Vice President Biden’s son, Beau, Undergoing Treatment at Delaware Hospital

ABC News' Karen Travers and Jake Tapper report:

Vice President Biden's son Beau is undergoing treatment at a Delaware hospital, according to a statement from the vice president’s office.

A source close to the family tells ABC News that Beau had some discomfort this morning and a headache so he went to the doctors to get checked out. He's at Christiana Hospital and doctors are examining him trying to determine what, if anything, may be wrong.

The statement from the Vice President’s office said Beau is "alert and awake, and communicating with his parents and his wife, who are with him,” but it did not indicate the specific reason for the treatment.

Beau Biden is 41 years old.  His father was age 45 when he underwent two brain surgeries on life-threatening aneurysms

Beau was scheduled to speak tonight on the topic “My Life in Public Service” during a presentation at the University of Delaware, but the university groups sponsoring the event have been informed that he has cancelled.

Beau is currently Delaware’s attorney general. He served a year in Iraq as a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard's 261st Signal Brigade.

The vice president’s eldest son considered running for his father's Senate seat in Delaware this November but decided to focus on his job as Attorney General and his family, after his year in Iraq.

“My first responsibilities are here in Delaware,” he wrote in a letter to supporters in January after he made his decision. “I have a duty to fulfill as Attorney General – and the immediate need to focus on a case of great consequence. And that is what I must do. Therefore I cannot and will not run for the United States Senate in 2010. I will run for reelection as Attorney General.”

Vice President Biden did a round of television interviews from Wilmington this morning. He was at the White House on Monday morning for meetings with senior advisors and was scheduled to travel to his home state later in the day.

My thoughts and prayers to a fine man and a wonderful family. Hopefully the doctors will find nothing more than a couple of Joe’s bad jokes stuck in the recesses of Beau’s mind. Only kidding, get well Beau.

I agree, don’t need to be a dem to wish Beau and his family our prayers and support.
This could be an aneurism or a stroke. Could be stem cell bleeding as well.
Whatever the cause, it appears to be serious and medical care is exactly what he needs to diagnose and help him mend.

Hang in there Beau and the entire Biden family. They are good people. Beau was in Iraq….by the way how many other children of people in Congress fought in Iraq or Aftganistan? I’m sure he could have gotten out of it, but he didnt’. God Bless him.

McCain’s for one. And since neither John McCain nor Joe Biden have chosen to make that a major campaign point (although they do mention it when directly relevant, just like mentioning Mrs Biden works as a teacher), we should respect that.

South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson’s son Alan also served in Iraq — as an officer in the South Carolina National Guard. Alan is now running for Attorney General of South Carolina. Both sons are honorable men. I wish Beau a speedy recovery.

I certainly wish the attorney general of Delaware the speediest of evaluations and recoveries. There’s a very strong genetic link to brain aneurysms, and since his father had two, I’m glad Beau is getting evaluated just in case his symptoms indicate he does, too. I wish people who have this disease in their families could all get screening MRAs, but I suspect that’s unrealistic.

They say now he had a stroke. I do wish him well

Headaches are often the first symptom of a stroke. It’s usually headache which is unlike others you might have had. Then you may get numbness or weakness in the face or arm or leg, usually just on one side of the body. The left will be fine but the right is weak and so on. The faster someone gets treatment the better they do. In the case of strokes, time lost is brain function lost. My prayers to Beau and his family for a quick and complete recovery.
