THIS WEEK This Week – 5/2/2010

On THIS WEEK this week we started the show with some quick questions for Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano about the car bomb in Times Square:

Then we had an exclusive interview with Lamar McKay, president and chairman of BP America, about the oil disaster in the Gulf:

Then back to Napolitano, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, and Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen for a view of the government response to the oil slick — as well as Arizona’s immigration reform law and more:

Our feisty roundtable included George Will, the Rev. Al Sharpton, HBO’s Bill Maher, Matthew Dowd and Katrina vanden Heuvel. We first talked about the oil slick:

Then we chatted about immigration reform:

;

They took their conversation about Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to the green room:

Then there was In Memoriam:

Thanks for watching!!

This Week has hit rock bottom.
With the exception of George Will, the guest are for the most part a big joke. Having people like Rev. Al, Anita Dunn (a couple of weeks ago) idiot Maher and who ever the loud mouth no solution Katrina on there is a complete joke. The list can go on. I’m going to have to quit watching this week because it simply serves no purpose other than to make my blood boil. Tapper doesn’t nothing to moderate the debates, nor ask the tough question or follows up when the spin starts during the interviews
George, you are a brilliant man. I’ve read your book One Man’s America and it is great. When you have a line up like you had today, it is best not to waist your time. I applauded your effort on the show and in the green room; I could see the pain you were enduring.

So we can’t ask for ID now without it being racists, even though asking for ID that proves you are legal in the country is a federal law, and is also done by every other soveriegn country with borders in the world regardless of race. The rest of the world is using common sense.
What is next, no racial profiling of a bank robbery or murder suspect?

Matthew did nail it for the reasons why the public does not trust the government at 8:23.
Too bad it fell on deaf ears; as it always does.

I was completely offended by Mr. Maher’s remarks. You don’t think racist democrats exist in the world? Al Sharpton is a sham and Bill Maher was kicked off your network once before for offensive comments. Is this the best you can come up with for your roundtable? I’ll never tune in again. Good riddance ABC news.

Did “This Week” suddenly become a MSNBC show? Al Sharpton, Bill Mahar and Katrina Vandenhooval on the same panel??? You can’t be serious! As a consumer of serious news, I’ve always considered “This Week” a place for serious discussion and education. When you invite folks like Mahar, you get comments like “all Republicans are racists …” To make things worse, he (Mahar) give false information about Brazil and oil. I had to check my TV to make sure I wasn’t watching MSNBC. “This Week,” please don’t go down this road of joke news. I really thought this show was better than that. I realize ABC is a left-leaning network, but I’m hoping this isn’t a sign of things to come.

When I saw that Maher and Sharpton were on the program, that was the end for me; I turned off the TV. There is only so much crazy liberalism one can take. I guess, This Week sees MSNBC as something to emulate.
Cynthia Tucker and Ariana Huffington should not have a platform to spew their one-sided liberalism.
Was there ever such a thing as true journalism, where they report the facts?

Posted by: TheVoyce | May 2, 2010, 6:35 pm 6:35 pm

Rev. Al and Bill Maher made a mockery out of a usually very informative news program. Rev. Al? Come on. Bill Maher? News? Only on HBO.
I will keep my fingers crossed for next week….

Kudos for ABC corporate-run media to have the courage to bring in some strong liberal (progressive) representation such as Maher. Vandenhouvel, etc.to counter the bizarre conservative thought processes of George Will. He stated that death & environmental disaster are just part & parcel of extracting our fossil fuels. Or as he termed it: “the risks.” I’d like to make a date with him to visit the families of dead mine and oil workers to explain his position. Would be fun.

Norway has one of, if not the largest, off shore oil reserves in the world. The safety standards that U.S. off-shore companies operate at would be considered CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT by Norwegian standards. BP bought off the regulators and busted the unions. Oh yes, and so did Massey Coal. God bless the conservatives and God bless Amerika.

