Napolitano on NY Bomb – no evidence “anything other than a one-off”

Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told me that right now there is no evidence that car bomb found in New York’s Times Square last night is “anything other than a one-off.”  During my “This Week” interview with Napolitano, she said state and local law enforcement officials are being alerted “to be on their toes.”    Napolitano said the explosive device “doesn’t look like it is a very sophisticated one, quite frankly.”  Forensic work including fingerprinting and analysis of the explosive device is ongoing.

Priority #1 is learning who is behind it, fingers crossed, hoping it turns out to be a nutcase republican. If it turns out to be a nutcase democrat we’ll never hear of it. Like the one that flew into the Texas federal building a few months ago, right ABC?

Posted by: smartlillena | May 2, 2010, 9:17 am 9:17 am

I heard plenty about the nutcase in Texas. Perhaps you only hear what you want to hear?
Personally, I think it’s pretty sad anyone would hope a bomber belongs to one particular party or the other. I would think most people would be more concerned with catching whomever it is and making sure there aren’t more planned than, wow I hope it can be used against the party I don’t like.

I do too. Send your concerns to borak obama!

Somewhat obvious that it looks like a one off. The standard MO for a larger, non-one-off, operation is to set them all off simultaneously for maximum effect. This was probably a single nutter, just as likely out to kill an ex-wife or some delusion of lizard people as to have any vaguely rational ‘point’. Welcome to NY – or the US for that matter. We have 300 million+ people. Some of them are murderous ********.

Are you serious? The Texas Federal Bldg story was all over the news, including plenty of coverage at ABC. You’d have to have been hiding under a rock to have missed it.

Oh I read plenty. I just didn’t see that the idiot was a crackpot democrat. He was. Had he been a repub you guys couldn’t have shut up about it!

Curious, what is Al Sharpon speaking about and who/what does he represent?

Posted by: Jane Doe | May 2, 2010, 10:07 am 10:07 am

What is going on at this show? Sharpton and Bill Mahr on the left? Why not invite Limbaugh and Hannity to counter-balance that? It is ludicrous to bring race pimps and comedians on what is supposed to be a serious discussion of issues. Neither had anything of value to say.

Posted by: sjm97 | May 2, 2010, 10:45 am 10:45 am

Why is Bill Mahr, a comedian, on this political show? It’s a joke seeing George Will and Mill Mahr sitting at the same table debating politics. Mahr showed his comic roots when he declared that Brazil was off of oil!
This program should get serious about the people they invite to debate serious issues.

Posted by: Murali Bashyam | May 2, 2010, 10:54 am 10:54 am

Bill Mahr is simply an intellectual lightweight. Why is he even on the show. And, by the way, why the obvious political imbalance on the panel? Does George Will now count as two conservatives? I realize that ABC is now one of the most liberal outlets for news, but could you at least give the illusion of balance. This is why I so seldom refer to ABC news for anything factual.

Posted by: Ellen K | May 2, 2010, 11:18 am 11:18 am

Since when is Bill Mahr qualified to report or comment on NEWS in anyhting other than a comedic format. Is ABC trying to rival the Comedy Channel. Or as a prior commentor noted are you gong to bring Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck on too. Why not make it a free for all.
Guest should be qualified, not jesters, purely there for entertainment.
That is the problem with news today everybody has an OPINION, they do not report the facts. What ever happenned to the ethics of Morrow and Cronkite??

Finally, I think This Week is back Jack Tapper Is great and the selection of the round table is interesting and fun to watch. serious issues nevertheless. keep Jake , the fact check, and interesting round table guest coming. Boot George Will, old out dated , and syndical.

What a crock of BS. Katrina, Maher and and Sharpton??? Keep up the good
work Tapper- putting really HONEST people on the show. Talk about spitting hate.
GO ARIZONA!!!!

I nominate This Week for the best discussion and dialogue on the immigration issue on 5/2/10. You had a great mix of panelists. Kudos to each of them and sharp returns to each other, including humor/wit, as they debated the issue. It’s serious stuff. The winners in the debate, despite good points from the “conservatives, go to Al, Bill and Katrina. They touched on the higher, pragmatic and realistic aspects of the immigration issue. Good exchange.

This was the last sunday morning show I would watch because I felt it had civil debate and discussion. Today was a circus! I don’t care which point of view you take. This display of rancor was far from this program’s finest hour. Oh and for the record– there are 1280 wells off of southeast coast of Brazil and 971 off gulf of mexico. A disgusted long time viewer. ABD NEWS did Tapper no favors today!

POLITICAL PUNCH is correct !!! I can not believe ABC
has sunk so low in their permitting such a line up of Guests, they must pay George very well to keep him on board.
What a bunch of hate they put out.
Who in this World chose these Guests????
I think they should change the Panels name to
SQUARE TABLE instead of ROUND TABLE. Never in
my life have I seen a more lop sided show than unless it was the Democrat National Convention
Hasta La Vista ABC !!!!!
One More Week and I say “Good Bye”

George might as well as had a bulls eye on the way wackos on today’s show targeted him. What’s this about—hate George Day! Never had Sharpton and looney lady on again!

