Mexican President Rebukes U.S. Law at White House: Arizona Immigration Law ‘Is Forcing Our People to Face Discrimination’

Mexican President Felipe Calderon took the unusual step Wednesday morning of criticizing an American law while visiting the White House, saying cooperation is needed to fix the US-Mexican immigration issue but "such laws as the Arizona law that is forcing our people to face discrimination. If we are divided, we cannot overcome these problems."

President Obama welcomed Calderon and Mexican First Lady Margarita Zavala this morning with a hearty, “bienvenidos” during a ceremony on the South Lawn marking the start of a full day’s worth of events culminating in a formal state dinner this evening, President Obama’s second.

The Arizona law has not yet taken effect, but the president has voiced repeated opposition to it and Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department is looking into how it will be implemented to ensure against racial profiling, though last week Holder told a congressional committee that he had not yet read the law. (A Justice Department spokesman later said that Holder had been “thoroughly briefed” on the law, which has since been amended.)

President Obama did not specifically mention his opposition to the Arizona law, though White House officials say it will be a topic of discussion during the two leaders closed-door meetings throughout the day at the White House.

“Mexican-American families have been here for centuries,” President Obama said, noting “our proud tradition as a nation of immigrants, all of whom strengthen our American family and who join us today. Working together, we have built upon these bridges.  We've forged a new era of cooperation and partnership between our countries based on mutual interest, mutual respect and mutual responsibility.”

The Mexican President said a safer border needs to be created but one that unites, instead of divides. He spoke in Spanish; the translation was provided by the White House.

With a nod to President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign slogan, President Calderon, speaking in English closed on an optimistic note.

“Can we build that future of prosperity we want for our people?  Yes, we can, if we work together.”

-Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller

Well those people could always leave. That would solve your issue and ours!

“President Obama said, noting “our proud tradition as a nation of immigrants”
We are also a nation of laws and there is a reason the one (law) in AZ targets “illegal” immigrants. The left’s only option is to continue their disregard the “illegal” part and then try and lump them into a discussion on immigration. Its a tactic that has worked in the past but more and more Americans are seeing through their charade.

One more thing, can our press please do a better job of highlighting Mexico’s immigration policy when we hear stuff like this for their president:
“a safer border needs to be created but one that unites, instead of divides.”
Can someone from ABC attempt to ask him to explain how the AZ law differs from the Mexican ones pertaining to illegal immigration? One answer we surely wouldn’t get is that the Mexican laws are harsher. Its a felony to be an illegal immigrant there.

Easy to correct the problem, ALL illegals (no matter what country) have 30 days to get out, or face imprisonment, oh I forgot, prison is better then their own country.

I think we need to control our illegal immigration problem for a number of reasons. Coming from a liberal, that might sound strange to most on both sides of the political aisle. (But why I feel that way requires more explanation than there is room for here.)
The real problem with the Arizona law is it opens the door to discriminating against legal migrant workers and U.S. citizens who look Mexican or South American. This could be eliminated by changing the law to read that everyone who is stopped for any legal reason has to prove their citizenship. I’m all for a national identity card but in the meantime a driver’s license that is actually checked to be legitimate would work. For those who don’t drive, the DMV in my state and perhaps others, provides photo i.d. cards with proof of citizenship.
It is already in the law that those temporary guest workers have to keep their papers with them at all times.
And honestly, I don’t know anyone who leaves the house without i.d., even to go running, as it would be needed if there was an emergency room visit. (Everyone should have i.d. on them as it can save your life if your health records can be retrieved from computers quickly. And I know it sounds cruel, but you receive better care in some hospitals if you have proof of health insurance, too. If you need further convincing, notifying your family quickly if you are unconscious is another important reason to carry i.d. as well as contact info.)
So let’s all do the patriotic thing, not make a fuss about carrying i.d., so we can make strides on one aspect of the illegal immigration problem, by giving our police the tools and rules to identify without discriminating, those who don’t belong here.

can someone ask him if he knows why people cross the border illegally, daily, by the hundreds, to flee mexico? and if he is so worried about how illegal immigrants are treated in Arizona, why does he have even tougher laws in Mexico? Also, if he is so concerned about the welfare of Mexicans who flee to Arizona illegally, why doesn’t he do more to keep them in Mexico? Also, if he wants the AZ law abolished, can someone ask him if he is willing to reimburse the states who spend BILLIONS on illegal immigrants?

Felipe Calderon, what a tool!
Listen up dude, take care of your own country and leave American laws to the Americans. I have an idea for you. Why don’t you start instilling the same capitalism that made America great in Mexico? Felipe, isn’t it odd that your country, which is only about 25 years younger than the USA, is about 75 years behind? I wonder why that is?
Isn’t the solution making Mexico as great a country as the USA?
Get to work buddy, and stop looking at how green the grass is over the fence.

Calderon’s nation is being torn apart by a drug war financed by US consumers. He deserves a bit of respect.
Both his and Obama’s comments were pretty standard diplomatic fare. I would love for anyone to QUOTE the apologizing.

Posted by: jhw539 | May 19, 2010, 11:46 am 11:46 am

Lizzie, I like some aspects of your idea to give 30 days to leave the country for any illegal. It works for libraries with those with long overdue library books, if there are no penalties or fines.
The time frame needs to be longer, as some have property to sell, and local economies could adjust better if it was gradual, but I think a 6 month period of free transportation home might get quite a few illegals to go, especially if they face fines, if they are still here after the 6 months are up. (jail time, even for repeat offenders, is questionable as each prisoner costs tax payers $30,000 to $40,000 a year)
Honestly though, if the jobs dried up, most would go voluntarily. That’s where we really need the huge fines, for employers who hire illegals. Also, giving employers huge amounts of community service hours would discourage repeat offenders. Something like 200 hours a year, years tacked on for each employee hired. The punishment has to be harsh enough to make these greedy, unpatriotic people not want to take the risk.

Sorry Lydia, but that is the same foolhardiness that makes TSA agents search 82 year old Grandma Iowa who is traveling back home with her Grand-Daughter in tow. There really is no good reason to be so PC.

So, Calderon proposes to change US Federal Immigration Law for Mexicans only? ..hmmm, sounds like invasion to me. Arizona is just doing job federal government won’t do. There is no single word in AZ US Federal Immigration enforcement by local police law about need for racial profiling to find out who moved to US illegally. I would suggest to presedente Calderone to work on making Mexico less hostile to Mexicans since they flee to US.

“This could be eliminated by changing the law to read that everyone who is stopped for any legal reason has to prove their citizenship”
It’s not like the law states only those of hispanic decent will be asked for their immigration status or verfication of such. In fact the law stipulates against such actions. I think you may be reading coverage of the law spun by those who are against it.

Yes, Mexico’s problems can be laid at the feet of the U.S. How enlightening. This explains all of Mexico’s ills. I would love for marijuana to be legal tomorrow, so by your logic would that solve the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico?

Posted by: J.R. | May 19, 2010, 11:59 am 11:59 am

President Calderon – plesae look in the mirror at your own immigration policy for your neighbors to the south. It’s not too nice, is it? You treat undocumented immigrants as felons and they are repeatedly abused by Mexican law enforcement. Your government is corrupt. But please, continue to blame Arizona’s immigration policy for your troubles.

Posted by: Aaron | May 19, 2010, 12:02 pm 12:02 pm

Calderon has real “chutzpah”! How DARE he criticize Arizona!!!! Calderon is a guest in our country and he is trying to tell our country, and Arizona how to “run their house”! Insulting too, that he chastises us for our “harsh” immigration stance when his own country has been condemned by Amnesty International for the treatment of illegals in Mexico coming in from Central and South America.
Calderon needs to go back home, learn a little English and to remedy the decades of corruption in his own country.
Obama is a tool. He bows down to anything and anyone who spouts anti-American rhetoric. Obama you are a one term president and maybe, just maybe you will be impeached for not protecting the American border and her people!