Posted by: Opus88 | May 2, 2010, 8:28 pm 8:28 pm

bill maher said Brazil is off of oil, yet it consumes far more oil than ethanol. More outrages was his comment that if your a racist in America, your in the Republican party, I think what he was really saying is that if your a racist in America your white, there are no black or hispanic racists in the Democratic party.
I can see having Bill on for comic value, but he wasn’t even funny. What are his credentials?

Posted by: David jackman | May 2, 2010, 8:58 pm 8:58 pm

I thought that the panel of liberals on This Week today were embarrassing and made liberalism look like some sort of kooky religion. And I did not think that George Will was saying that deaths were a cost of doing business. I thought he was saying that deaths are a consequence of all forms of energy extraction and why is that only an oil spill is spoken of as an evil that ought to make us subject a process to a cost-benefit analysis. If ABC keeps up panels like this, I’ll give up on this show.

Today was our last day of watching ThisWeek….you reached the lowest low with your ‘guests’ Katrina, Al and Bill’….We are looking for balanced, stimulating …thought provoking discussion, which you no longer offer. Shame on you!!!

Posted by: tsando | May 2, 2010, 9:44 pm 9:44 pm

If George Will had any intellectual dignity he would resign his very long-time position on this program. If desired this type of garbage I would watch MSNBC. Count me out of here!

Posted by: 1th521 | May 2, 2010, 11:15 pm 11:15 pm

I find it funny how so many people are complaining just because This Week had Al Sharpton, who I admit is crazy, as one of their guests and delivered a brilliant smack down to George Will. Apparently all you “conservatives” want is Fox “News” on every channel all the time.

Posted by: Brandon | May 3, 2010, 12:21 am 12:21 am

Is it just me or does Napolitano seem to have odd mannerisms and awkward speech patterns?

Posted by: tierra | May 3, 2010, 2:13 am 2:13 am

George Will justifiably appeared to be in physical pain to be forced to debate with such uninformed dimwits.
Offering Maher a guest seat on a show that purports to be a genuine discussion of the issues is a travesty. Sharpton’s nothing but a ranting petty demagogue. Vanderhoven is so one dimensional she gives me a headache.
George, please jump ship so I can follow you to a different show on Sundays.

I don’t understand how it would be fun to watch those families be told the cold hard truth, especially after such a devastating loss.

For the love of God please tell us that Maher was on the show so George could make clear what an idiot Maher is! Please don’t let anyone think Maher was on the show because ABC seriously considers Maher a legitimate commentator.

I don’t agree with the Reverend Al Sharpton, why was he a part of the roundtable? Does he understand the separation of Church & State and does the new host understand this as well? Why do we continue to allow a platform for him to speak about the politics in America? I prefer a round table of unbiased Americans involved in Politics. I have heard enough about the poor rights of these criminals, and they are criminals, I want to worry about those who come here legally, they paid, they waited until they were invited. BTW does anybody care about our laws? If illegals come here and don’t care if they are here illegally what happens when they come across another law they don’t like? Just ignore it too? The border to Mexico should be closed until there is an actual evaluation of how many illegals are actually in the US, and then we can decide what to do with them. Of course we won’t know this because they sure a heck don’t fill out the Census form.

Matthew Dowd can’t have it both ways. Conservatives (like him) complain of too much government (and under fund it at every opportunity) until there is a disaster and then complain because government didn’t do more.

“until there is a disaster and then complain because government didn’t do more.” – Wayne Neumann
Let me help you understand Wayne.
The complaint is because the existing government agencies didn’t do their jobs and are ineffective. If we already have an agency to deal with Coal Mines, the Oil Industry and Wall Street then we all would like to see them do what they are being paid to do.
Since the government agencies are soooo bad at doing their jobs logical people, like Dowd don’t want to see any more new ones.

Funny how the vintage licensed network media like to complain about the far right message of talk radio and Fox news cable shows, and the attempt to portray a Sunday News program with Al Sharpton, Bill Maher, & aptly named “Katrina”, as anything but a cartoon. Who knew, I guess Code Pink was busy, huh?

