GOP Pounces on Terror Arrest: ‘Mistake’ if Terror Suspect Read Rights

ABC's Z. Bryon Wolf reports: Republicans on Capitol Hill are laying the groundwork to make a political issue of the arrest of Faisal Shahzad. Appearing this morning on Imus, Sen. John McCain, who criticized the Obama administration when the underwear bomber was immediately read his rights and charged in federal court, said it would be a mistake for Shahzad, a naturalized citizen, to be his read rights. "Don't give this guy his Miranda rights until we find out what it's all about," McCain said, according to reports. He argued that that reading Shahzad his rights would be a “serious mistake.” So was Shahzad Mirandized? We don’t yet know. A DOJ official declined to say. The Minority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell was more innocuous on the Senate floor at about. “Hopefully the appropriate officials are using this opportunity to exploit as much intelligence as he may have about his overseas connections and any other plots against Americans either here or abroad,” said McConnell. His use of the word hopefully implies he doesn’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that the appropriate officials are using the opportunity to exploit as much intelligence as possible. But McConnell does not yet know. Congressional leaders have not yet received a briefing on the arrest of Shahzad, according to Senate staffers. That briefing would likely occur very soon. So stay tuned.

Yeah more grandstanding by the GOP. Let the administration bring justice to this fellow. Besides we certainly don’t read Pakistani civilians their rights before we drop a Hellfire on their heads. It should be interesting to learn of this guy’s motivations. I think it is pretty obvious though.

I am so reassured by the Republicans confidence in the government they helped build the under G. W. Bush, and continue to participate in under President Obama. I doubt that the proceedures for arresting criminals/terror suspects has changed much since 2001. But leave it to the GOP to assume the worst.

The president ended his remarks about the Times Square incident by saying that “New Yorkers have reminded us once again how to live with their heads held high. We know it’s the aim of those who try to carry out these attacks is to force us to live in fear thereby amplifying the effects of their attack. But as Americans and a nation we will not be terrorized. Will not cower in fear, we will not be intimidated. We will be vigilant, we will work together, and we will protect and defend the country we love to ensure a safe and prosperous future for our people. That’s what I intend to do as president and that’s what we will do as a nation.”
McCain has a right to criticize the President, that’s kinda his job, but Obama is the one who brings us together, and that is really when our country is the strongest.

Amy, you must be joking–Obama is the most divisive and polarizing POTUS in history

It seems like Congressional Republicans only care about the Constitution when it’s easy and suits their purposes. Upholding the Constitution when it’s easy doesn’t say much about character, only when it’s not easy.

Now obama is for protection of all of the American people, and any income level – Whow! Must be close to mid term election time. I remind all, that
liberal democrats, view the “Constituation” as a living document. Out of touch with the present
and must be changed, to put us in step with the European model of government.

It is chilling that Republican radicals like McCain are openly advocating for the basic Constitutional rights of an American citizen to be ignored simply because he is supposed to have engaged in “terrorism.” As much as we hate what the guy did and who he associated with, he is an American citizen. That right is sacred.

We have radicals in both parties. So happens that the radical left is in control of our governmant now, and see and believe that illegals, should and will be treated as American citizens.

If I recall correctly, John McCain recently introduced legislation that would PROHIBIT terror suspects from being read the Miranda warning. Wonder where that went?
GAR, you are correct in part, but fail to see that the massive influx of illegals occured during the Bush years when we were supposedly being more vigilant than ever. Please look at this DHS document and realize 5 years were under Republican administration.
There is no difference. Remember Ronald Reagan’s solution to the same problem? Make them all legal.