Lydia, 30 days is more then ample, I moved across the ocean with 3 kids in 3 days when my job required it, plus we already have laws that say employers will be fined if they hire illegals. But noone enforces that law, democrats always tell us its the republicans when in reality its the democrats that count on the illegals for their support.

I am a 53 year old white woman from a small town in the midwest. What kind of discrimination was I facing when I was stopped for a tiny broken taillight and the officer took not only my license but the license of my son who was in the passenger seat? We were detained for 45 minutes while the officer ran our names. No ticket was issued. It happens to everyone these days and it is getting worse no matter what color or culture you are.

I would like to remind ABC and all other MSM’s that this debate is about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Arizona does not have an immigration law. Only the US government can have an immigration law. Arizona’s law simply gives local law enforcement to the ability to enforce the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION laws that the US government already has on the books. This isn’t an immigration debate. It’s an ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION debate.

President Calderon NEEDS illegals here in the U.S. They send $20 BILLION a year to Mexico. If he were concerned about their safety, he wouldn’t let them cross the desert with COYOTES…would he?
AZ law is just like..CA law and Federal law. I agree with the added enforcement, just the news of it will have many self-deport. Continue the crackdown on employers and those low-wage, OFF THE BOOKS jobs will go away.

Posted by: Original Pechanga | May 19, 2010, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

Mr. Calderon, maybe you should do a better job of policing your border with the US to make sure and keep your own citizens from illegally entering other countries. Better yet why don’t you focus on trying to make Mexico a place people don’t risk life and limb to leave but can grow and prosper and not be subject to corrupt governments at the mercy of drug cartels.

Posted by: GO | May 19, 2010, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

If they live in America, aren’t they “OUR” citizens, not his? When a person applies to become a citizen, one of the requirements is to denounce their previous country of origin and pledge allegiance to our country. It also requires assimilation of the American society (speaking English, learning American history, etc.). That’s what most illegals will never do.
I say let him take “HIS” people home with him. But then again, he would need to be RESPONSIBLE for them finding work and providing for their family. One of the main reasons Mexicans sneak into America.

I hope Obama asked Calderone about the 3 headless bodies in Juarez that were found this past weekend. Look at Mexico’s immigration policy. Illegals sneaking over Mexico’s southern border have been killed, especially if they look or dress like they’re from El Salvador.

Many of the people who illegally come to the U.S. from Mexico are undesirables in Mexico. The president of Mexico is glad to get rid of them because that means there are fewer people filling up the prisons and living off of charity. Obama and the progressives see potential voters and ratioalize giving these people cradle to grave state assistance as the price they have to pay to get people who are simpatico to having them in office.

Shut up, Calderon! Fix your own corrupt, impoverished, crime-ridden land before you start lecturing us from our own soil. Then your people won’t have to come here just to survive. Your biggest interest as head of state is to export your poor to the US, where they can actually find jobs—and then send BILLIONS of dollars each year back home to Mexico to keep your crooked nation afloat financially!
Like China and Iran, Calderon knows weakness when he sees it. That’s why he knows he can get away with criticizing American law while on the White House lawn. Obama probably applauded while Felipe spouted off.
How about correcting your own brutal treatment of immigrants who come across Mexico’s southern border before insulting us?!?!

Here’s the thing…Either you enforce the law for ALL or you disband all law enforcement period…If your stopped for a traffic violation, you must present your ID/DL and proof of insurance, if you do not have proper ID/Insurance you should not be driving putting everyone at risk on our roadways because of your irresponsibility…Now if you are discovered to be in the country illegally, by the officer, the Federal Government is now required to step in and the local law enforcement is now under the microscope of the Feds. This law does not override Federal Law but requires Federal Law to be enforced by presenting the infraction to our Federal Authority which now puts our Federal Government in accountability (that is why DC is not liking this new Arizona law, they can no longer ignore our immigration problem, not helpful come election time when the Latino vote is needed) ..I am hoping beyond hope that this DOES go all the way to the Supreme Court and puts this debate at an end…Bring it on. This law will be found to be Constitutional..

When Gore lost in 2000, the Dems cried for use of the popular vote. When healthcare didn’t look like it was going to pass with 2/3 majority, Dems cried for an up-down majority vote. Yet when 60% of the country likes something, like this law, they want to fight it. Give me a break.
We have too many poor already in this country. We should enforce our immigration laws and only let in people that will help our society. The Dems wants all the poor so they can give ‘em entitlements and increase their voter base. They’ve exploited the poor and minorities for years under the guise of helping them.

I agree that President Obama has gone too far now. This is about illegal immigrants, not the legal ones. Illegal immigrants are exactly that! Illegal! Which means if they are here illegally, then the police are obligated to arrest them and have them deported. Our President seems to think that he can ignore the law and make a joke of it. I just can’t imagine that. Our President should step down or better yet be impeached for not upholding the law. Arizona is doing the right thing.

2. All ballots will be in this nation’s language.
3. All government business will be conducted in our language.
4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are

5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office
6. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food
stamps, no health care, or other government assistance programs.. Any burden
will be deported.
7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least
equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
8. If foreigners come here and buy land… options will be restricted.
Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens
naturally born into this country.
9. Foreigners may have no protests; no demonstrations, no waving of a
foreign flag, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his
policies. These will lead to deportation.
10. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted &,

When you demonstrate a commitment to ending the illegal invasion of our nation, when your nation begins to respect the laws and borders of others instead of encouraging more crime, more human trafficking, maybe then there will be some merit in your meddlesome opinions.
When people ask permission first, then follow the legal process for entry, there is NO PROBLEM.

““Mexican-American families have been here for centuries,” President Obama said” No they haven’t. This man is so ignorant he’s dangerous. He really needs to learn his history.
“The Mexican President said a safer border needs to be created but one that unites, instead of divides.” We, the citizens of the United State of America unite with Mexico when Mexico asks us to take over and not before. And you bet a safer border needs to be created. I would like to see one that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico; a double fence laced with land mines in the middle.

The Mexican president has a lot of nerve criticizing Arizona’a new law when his country institutionalizes discrimination of their resident aliens. One of his biggest fears is effective U.S. border security which would close the safety valve currently available to those citizens of Mexico that their country has failed. U.S. administrations, democrat and republican, have not shown the courage to actually do something about something that virtually everyone agrees is a problem. Given that vacuum, Arizona felt compelled to do something; good for them! If nothing else, it has sure focused attention on the issue.

Usually I agree with Pres. Obama but NOT THIS TIME. This is an absolute disgrace!!! HOW is this racial profiling? We have too many ILLEGALS in this country and it’s about time we did something about it. If you are here legally, you will have no problem. What is wrong with asking for ID? And they are not stopping people off the streets. If someone is driving too fast, etc. when they are pulled over they will be asked for ID. If they are acting suspicious, the same thing. I’m tired of protecting criminals…what about US?

I feel that it is unfair for tax paying American Citizens to have to support immigrants coming into this country illegally. We already have to fight hard to make it through this recession, we shouldn’t have to take on illegals too. The ones that mad about the Arizona laws are the ones that are in this country illegally, or they know someone here illegally.

Posted by: Andy | May 19, 2010, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

If you’re not a part of the solution you’re part of the problem.
When Calderon and Mexico pick up the tab for Arizona’s increased taxes and border security and pays restitution to innocent Americans victimized by illegals’ crimes he can comment. Until then, he needs to make room so that Obama and his idiot cabinet can go live in Mexico and redistribute their drug cartel wealth.
It’s not about discrimination. It’s about Mexico’s goverment and the U.S. government enforcing legal immigration procedures and to stop giving free passes to illegal drug smuggling, alcohol swilling, felony committing, non-tax paying free loaders regardless of their race, sex, color, national origin, etc.

Posted by: MAX | May 19, 2010, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

Arizona’s laws should be federal laws – we should not be forced to pay for people that did not come into this country legally, do not pay taxes and are a burden to our schools, health care system and economy. If you do not want to be profiled – stay out!