Posted by: Foghorn Leghorn | May 3, 2010, 11:53 am 11:53 am

“then we all would like to see them do what they are being paid to do”
As Wayne already alluded to government agencies are much more likely to actually do their jobs when controlled by Democrats instead of sitting on their hands or looking the other way when run by Republicans. Should anybody be surprised when people who don’t like government claim government doesn’t work?

As an Arizona resident, former New Yorker, I am very disappointed that Jake Tapper allowed that BS to go on for over 20 minutes before he somewhat very poorly stated what this AZ Immigration Law really is – {jerry springer comes to mind}
Had Jake done his reasearch – he would have had a copy of the New Law & had known it Mirrors the Federal Law. George Steph. certainly would have addressed that from the beginning. However, Even More Appalling – having Bill Maher on? Do You Really Consider Him Knoweldgeable & Well Versed. Jake, Really, as I said, I am a resident of Arizona, the Nerve of You to Ask Maher, What he Would say to the People of Arizona? Are you Serious? Do you really think we are out here on the edge of our seats waiting for direction from Bill Maher????? & Sharpton can stay in NY we don’t need him & do whatever with the high & mighty Katrina – I do wonder if George Will & Matthew Dodd will ever be back on this show since they are Intelligent, Knowledge Gentlemen.

“Should anybody be surprised when people who don’t like government claim government doesn’t work?” – Skip
Ah, no.
Why would anyone be surprised with the truth?
Government continues to show how inept it is regardless of who is in the Whitehouse or Congress.
What is surprising is that there are people who still like government even after it proves itself time and time again to be incompetent.

Perhaps it’s only a matter of taste then. I believe government is no more incompetent than corporations are ruthless in exploiting people for monetary gain…their only real motivation.

Wow, Mr. Ahmadinejad sure underscored the regime’s ineptness at foreign policy this morning in his speech to the UN.
All previous administrations Democrat and Republican, have chosen to keep our nuclear war policy ambiguous. Mr. Obama, considering himself smarter, chose to speak on the subject, and in doing so threatened to use them on Iran. What did he hope to accomplish?
Iran is now spanking him like a naughty school boy.

I don’t know if it’s typical but I bet a lot of people did vote for Bush to keep the level of Incompetence lower. That didn’t work out too well but the damage could easily been worse with the right Democrat in charge.
Regarding the race of incompetence between government and corporations, the government is laps ahead. I don’t think the motivation is a major factor, it’s just hard to find competent people to do any job. Just look at how hard it is for us to get a competent president. We are in a decades old drought with no relief in sight.

The motivation of government should be to protect our citizens. In order for that to work we have to elect people who sincerely are capable of and want to do that….which means not electing people who don’t want government to work because they believe it categorically impinges on their checkbooks. What more convenient evidence is there that government doesn’t work than pointing out the failures of government after re-electing the worst President in at least 100 years. Sure…you can’t have a safer bet than that!

In addition, by reserving the right to attack Iran with nuclear weapons, he gave Iran the perfect excuse to continue with nuclear arms development. After all, under threat from the “Great Satan”, who could argue with their right to self-defense.

No, all previous administrations have seen the wisdom in not commenting publicly on our nuclear use policy….
Truman – Democrat: No comment just used them.
Eisenhower – Republican: No Comment
Kennedy – Democrat: No Comment
Johnson – Democrat: No Comment
Nixon – Republican: No Comment
Ford – Republican: No Comment
Carter – Democrat: No Comment
Reagan – Republican: No Comment
Bush – Republican: No Comment
Clinton – Democrat: No Comment
Bush – Republican: No Comment
Obama – Democrat: (So much smarter than all who went before) We will not use nuclear weapons, even if you attack us with other weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological.
I think Ms. Palin had it right – he is like a playground bully saying “C’mon, C’mon, hit me, just hit me…”