Posted by: mom3 | May 2, 2010, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

So, we have the three flame-throwers, Katrina, Sharpton and Mahr. If all else fails, just throw in the race card as Mahr resorted to after being called out by George Will! What a joke having Mahr–is ABC jealous of John Stewart? This is serious journalism here, folks. More like theatre of the absurd.

Posted by: Elaine | May 2, 2010, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

Al Sharpton, Bill Mahr?? Really. That’s the best you could do? What those two have to say is totally irrelevant. I watched about half of the program then turned it off. I set my recorder for this? Pretty sad. Hoping for a better showing next week.

sjm97, point and fact about this show!

I don’t think I can watch your show anymore. Who is this Katrina, who answers everybody’s questions for them, interupts everybody all the time. And Al Sharpton is a joke. How many times has he been arrested? Poor George Wills. I almost wish he was a loud mouth like Katrina and Al, so he could get a word in. At least he brings facts to the table. Good by This Week. Sorry George, I can’t take it anymore

Posted by: N Richards | May 2, 2010, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

George Will should leave This Week if the show continues to book simpleton, ideological partisans like Mahr and Sharpton. I know I won’t watch.

Posted by: Dan | May 2, 2010, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

Thanks alot Jake – for giving me the dubious opportunity to watch Sharpton and Katrina overtalk everyone. And why in the world Mahr? Jake you lost control of your show and you never will have control with the likes of these panelists. It was difficult to understand what each panelist was saying due to the pandimonium.

Posted by: jim fulton | May 2, 2010, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

You have lost all credibility as a serious “news” discussion when you put Bill Mahr on the show. I resent his flat statement that Conservative are fine with racist actions and that “all racists are Conservatives”. That kind of generalization shows the kind of pea brain he his. By putting him on your show, you apparently condone such “racist” views as reasonable. Racism cuts both ways.

Posted by: Steve Towne | May 2, 2010, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm

So I turn on THIS WEEK as I always do on Sunday morning. I have found it much more intellectual than the other guys on MEET THE PRESS. Scrap “intellectual”! Sharpton and Maher on the same show? The Reverand Al is no more than a race baiting charlatan who has made a fortune fanning the flames of class division. As for Maher, his comment, “Not all Republicans are racists but all racists are Republicans” speaks for itself. You can do better…please do

Posted by: Frank | May 2, 2010, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

Brazil is the second leading oil producer in South America, producing 5 times more oil than biofuel. Bill Mahr continues to prove that he is not only unfunny, but largely ignorant. Hang in there George, you are the voice of reason.

Jake…I think you could find a more intellectual panel if you just searched the streets. Katrina,Bill and Al have agendas. They don’t even know what they are talking about. Bill Maher’s comments about racists and Republicans and you ALLOWING it, is the reason the country is having such social problems. The person who made the best comments based on “reality” was Matthew Dowd. He gets it. What he said about immigration is exactly what is happening all over the country. As for disasters…they will always happen but it would be nice if they weren’t turned into political “advantage.” I hope you do better next week.

Posted by: Diane | May 2, 2010, 12:58 pm 12:58 pm

Thank you for putting on Bill Mahr. He gives insight to the unspeakable.
Please also find someone on the show who cares about our environment. If others are just watching to see what they believe and not explore other views..then they are just missing the point. The door is open for really seeing what others think besides the upper 2% rigid intellects that just say what we have seen on every channel.

Posted by: Casey | May 2, 2010, 1:04 pm 1:04 pm

I was coming to complain about the idiots like Mahr, and that Communist shrill shill Katrina, but it appears that virtually everyone with a brain has beaten me to it. What we are given every week is Will, the only one who comes armed with intelligence and those pesky little things called facts, and on the other side Bill Mahr, who thinks Brazil with some of the largest off shore oil reserves in world runs on sugar cane, and that all racists are Republicans. Apparently, he never attended Rev. Wright’s, or most other Black churches in the United States, or he would know what Black racism looks like. ABC will soon go the way of CNN: no viewers and therefore, completely irrelevant.

Reading through these comments I was not surprised to see how many of your viewers only want to hear what they believe already. It’s a real problem in this country. I welcome the wider range of opinion offered by guests like Bill Maher and Katrina Vanden Heuval. The idea that Cokie Roberts represented Liberal opinion was always laughable. It’s great to see George Will finally challenged on your show after so many years of unchallenged, sanctimonious pontification. And by the way, Maher was correct when he noted that since the 70′s, Brazil has moved away from an oil-based economy to an ethanol-based economy, as any cursory checking of the facts will show. I haven’t tuned in to your show in years, but will begin to keep an eye on your guest line-ups. Today’s show was very encouraging, and I’m pleased to see This Week finally deciding to make an attempt to actually represent Liberal opinion as well as opinion from the center and far right. Perhaps it will help some of the viewers who’ve posted comments above become less ignorant of the wide range of opinion in this wonderful country of ours.