Posted by: rgcook2003 | May 19, 2010, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

Here are the facts…there is already a law on the books saying exactly what the Arizona governor expressed and there is no need for another law. Why doesn’t she encorce the current law instead of grandstanding. Obama said we need a comprehensive law for immigration, he said the Mexicans need to go to the rear to get jobs and they need to be fines, pay taxes and LEARN ENGLISH. He also said he need help to pass this law so republicans here is your opportunity to step up and work with this administration for once. Perhaps if you had not held up 50 of Obamas nominees for 20 months, for no reason other than you could, we could get something done. Working together creates success…saying no and blocking everything creates hostility and is non productive. It is your choice if you want to do really do something positive about immigration. Your president Bush tried and even though I did not like “amnesty for all” it was his own party who defeated it so this time,…let’s get it right. Stop blaming everyone else.

Maybe it’s time Mexico had a president that worked for the growth and prosperity of Mexico – and not spending time groveling and complaining about US immigration policy. Imagine the pride of a nation when not only this president – but also the last, could think of no better “growth” strategy then to beg the US president to allow his people to work our menial labor jobs.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT GET IT
The Arizona law requires brown-skinned naturalized American citizens to carry papers with them AT ALL TIMES.
I GUARANTEE that no white-skinned Americans will EVER be asked to prove their citizenship under ‘reasonable suspicion’.
But what is worse, cops cannot tell the difference between brown-skinned naturalized Americans and brown-skinned U.S. born citizens.
Brown-skinned U.S. born citizens ==> SHOW ME YOUR PAPERS.
White-skinned U.S. born citizens ==> NO PROBLEM.
That is why this law is fundamentally un-American.

Not sure who is more insulting to the legal immigrants / residents of the United States, Obama or Calderon.
It’s simple; if you entered illegally, you don’t belong here and should have absolutely no rights afforded to legal immigrants.
While Obama touts the proud tradition as a nation of immigrants, he should be stressing the ‘legal immigrants’.

Calderon knows that if the U.S actually starts protecting it’s border and enforcing existing immigration laws, as is it’s right, and the flow of illegal immigrants slows, he and his wealthy oligarchy will actually have to reform Mexico and actually support the people he fobs off on the U.S or face insurrection. Illegal immigration keeps all of Latin America’s ruling classes wealthy and powerful by exporting those who would demand a change to the system if they had to stay. Calderon is asking Obama to support crony elitism for Latin America’s wealthy.

I legally came to this country from Hong Kong. Before I came, I had to be examined by a doctor there (designated by the US govt)to make sure I do not carry diseases into this country. I had to agree to the terms of the selective service. My family had to prove we had a large sum of money in the bank. We had to agree not to rely on the government. We had to show proof that in the case we could not find employment, a relative or friend in the US or our savings + investment can support us. Well what is the point of all the hoops that I had to go thru if I could just cross the border and stay. Not fair to me and those that came legally.

Judging from the comments posted, Mr. Calderon is right on the mark. Also many of the posts reflect a total ignorance of the dysfunctional immigration system in this nation which the Republican party for decades have blocked revision to. Of course illegal immigration is wrong, but don’t wrap yourselves in the American flag as you castigate Hispanics – my best friend’s family was slaughered by the CIA supported dictatorship in Guatemala and planted under trees in the “reforestation” program. He fled through Mexico and crossed illegally into California – after 10 years of literally hiding and being abused, threatened, economically destitute and emotionally drained he turned to some of us who aren’t ashamed to admit that this is a great country – as long as we keep the mirror in focus. Fellow Americans, things need fixing, but a lot of you need to clean up your own acts and words.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon knows that Mexico’s own immigration laws are vastly more draconian that the US’s. Further, he knows that everyday Mexico intercepts vast numbers of illegal aliens crossing its own southern border, and Mexico deals extremely harshly with them. For Calderon to make any negative comments about Arizona’s law, which merely gives local police the power to enforce existing Federal Law, it the height of hypocrisy.

RE:I GUARANTEE that no white-skinned Americans will EVER be asked to prove their citizenship under ‘reasonable suspicion’.
I’m pretty sure that if the white-skinned American did not speak English or had an accent, that would be reasonble suspicion to clarify their legal immigration status. I have a friend who was born in Ireland and is required to carry her papers showing she is in the country legally as is every other legal immigrant.
The Mexican president may want to look at his own immigration policies before he criticizes the US as they are a lot more stringent.

Posted by: Karl | May 19, 2010, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

There is so many things wrong with this. “forcing OUR PEOPLE” if they’re his people why are they in this country? LEGAL immigrants come into this country because they want to become Americans-OUR people. Why doesn’t Calderon open his borders to central and south americans then, they feel discriminated against too. Calderon is a low life and nobody cares what he thinks. Obama as usual is a tool when it comes to this topic. The only people who are getting no respect are the American people. Tax free illegals are good for business owners, politicians and for the illegals themselves. Bad for taxpayers and communities. Why should they get stuck paying for this slave labor force?

Kathy: What is wrong with that…Rand Paul threw a bash for his win last night. This is protocall and every president does it. He is a guest. What you really need to focus on is what President Obama said:we must get a comprehensive plan, the illegals must become citizens, pay a fine and pay taxes, they must go to the back of the line for jobs, and they must learn to SPEAK ENGLISH. I think he stood up to Calderone. Of course, there are politics for both countries and for certains things the economy of Arizona and other states are interchanged with Mexico. I think this president has the right approach. He did not bash the Americans. He did say that he will need the support of the republicans to get this plan done. Let’s see how cooperative they will be. Just like the banks, clean air, sanctions on oil drilling, etc. they are still the party of no. Maybe they should approve some of the 50 names of nominees Obama has recommended. they are just holding them us because they can. How productive is that. Let us look at the true picture…the republicans will not work with the democrats and that is sad. They would rather waste 4 yeas than to get somethings done. what does that say about their so called Americanism and working for the people?

MEXICO’S PRESIDENT MAKING A JOKE?
Who does Mexico’s President think he is kidding?
Here is the President of Mexico, standing on U.S. soil, at the White House WITH a President of the United States, telling Americans that Arizona has no RIGHT to make laws to protect its citizens FROM the very people who are literally KILLING American citizens IN Arizona?
Mexico’s president said that with a straight face. And, this President agrees with him?
Mexico’s President and his government ARE responsible FOR their side of the BORDERS between the U.S. and Mexico in which millions of HIS citizens have ILLEGALLY crossed. And the President of Mexico is blaming ARIZONA?
The U.S. military is in the wrong nations (Iraq and Afghanistan). The Mexican President just TOLD Americans that the U.S. has NO right to stop it from being INVADED by ILLEGAL aliens.
Are Mexicans the enemies of Americans? No. The Mexico GOVERNMENT is. Mexico’s President is for his arrogance to tell the U.S. that not only Arizona’s law is “discriminatory” against Mexicans, but in effect so is the 1952 FEDERAL law that requires “aliens” to carry ID cards.
If Norwegians, Canadians, New Zealanders, were sneaking across U.S. borders, the SAME laws apply.
For Mexico’s President to stand there in front of a Black President of the United States and pander to the issue of racism when there are 12 million Illegal Aliens here on U.S. soil, is itself RACIST.
Calderon should be escorted OUT of the U.S. until he and HIS government secure HIS borders so that Americans do not HAVE to pass legislation to stop ILLEGAL ALIENS from invading the U.S.
Racism? No.
It’s called the Rule of Law and protection of U.S. citizens FROM invaders of this nation that this president has refused to address to protect Americans….AGAIN.
And, government officials wonder why U.S. Citizens hate the U.S. government? Calderon and Obama need to take a look at the results of Tuesday’s elections.
This president of the U.S. is going to earn a “NObama in ’12″ as the worst president since Harding.

I discussed the Arizona law with a friend who resides in the State, and she indicated the ‘Arizona law follows the US constitutional laws pertaining to border patrol, illegal alien occupation, etc.’ She indicated Arizona passed the law as the Federal Government is not doing their mandated job on border patrol. State citizens are fed up with the crime and drugs that are coming into their State across the border. It was an interesting discussion, but when I asked her about the resulting racial profiling and random arrests of police and highway patrol of Latino-looking people, I did not get a convincing argument against this possibility.

