Treasury bonds with the surplus. Essentially, the federal government (in the form of the Social Security Administration) loans the surplus to itself.
Clearly, some people don’t like this idea. They want to stuff the money under a mattress, or invest it with those trustworthy Wall Street boys. But for now, Tierra is correct – it is one of those “socialist” programs, originally designed to help all Americans.

Posted by: green.goddess | May 17, 2010, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

Kathy: One of my hobbies is to write cook books, so I post under the name of a salad dressing. LOL. I’ve learned the hard way that “presumption” is the mother of all fallen cakes and mis-information.
But, here’s an idea. If you are worried about “tax revenues”, why not promote Federal Immigration Reform? A 2009 UCLA study showed if we had used a LEGAL worker program for the estimated 12 million illegals employed in the U.S., we would have added more than $1.5 TRILLION to our economy over the last 10 years.
See, there’s no reason American’s cannot find ways to make things better even if our politics don’t follow the same path.

If you want to cut calorie consumption, pattern food stamps after the WIC programs. Only allow food stamps to be used on certain kinds of wholesome foods rather than on soda, candy, pre-processed foods, etc. A large number of our population is on food stamps and a large portion of the $ is wasted. If you have any doubt, just watch the check-out lines at your local grocer on food stamp day.

They can cut everything they want out of the packaged foot. But WE don’t have to buy it. Michelle should use her time for educating ignorant Mothers on nutrition and learning to say NO to their fat kids. pfft! What a joke.

Given their worldwide distribution, that works out to a reduction of about the equivalent of 3 or 4 Hardee’s meals per year per person.
Feel healthier already?
Repeal Obamacare and leave people to make their own choices.

The fact is, FDR sold Social Security to the American people as a retirement account that would be there for their retirement.
At the same time, his lawyers were in court telling the court that it was Constitutional because it was ACTUALLY just a tax that would go into the general fund.
The American people were lied to, and since the money goes into the general fund, Congress has been stealing from that ‘retirement money’ for decades for their pork give-away programs to buy votes for themselves.

“initiated when he and the Republicans had the majority in Congress. The Republican right are hypocrites.”
Wow, tierra you act as if the folks from the right commenting on this board think this subsidy was a good thing. I highly doubt it.
As far as this pledge from the first lady, its non-binding and most likely a good thing. The companies involved aren’t stupid. The country is trending in this direction as far as processed foods go anyway, why not get some good press from it.
Do I think this solves the obesity problem, heck no. A lot of that needs to come from parents, but some are too ignorant of what they buy and then just can’t say no to fatty junior. Cut all the calories from the manufacturers you want, its not going to stop over consumption by the consumers.

The message of this campaign is very clear – that we as a society and as parents and families need to address the problem of obesity.
It’s gained a tremendous amount of attention already – and cooperation from some major corporations.
Good on the First Lady.

Posted by: tierra | May 18, 2010, 1:32 pm 1:32 pm

This calorie cut-back by the food industry is a very good thing.
I am so glad that Michelle Obama is making our obesity problem a real focus of her time as our First Lady. With a little education about food, some changes in the food industry’s ingredients and good examples of ordinary fitness in daily life, we can turn this around.
okie, I like your idea of limiting food stamps to healthier foods. Maybe a little brochure on how buying the raw ingredients saves the food budget big dollars would help, too. From a personal point of view, going vegetarian a few dinners a week can save a lot of money, as well as being healthier if you watch the fat calories.
Once problem for inner city food shoppers is the quality of produce in those stores is sub-par in many cities. This should be investigated and corrected.

Posted by: Lydia | May 18, 2010, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

I think Mrs. Obama needs to focus on her own kids and stop telling us how to raise ours. Her kids got fat when she was working too much and her mother was watching the kids. Now she feels guilty that her kids got fat and is taking it out on the rest of us.
Big Brother wants to monitor your kids’ BMI. And soon they’ll fine you if your kids get too fat. Where does the nanny state end?

Posted by: DaveMN | May 18, 2010, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

Posted by: DaveMN | May 18, 2010 5:26:46 PM: “Where does the nanny state end?”
Dave: Back in the 1930′s Great Depression, kids were coming to school hungry and malnourished. Many States and cities adopted legislation, some of them including (horrors)TAXES, to enable schools to serve noonday meal to students.
But the real “Nanny State” for US kids started when President Harry S. Truman began the Federal school lunch program in 1946. Why? IT WAS A MEASURE OF NATIONAL SECURITY. He read a study that revealed many young men had been rejected from the World War II Draft because of medical conditions caused from childhood malnutrition.
So now, our nation has a new problem: fat, malnourished kids. It is NOT just a matter of “responsibility and choice” that will solve the problem. Again, this is becoming a matter of national security. Wouldn’t you rather have healthy, fit kids who can become the next generation of soldiers and taxpayers?

Posted by: green.goddess | May 18, 2010, 8:41 pm 8:41 pm

We’ve done it in the past, therefore we should do it in the future.
Great logic there, dressing lady.

Posted by: DaveMN | May 18, 2010, 11:53 pm 11:53 pm

So Dave, in your logic, the better choice is to do nothing about this problem as a nation?
Should we just leave it up to individuals who clearly have not been successful at stopping the wave of diabetes or obesity related diseases that are crippling our health care system costs?
Kids don’t have the luxury of time. They are subjected to their parents’ lack of knowledge or food industry poisons as they grow up to develop diabetes.

I will be significantly decreasing my consumption of ALL products made by the so-called Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation. Their 1.5 Trillion calorie gimmick is a smokescreen to charge the same price for less product while sucking up to the political elite.
I like their frozen diet meals. I have 12 in my freezer right now that are made by ConAgra, Nestle and Heinz. Average 250 calories per entree. Great for when you don’t have much time to prepare a light meal. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay for an 8 ounce bag of potato chips when the same price used to get me 10 ounces – and I will find substitutes for the Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones brands.
Your low-calorie diet meals AND your snack foods are BOTH scratched from my shopping list. I will encourage others to do the same.