Arizona’s new immigration law is simply just reinforcing earlier attempts to try and reform our laws on immigration for the better, but it seems that the current federal government and current federal laws are slacking in efficiency in states where immigration is becoming an increasingly huge and controversial problem. Earlier reforms, such as the one proposed bye Reagan in 1986, tried to target controlling our borders, giving legal rights to illegal aliens, and also tried to cut down on employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. Now what that is doing is leaving it up to employers to give up their very needed profits that they save and make to now pay and hire new workers except now instead of only paying below minimum wage and giving no benefits, the employer must now pay for health insurance and file taxes, and also have to pay for other things they didn’t need to worry about with the illegals. Wal mart is one of these big companies, which had a 4 year criminal investigation and ended with wal mart paying 11 million dollars and there was 245 arrests of undocumented workers. The reform bye Reagan required employers to get proof of citizenship before hiring them but clearly employers aren’t trustworthy to do so, considering that even major companies let illegal immigrants in to their stores to do work with out asking for legal documents.According to the Washington Post Illegal immigrants are more likely than American citizens to hold jobs but less likely to have high school diplomas. They tend to be younger, and many have children who were born in the U.S., making the kids citizens which now lets them collect welfare checks. State welfare officials estimate that cutting off payments to illegal immigrants for their US-born children could save about $640 million annually. This Wal mart happened to be in Pennsylvania and really shows that that the problem of illegal immigrants stealing jobs is even hitting the small towns and rural areas not just urban areas where unemployment is a growing problem.
If we can’t trust employers to ask for documents then who can we trust to do it? People who oppose the Arizona bill are saying we shouldn’t give this right to the cops because when they ask for the documents it will be racial profiling. But what about when employers ask for documents? Are they only going to question the dark skinned workers? That’s a potentially great chance for racial profiling but the bill was passed and now we should at least give this right to the officials who have training and definetly better judgement and that is just one goal of this Arizona bill.
In 1994 the gov. of California made a ballot that was to put a ban on illegal immigrants from most public services, including education. The voters approved but was thrown out bye the courts. State analysts estimate there are 300,000 illegal students out of 6.3 million public school students. There’s an annual cost of $7,626 per student that’s nearly 2.3 billion dollars to school kids that have not earned the right to be in the country. The estimated state tab for health care given to illegal immigrants for 2009-2010 is also estimated to be $703 million for as many 780,000 illegal immigrants. According to the Washington Post Illegal immigrants are more likely than American citizens to hold jobs but less likely to have high school diplomas. They tend to be younger, and many have children who were born in the U.S., making the kids citizens which now lets them collect welfare checks. State welfare officials estimate that cutting off payments to illegal immigrants for their US-born children could save about $640 million annually. It is said on CNN that there is a 64 billion dollar deficit in California. The people that live in these areas where illegal aliens are a problem are the ones that understand that the federal government is not doing good enough and when they try to fix the plan is shot down and left with no alternative choice and an increasing problem. Arizona is the first of many states that needs to take steps towards a better way of handling immigration since the feds. Clearly are not.

tierra, the “well you don’t like my guy Bush was worse” talking point is very old and tired and doesn’t have any impact anymore. Please go to your bosses and ask them politely if you could have a different fresher more effective strategy and talking points to post.
Thank you in advance.

Sorry, the sad record of the Republicans is very effective in pointing out that the criticism of Obama is lame on a comparative basis.

Wow!
You are so off base and out there I’m speechless.
I don’t know how anyone gets to where you are.
Should we blame it on the Public School System or was it your home life?

Finally George Will made Countdown’s “Worst Person in the World” for his latest Neocon nonsense. He should have received it when he blamed the financial meltdown on “300 million Americans living beyond their means.” Right, George, always blame the middle class and poor; never your corporate-crook buddies in the top 2%. Remember? The ones Bush gave a $1.4 TRILLION unfunded tax cut to. I’m sorry. I misstated. There IS NO American middle class.