I brought my wife here from P.R. China in 2003. The process was horrific. We documented our relationship well, incluiding my ability to support her. We were praised for our thoroughness by the INS Agent that interviewed us, and we were assured that we would have no problems with her getting her green card after 90 security check.
It took over 2 years before she finally got her green card. I won’t go through all the problems we had, but suffice it to say that we spent a tremendous amount of hours waiting in lines and on the phone on hold.
At one point, we were told my wife’s file was sitting in a pile to be destroyed!
My wife is now a proud US Citizen.
I have no respect or sympathy for anyone who breaks the law and enters this country illegally.
The idea that our government would give illegals amnesty and put them ahead of the current group of LEGAL immigrants who are patiently waiting their turn and jumping through the legal hoops and barrels is outrageous.

If Obama had any regard or respect for this nation or its lawful citizens and legal immigrants he would not allow Calderon to bash, impune, or criticize this nation, its people, or its laws. For Calderon to say that ‘this law will lead to discrimination’ is to call Americans racist who willfully discriminate against people for no reason. Illegal aliens are felons. Federal law specifies that becoming an illegal alien is a felony. Aiding and abetting an illegal alien is a felony. Concealing or transporting an illegal alien is a felony. Hiring or otherwise employing an illegal alien is a felony. Why is our president choosing to support criminals who are multiple felons over the well being of the lawful citizens and legal immigrants of this nation?

What else could it be? Surely President Calderon isn’t trying to actually lecture the US on immigration when his government throws people in jail for immigration violations for up to two years…or until they can come up with the cash to buy their way out.
I’m sticking with the SNL theory…it’s the only one that makes sense.

Posted by: ScottiesRule | May 19, 2010, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm

What I read here is opinion of people who see complicated issues in black and white – no pun intended – People like the Arizona law and the GOP rhetoric because they offer a simple solution – in theory – to these problems, while being unapplicable in practice. I also read people’s opinion that addressing the US problems frankly and looking to solve them is seen as anti-american, which I guess is coming from people who would rather hide their heads in the sand and ignore the problems, leaving them to believe such fallacies as ” the US healthcare system is the best in the worrld”, “the US is the best country in the world”. Reads as a conversation with an alcoholic who is yet to admit he has a problem for fear of having to take the difficult steps to cure it. One person even takes offense at the fact Pres. Calderon spoke in Spanish?!? In what language do US presidents speak when visiting France or Germany??? BTW, when France’s foreign minister Villepin opposed his country’s veto at the UN to the Iraq war, criticizing US “intelligence” and motives, the US people’s reaction was to vilify him, turn “french fries” to “liberty” fries, instead of stopping to ask themselves: “Could he be right? Should we not wait since inspectors ON THE GROUND tell us there are no WMDs?” The US are NOT always right, do NOT always have the best solutions, and dissenting opinion is NOT treason, just another point of view worth exploring…

If Mexico did not have the U.S. as a neighbor, there would be no hope for their people at all. The reason Arizona passed this law is because the situation is so desperate down there. President Felipe Calderon go home and take all of Mexico’s illegal aliens in the United States with you!

Posted by: FedUp | May 19, 2010, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

I fully support Arizona and the law. President Calderon can go to hell. He needs to control his country first before telling us what to do with ours. Let begin by what the law means. It means that anyone who is illegally in the USA is usually up to no good. In arizona, they have brought crime with them. Arizona has the highest rate of kidnappings in the US. Over 50% of the crime is committed be illegal immigrants. Its a suprise that Arizona took this long to implament such a law.

Tell Calderon to keep his people on his side of the border and he won’t have to worry about Arizona Imigration Laws. This is yet another example of how the leaders of third world nations are bold enough to lecture us because of the weakness of the current administration.

Posted by: Dave | May 19, 2010, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

Our people? Well, whose people are they? If they’re Mexico’s people, then take them back and help your own people. If they’re our people you have no right to say anything Mr. Calderon.

Posted by: B | May 19, 2010, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

Currently illegal immigrants are costing the state of Arizona nearly 3 billion dollars a year in health benefits, educational benefits and social services (i.e. welfare) benefits. No wonder so many want to sneak across the border. If Mexico offered such a sweet deal to people who illegally enter their country I might go for it. Can’t beat those kinds of freebies!! Plus me and my other illegal pals could ban together in Mexico, begin an underground economy based on cash payment for services rendered combined with none payment of taxes on our earnings and eventually start our own legit business such as an American food restaurant. I’m going to check on how Mexico currently deals with illegal entry into their country. Surely they’re as helpful and caring and naive as American is…Not…

By the way, the Hispanic voting block is HUGE. AND, they’re going to be out in force during the next general election. Inevitably, minorities will out-populate Caucasian Americans in the western states. Then, you will have NO say. The large block of Hispanics will vote who they want into office, or at least, vote against the conservative candidate you’re voting for. America is changing! It certainly ain’t gonna be the America you grew up in during the 50s or 60s!

The more people bring attention to this the more it will ignite a powder keg waiting to blow across the country. We will protect AMERICA from this invasion! Congress and Bush and now Obama didn’t listen.
Arizona has the right! Both of my grandfathers and my wife immigrated LEGALLY to the U.S. If a person breaks the law, send them back! Let the border war begin, I’m loading magazines!

Posted by: Arizona boy | May 19, 2010, 2:33 pm 2:33 pm

First of all, I would like to say that I agree that border control is in urgent need for our country.
However, I don’t believe this law will solve the immigration problem and may in fact, incur additional problems for this state. First of all, illegal immigrants come from all countries and in all colors, not just brown, and this law seems to be aimed solely at the Mexican community. Secondly, Arizona having been a Mexican state prior to the Mexican-American War, has a large number of US citizens of Mexican ancestry that may be subjected to this racial profiling and therefore, suffer the consequences of this law.
In conclusion, I believe that we need a federal law that will close our borders to further illegal immigration and not be restricted to the Mexican community that has provided their support to our country historically.

Billy Bob: This problem did not start with Obama and our government is not “run” by democrats. Congress makes the laws, not the president and 109th congress is the ones who did nothing about this under a republican president.
Bush had plenty of time to devote to this but failed to address it. We rarely saw Bush, but I see Obama every day. He cannot clean up the mess that the previous president and congress left for him instantly. The reason congress is now predominately democrat is because the people voted out the republicans that were passing tax credits to the wealthy.

The drug cartels are putting the people of AZ at risk. US Immigration isn’t enforcing it’s current laws and therefore, the states have no choice.
To be honest, if a person is in the US legally, they have nothing to fear. Don’t most of us carry our driver’s license or other picture ID?

Posted by: Russell Allen | May 19, 2010, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

I just want to say that Mexicans have a right to be here in America just like everybody else. We don’t discriminate on Asians, Arabs, Jamaicans, Europeans, etc. and they’re not born here neither. They travel from other countries to get the same freedom we have. So who are you to say that Mexicans don’t have a right to become apart of America. The Indians didn’t want the whites here. But the whites came over anyway. So that’s means the whites are here illegally too. Before you speak think PEOPLE!!!

Posted by: BonitaMaryJane | May 19, 2010, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

It’s kind of ridiculous that latinos feel discriminated against – at least in a negative sense. I’m from Canada going through my employer sponsored Green Card process, which means you need a degree, have no criminal record and pass background checks , which I assume is the kind of immigrant that would be useful to the USA. It will take me 7-8 years or so due to backlog. My wife will then have to wait another 4-5 years to come here legally afterwards. That’s 12-13 years of essentially indentured servitude and always carries a risk ( say my employer goes bankrupt, for example). If you want to question return value, I think at that point I would have given more than my fair share.
What really pisses me off is, apparently latinos feel they should be able to come here and not have to do all those things , as though it’s somehow fair. I guess there is something missing here, but it seems like the US government and other Americans already CATER to latinos, what the hell else could you ask for?

