The New Jersey Democrat told me this morning on ‘GMA’ that he is in favor of halting any new off-shore drilling projects.

“Before we commit any more deep drilling permits we gotta make sure we have the worst case scenario possibilities to make sure there’s a response to it.  And we gotta rethink about off shore drilling off those coasts that are already not subject to drilling.”

Menendez also believes the time for oil companies to self-regulate should be over.  “It just seems to me you can’t be and advocate for the industry and at the same time make sure that safety and all the regulations are lived up to.”

He also expressed confidence that his bill to increase BP’s financial liability from $75 million to $10 billion will make it through Congress.
