Is Obama “Setting Gen. Petraeus up for Failure?”
ABC's Z. Byron Wolf reports: Republicans on the Hill are all boosters of Gen. Petraeus. But many of them question President Obama’s plan to begin withdrawing combat troops from Afghanistan starting in July of next year. That disconnect was on display at a Capitol Hill press conference when Sen. Kit Bond, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, praised Petraeus but said not even Petraeus can win in Afghanistan if there is a timetable for withdrawal. Later, Bond said that by installing Petraeus without changing his timetable to begin withdrawal to be based on conditions instead of the calendar, the President is “setting Petraeus up for failure.”

Is Congress Sounding Dumber?
Lamentably, when it comes to military matters, the president has his head where the sun doesn’t shine.
The president to save historical face probably had to do this very noxious deed, but in my estimation it’s a lose-lose situation. It’s a sad day for the U.S. military, General McChrystal personally in terms of what is left of his military career, and especially a totally unnecessary blow to overall American foreign policy.
Ps. Personally, I can’t wait until president Obama is relieved of his “commander-in-chief” role by the American people in 2012 for what he’s done or undone while he’s been in office during the past 18 months!

SENATOR Obama called General Petraeus a failure during a congressional hearing. Now he chooses him to replace McChrystal. We have a President who is inexperienced and naive. I didn’t vote for this bozo and in 2012 many of those who did will surely not do so again.

Oh, I thought he was “General Betray Us”. Oh, how quickly they forget!

I have no illusions that posts here matter much. But the narrative that July 2011 is a hard and fast pull-out date are false. The administration and military have made it clear that a review will be conducted in December and, if conditions on the ground permit, a pull-out would BEGIN in July.
Of course, that kind of intelligent nuance doesn’t fit with neo-con political goals.