My friend had to come through Mexico when he moved here from Central America and the Mexican officals robbed him of all of his money. He said the Mexican’s hate Central American’s and mistreat and discriminate against them all the time. Many Central American’s are beaten and killed by Mexican citizens and police officals. Maybe, the Mexican pres. ought to look at his own laws first. Last time I checked, there are millions of mexican immigrants living in this country that are treated with respect even though they show no loyalty to this country. Truth hurts.

How dare Mexico and other countries lecture us on our immigration laws. They have more harsh laws on their books than we do. The difference is they enforce those laws and we do not. That is the problem. Our federal government has decided those laws are advantageous to them politically. So they preach rule of law to our citizens all the while they pick and choose the laws they wish to enforce to divide and jail the people. This is okay to them as long as it is Americans they are offending and not foreigners.

We even allow then to come over WITHOUT insurance and drive delivery trucks. WE started this, and now they are the bad guys? No no no! This will not end well, it needs to STOP now! Adrian | May 19, 2010 2:32:43 PM: FYI, there are more immigrants in Canada, relative to population, than in the US. Central Canada has a large Ukrainian population, western Canada a huge Chinese population, and they vote according to their values as well… As far as the US in the 50′s or 60′s which seems to be what a lot of Tea Party supporters seem to be nostalgic about, ask a few african-americans and women how they enjoyed those decades! The world has changed drastically since, and no party or politician is going to bring the 50′s back. That’s a simplistic view, which, as most GOP / Tea Party talking points, is unapplicable in REAL LIFE… As long as you hold on to these “pipe dreams” you avoid facing the fact that the US is rapidly losing influence in the world, and GWB did a lot to accelerate that trend. The US, while being still the most powerful military nation, will become the third or 4th economic power within the next 25 years, like it or not. Time to think about bringing the 21st Century home to millions who live in 3rd world conditions in Appalachia and rural Southern states, put emphasis on education as the US is now behind most G-20 countries in that respect, and stop thinking you can go “back to the future”… THAT was a MOVIE!!!

A brief on the path to LEGAL immigration:
Find a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or U.S. employer to act as sponsor for your permanent resident (green card) petition.
Once the sponsorship application is approved, the USCIS will mail you an application packet.
Wait the required amount of time. This process sometimes takes a decade or more.
Obtain police reports from every place where you have lived at least one year since you turned 16 (to verify that you have no serious criminal record).
Complete a physical examination at a medical clinic approved by the USCIS.
Have your U.S. citizen or permanent resident relative fill out the USCIS Affidavit of Support on your behalf (you are exempt from this requirement if your sponsor is your employer).
Make an appointment for a visa interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over your place of residence.
Come to your visa interview. If your interview is successful, an immigration visa will be stamped onto your passport.
Enter the USA on your new immigration visa. Your green card will be sent to your U.S. address several weeks after you enter the USA.

If president Calderon was really concerned with the plight of illegal immigrants, the Mexican government would stop handing out “how to cross the border safely” booklets in Mexican border towns. These booklets offer great insight as to how to avoid border patrol (cross at night and try to blend in with the scenery, dress in desert-hued clothing, etc.).
Maybe if the Mexican government stopped cooperating with the drug cartels, people would stop fleeing from their country.

There are over 5 million white Americans living in Mexico without any discrimnation, they usually work at schools as English teachers many are student in Universities in Mexico, whites are treated way better than how we treat Hispanics here. Apparently, you have not read the law. There is nowhere in the law that states that “Brown-skinned” naturalized American citizens must carry papers. Most people (who are citizens) have drivers license, so it should be no hardship to show it – no matter what color your skin is. People who are resident aliens (here legally) are required by federal law to carry papers at all times. So they should have no issue – no matter what color their skin is.

Mexico is the 6th largest oil exporting country in the world – and the entire oil industry was nationalized in the 1930′s – for the benefit of the people.
This meeting would have been an excellent time for Obama to make it clear that Mexico needs to spend that money on making thier country a place where thier citizens can live. When we support wholesale immigration of Mexico’s poor, we support corrupt politicians who put that money in thier pockets.
Mexico needs to clean up Mexico, and they have no incentive to do it when anyone who doesn’t like the way things are is encouraged to leave for the US.

Just curious.
Posted by: Paul |
You can live in Mexico, but there are strict rules. You can not work in Mexico unless you are Mexican (in some tourist towns, Americans work for American companies in Mexico, but you can not take a job away from a Mexican). You can live there but you can’t import more than a small percent of furniture — must buy most of it in Mexico. Also, foreigners are banned from owning property in Mexico … they can buy a lease that is held in trust, but it is not like in America, where anyone (regardless of citizen status) can buy anything as long as they have the money.
So to answer your question, yes, you can live illegally in Mexico, but there are discriminatory laws set up to make it difficult. To live legally in Mexico, you really need a lot of money.

Fix your own house first, Mr. Calderon, before you criticize our laws. Mr. Calederon is right about one thing, however, and that is that the law will discriminate against many Mexicans. That is because the law discriminates between citizens ann legal residents on the one hand, and illegal immigrants on the other hand. Prepare to have many of your countrymen repatriated to Mexico, Mr. Calderon.

Mexican immigration laws are much more restrictive than US laws, and enforced more rigidly than the Arizona law requires.
Their laws are also racist since they forbid ownership of any land within 30 miles of any coast by foreigners. In this case the foreigners they are talking about are the “gringos”.
No country on earth is more welcoming to immigrants than the USA, including Arizona. We just ask that the immigration occur in accordance with our laws.
Mr. Obama will never get immigration reform passed, with or without Republican support, until he first seals the borders. Every county has the right and the OBLIGATION to control its borders. It is what makes it country instead of region.

Frankly, I have no interest in what the Mexican President thinks of a state’s decision to enforce their borders.
He should figure out ways that his citizens don’t want to leave Mexico by stimulating his own economy. Clean your own house first before you criticize your neighbors house Mr. President.

Folks, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again and again – Illegal aliens are here illegally. They are not “undocumented workers” because the never attempt to get the legal documentation. They could be compared to the shysters boosting fenced items on the street corners. They, too, are “undocumented”, but their activity is still illegal. In these cases, it’s even worse because they are stealing resources from law-abiding Americans by paying no taxes on cash-only payrolls, getting all kinds of benefits from Social Services, their kids are sucking up room in classes that cause us to build more and bigger schools, etc.
I really can’t believe that our President is taking sides with a foreign government against one of our States, whose laws, by extension, he has sworn to uphold!! Impeach Obama NOW!!!

Of course that would not be OK, but fortunately, that’s not what the Arizona law does.
The Arizona law first stipulates that the stop has to be a legal stop. If someone happens to fit the description of a bank robbery suspect, officers still have to follow the law. Between cameras on cop car dashboards and the ACLU breathing down their necks, most cops bend over backwards to avoid any sort of profiling.

The real problem is that a lot of people in Mexico and in the USA think the California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas actually belongs to Mexico and it was stolen from them. What they don’t realize, however, if they were still part of Mexico, Oregon, Colorado, Oklahoma and Arkansas would be faced with the same problem today of illegal immigration today!

Posted by: Quo Warranto? | May 19, 2010, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

As an illegal immigrant (alien) you’d much rather be caught in AZ than in Mexico. Can you imagine AZ writing an illegal immigration law that mirrored Mexico’s law? It would NEVER happen here. Let AZ take care of business. There’s nothing in the AZ law that isn’t already in the federal version not being enforced (in AZ).

Mr. President, here’s the correction to your statement “forcing illegals to stay home”. Doesn’t that make you feel better? Calderone, have you read the law?

Posted by: lfrichar | May 19, 2010, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

Robert Jones How could someone be stopped for not being white. Please 1) read the law as modified to say questioned in the investigation of an infraction, such as driving intoxicated, speeding, violence etc. Secondly, the federal government has had stops about 30 to 60 miles from the Mexican boarder to ask all drivers if they are citizens or are transporting non-citizens. That has been going on for at least 40 years, and it is every driver.

