GOP Candidate Tarkanian: Sharron Angle has ‘Limited Base’; Loss to Reid Would be ‘Devastating’
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: In the race to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sharron Angle has some late momentum going into Tuesday’s GOP primary – despite polls showing her to be the weakest of the three main Republican candidates. Today on ABC/Washington Post “Top Line,” Danny Tarkanian – one of Angle’s rivals for the Republican nomination – said he fears that Angle won’t stand as strong of a chance as he or the third candidate, Sue Lowden, would against Reid. “Harry Reid's going to have a hard time winning any election in November. However, Sharron has a very strong and passionate base, but it's a much more limited base than either I or Sue would have,” said Tarkanian, R-Nev. “The problem with Sue's campaign in arguing that she's the most viable candidate against Reid is that we have seen how her campaign has handled the different attacks and scrutiny Reid's campaign has put forth against her these last two months. And her campaign has shown they're not prepared to run against Reid. I believe that I have the best chance to beat Reid in the general election…. I am the strongest candidate in that regard, and I believe I can stand up to Harry Reid and take the attacks he's going to throw at me.” Of the prospect of Republicans failing to defat Reid, Tarkanian said: “It would be devastating. It would be absolutely devastating. But I really mean this — you know, our internal polls show that myself and Sharron Angle are in a dead heat, and Sue Lowden has dropped quite a bit a-ways. It's going to come down to the two of us. … I'm going to get the last bit of undecideds to vote my way, and I'm going to win this primary. And then I win this primary I fully believe that I'm going to beat Reid in the general election.” Tarkanian, the son of legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, also disputed the notion that Angle is the “tea party candidate” in the race. “That's not necessarily the case,” he said. “She has the Tea Party Express, which is a California-based consulting group, that has come out and endorsed her and run a lot of TV time and radio time — upwards of a million dollars on them. However, the Tea Party of Nevada, the national tea party organization — they have come out and repudiated that endorsement and they have stayed neutral in the race. There's a lot of tea party people, supporters on my campaign, that are out there supporting me and getting other people to get behind my campaign and vote for me.” But Tarkanian distanced himself from controversial statements made by another tea party favorite, Senate candidate Rand Paul, R-Ky. “I certainly would not have agreed with the statement that the Civil Rights Act should not apply to private businesses. In fact, I was asked that question by Politico and I said absolutely, it should apply to it. Now Sue Lowden was on one of the debates with Jon Ralston and he asked her that comment and she wouldn't answer it. It's a simple answer: of course. We had racial discrimination in the private businesses, and all people in America should be treated equal.” Watch the interview with Danny Tarkanian HERE. For those considering Angle please read:
According to Carl Cameron (Fox News) Tarkanian has moved into 2nd.
On an April 5-7 poll Angle was getting 5% of the vote. 6 weeks later she is pushing 30%. What has changed? Endorsements and money. I don’t believe the endorsements would have catapulted her forward on their own. Two endorsements, Tea Party Express (Sacramento) and Club for Growth (Washington) have put Angle in the position of spending like Lowden. Estimates are Angle (with help from the TPX/ CFG) will outspend Lowden $852,000 to $255,000 on ads/mailers over the last two weeks. Look at what Angle had to say to KOLO on May7 regarding Lowden:
“ There’s a little evidence someone is trying to buy a senate seat rather than earn it.”
Now we know who that person is. Sharon was barely on the radar screen before these groups from outside of Nevada dumped $1,000,000+ into her campaign. Had they not done that Angle would still be barely on the radar. The TPX/CFG money cannot go through Angle’s campaign but is that money any more private than the money Lowden has that Angle claimed was buying the race?
This election is being bought by the Tea Party Express and Club for Growth for Sharron Angle. Tarkanian is a viable candidate doing it the right way – by earning it. If you don’t believe me believe the Tea Party Nation and the Tea Party Patriots who have called the Express on the carpet for getting involved by endorsing candidates. People need to realize the Tea Party Express was created and is run by the Political Consulting firm of Russo, Marsh and Rogers in Sacramento. This is all about them making money. Additionally, the Club for Growth has spent $335,000 on ads and mailers attacking conservatives.
Do we as Nevadan’s want California and Washington controlling our elections? Vote Tarkanain.

Anyone should be able to beat Reid. He pushed bills that were totally against the wishes of the people.

@Justin,
Your boss has done more to defy the will of the American people as Senate leader than any in history.
After wishing for our defeat in Iraq, I hope you join the ranks of the unemployed along with your boss.

I love how all these out-of-stater are telling us what we should do. As a NV native, he has done A LOT for this state. I think many folks need a history lesson.

Reid’s counterfeit PACs have been attacking Sue Lowden for over a month. They are still attacking her and will continue through election day.
It is obvious that Reid does not want to run against Sue Lowden.

I agree with Rick McDaniel, a trained monkey should be able to beat Harry Reid after all the crap he has been spreading in Washington.
On second thought I take that back ,an untrained monkey would be better than Reid!

Sharron Angle is the most electable candidate despite what Tarkanian and Lowden and the Democrats say. She has won 4 elections to the Nevada State Assembly. Tarkanian won primary election but could not win the general. Sue Lowden was elected once to the state Senate but could not get re-elected. The reason for her surge in the polls is not the money but the 40+ endorsements from conservative organizations. Both Lowden and Tarkanian have put their own money into the race–so who’s trying to buy the elction? Sharron Angle can bring together the Republican, the Independents and the Conservative Democrats and beat Reid in November.