Posted by: Tim Johnson | May 2, 2010, 1:21 pm 1:21 pm

“Brazil is the second leading oil producer in South America, producing 5 times more oil than biofuel.”
This is sophistry. Being an oil producer is the opposite of being dependent on oil. Brazil PRODUCES oil, but have more than any other large country reduced consumer and national DEPENDENCE on it — due to the sugarcane ethanol program as Maher tried to explain to you. It’s the consumption that is relevant to the discussion of energy policy in the US. It’s our consumer dependence that drives our political willingness to give oil companies access to our environment (see: Palin, Sarah and Gingrich, Newt). We would not have risky drilling if the only argument made by the industry was profit. They have those permits because politicians convinced people that this would help our domestic supply and reduce mideast dependency (of course, neither the industry or the politicians actually believe(d) this). Bottom line: Maher is spot on; Will was trying to change the subject because his position is no longer tenable.

Posted by: molasky | May 2, 2010, 1:31 pm 1:31 pm

Maher was essentially correct except that many of the Blue-dog Democrats also have racist tendencies. Maher is not one to be politically correct which is why it was refreshing to see him on the show today. The critics of Maher seem to ignore the fact that most of the support for conservative causes comes from states south of the Mason-Dixon line. They are the ones running these stupid themes of honoring the Confederacy and ignoring slavery, targeting Mexican-American’s and belonging to a political party that is over 90% white. Walk into any country club in the U.S. and you will still here the racist jokes that were popular half a century ago. We are far from a post-racial society.

This Week has hit rock bottom.
With the exception of George Will, the guest are for the most part a big joke. Having people like Rev. Al, Anita Dunn (a couple of weeks ago) idiot Maher and who ever the loud mouth no solution Katrina on there is a complete joke. The list can go on. I’m going to have to quit watching this week because it simply serves no purpose other than to make my blood boil. Tapper doesn’t nothing to moderate the debates, nor ask the tough question or follows up when the spin starts during the interviews
George, you are a brilliant man. I’ve read your book One Man’s America and it is great. When you have a line up like you had today, it is best not to waist your time. I applauded your effort on the show and in the green room; I could see the pain you were enduring.

So we can’t ask for ID now without it being racists, even though asking for ID that proves you are legal in the country is a federal law, and is also done by every other soveriegn country with borders in the world regardless of race. The rest of the world is using common sense.
What is next, no racial profiling of a bank robbery or murder suspect?

36 years as Senior Pastor x 52 Sundays = 1872 sermons. And you have listened to or read what % ?
Apparently President Obama came to the same ignorant conclusion about Black racism as he had very strong words for Mr. Wright – once he actually listened to him.

Posted by: For The Record | May 2, 2010, 10:15 pm 10:15 pm

I DVR all of the Sunday pundits and see what each of the major broadcast networks is saying each week. However, This Week has dropped to such a low mark with its choice of panel guests (with the exception of George Wills). Bill Maher is nothing but a joke and Katrina Vanden Heuval writes for magazine (The Nation) that no one reads – and her comments certainly represent that fact. The Rev Sharpton has HIS point of view but it certainly doesn’t represent America’s view.
I’m dropping This Week from weekly record schedule. It just doesn’t matter anymore.

Today, Obama called Wright’s statements “divisive,” “racially charged” and “views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation.” Jake Tapper, March 18, 2008
You still haven’t told what % of his sermons you have heard or read the complete sermon that led to your favorable conclusion (or is it just that you don’t hear the hate because you hate America too).
I watched his 2007 Christmas Sermon on YouTube. The last couple of minutes were very enlightening. Very much in tune with the spirit of the arrival of the Savior. I listed to all four parts so I’m pretty sure I got the message.

Posted by: For The Record | May 3, 2010, 1:20 am 1:20 am

If this isn’t Barack Obama saying the Reverand Wright is a black racist, then you are just being disengenuous about how Obama feels.
March 18, 2008
But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial.  They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice.  Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.
As such, Reverend Wright’s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems – two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

So then you believe that President Obama was wrong in his assessment of Rev Wright. He really is a good Christian pastor who preaches the Word of God. You believe that Obama should have stood by his side, defended him, and blasted his critics for taking Wright out of context and smearing his name. And Obama should have remained a member of his church.

Jake, David Brinkley must have turned over in his grave. How you let those complete idiots get away with their incredibly ill informed, and insolent remarks is beyond me. Biased and emotional contributors do not and should not be included in the Roundtable, the most valuable part of your show. I wouldn’t be surprised if George left the show but he probably has a contract. I could not believe that you let three of them scream at him with little chance to defend himself and rebut their comments. So George responds, and a guest follows with their piece and you move on – they were yelling at George before he spoke a single word in the Roundtable. How dare you lose control of that forum. You should be embarrassed.