Posted by: John | May 19, 2010, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

Note to the President of Mexico. Keep your illegal entrants home. The corrupt government of Mexico does nothing to keep Mexicans on their side of the border. They do nothing to ease the strife of the poor in their own country. They do nothing to protect them from themselves when they assume the risk of crossing the desert just to be captured and returned to Mexico. It’s time we started rounding up and imprisoning people who are here illegally, breaking our laws, sucking up our resources and contributing nothing to this country. Go home. We won’t miss you.

Please remind us, Felipe, what is the penalty for a foreigner entering your country and stepping on your soil illegally? Perhaps you haven’t read your immigration laws either. Mexico requires its “foreigners” to: have the “necessary funds for sustenance for themselves and their dependents. Foreigners may be barred if their presence upsets the equilibrium of the national demographics.” How about this one, Felipe? “Foreigners who enter without papers or under false pretenses may be fined or imprisoned.” And here’s something you might like to know: “Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants.” That’s just thumbnail sketch of what your country does in addressing the breach of your border by illegal immigrants. I invite my fellow Americans to add to the list. DO NOT come to this great country and insult Americans. It’s bad enough we have a “president” who berates and belittles his citizens on a daily basis. You and your host, along with members of his cabinet should sit yourselves down in a circle and read your own countries’ legislation regarding illegal immigrants. So go home and do your job so that we won’t be flooded with your citizens because you can’t offer them anything but the kindness and generosity of the American people. We as citizens still have the right to tell you what you can do with your disparaging statements about our country and Arizona in particular, and it involves someplace where the sol don’t shine. And enjoy that state dinner brought to you by the American people.

does Calderon realize that if the US REALLY protected their borders it might benefit Mexico also? This guy complains about the US drug demand and he falsely alledges that legal US guns are sent to Mexico? Well if the border were secure it could help prevent both. Not to mention it would help Mexico with their own illegal problems since Central/South Americans wouldn’t come to the corrupt Narco-state of Mexico except to get to the US. Lastly, maybe some talented, hard-working, or rich people might stay in Mexico, and help improve the 3rd world narco-state, if US was more hard on illegals.

I’ll bet money that President Calderon has not even read the law. He’s got company. It appears that no one in President Obama’s administration has, either. I have. Police cannot pull someone over for looking Hispanic (or Swedish, for that matter.) It merely gives law enforcement the power to check a person’s identification if they are stopped for an infraction. This is the same power that federal law enforcement currently has. Stop the lies. Stop being hysterical. You should be more concerned that the Obama administration wants to be able to listen to any citizen’s cell phone calls, at any time, without a warrant.

Fox and Calderon have been the only Presidents to have an uncorrupt Government and trying to clean up their country. Calderon’s forces has destroyres 3 billion dollars worth of Cocaine, and Marijuana. They have captures 6 of the top 20 most looked for drug lords who are also considered America’s most wanted. They are currently in a sort of civil war most noticable in Cidad Juarez and El paso border, where the Mexican Army is fighting the Cartel and Barrio Azteca Gang Members. The root of the matter stems from the fact that the majority of the immigrants coming out of Central America are part of the uneducated underclass, and as a result, they bring their cultural ignorance that conflict with Americans, such as loitering (hanging out on street corners), violence, gang banging, graffiti, crime, drugs and an incredibly arrogant disposition of not wanting to even learn the official language, occupy employment that can go to an American, and in the end, divert US dollars out of the country.
America is already dealing with these issues with Americans, why are they going to add to it by accepting these people to come and add to the problem.
But notice how the democrats and the “anti immigrant” groups stay very far away from addressing these issues.
These issues are legitimate concerns, and until these issues are dealt with, this focus on immigrants isn’t going away.

If Obama is so concerned with the Arizona law, he needs to understand it is modeled on US law, and in fact, is merely an enforcement mechanism for laws the US refuses to enforce. So, if he doesn’t like the Arizona law, change the US law.
But, our slimy little President does not want to be responsible for that. He just wants to talk about it.

Gee what a great opportunity for Obama or Caldrone to show how much more liberal the immigration policies are in Mexico:
________________________________________
Mexican immigration law holds it is a felony to be an illegal alien in Mexico. In fact, Mexico annually deports more illegal aliens than the United States does.
Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are in the country legally; have the means to sustain themselves economically; are not destined to be burdens on society; of economic and social benefit to society; of good character, with no criminal record; and are contributors to the general well-being of the nation.

The Arizona law is not creating discrimination, it is helping to protect the USA from drug lords and illegal aliens who have absolutely no interest in our country other than to come over here and get free medical care, welfare, take jobs away from legal citizens and send the money back to Mexico. Other countries are actively preventing illegal aliens from infiltrating their borders by the hundreds and thousands, so why shouldn’t the USA do the same thing? We don’t need the overcrowding, diseases and more crime. If illegal Mexicans can’t take the heat they should get out of the kitchen.

Lets remember that we are the ones buying the drugs, so people should focus more on the demand for the drugs then stoping the donkeys bringing them to us. They will keep coming as long as there is a market. Same with the jobs. It is our fault. If there are no jobs they will not come here. This is not anti-patriotic it is quit the opposite. What makes us great is not a racial profiling law. What makes us great is our acceptance. Instead of blaming immagrants, blame the people buying the drugs and the employers that are breaking the law by hiring these workers. They Employers are breaking the law by hiring the illegal immagrant and then for paying them less then the minimum wage. Focus on the cause not the effect.

This immigration problems is what I see as a typical American problem. No one takes responsibility anymore. There is a lack of Honor, but way too much pride. If you critisize this country then your not a good American. That is bull. We buy the drugs, we hire the workers, we buy the goods they produce, we rent them houses to live in, we sell the cars they drive. This country spent a lot more money on Viagra last year then anyone gave to help with this immagration problem. It’s all about “ME” these days not “US” as a country. The rich only pretend to care about this country, when they really don’t care who does the work, just so long as it is done for less then minimum wage or supstantially lower then what they would have to pay an American Citizen. Look ane BP, Halliburton and Horizon. None of them take responsibilty and they really don’t care about people just profit. Ask the families on the 11 gone from the rig and scores more that happened in Texas City years ago. Families devestated but all three of these companies still making big profits and cutting corners. Wake up America time to be honorable.

treblig, If we go with that logic (that the law will lead to racial profiling by police officers) then here it is in a nut shell; A law enforcement officer at anytime anywhere could violate any law if they wanted. They could steal, murder, rape, cheat on their taxes, etc… So according to that logic, because a law enforcement officer could violate the law, we should have no law, or law enforcement because they could violate the law. Quote: If officers are empowered to decide when it’s appropriate to arrest or even to kill someone, they should be trusted not to profile based on race, said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, a supporter whose jurisdiction includes busy human and drug smuggling routes into Phoenix.”

I have a sinple solution for Calderon and Obama. Annex Mexico. If they Mex Gov. already views its citizens as Americans and thinks that letting them come here to work is easier than providing jobs and economy dow there, then let Mexico become part of America under OUR gov. and labor laws. I’m sure plenty of corp. would be willing to go down ther and exploit their natural resorces.

How nice of President Obama to be so deferential to President Calderon of Mexico, a country in which over 10% of its entire population has fled to the United States, most of them illegally.
How nice of President Obama to listen to, and apparently accept, a lecture on borders from President Calderon of Mexico, a country which immediately jails and then deports people who cross its borders illegally.
I have a great idea. Maybe, just maybe, President Obama should find a reasonably diplomatic way of telling President Calderon to take his lectures and shove them straight where the sun don’t shine.
Mexico is pathetic. It has the financial strength to take care of its people, but does not. How else do you account for the 12 – 15 MILLION of them who have fled over the border into the United States? Do you think they do that because Mexico offers them opportunity? Respect?
But instead of telling Mr. Calderon to take care of his own people before giving us lessons in immigration, Mr. Obama is busy accepting the crap sandwich Calderon is serving, and apparently agreeing with him.
When does President Obama ever act like he thinks we are the good guys? When does he ever not see us as the bad guys? With a President like this, who needs enemies of the state?
Dear 2012 election: Please try to get here faster.

