The former FBI agent who brought down Robert Hanssen told me this morning that finding 10 operating “illegals” in the United States is “probably one of the most severe spy cases in American history.”

“Just the tenor of the surveillance and the amount of work and effort that was put into catching them shows you how important it was to bring down this spy ring,” Eric O’Neill said on “GMA.”

The news of the arrests broke just days after President Obama and Russian President Medvedev shared a lunch of cheeseburgers and fries. And the Russians called the accusation “baseless and improper.”

“GMA” lead the broadcast with this latest news. Our competitors chose to start with the storm moving through the Gulf.

Here’s my take on our decision. Weigh in below and let me know if you agree.