In Ayn Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged, there is an incident where Francisco D’Anconia opens a mine in Mexico, promotes it as a great find, and the Mexican government nationalizes it. But the mine was actually worthless, and the Mexican government complained that they had been hoodwinked.
When I read this in the 1970s, I thought it was too far-fetched to be true. Given what Calderon said today, it sounds very true to life.

When U come up with that “COMPREHENSIVE solution to the problem, making sure that immigrants can be integrated in society through education and legal employment,” then feel free to go down to Central America and see if anyone of those corrupt politicians (from the Elite classes) will implement that type of investment on their own people.
Don’t hold your breath, kiddo.
PS: As long as Central American immigrants come here, making things worst with their “cultural ignorance” with no attempts to refine themselves or even address the issues that Americans take exception to, “don’t expect miracles” from the State of Arizona.

Central American underclass??? WOW!!! Where were your parents or grand-parents born??? Were they part of some OVERCLASS ??? Did they come to the US with PhDs or MBAs? Most immigrants, legal or not, historically have come from poorer countries, with little or no education, trying to make a better life for them and their children. Many were “imported” exactly for that reason: Poor, uneducated people will take any job that citizens will not. Canada imported chinese labor in the 1800′s to build the railroads, as they would do the dangerous jobs for a pitance, while the “british” wouldn’t. When you do this, you have to take the BAD with the GOOD.

Posted by: treblig56 | May 19, 2010, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

And, in FACT, treblig, this law DOES allow some small authority for local LE to act in conjunction with the Border Patrol/ICE. This is due to the amendment to federal law after 9/11 that entitles local law enforcement agencies further “authority” (using the term loosely) when coming into contact with someone who is illegal. You do realize, right, that right now even when local LE is CERTAIN they’ve encountered illegals (a van packed full of young men who speak no English) that they had NO power to question or detain them? They have to call Border Patrol and “hope” they get to the scene soon enough. That one sheriff you reference? If you knew his local reputation you might not use his words as “justification” for your opinion. So far the only two local suits filed against this law have *nothing* to do with legality or unconstitutionality – the agencies suing are concerned about this being an unfunded mandate by the state. They’re not concerned about profiling/discrimination (because they understand the law) They are worried about how to PAY for enforcing this law and that’s all.

Posted by: puppyfeet217 | May 19, 2010, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

Obama wants ILLEGALS to pay a fine and taxes to pave the way to legal citizenship. HA, HA, HA – and exactly HOW will this be accomplished? Under Washingtons plan, you can’t ask anyone to prove they are in this country LEGALLY, or your profiling. Now Washington is playing the “CHILDREN CARD” As reported – “MY MOMMIE IS AFRAID”. Surely, this is a statement pumped into the childs head. The ILLEGALS will stop at nothing to continue breaking our laws, and change our country to suit their needs. Just remember WASHINGTON, the LEGAL AMERICAN voted you in office, and the LEGAL AMERICAN CAN VOTE YOU OUT!!! It’s time to PROTECT AMERICA, NOT MEXICO. It’s time to stop the INVASION!

puppyfeet217 | May 19, 2010 4:22:12 PM: What a stupid response! Some AZ sheriffs already denounced the law – Sheriff Antonio Estrada of Santa Cruz County is one, Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris is another – as it implicitly asks them to profile, as opposed to asking them to kill, rape or steal as you so stupidly suggest… The law also provides for citizens to SUE law enforcement departments if they FEEL they do not enforce it harshly enough. Which law gives citizens the right to sue police for not stealing, murdering, or raping enough…

Posted by: treblig56 | May 19, 2010, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

treblig, you’re focusing on those illegals who are employed. There is a BIG part of SB1070 that is focused on the criminal element who are not gainfully employed but participate in the escalating levels of drug crime and trafficking in stolen golds and human smuggling. Those are people who happily run back and forth across the border and have NO intention of becoming American citizens. Many have “settled” in Tucson and Phoenix as their base of operations while taking advantage of social services, education and health care funded by legal tax-paying citizens. Would YOU be happy living in a state that can barely provide services and jobs for legal citizens when they need help, knowing your tax dollars are helping support the criminals?

p.s. you’re not talking with someone who’s got some kind of political agenda and I don’t use soundbites to make my case. I am right here, where the rubber meets the road. I love the cultural diversity in this state – both of my children are bilingual who went to a high school that is 93% Hispanic. There are no problems incorporating every race, creed and color into every community. This issue is about LEGAL status and nothing else.

Well, treblig, and here i was thinking that we were having a conversation. Let me tell you what stupid is: stupid is assuming that because a law “could” lead to profiling that it WILL lead to profiling when it is stated very clearly in the bill itself that profiling is AGAINST the law, just as it is in federal immigration law. When you educate yourself about SB1070 and HB2162 then you can come back and tell me about the built-in safeguards that EVERY LE officer on the street understands. Meanwhile quote the words of two/three people who don’t get it.

I mentioned one sheriff and Phoenix chief of Police, but there are suits filed by police officers and others as well. As for the reason for their opposition, let me cite them from recent interviews: —– “When you get a law that leads a state down this path, where the enforcement is targeted to a particular segment of the population, it’s very difficult not to profile,” says Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris. —– Sheriff Antonio Estrada of Santa Cruz County, right along the border with Mexico, calls the law “absurd” and “downright racist.” He tells it like it is: “The way it’s tailored is very clear. You’re looking for brown-skinned individuals. That’s what you’re looking for. That’s what the whole purpose of the law is and that’s what they’ve always said.” Soooo… Sounds like anti-profiling comments to me, not unfunded mandate talk as you suggest…

the comments by the Santa Cruz sheriff and the Phoenix police chief are simply wrong (or misguided, based on misinformation). Simply reading the bill alleviates the fears of racial profiling and targeting “brown-skinned people.” Despite all the emotion surrounding this law, it is a very simple (and short) bill – it is intended so that politically-motivated elected officials (like a mayor, for instance) can not prevent law enforcement from asking about a person’s legal status IF during a lawful stop, there is reason to suspect the person is in the country illegally.
Right now, in certain sanctuary cities like Phoenix, police are NOT ALLOWED to ask about a person’s legal status even if there is ample evidence that they are legal. This law makes it uniform across the state. If there is reason to suspect during a routine stop that a person is in the country illegally (race, accent or nation of origin are specifically mentioned in the law and CAN NOT be used to determine reasonable suspicion) police can simply ask a few questions, check a name against a database, and if it’s determined the person is in the country illegally, federal officials can be called. No more political posturing.

Posted by: Copy Cat | May 19, 2010, 5:52 pm 5:52 pm

No, in fact, treblig, I’m dyed-in-the-wool liberal and Arpaio isn’t my “cup of tea” but nice of you to make assumptions just because I support a law that I UNDERSTAND. There is ONE Phx officer who is suing the state. As long as you are “taking as gospel” the words of a few individuals who made comments before reading the bill, then you too will stay misinformed and your assumptions will, of course, be skewed. I have never in my life seen such blatant misrepresentation by the media on any subject ever. As long as people are basing their opinions on what the media has reported rather than doing their own research, this kind of characterization of the law will continue. Once again, SB1070 mirrors federal law. It does not supersede and it does not controvert federal immigration law. If you imagine there is a possibility of profiling then you need to speak to the feds and ask them to re-write the federal law.

Posted by: puppyfeet217 | May 19, 2010, 5:56 pm 5:56 pm

I am just tired of this Stupid Governer fanning the flames of hatred. If she and that stupid racist sherrif where doing their jobs there would not be a demand for illegal workers in AZ. Same old story from the rednecks, take no responsibility just blame people with darker skin.
Posted by: tejasoutlaw |
What has she said that fans “the flames of hatred?” Just curious? What has the sheriff said that is racist?
As for people working illegally in this country, just a reminder, it is a violation of FEDERAL law to work in this country if a person is not a citizen, legal resident or does not have proper VISA authorization …. that’s been the law of the land for decades. Race has nothing to do with it.
Arizona has the toughest worker sanctions laws in the country, aimed at cracking down on employers who refuse to pay American workers a federally-mandated legal wage. Unions, lately, look the other way and rather than protect American jobs, they encourage illegal immigrants to undercut the American workforce. Businesses are able to hire illegal immigrants because there is an elaborate identity theft network in place that provides illegal immigrants with stolen social security numbers. The employers accept these stolen numbers, don’t ask questions and stay above the fray if there’s a raid.
Unfortunately, the problem of illegal immigration/illegal workforce can’t be solved by sitting at your computer calling people names (like racist). It takes deeper thinking and tougher action.
Because employers will always find the loopholes when it comes to illegal immigrants (who, by the way are ruthlessly exploited – can’t see how anyone can support illegal immigration knowing the abuse these folks are put through) the only way to stop illegal immigration is by enforcing our nation’s immigration rules. If the federal government won’t do it, at least one state is willing to.
It’s sickening how these immigrants are exploited and abused so that Americans can have cheap lettuce. It hurts the American workforce and it hurts the immigrants.
Time for it to stop and race has nothing to do with it.

I, as well, I’m a social liberal, fiscal conservative from SoCal; however, I absolutely support States rights with Federal law to protect it’s law abiding citizens from those who choose to, and sometimes for example gang activity/drug dealing with violence, break the law and then they will beat a hasty retreat back across to Mexico…I just don’t think those complainers back East REALLY understand what is happening here on the border…If it takes ID checks for ALL Americans….Time for a NATIONAL ID, so that the law breakers may be sent back to whatever country they hail from so be it…TIME FOR THE SUPREME COURT TO DECIDE…

to ken:
from obama’s remarks:
“What we also have to recognize — and I talked about this with President Calderón — is every nation also has the right to secure its borders and make orderly decisions about who comes in and who comes out… The United States has to be able to make determinations about who comes in and who comes out in an orderly fashion.”
&
Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change, which has been critical of the Obama administration told Jonathan Weisman of the Wall Street Journal:
The little girl was right. The truth is that more mothers and fathers were deported in Obama’s first year as president than were deported in the last year under Bush. Mr. Obama, who so eloquently spoke of the pain and anguish caused by tearing families apart as a candidate, as president has only ramped up that pain and anguish.

my point is just, things are a lot grayer/nuanced than your perception has it to be. Obama’s views may not be 100% your point of view, but to say that he has not factored in the laws part is simply not true.

Calderon says “our people”. Exactly. Not US citizens, not even people here legally on (time restricted) visas, which must be carried on your person at all times as required by US Federal Law.
If we didn’t have millions of people violating our Southern border, the Az law would not have been passed and no one would ever even wonder if any person was here illegally.
If the Chinese can build a wall over 5500 miles long, surely we can build one less than 2000 miles long.
And if you are someone that believes in open borders, then I assume you want to avoid hypocrisy and you don’t have a fence around your property and you have no doors on your home. And have no problem with people coming and going on your property and in your home as they please.

Why is it, nobody reminds the President of Mexico, that it is a Felony to be in Mexico without your papers or Visa. It carries up to 2 years in jail for first offence.
Arizona is only a misdermeanor, not a felony like in Mexico.
If Calderon claims his peopole are being targeted by race,If they are his people, why are they here without proper documents, and what does Mexico do when people from other Countries are there without Documents in order? My family waited to come here 4 years, if someone cuts in line at the market in front of you, do you consider yourself racist, to tell them you were there first in line?

Then keep them in your own country and they won’t have to worry about profiling.

“Having traveled into Mexico last year to various cities on the Baja Peninsula, a distance of more than 1,000 miles round-trip, we were stopped more than 20 times at various checkpoints. At most of those stops, we were told to exit the vehicle and we were subjected to rigorous inspections.
“Where does Mexican President Felipe Calderón get off with his hypocritical outrage at our Senate Bill 1070?”

Obama will let Calderon bad mouth the US and congress claps?Over 15 million of illegals in the US.Illegals vote with false Identification helped political power groups.Millions of illegals votes from illegals and from parents of illegals.illegals have about five kids per family.Millions and millions of voters.Which way do you think they will vote,To help Americans or to help illegals and their mother country. My fellow Americans we are in deep deep trouble of losing our great country,Why because we want to be good and fair to people. We even will even take from our childrens education so illegals can go to school and over crowd our schools and medical hospitals,

Is this why Obama is training the 80,000. special troops for this summer because he thinks there is going to be civil unrest. No where else in the world would anyone be able to just run across the border and receive welfare, medical, an education and housing. Check out the other countries immigration laws if our president and Mexico’s president think we are wrong. Why is Obama turning his back on the American people?

I was watching the video of the Mexican guy lecturing the lawmakers at the congress… For one moment, I thought the Mexican president was taking over the White House. Why don’t we just kick Obama out of the White House, and let Mr. Mexican be the US president as well? That will surely solve the border issue. Then, we will be all proud of being a Mexican? How pathetic!

I cannot believe more people are not outraged by our congress standing up a cheering for this man who insulted not only one of our states, but our country! I am just shocked that men and women that we vote in to uphold our laws actually cheered for him. I am making sure I go to the polls this year.

Obama is pro illegal alien and anti-US Taxpayer.

Outraged by this headline!
American’s have always been profiled and discriminated against by Mexican police in his country. He needs to shut up and fix the corruption and discrimination in his screwed up country before he has an opinion about our laws.

I wonder just who this mexican president thinks he is. He is not an American and has not business meddling or trying to meddle in the internal affairs of our country.
President Obama got something right, at least, when he said Mexican-Americans have been here for centuries. The key portion of the phrase is Americans; not law breaking border jumpers.
Asian, Mexican, African, Italian, German, Israeli, Arab, others, all are welcome so longs as they have been invited to this country through the legal visa process.
Those who begin their stay in this country by committing a crime (entering the country illegally is a crime) are quite simply not welcome. It should be noted that not only Mexican citizens cross the border with Mexico and if Mexico doesn’t want to enforce their borders by preventing the invasion of our nation by their citizens and by the others who cross, and if our federal government won;t enforce our border and immigration laws, then the States have the right and the power to enforce them.
See the second amendment to our constitution. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Not the use of the words “security of a free State.”
If there is a need for a guest worker program, let congress introduce one – but the lack of one is not an excuse for people to illegally enter our country – not Mexico’s country – our country.

everyone against the AZ law. Go to US Mexico border and walk across it
See what happens.
Our country is being burnt to the ground from within.
This is change we can be terrified of

Why doesn’t the Mexican President DO SOMETHING to help enforce the border’s safety AND WORK ON making HIS country a better place for Mexican citizens, and then we won’t have this problem with illegals.
This is pure insanity! He needs to mind his own business, we all know that if we crossed the border and made ourselves at home in Mexico, we would end up in a Mexican jail and left for dead.
America needs to stop being so quick to aide some of these other countries and pay attention to the needs of our OWN country! This is as ridiculous as the war in Iraq killing our American soldiers and leaving their families without a son, daughter, husband, and wife. Enough is enough!
The American people need to stand up to our government. The rich are getting richer, and some of us “grunts” who pay our taxes and work our bums off to provide for our families and futures are basically seen as the “worker ants” in this country are getting poorer. Wake up people!

Isn’t it an act of war to send millions of your country’s citizens to invade a neighboring country?? Shouldn’t he be held as a prisoner of war instead of let loose to roam our country? Shouldn’t we just invade little Mexico and annex the entire thing??

Mexican immigration law is highly discriminatory. Their law provides for restriction of groups that would change the demographics of their country. Their police routinely ask for “papers” when they suspect some one is an illegal alien.
